Melora Hawke is plotting something ([info]smallbutdeadly) wrote in [info]utr_logs,

Who: Aedan Surana and Melora Hawke
Where: Morrigan's woods
What: Nothin'!
Warnings: None

Melora had met Aedan in this spot a dozen times before. There were a few different spots in the woods they usually rotated, to avoid notice. She was hidden high up in one of the thick trees, completely still and nearly invisible. She watched the area closely, waiting for the first sign of her friend.

His mention of Morrigan made her just a little nervous. Back home Melora didn't worry too much, because Morrigan gave Aedan a great deal of freedom, and probably wouldn't waste her time following him. Now, though, Aedan said he was still training with her. She probably had him on a tighter leash. Hopefully she wouldn't come looking.

Aedan was still learning the woods, little by little. He wasn't sure if he'd ever been in this spot in particular - things did tend to blend together a little, sometimes - but he knew enough to not get too badly lost. Especially when he stuck to his wolf form.

When he reached the area, he shifted back into his human form, glancing around. She... couldn't be up the trees, could she? You'd have to be insane or something to go up one of those... "Melora?"

It would be crazy to just jump down from as high as she was. There was some rustling as she dropped down from branch to branch and then finally onto the ground. "Hey, Aedan!" She smiled brightly, running a hand through her hair and shaking the leaves out.

"You were up there?" he'd tried to track her movement down the tree, once he'd noticed, but it was a little difficult to get his head around. He understood hiding, but that was on an entirely different level. "You're... just a little bit crazy, aren't you?"

Not that it was a bad thing. Crazy was good, made life interesting.

"What?" Melora asked, confused by his surprise. "It's just a tree," she said with a shrug. It wasn't like she'd been hanging off the side of a cliff to hide. She was comfortable in the woods, and climbing trees was nothing. And she wasn't that high. "Besides, you get a better vantage point from up high. You know that," she said with a warm smile.

"It's a very tall tree, for someone who can't shift into something that can fly," and even by Aedan's standards it was. Not that he was scared of heights or anything, because that'd just be silly. "But, yeah, good vantage point, I guess. I mean, that's how I plan things when I have a choice with the shifting."

"I wasn't that far up it," she said, shrugging. "Only about thirty feet." It still would've been pretty messy if she'd fallen, but she knew she wouldn't fall. She'd been climbing trees since she started walking. "Don't worry," she said with a bright grin. "I know what I'm doing."

"How're you?" she asked.

Only? Yep, she was crazy. Very, very crazy, even if she did know what she was doing. Wasn't like that could keep bad things from happening.

He rubbed at the back of his neck, shrugging slightly. "I... guess I'm okay? It's... been a while since anyone new was in the woods," oh, Maker, he was bad at talking to people. "Guess that's what happens when you're out in the middle of nowhere..."

She didn't think he was bad at talking to people. Of course, she was sort of biased. She smiled cheerfully, shrugging. "I'll probably visit a lot now. I like it here."

"Yesterday was kinda crazy. Stefan and I had to tell our parents about us." She winced. "It was...weird."

"I guess that Stefan's your brother?" he probably should've asked things like this earlier, just to make sure he didn't make any awkward assumptions, but it'd slipped his mind. Probably because of simple shock that she knew about his problem and seemed to somewhat believe in him.

That aside, though. "At least your parents probably aren't like mine. I think mother seriously considered trying to obliterate me somehow when I first turned up."

"Yeah, Stefan's my brother. And they didn't threaten to blow anything up, but at least your mother was kind of prepared, right? She knew about the possibility of you existing? My parents were like 'What? Kids? We're not going to have kids, go away crazy people.'" That was a slight exaggeration, but it had felt like that for a little while in the middle there.

She gave him a half-smile. She didn't want to complain too much, especially since he didn't really know her. He was willing to roll with it, at least, which she appreciated. "Just.. crazy day."

"Well... kind of? One of the first things she said to me was something like 'you shouldn't exist'," he'd never pressed further on that and wasn't about to. He liked not being on fire too much. "Pretty sure she's come around to the idea now, though."

To be honest, if she'd wanted to vent her frustrations at him, he wouldn't have minded. Even if it was still a little weird to be talking with someone out here, it was... nice. "I think the vortex means every day's just a little bit crazy here. Some days more than others."

Melora winced a little when he relayed Morrigan's first words. That had to suck to hear. He hadn't mentioned that to her before. Probably because she'd been so much younger than him; the dynamic was a little different now. "That's good. I'm sure my parents'll come around, too. They're trying to act normal now, which is cute, but.. kinda obvious."

