WHO: Auron and Rikku
WHAT: Reunion? Kind of?
WHEN: This evening.
WHERE: Auron's Apartment, NYC
WARNINGS: He just got out of the shower, so naked guardian?

Auron really had to keep reminding himself that he was no longer dead.

Knowing that it was only a matter of time before there was an attack (he was half expecting Seymour or Yunalesca to show up any second), Auron had tried to remain vigilant. It had been nothing in Spira; he didn't require sleep.

But that was not the case here. If he was strictly honest with himself, he didn't want to sleep. Sleeping might lead to dreaming, and Auron had to live in the now. Rikku was gone, and he needed to accept that.

Taking a shower with some vague intent on waking him up a bit, he found it had the opposite effect. Sitting on his sofa in his bathrobe, Auron was only slightly aware of his eyes closing.

Perhaps a nap wouldn't hurt.

Wind blew through the living room, upsetting papers and rattling the frames on the walls. There was a high pitched scream as a girl was dropped onto the floor by a tornado-like vortex.

"I don't want to die!" Rikku cried, grabbing whatever was closest to her. She was trying to overcome her phobia, she really was! But that was a really awful storm! "I'm so scared, I'm so scared!" She squeezed her eyes shut, panting heavily.

It was quiet, though. And there was a lot of light. Rikku slowly opened one eye, taking in her surroundings. "...Auron?"

And Auron was instantly awake, reaching for a sword that wasn't there, aware that Rikku was in trouble and he had to defend her.

... which might have been more effective, if he hadn't been in a bathrobe without a sword. Fumbling to close it, his sleep addled brain tried to parse what was going on.

"Rikku?" His voice was harsh with sleep, but he couldn't stop the wild hope. She was already back?

"Auron!" She bounced up, flinging herself at him in a spastic hug. He would probably hate that. He'd never been one for touching or feeling or.. talking. But she hadn't seen Auron in ages! She didn't care if it was a dream, or if she was dead or anything, she was hugging her friend, dammit!

"I wasn't scared," she said, still hugging him. Hugging, not clinging, really. Not scared by the vortex at all.

"Um!" Rikku blushed brightly. "You're kind of not wearing clothes!"

His arms went around her almost automatically, and Auron wasn't surprised to realize he was shaking. She was back. It had only been a couple days.

... but something was wrong. Like a note sung flat.

"The vortex?" He pulled back enough to look at her, belatedly belting his robe again and frowning. "It returned you?"

They were like two shaking leaves. Her from the crazy storm, him from.. maybe the cold of being naked? Which they were apparently just going to ignore. Okay, then!

"The whos-it did-a whats-it?" Rikku tilted her head, looking at him. "You're the one that's back!" She smiled brightly. She hoped it wasn't terribly selfish of her to be so glad he was back. Maybe he'd been happy on the Farplane. She should want whatever was best for him.

Of course.

Auron pulled away, his expression as unreadable as ever. She was Rikku, but she had not been here before. She was glad to see him because for her, he had been on the Farplane.

Explaining Braska would be interesting.

Carefully, after making certain his robe would remain shut, Auron explained the world and the vortex. He explained Yuna, Tidus and Wakka were here as well, and then he paused.

"You were here once, for a time. I am told that happens here."

Rikku took the news well, cheerful about her friends being there. There were people she would miss, sure, but at least Yunie was here! And she suppose if Auron was here, Tidus could be too. And maybe more people would come, too, like she had!

"I was?" Rikku said, blinking in surprise. "I don't remember it. That's weird, you know?" She understood the basics of the world, and the vortex, and how people might remember things differently than others. That part made sense.

But it was weird to think about her having been here, hanging out with her friends but not remembering it. They had memories of her that she didn't.

Auron merely nodded. As tortures went, this was both unique and terrible. His compliments to the asshole.

"Check your pockets. For identification." He could hardly offer her his apartment at this point.

"I know who I am," she said, thinking the suggestion was a bit silly. Still, she reached into the pockets of her shorts, pulling out a card. "See? That's me." She showed him the card, not sure what he expected to get out of it. There was an address, but she didn't know where anything was in this world.

It almost seemed like something was wrong.. She wanted to ask if he was okay, but... it was hard to tell with Auron.

Auron couldn't help it. He laughed quietly, sitting down and rubbing a hand over his face.

"The identification is of the person you replaced."

