Entry tags:ariel, ikuko, mary, mephisto

Who: Mephisto, Mary, Ariel and Ikuko
What: Some really weird sort of family get-together.
Where: Mary's apartment
When: Tuesday
Warnings: Sweary demon, antiquated sweary angel, over-exuberant nephilim, overtly friendly virgin mother. So basically no.

Mephisto had been told about Ariel's issues regarding the relationship between himself and Mary, and while he really couldn't care less about what Ariel thought of himself or his relations with the reborn mother of Jesus, he was still somewhat looking forward to meeting him again. They both, for what it was worth, hadn't seen each other since large changes of status on both sides had occurred. He had been fumbling rather gracefully in the kitchen, helping Mary prepare ice cream and cookies in preparation for the arrival of the newly-born angel and his lover, and once Mary shooed him out of the kitchen for being more of a nuisance than a help, he went to go make himself more useful for his own purposes. He had been working on trying to implement a new way of at least letting his eyes seem more natural in look, without the use of sunglasses, which had become a useful tool in masking it, while not completely disguising his clearly unnatural pure-white eyes.

It was Ikuko who hopped up the stairs to the apartment first, excited to meet Mary and see Mephisto as he'd become. She had no predisposed opinions of Mephisto other than what she'd made for herself when Mephisto and Raziel were still in the singular, so she wasn't really in any sort of wary state or even remotely worried. She'd already scolded Ariel for worrying too much, in fact, telling him that until given a clear REASON for worrying, that he oughtn't. "Thanks for bringing me with, Ari," she stated brightly, "it's really nice of you to let me meet this Mary you've told me so much about!"

Ariel had argued briefly with Iku about being careful, but had given up due to her irritating-yet-admirable insistence on being neutral. He was ready; that was all that mattered. "I owe my life to Mary," he said, smiling faintly. "She's a joy." It was why this mattered, obviously. He didn't anticipate any fireworks; Mephisto wasn't so stupid as to pick a fight with innocents present, let alone the Virgin, who he seemed to care for. Nonetheless, old habits died hard.

He knocked at the door, trying to appear calm and neutral while aware that he wasn't entirely succeeding. He wrapped his other arm around Iku's middle, more to reassure himself than anything else.

When she heard the knock, Mary squealed happily and wiped her hands on a rag before bouncing over to the door. Her hair was up in a loose ponytail and her apron was smudged with a tiny bit of finely ground tea, but she was beaming when she opened the door.

As soon as she saw Ariel she wrapped her arms around his shoulders, hugging him tightly. "Oh, it's so good to see you, it's been way too long." Releasing him, she saw Ikuko and laughed out loud. "He didn't tell me you were beautiful! I'm Mary, it's so good to meet you." Not the sort to shake hands upon meeting someone, she wrapped her arms around her too. "Come in, both of you, I just finished making ice cream and cookies and a cheesecake for us all."

Mephisto heard the knock as well, and appeared out of the hallway to the bedroom, wearing sunglasses and had a cigarette dangling from his lips. While still not entirely used to the layout of Mary's apartment, he navigated well and gracefully, enough where his blindness was masked under a good fake of acting. "I'll open the window, Mary" he said, the demonic depth to his voice subdued entirely, "it's a bit stuffy from the baking." He didn't acknowledge the guests just yet, not until he got a satisfactory reaction out of Ariel. He went to one of the windows in the living room and opened it fully, glad that they were enough out of the city where the pollution didn't filter in near as much as it could have.

Ikuko beamed at the compliment, bowing her head in greeting, "Oh thank you! I'm Ikuko, Ari has told me so much about you. You're lovely, too, you know. And so is your home!" She slipped out of her shoes, more out of habit than anything.

Ariel introduced the ladies, for the sake of politesse. "Kada Ikuko, I present Mrs. Mary McGee." It was perhaps a little jab at the demon, but it was also technically her correct name. He'd sensed the malevolent presence as soon as Mary had opened the door; a lesser man might have quailed before it. Ariel addressed it full-on, calmly and coolly. "I regret I've not been informed of what name you are using nowadays. Do pardon my rudeness."

Mary shot Ariel a brief Look before sighing and looking back at Mephisto. "If you'd like, I can turn on the ceiling fan." Instead of arguing with Ariel or preemptively scolding Mephisto, she took Ikuko by the hand and led her toward the kitchen. "We'll let the boys argue with each other for a minute. Would you like a drink? I have lemonade!"

"I believe she is no longer going by McGee, Ariel," Mephisto said with a sly enough smile, before walking to Mary's side and brushing his lips against her cheek. "I'll be on my best behavior. No arguments here, I assure you." That said, he turned to Ariel and offered a hand. "I see you've come into your own rather quickly! Good for you, if there was one thing Heaven was lacking, it was pessimism."

Ikuko laughed at the entire thing, under her palm, and then nodded to Mary, "I would! Thank you. The gentlemen can polite each other to death, it'll at least be entertaining to us girls."

"My apologies. It is technically her correct name, and I get the feeling Ikuko-san prefers formality." It was all true, actually; he would have been openly rude if he'd wanted to start a fight. "I will ask her what she prefers."

When the demon offered a hand, Ariel raised an eyebrow, but he did take it - he was wearing gloves, after all. "I'm afraid I never could be utterly sanguine about anything. What's that old saw? Misery loves company?" Also true - the demon-angel had never been the most optimistic about much. "I also freely admit a touch of paranoia." No reason not to.

Grinning at the kiss to her cheek, Mary returned it with one of her own. She only waited a moment to make sure the handshake went well before walking with Iku to pour her some lemonade.