"You know what would be really good right now?"

Aedan arched an eyebrow. "Are you going to suggest something semi-crazy? Just wondering, seems like your sort of thing... not that crazy's a bad thing."

Old Gods really had no right to judge when it came to that sort of thing, after all.

"It may seem crazy at first, but I've done this tons of times." A keen observer might notice that those weren't mutually exclusive. "Nothing to worry about. Hear me out. I think we should flying," she said, her eyes full of excitement.

"Aedan, come on! We've done it since I was a little kid!" If it was safe for a eight year-old, of course it'd be safe for her now. She reached for his hand, bouncing excitedly. "Just a short one? Tiny little ride? I promise I'm really good at it!"

Oh, why did he have to be so bad at saying no? Every time he went to try and say it, the words died before he even got a chance. "If you're sure it'll be okay, I guess we could..."

Maybe it'd even help him. If he was lucky.

Melora grinned brightly. "Yes!" Triumphant! Apparently she could still wrap him around her little finger when she wanted to. "It'll be fine. I'll be good. You'll hardly even notice!" She giggled, excited.

He could believe that. His dragon form was large enough that he didn't notice most things, and... well, Melora seemed pretty much a typical elf when it came to height and all that. "You are sure, right? I don't want to end up hurting you or anyone..."

Delaying, him? Not at all...

"I'm sure! I've been riding horses since I was five and riding you since I was seven." Those rides were really gentle, of course, and she was expecting this one to be a little bumpier. "I'm ready. You won't hurt me."

"I... alright." He'd never forgive himself if he did hurt her, in all honesty, but... saying that would likely just jinx things. He moved a little away from her and the trees, just enough to prevent himself from whacking his head on a branch or anything like that, before shifting into his dragon form.

Maybe this wouldn't be so bad. Paid to think on the bright side with things like this.

Melora waited off to the side for him to change into his dragon form before approaching him. He seemed nervous, but she was absolutely confident that everything would be fine, and she exuded that. She gave him a few moments to get settled in the form before walking to his side and climbing up his back.

She settled in just behind his wings, leaning forward a bit to balance herself. Once she was ready--which didn't take long--she reached up and stroked the side of his neck to signal him.

She obviously hadn't been kidding when she said she'd done this before. And, true to what she'd said, Aedan was barely even aware she was there. At her signal, he took flight, doing his best to keep his movements at least somewhat smooth.

One didn't put reins on a dragon, but Melora rarely rode with them on horses, either. She held on mainly with her knees. If he turned upsidedown he could shake her off, but she could take some pretty sharp turns by shifting the center of her gravity and holding on right. If she flung her arms around his neck, that would be the sign that she feared for her life.

She could definitely tell he hadn't had as much practice flying, yet, but he wasn't bad. If he started to lilt too far in one direction, she shifted her balance to help him correct course. True, she was just a small weight, almost too little for him to be conscious of the movement, but she knew how to get a response from him.

Once he'd adjusted to the oddness of the situation, and actually allowed himself to relax a little, Aedan began to realise one thing: with her riding him like this, it was... certainly a fair bit less wobbly. Maybe even a little easier.

Maybe this was how he'd finally end up conquering the weirdness that came with being an Old God? It was a nice thought, at very least.

Once they'd both gotten into the swing of things, Melora took a moment to close her eyes and feel the wind in her hair. It was amazing. She loved flying. There really wasn't anything else like it. She'd tried other things, like para-sailing, but it wasn't the same.

"Aedan, you rock!" she called up to him, grinning as her hair whipped around her face.

That earned a pleased little rumbling noise, the most Aedan could really articulate in this form - well, short of louder, more typically dragon-y things, but he always made a point of avoiding those. This was probably the most he'd enjoyed himself whilst flying since... well, ever.

Why couldn't she have dropped into the universe earlier? It would've made life so much easier.

She giggled at the happy rumble, rubbing the base of his neck affectionately. He was so adorable, even in dragon form. Not an adjective typically applied to Old Gods, but Melora wasn't a normal girl.

He was doing a lot better! Even after the short time they'd been in the air, he was flying a lot smoother. She was barely guiding him at all, now.

He was actually starting to realise that - the doing better thing, not the Melora finding him adorable one. His dragon form had a tendency to feel bulky and unwieldy, especially compared to his bird one, but now it felt quite a bit better, a lot more natural, he supposed. That'd certainly explain why he was seemingly getting the hang of things.

