WHO: Ariel & Raziel
WHAT: Tactical discussion
WHERE: Uruk
WARNINGS: Doubtful

Ariel popped into Uruk, waiting near the front door for someone to notice he'd arrived. He'd agreed to come to Raziel to discuss the current state of things, but he still felt a bit intimidated by its pomp - and perhaps a trifling bit by its mistress, still. Astarte was lovely, but still queenly. She'd also clearly gotten the sanity in the family. Ariel couldn't stop the curl of his lip, remembering the past week. At least he would see Iku soon; he was going to meet her in Paris as soon as he'd finished here.

Eventually, he did hear footsteps, and advanced. "Raziel, is that you? It's me." Of course, the blind Fallen knew his voice by now.

Raziel realized that the long hall of statues was likely pitch black and with a quick and subtle movement of his hand, he had the oil lanterns start burning, illuminating the white marble walls and floor. "My apologies, that should've been the first thing I thought to do. Is that better?" He folded his hands behind him, turning his head to hear Ariel better. "I am glad you came."

"Much, thank you. I didn't want to start walking and break something." Statuary, or himself. "It was no trouble to come here; I wanted to see you for myself." Ariel smiled a little. Yes, he wanted to make certain Raziel was himself, at least for the time being, but he did worry about his teacher. "I hope I'm not disturbing the mistress of the house?" Formality, maybe, but he didn't want to do anything to upset that lady.

"No; Astarte was expecting you to come and take my attention, it is fine." He bowed his head before leading Ariel through to the garden, which was also illuminated, this time by large, semiprecious gemstones that he'd enchanted to glow with an inner light - spires of quartz and amethyst lined the walkways and were tucked into the bushes and crooks of tree branches. He had also summoned up a table of granite with chairs of wrought iron recently, and took a seat in one, summoning glasses and brandy for them.

"I was told by Astarte that I was not entirely myself at the dinner on Saint Valentine's. What concerns me is that I cannot remember parts of it, except for in the same way I seem to recall the past three and a half thousand years. As if a sheer curtain is over the whole memory."

Ariel shook his head. "You were a charming host - Iku spoke highly of you - but I knew something was off, though I've no idea if anyone else did." He sat opposite his teacher, looking around at the beautiful garden. It was rather a pity the being in front of him couldn't see it, though of course he wouldn't think such a thing too loudly. "There were brief moments where your eyes flashed pure white. They never lasted too long, but they were there. I probably looked rather inappropriate, staring at you as I did; I had to make sure it wasn't myself hallucinating, rather than anything wrong with you."

"I... am thankful that your astute and likely ingrained sense of paranoia about me has become useful," murmured Raziel, who poured the glasses for the two of them, before facing the garden, listening to the small night-bugs call to each other. "I hope also that your unique perspective and newfound knowledge may come into use. What I know now is yielding little results in a solution. Perhaps that is his way of meddling. He will not be destroyed if he has any say in it -- since we are the same creature, we are both creatures of habit, and we're in the habit of living."

Ariel shrugged. "I can, of course, do some research. It is - was," he corrected himself, "my life's work, after all." He hesitated, looking away, not wanting to say anything about the conversation he'd had with Asmodeus, and yet ... "I did have one discussion during last week's abominations which keeps coming back to me." He took up the brandy glass, downing half of it in one long swallow; it suddenly seemed necessary.

"It still is, you're the keeper of that knowledge in its entirety, you must simply think deeply about it for it to come to you," Raziel murmured, clearly not enjoying this discussion at all, running his long nails around the brim of the glass.

"With Asmodey? What did he have to say to you that is in any way important?" The demon was not high on Raziel's list of fun topics. He hoped that Ariel's mind was still in one piece, himself, after even a week of Asmodeus' meddling. The devil worked fast.

Ariel shrugged. "He said he might be able to help, as a favor to his sister." He took more brandy. "He said you can't exactly exorcise a devil that's part of yourself, which is true enough. I've split a soul before, you remember, but I did it with the consent of both halves of you, so to speak. I'm not entirely sure I could do it again."

The glass shattered under the pressure of Raziel's fingers gripping it so firmly, and he hissed, "No. Unacceptable." The tone in his voice was one which Ariel was intimately familiar, however, without the hellish undertones of it, or the power of the Voice he once had, it simply was a cold, angry statement.

"I would not trust him in my mind. He would make quick work of removing all memory of Astarte, all love of my brothers, all care for you. No, Ariel. That is not an option."

He'd expected that, and said as much. "I would be remiss in not mentioning it, my friend. It's abhorrent on every level, but I would not forgive myself if I did not examine every option." Ariel shrugged, sitting back. Even if he remembered Asmodeus saying Raziel would do exactly what he'd just done, he wasn't about to push the issue right now. "I'll just have to find a way to split a soul with only one-half consent, so to speak."

"I'm too weak for that. I have a feeling that it only worked because of how powerful I was, how much I could endure," He shook his head, sending the glass shards off to wherever, before replacing them with another glass. "This seems only more and more to be a practice in futility. If there were anyone with the powers that he has, I would gladly take them over him, no matter who they were." He meant that, too. And he needed to pace, so he stood slowly and started to do just that, going over the options. "No. He must be bluffing, there has to be a way that I can exorcise that part of me. Some spell, some rite."

