Who: Gwen and Arthur
Where: Palace
What: Dinner
When: Backdated a long while ago.
Warnings: None, I'm sure.

Gwen felt very small. She had found some very nice dresses at her home, which helped, but she still felt very out of place. She was suppose to be in the shadows helping women like her look pretty, not be the one out front. The Queen had sent a driver for her. The Queen had rolled out the red carpet, and made drastic steps to impress her, which only served to overwhelm her. It was very different to have someone trying to set her up with Arthur instead of trying to sweep her away.

She arrived, servants taking her coat and making sure she was comfortable in a very nice room while the finishing touches were being done in the dinning room.

Gwen gave a little smile at that. "She is very fond of Kate. She doesn't know me." His nervousness was actually very cute and was almost relaxing her with it's normalcy.

That didn't sound like what he was going to say. She stood up, "I'm ready whenever you are."

Arthur shrugged. "As far as she knows, it's the same thing." It made a big difference to him, of course. He wouldn't have called off the wedding if it had been Gwen. He coughed when he realized that.

"Would you... Could I..." He sighed, shaking his head. "Here," he said, taking her arm in his while they walked. It was strange being able to openly show his affection for her, even in such a benign way.

Gwen took his arm and followed him into the dinning room. "I'm still happy that it's just you and me." She blushed.

Arthur smiled, looking a little more relaxed finally. "I...me too." He was a little embarrassed by the queen's obvious 'set-up', but it wasn't necessarily a bad thing.

He waved a servant aside and pulled out a chair for Gwen. "You look beautiful," he said, almost without thinking before he spoke.

Gwen smiled, looking bashful. "I'm sure I don't compare with some of the princesses you've seen, but thank you."

Arthur gave her one of the looks he typically reserved for hearing Merlin spit out one of his crazy ideas. "What?" He realized after a moment that it probably wasn't polite to look at Gwen like she'd sprouted a second head, and composed himself.

"Gwen, you're right. You don't compare to other princesses. You exceed their beauty, by far."

Gwen smiled, looking away shyly. "I. Thank you." She was rather embarrassed.

Arthur smiled, tucking Gwen's chair a bit in after she sat down.

"I'm very glad you're here, Gwen." He hadn't really realized how lonely he'd been without her. He hadn't courted anyone back home, so he hadn't thought being here could be that much different. But it was. Gwen--even though he hadn't courted her--had filled some sort of special role in his life.

Gwen took her napkin and placed it over her lap, smiling up at him.

"I am glad I'm here. I'm glad you and I are here. We would never be able to have a time like this back home."

Arthur cocked a brow, smiling. "I hadn't thought of it that way." He'd complained a fair amount about the changes. No knights, no decent swords or armor, an obnoxious queen to listen to.. He was happy to see Gwen again, but he hadn't been thinking about the positive changes this world had.

He chuckled a little, glancing down at his glass as a servant filled it. "This is nice, isn't it?"

"Very nice. Things are different and it takes a lot of getting use to, but the idea that I can sit down and enjoy a meal with you without someone saying I'm bewitching you is very nice." She couldn't help but remember being locked up for 'enchanting' Arthur. Him offering to give up his crown for her.

"I. To be able to be open with my feelings, it's a little difficult. I'm use to hiding in corridors."

Arthur didn't remember the incident she was referring to, but his father had accused Gwen of witchcraft more than once. Uther thought of Gwen as lower than dirt, and Arthur had defied the king's orders to rescue her before. To be open...

Arthur nodded. "It's.. yes. I still feel as though someone is spying on us." He chuckled, shaking his head. "It's very strange to think we don't have to worry about being caught."

"It's a hard feeling to shake," she agreed. resisting the urge to look around. "The queen is actually in support of us. No sneaking around."

He smiled, a little bashfully. "No sneaking around," he agreed. The servants brought the afternoon tea, and Arthur tried to be more respectful to them than he usually was. Gwen used to be a servant, after all.

It was nice that they'd chosen tea instead of dinner. It was a lighter meal, giving them more time to talk and making things feel a little less formal and awkward.

As the meal went on Gwen felt more and more comfortable, chatting about little things in her house and things she'd discovered since coming here.

It seemed like no time before all the dishes were cleared away and the meal was over.

Arthur had probably mentioned how glad he was Gwen was there several times. It made for bad conversation, but the thought kept working its way through his head. He made a little bit of chatter about Merlin, and mentioned his father's strange new position.

After a while, Arthur realized that he couldn't keep her there all night. "There's a dinner meeting the queen wants me to attend," Arthur said, sounding regretful. "I suppose I should walk you to the car."

Gwen nodded, smiling. "I should probably get home anyway," she said, smiling. She got up from her sear and followed him out to the car.

She turned to look up at him. "Thank you. I had a wonderful afternoon."
