WHO: Bethany & Fenris
WHERE: The Coffee Bean
WHY: Because OPERATION DRAGON SWARM that's why.
WARNINGS: Unlikely in the extreme.

Bethany had started spending mornings relaxing at a coffee shop, watching people come and go. It had the same feeling of sitting in the marketplace, watching people come and go. And really, people could be so entertaining.

This new world had so many similarities to Thedas at times. The rich moving quickly from one 'place to be seen' as another, especially at this shop. It was astounding how few people even seemed to bother to drink their coffee. What cache was there in carrying around a cup for show?

Still, she liked this time. One never knew who they might see.

Fenris had taken his time getting accustomed to this world. Whilst his companions were here, the world was vastly different from what he was used to. However, it had taken away the majority of his markings, so he wasn't going to complain too much.

Fresh from a trip to see Hawke, he'd decided to stop in and grab a coffee, just for the simple reason that he felt like he needed some sort of reward for putting up with Hawke's complete failure at subtlety.

If he noticed Bethany, he wasn't about to acknowledge it. Coffee first, human interaction later.

Bethany Hawke had been a good girl who never swore, and always did her best to act like a lady in public. Which is why when Bethany Hawke almost choked on her coffee and wound up with half the store looking at her, she could have crawled under the table and died on the spot.

He would just walk in, wouldn't he?

He'd also not notice her. Turning her head away from the line, Bethany tried to not be disappointed. Really, she was being absurd.

Coffee was truly some sort of gift from the Maker, a sort of universal 'sorry for all the crap I pulled' gift. True, if you gave it to someone like Merrill there were sometimes issues with getting them down, but for normal people? All was well.

Turning from the counter with it, he could almost swear he'd been stalked here. He arched an eyebrow, it slowly clicking that this must've been Hawke's sister - the one his Hawke had taken great pleasure in drunkenly talking about whenever Carver had pissed her off enough, and the one who, handily enough, he'd been able to talk about Hawke and Varric being idiots with.

"Would you mind some company?" It wasn't often like him to approach people. This was a rare exception to the rule, and it'd likely never happen again.

Still trying to clear the bit that had gone down the wrong pipe, Bethany nodded enthusiastically. She hoped it wasn't the sort of ridiculous, overly enthusiastic that signalled OH PLEASE TAKE ME NOW but rather a hello, it's nice to see you again, please sit down sort of enthusiasm.

Maker, she needed help.

"It's nice to see you here." She put her hands around the mug, trying to calm down.

It was certainly a good thing that Fenris couldn't figure out just what went through her head. True, it'd been... strangely enthusiastic, but maybe that was just because she was in need of company.

Taking a seat and setting his mug down, the faintest smile tugged at his lips. "It seems I'm in luck to find such pleasant company."

Nggggh. That voice.

Bethany smiled. "I'd say ditto, but that'd just set us on an unending cycle of mutual admiration. I have to say though, I'm surprised to see you here. Did we all end up addicted to coffee?"

Not that there was anything wrong with a triple white chocolate mocha to start the morning.

Fenris could only shrug. "It's unlike anything we had in Thedas. Even the Orlesians would fall in love with it."

As Leliana's rambling post to the boards the other day had rather proved. He'd honestly never thought he'd see the day where a Chantry sister (and a Seeker to boot) acted like that.

Bethany couldn't help an unladylike snort. "I'm not sure there's much Orlesians won't fall in love with. We had to go to Val Royeaux to speak with the Divine, and the stories I could tell..."

She'd almost lit a man on fire for a rather unappreciated pursuit. She was no shy daisy anymore, but some men just didn't know when a girl wasn't interested.

Fenris chuckled softly. He'd never been to Orlais himself, but he'd heard enough tales of their somewhat interesting attitude towards love. They gave the Antivans a run for their money sometimes.

"Let me guess: Orlesians falling at your feet for a chance to romance one of the great Hawkes?" After all they'd done in Kirkwall, the Hawke name had become rather well-known. "I suppose they can't be blamed for trying."

"Often it was just trying to seduce a Warden. For some reason, that had panache." There had been one boy she had let 'romance one of the great Hawkes' not long after her Joining, but that had been equal parts rebellion and curiosity, not really anything more.

Still, it had been fun.

"At any rate, it was a far cry from Ferelden or Kirkwall." Bethany wasn't about to bring up Tevinter. She knew nothing of it, and to say it was a rather sensitive topic for Fenris would be an understatement beyond possible belief. "The food was good, though."

"I suppose what they say about Orlesians being the masters of... unusual desires is true," most people wouldn't ardently set their heart on bedding a Warden, certain infamous Antivans aside. True, Fenris himself had nothing against it, but a lot of people tended to lump Wardens in with the untouchable portions of society.

They did tend to make up for their strangeness with their food, though. Few places in all of Thedas boasted a finer cuisine than Orlais at her best. "The food is probably the only reason King Maric didn't chase them all the way back to Val Royeaux when he kicked them out of Ferelden."

Bethany laughed. "You have no idea how important food gets when you're a Warden. Stupid, really. I'm hungry all the time. You'd think they'd have come up with something by now..."

Smiling, Bethany extended a hand. "I know it seems strange, but we never officially met. I'm Bethany, which you know, but still. Seemed like the thing to do."

That really did explain why Anders had seemed to continually raid the pantry at Hawke's estate. Often without telling her. Fenris was fairly sure that wasn't just exclusive to his world.