"I am not sure if anyone has those powers. None of your - " He stopped himself. "None of the archangels can do this?" Perhaps Michael, or - drat, perhaps Raphael could do it. Of course, that didn't help them at all.

"None which are here. Perhaps Azrael, but he wouldn't use his powers so flippantly, even to help me. And it makes me wonder why he left those shards in me to begin with. No, I don't particularly trust him with that either, even if he can." He faced Ariel, brow furrowed, "Uriel could. Damn." He shook his head and continued to pace.

Ariel cocked his head to one side. "Azrael used his powers to save you. Why do you assume he wouldn't do it again?"

"If he had that power, he would have done all in his power to destroy every part of the devil within me when he saved me, Ariel. Don't be so dense. If he does have that power, it means he left them intentionally." He slumped back into the chair and took the glass of brandy, drinking it all in one go.

"I'm not so sure of that." But he shrugged; he could simply ask Azrael at a later date. "What do you propose, then? I absolutely refuse to sit back while you attempt something mad alone."

"I've no idea." And he sincerely didn't. It was the first time he'd ever dealt with anything extraordinary that he couldn't immediately find a magical solution. This was, of course, because he gave Ariel that power. It irked him to no end, and that fed into the side of him that he most certainly did not need to grow more powerful. He tried to calm himself, taking the bottle and pouring another drink for himself.

"It could have gone a lot worse for you, all things considered," mentioned Raziel, who was straining to keep his tone level, "and for myself as well. I am grateful that even though I was mad, I had the presence of mind to come to you at all. You could have been taken by him. Azrael. You could have succumbed to Mephisto. All things considered, I am grateful that the pieces fell as they did."

Ariel shook his head. "I know things could have gotten a lot worse. Last week reminded me." The worst part was that part of him had thoroughly enjoyed last week. "I'm not sure being taken by Azrael would have been bad ... but the alternatives, well." His own tone was far from even, and he stood. "Allow me a moment, I'm going to step into the garden." It would allow both of them to clear their heads, even for a second.

With a silent nod to Ariel's decision, he ran his nails over the lip of the glass again, tapping them against the sides of it, and he considered what Ariel said.

What would Asmodeus get out of helping him? What would he be extending his offers of help to him for right now, except to destroy him? No, Raziel thought, that would be like walking into a den of hungry lions, to give himself over to the demon. He knew Asmodeus well enough where he knew that once he swore vengeance, he would get it, one way or another, and as it stood, Asmodey had no blood on his hands from this last declaration of revenge. It was suicide to consider.

Ariel took a moment to walk among the paths, to marvel at the stones and flowers. He felt a bit refreshed when he came back to the patio. "Miss Astarte must love this place; it's really quite lovely." He sat back down, pouring just a bit more brandy for himself. "I'm sorry; I was having difficulty keeping my mind on task. I think it's better now." He was no longer so frightened or neurotic as he'd been as a human, but nonetheless. He worried.

"By all means, if you need the time to clear your mind, take it, Ariel. My thanks, I brought it back to as it is from memory. The stones, however, were my addition." He shook his head again, "The only reason I could think of that Asmodeus would even wish to get so close to me is to destroy me. As you know, he swore vengeance on me for his death. He will not be satisfied until he gets that revenge."

"The mere feel of this place must be a boon to you." Ariel sighed. "I know what Asmodey is, I promise. This last week did not change my mind on that. But we've managed the utterly impossible before; I didn't think it wise to neglect anything at this point." He knew Gabriel wouldn't raise a hand to Raziel unless left with no other choice; the same applied to Ariel and Raziel surely knew that. Anything to avoid a stand-off.

"I... cannot trust him. He has done too much in my presence to allow me to trust his presence. But he would also do anything Astarte asked of him." He tapped his nails on the granite top of the table, considering. "Ariel, what would you do? You have my memories, my knowledge... You have your own wisdom - what little there is of it," he teased, "but it is a different perspective."

"I don't blame you for distrusting him; I do too." When he was in his bloody right mind. Still. Ariel looked up at him. "He would do anything Astarte asked of him? That may be something." When Raziel asked him what he would do, however, he hadn't expected it, frankly. After a long pause, Ariel replied. "I would speak with Astarte, first and foremost." His tone was gentle, respectful. "I know that your pride rebels at asking her to become involved with this. But if you need to owe anyone, let it be the woman you love, instead of, say, some upstart alchemist led violently astray." If Asmodey would do anything for Astarte, it would be foolish to not at least explore the possibility of saving her lover for her. "If you refuse, or if she can do nothing, then, well, I will think of something." Bravado, yes, but masking worry.

"I doubt she trusts him any more than either of us, but if it is the best option, I shall not eschew it." He sighed and shook his head. What a mess.

He decided to switch tracks then, to his old standby, "You would have told me if you'd found the riddle by now, my friend. I'd thought you would have figured it out by now. What distracts you so much that you have yet to find it? Should I simply give you the answer, save you the trouble?"