As she handed the other petite woman the glass and turned to cut up lemon wedges, she grinned wickedly. "I do say, old chum," her voice sounding eerily like Ariel's, "you're looking awfully tired these days." Then she giggled and tried her hand at Mephisto's, with less skill, but still eerily so. "Well, you look like a stupidhead, I do apologize for being so forward."

Mephisto tutted, "No need to be paranoid. I wouldn't do anything to upset Mary, and whether or not you've decided to hate me simply because of what I am, or what you've attributed to my doing alone and not a collaborative effort between both ends of my former persona, I simply can't hate a man who spent so long learning from both ends of me. How is that old curmudgeon getting on, anyway? I haven't had the heart to go and say hello for myself."

Ikuko couldn't help but laugh outright at that, "Oh, goodness, that's them to an eerie degree! You know, I wish they'd just throw down and get it over with, it'd do the both of them some good. Just... not here, maybe in a desert or something, where there wouldn't be any casualties. If they hate each other so much, might as well, right?" She thanked Mary for the lemonade and took a sip of it. "Tension does nobody any good, and as beautiful and wonderful as Ariel is, he is also the tensest man I've ever met."

He wanted to believe the demon, and his reply had at least less frost and more logic. "Would you be any less careful in my position? I somehow doubt it. Demons are the yin to the angelic yang, so to speak. And for whatever you are, you are not a fool." Ariel shook his head. "I suggest you leave Raziel to me, if only for the sake of Lady Astaroth." It was perhaps harsh, but true; he knew the demon didn't entirely disdain Ash, and to hurt her might pain him.

"Probably it would help them a bit, but I doubt they ever will. They're the most polite arch-nemeses ever. Would you like a bit of lunch, or are you like me and just have sweets whenever you want?" She chuckled and moved to pull out a plate of matcha whoopie pies from the fridge. "Boys, come have a snack?" She was hoping that would diffuse the tension a smidge.

"I wouldn't bother him, because the two of us spent far too long in each others' presence as it stands. Frankly, he's a bit of a downer," Mephisto said, head tilting up at Mary's call to them, "Try to have some fun, Ariel, existence is full of unknowns, and the last thing you want to do is fill all your time with fretting." That said, he patted the angel on the shoulder and walked towards the kitchen.

Ikuko beamed at the telltale green of the cookie and shook her head with a conspiring smile, "Ariel told you how fond I am of matcha, didn't he? That sneak of a man," she said in the most fond tone, looking over to him with love in her expression. "Thank you so much, Mary. So I must ask, how did you get mixed up in all these angels?"

Perhaps he ought to have explained Mary's role better. He heard Iku's question as he followed the demon into the kitchen, having resisted the urge to make a face and disinfect his jacket. Ariel smiled, answering Iku. "I told Mary no such thing; she's simply a supreme hostess." He said, inclining his head to Mary herself.

Grinning at Mephisto, Mary couldn't help but beam with pride at how sweet he was being. Granted, she was smart enough to know it wasn't really sweetness, it was mostly just politeness, but it still pleased her.

"Oh, thank you, Ariel!" She handed him a cookie as well, and a napkin, making sure he had something to drink. "He did tell me you're from Japan, so I thought maybe something that reminded you of home would be okay. And I don't know, I got picked a long time ago to be friends with them all, I guess." She smiled fondly, not really thinking of herself as special, or as having a reason to be chosen.

Ariel's subtle reaction garnered a smile from the demon, who walked to Mary, subtly running his fingertips over her shoulders before sneaking away one of the whoopie pies from the plate, taking a bite of it, standing opposite of Ariel. "If I may, she's one of the many humans that the heavenly host tapped to do great things for their kind. Prior to this iteration of her, her soul and DNA were both within a woman who gave birth to Jesus. Of course, Mary herself did no such thing, but I think it's simply the soul that attracts all manners of celestial forms."

Ikuko just tilted her head to all that, "Oh, so you're that Mary, now it makes sense. I just met Ariel and um, well. That's that. I didn't even know that I was related to any of them until after we started dating, so it's more coincidental than anything, to me. I'm really lucky, I think. Even to know the darker end of things. I always got the impression that the Christian devils were more warlike than well," she then waved her hand in Mephisto's direction. "Not bookstore employees."

"They often are." Ariel replied. "Sometimes, however, they prefer manipulation and seduction to outright war." It was the Virgin's own truth; Asmodeus won his way with charm, not force of arms. "Angels are more apt to be physical in their fighting. And this gentleman has always been a somewhat special case." He even managed to keep most of the derision out of his voice. It was also a true fact; as far as he knew, there'd been no one like Mephistopheles before or since.

"He's also very pretty," Mary teased, leaning over to kiss Mephisto. She wanted to keep things somewhat light, if only for her and Iku's sakes. She liked the other girl, appreciated that she didn't fawn over her upon finding out who and what she was. "It seems like it was a really wonderful coincidence for you, Ikuko. Ariel is a wonderful man." She squeezed his hand and moved to sit down, looking up at the men to follow suit.

"So, what have you two been doing to keep yourselves busy?" Hopefully anything Ariel said that Mephisto thought was objectionable would be neutralized by Ikuko's adorableness.

Mephisto had always found Ikuko an incorrigible sort of sweet, to the point where she would kick people if they were too sullen, and the way she summarized the whole notion of the two kingdoms amused him, and when Ariel added to it, he nodded, "Thank you, Ariel." Once kissed, he wrapped his arm around Mary and put his lips against the crown of her head, resting easily with her there.

Ikuko beamed as she sipped her lemonade, "We just moved to Paris! I've been decorating like mad for months, now. It's really nice there, I've always loved being surrounded by rich history, and if there's anywhere with more history right in plain view than Paris, I haven't been there. And all the art! I've taken Ariel to art museums and he spends some of the time explaining the alchemic connections to some paintings to me. Who knew!"