Melora didn't think of him as bulky or unwieldy. She'd always thought his dragon form was sleek, beautiful and majestic. Maybe she brought that out in him. Or maybe she was a little bit crazy. Either way.

She hadn't expected him to fly this long. She'd told him it could just be a short ride, but he was still going. She couldn't be happier.

Being in the air and being far less unsteady than usual had actually made Aedan slightly lose track of time. When it finally hit him that maybe he'd gone beyond the little he'd said, he'd moved to go into land. That, at very least, was something he was good with normally - even if he had learnt the hard way.

Once they were down on the ground, and she'd got off him, he shifted back, unable to stop himself from smiling. "That was amazing..." he'd never really flown like that, not that he could recall. "How did you even do that?"

Melora laughed, bouncing on her toes and wrapping him in a tight hug. He didn't know her very well, but she couldn't help herself. "You were the one flying!" She knew his improvement had been huge, and that she'd had something to do with that, but she wouldn't let him give her all of the credit. "I just leaned a little this way and that. You were the one being awesome!"

Okay, hugging, that was unexpected, but... he wasn't going to complain. Made a nice change, actually. "I don't know about that... semi-wobbly dragons really aren't awesome. Impressive, maybe, but not in a good way."

He'd certainly been called impressively stupid in the past, at least.

She laughed, letting him go and smoothing down his hair a little before she stepped back to be at a reasonable 'friend' distance. "You weren't wobbly! You did great," she said, grinning. She was giddy after every flight, but this one particularly so. "Thanks for letting me fly with you," she said, smiling warmly at him. "I just lo--"

Her words were cut off when they were both hit by lightning. It wasn't a long strike, but it sent Melora stumbling. Morrigan was approaching the two, and she looked furious.

Oh dear. This wasn't going to end well, was it? Acting almost entirely off instinct, Aedan pushed Melora behind him, just in case Morrigan decided to lash out again. If anyone was going to take responsibility for this, it'd be him.

"Mother, I'm sorry I didn't say where I was going," he wouldn't be surprised if the lightning was the least of what she was going to do. Some things, it seemed, barely differed between universes. "I just... it's not like I wasn't training. I think I'm even doing better now."

Melora barely realized what was happening. Her ears were still ringing a little. She didn't have any intention of moving, though, when she realized she was behind Aedan. Her hands on his back, she healed them both. Hopefully that would clear her head, too.

Morrigan glowered at him. "Yes, I saw what you were doing," she said, her tone icy. "It has to be one of the stupidest things I've ever witnessed." And given the amount of time she had spent with Aedan's father, that was saying something. "Aside from the danger," not that she really cared for the random elf girls that seemed to flock to her son, "you are not a workhorse! You're an Old God! You should act like it!"

Aedan had actually assumed she meant more the danger to their privacy out here. Not that it seemed to count for much, considering Dar had been able to find them out by accident that one time. "I was careful. Mostly. I know it's not like an Old God, but..."

There was really no explaining this, was there? At least not in ways that Morrigan wouldn't take as evidence of further stupidity.

"You don't give pony rides for the neighborhood children, Aedan. It isn't dignified." She hadn't been this angry with Aedan for a long time. Being an Old God wasn't only about knowing magic and changing into a dragon. He had to learn to behave himself, too. He couldn't fall for every pretty face he came across. What possibly could have possessed him to do something so stupid? No. She didn't want to know. "Go inside. Now. And you." She leaned to the side to see around Aedan. "Go home," she told Melora. Next time, she would set the girl on fire. She turned around and started stalking back toward the house.

Well, yes, there was that, but... for the first time in a long while, Morrigan saying something like that actually didn't put Aedan off. He deserved to have the occasional nice thing, he'd just... have to be a lot more sneaky from now on. Somehow.

"I'm sorry about mother," he murmured, turning back to Melora. Surely she wouldn't mind if he delayed just a little. "Maybe if we're more careful we could... meet up again sometime? She can't stop me going out for good."

Dragon-related things might be out, for a time, but it wasn't like it was the only thing he could do.

Melora had stuck her tongue out at Morrigan after the woman had started walking away. She quickly pulled it back in when Aedan turned around, blushing. Yeah, she wasn't the most dignified person, either. "Yeah," she said, smiling sheepishly. "We can be careful. Meeting again sounds good."

In Melora's world, Morrigan had eventually started ignoring Melora's visits. Of course, Melora had been a lot younger than Aedan, then. Things were a little more complicated now.