That slight smile made a return, however slight it was, as he reached out and took her hand, pressing a kiss against it. Just because he'd been a slave didn't mean he couldn't be a gentleman. "Hawke never stops talking about you sometimes. I'm sure you live up to all her stories."

Oh. Oh my.

Bethany smiled, cursing herself for going absolutely weak in the knees at that. He was a smoothie.

"I really hope she only told you a few of them. Although, in her world, I suppose the best ones never happened." She took another sip of her mocha. "And even Marian didn't know the best of them after I left for the Wardens."

The ones Fenris had been told had been rather impressive. His Hawke had told him about the flight from Lothering, before... the incident with the ogre, about how Bethany had incinerated an entire wave of darkspawn with a single gesture.

If things got more impressive than that, he had to admit, he wanted to know more. "My Hawke tended to talk about you whenever your brother did something ridiculous... which was practically every time we took him out, to be honest."

Why they hadn't just taken him into the Deep Roads and left him there sometimes eluded Fenris, but he hadn't been about to bring that up with Leandra around. That woman scared him more than her daughter ever did.

Bethany smiled, shrugging out of her coat. The shop was overly warm, and she was pretty sure they'd be there for a bit.

Just fine with her, really.

"Oh, Carver. We do love him, but he's so easy to tease. He'd sometimes try to fight along with the local militia in Lothering, but he was way too young. It was the most ridiculous thing you'd ever seen; a child with a blade trying to fight back a spider infestation." She smiled at the memory. For her, he'd been the one to die to the ogre.

"And there was the time he was caught flirting with one of the Chantry sisters..."

Flirting with someone from the Chantry? That was asking for it. Sure, they seemed demure and harmless, but they hit harder than most other people. Apparently, faith in the Maker meant flirting was rewarded with frying pans to the face.

"I imagine none of that ended well," not that anything ever went well with Carver. The number of times he'd almost ruined the best laid plans... "He means well. He's just... terrible at half the things he does."

Bethany grinned over her mug, glad she wore a v-neck today. Maybe she should get some advice from Isabela...

"Well, he had to follow quite the sister act. I suppose it gave him a bit of a complex."

To his credit, Fenris was doing a fairly good job of not noticing certain... assets. Not that looking would be such a terrible thing, but she was Hawke's sister. It'd be practically asking to have his ass kicked.

"It'd certainly explain why he kept charging headlong into bandits. Hawke tried to kick him off a cliff once or twice for that."

"She actually did throw him off a bluff into a lake when we were kids, actually. He was cross with me, and threatened to tell the Templars on me. He was only seven and never would have, but Hawke wasn't pleased..."

Bethany immediately regretted saying anything. Mages and Templars were likely to be a tense topic.

As violent as his dislike of mages had once been, Fenris had never truly approved of the Templar's methods. Their usual reaction was to imprison mages away in towers, and... well, even he could see the myriad ways that could go wrong.

"He was young. And just as much an idiot then as now," perhaps it was a surprise for him not to agree with Carver's idea, but this world had changed his opinions on mages. Just a little. "If the Templars had come, I know Hawke would've just persuaded them to take him instead of you."

In spite of herself, Bethany chuckled. "From the sounds of it, he managed that anyway. I can't believe he joined them."

Part of it felt like a betrayal, if she was honest.

"At any rate, it's lovely having everyone here again." Everyone except Mother. Bethany really did hope to see her arrive any day. "Feels almost like a second chance."

"Maybe he thought wielding a two-handed sword means you have to hate mages in some form?" Admittedly, Carver had freed more than he'd detained, but that didn't change the principle of the thing.

Here, though, there weren't any problems with Templars or Circles or... well, anything. He'd rarely encountered anyone with a reason to hate mages, which was mildly astounding. "This world is... fairly amazing, I'll admit."

She almost teased him to ask what his excuse was, but she knew that story well enough. Bethany always knew there were plenty of mages, particularly in Tevinter and Kirkwall who would reenforce the fears and hatred so many felt.

Bethany never feared the Fade. She respected how quickly someone could fall though.

"Mmm, it is. I can't wait for this holiday." Her ears went pink. "The gift exchanges and parties will be wonderful. I sometimes think Thedas had forgotten how to smile."

"Thedas had Feastday alone when it came to joyous days. This world seems to have a celebration for everything," that Thanksgiving thing that'd happened the previous month, for example, or the myriad other celebrations that'd confused him.

Not that he could bring himself to complain, really.

Bethany grinned a bit. "I heard a rumor that there's at least three holidays that celebrate nothing but drinking. At least one of them is New Years."

She assumed Marian and Varric would be all over that one.

Try as he might to stay stoic, Fenris couldn't help a short laugh. "Hawke and Varric are going to love that. I get the feeling there'll be a drinking contest during at least one of these holidays..."

If not all of them. How Hawke and Varric hadn't done themselves permanent damage yet was honestly beyond him. Maybe it was a mage and dwarf thing.

Bethany giggled, but then shook her head. "Listen to me, I'm terrible, teasing them when they can't even joke right back. Maker, what's come over me?"

Deep down, she was really still a very good girl at heart. Teasing Marian where she couldn't hear just felt like cheating.

"Besides, I'll probably be drinking a bit as well. Stroud didn't really let us celebrate anything, so it's been awhile."