Rikku looked at it and shrugged. "Looks like me to me." She didn't recognize the type of identification. "Is New York the name of this world? Or just a part of it?"

"There's a lot of machina in here," she commented, looking around.

"New York is a city. And this world has a great deal of machina. You... Will enjoy it, I think."

Auron suddenly realized something. How would he explain Braska? "Once you're settled."

"Really? Does everybody use it?" Rikku looked hopeful. Rikku usually wasn't bothered too much by what people thought of her, as long as she had her friends. Still, the idea that maybe the Al Bhed weren't hated here was sort of nice.

"They don't blame Sin on machina here?"

In spite of himself, Auron smiled, just slightly. "The monster Sin does not exist here. They do not call it machina; everything has a specific name such as car or airplane. But there are no restrictions to it."

He looked out the window as well, the people of New York scurrying around as they did so well. "As I said, it is a very different world."

Rikku smiled, following his gaze to the window. "Wow, I guess so!" She could understand the whole 'different world' thing in theory, but it was hard to believe how much different. Was there anything like home?

She couldn't start getting homesick already! She hadn't even been outside. And there were all of these new machina to play with! "Do you like it here?"

Auron was silent for a long while. Not that it was unusual.

"I do. Once I got used to it."

That wasn't strictly true. It had been so long since Auron was used to anything. But he did like it here, after a fashion.

Since his mother had disappeared, Braska had taken to showing up at his father's apartment fairly regularly. If asked, he'd say it was to keep him from becoming even more monosyllabic than usual, and also to take advantage of the spare room he had.

It definitely wasn't because he missed her too. No ma'am.

"Dad, I--" He stopped dead in his tracks. The... lack of pants was just disturbing and forced him to look away, but something definitely clicked before that. "...Mom?"

Rikku smiled warmly when Auron said he liked it. That was a relief. She wanted her friends to be happy.

She looked up when The New Person came in. She smiled brightly, about to greet him... Then he called her Mom.

"Ummmm... Huh?" Her voice was higher pitched than normal. "...me? I'm your mom?"

In the back of his mind, Auron thought he should have probably called Braska to warn him. But he really wasn't on his A game today.

"Hello, Braska." He was worried now about so much. Would she panic? Be angry?

Would she feel guilted into living with him, or worse, into loving him? But outwardly, his expression didn't change. Old habits die hard, and no one knew it better than he.

Braska took a moment to kick his brain back into gear. Right. So. This wasn't the Rikku who'd been here earlier, but she was still his mother, and hopefully that wouldn't lead to insanity and explosions and...

Maybe he should've stayed home.

"Well... not yet, maybe, but..." he rubbed at the back of his neck, hoping this wouldn't go wrong. "It's... good to see you."

Rikku blinked at Braska, not quite sure what that meant. Not yet? Maybe? She looked over at Auron. Braska? There weren't many people who would name their kid that, and Rikku was one of them. And Auron had said that she'd been there before. Apparently... this had happened.

Wait, did Braska call Auron 'Dad'? But that was crazy!

She turned back to Braska, still very confused, but smiling. "It's nice to meet you. Gosh, you're so big!" she exclaimed. How could he be her son; he looked as old as she was! Rikku liked the idea of kids, but she wanted little ones!

This was killing him.

"Children come from the future here. They arrive, as you did. Before their births." Auron did his best to keep his voice steady, but he knew he was failing.

"Braska is our child."

Well, this wasn't awkward at all! True, Rikku didn't seem to be taking the idea badly, but... things could turn quickly, especially in a place like this. And especially when the universe was in the middle of a spate of chaos.

"I'm from quite a bit in the future. Not even due to be born for... quite a while," there was no harm in saying that. As long as he didn't set a date, he couldn't accidentally write himself out of existing.

"Okay, I get the future kid thing, but you're still way too big! My kids are supposed to stay little kids forever, you know?" There was quite a bit of fondness in her voice, even if this was still CRAZY.

She stepped closer to Braska, still a little hesitant. "You have my eyes," she said, sounding a little excited. And Auron, oh man. "And your dad's chin and..." Rikku did her best impression of a stern face, which really was sort of comical.

"Smile!" she told her son.

The tiny spark of hope that never quite died down at seeing her flared again, but he did his best to ignore it. Auron swallowed, feeling fear and love and a billion other emotions that he just wasn't big enough to contain.

"You heard your mother." At least the sarcasm was still working.
