What: From Shadow Gallery to Guildhall

When: About 6 hours after he came in, on Friday, Jan 21, 2011
Warnings: Possible swearing and superfluous verbosity.

V had the presence of mind to make an extra batch of cookies, and calling out for a courier to send the first batch to Penelope's flat, safe in a tin wrapped in the color printed first page of a newspaper and a silk ribbon with a tag with his trademark V signature, he packed up the second tin full of cookies and made sure that he had his wig and mask on straight before starting out of the flat to the closest portkey.

He hadn't expected the pull to his navel that it gave him, nor the fact that it landed him precisely three inches higher than the ground, but he caught himself gracefully and he walked down the long drive of Guildhall, smiling under the mask, though it didn't show except for the way his movements had some bounce to them. He knocked gently at the front door and put his free hand behind his back, and the tin of cookies against his chest, to show that he came bearing gifts.

Petit had, in fact, just finished the payroll, like she'd figured she would, and wasn't at all surprised by the knock, making sure she was at least mostly presentable before going to answer the door, "Ah, just who I expected. C'mon inside." She said, pushing the door the rest of the way open and stepping aside.

With a bow of his head, V stepped over the threshold with a "Thank you for inviting me, Miss Petit, it is an honor." He held out the tin to her and in a lighthearted tone, he explained, "I made an extra batch of jam filled butter cookies specifically for the occasion." It didn't show in his movements, but he was looking around the area around him - up the stairs to the second floor, back and down the hallways that led into the large mansion, and into the two arched doorways that flanked the foyer - the kitchen and meeting/dining room, it seemed. Under his cape glinted the handles of his knives.

"I can wholly appreciate the mentality of not keeping proper hours, so to speak. As one who does not need much sleep, it is good to meet others of a similar mentality and mind frame."

"Well thank you." she said of the cookies, "They'll be gone in no time around here." A shrug, "And irregular hours is just the nature of the business, really. Though it helps that I'm one of those people who doesn't need much sleep and can nap anywhere."

A smile, "So, welcome to the guildhall, it may be lavish, but I call it home."

"What may be lavish to some is elegant to others; I find it reminds me of my Shadow Gallery, though perhaps a little less crowded. A Guild, you say," V intoned in the form of a question, "and what, pray tell does this guild of yours do, Petit?" Considering the warm welcome of several people - an archangel among them - and most making mention that he knew of him, it would seem rather surprising to him if this were not a guild of ne'er-do-wells just up his alley of work.

"Assassins and thieves, my very favorite," mused V with a chuckle, "I dabble in both, though with the welcome I received on the forum, I have the distinct impression you already knew that. Considering what I see of London now and how it seems unlikely to change into the London I knew in the near future, I will have very little by way of, as I like to think of it, hobbies to keep myself occupied in this new and intriguing world. You may call on my services should you ever need a hand." Freelancing seemed a fine way to keep himself occupied, he figured.

"So, what else could be said of this world, save for the portkeys and the heavenly host?"

"Yeah, I knew, know." A shrug, "Whichever." She nodded towards the kitchen then, "c'mon, I'm going to put these away, and there's all sorts here, superheros, reformed supervillains, actual supervillains, historical figures, myths and legends, the list goes on. There's the bi-annual zombie swarm, the occasional genderswap, that one time we were all in space, if there's one thing this place isn't, it's boring."

"I wonder which of those categories I fall into, myself..." He murmured before falling silent, leaning against the island counter in the center of the kitchen, arms crossed over his chest, but not so tight as to hinder his hand's motions, as he seemed to talk more with his hands than most. It was to make up for the lack of expression. "No, it does seem rather like a roller coaster ride of excitement and intrigue. Zombies, however... The traditional voodoo gris-gris variety where a houdon enslaves the minds of men and brings them to a half-dead state to make them perform tasks of his choosing, or more of the cinema sort, undead and highly infectious?"

"Mostly the movie kind." She said with a nod, "Don't know about how contagious they are though, don't think anyone's ever actually been bitten, which is kind of amazing if you think about it." A shrug, "Could be people are getting bitten and then cured when the horde goes away to wherever it was before, huh. Should look into that."

She shook her head then, "Could whip up a couple of the traditional kind though, if they ever became necessary." A shrug, "I'm the local voudun priestess. Voodoo queen of New Orleans, as they say."

"Is that so?" He turned to face her, head tilted to one side. "You are truly a multi-talented lady, in that case. I prefer to keep myself on the scientific side of things. I may be a great many things, but fool enough to attempt the arcane and ritualistic magics is not one of them." He crossed one leg over the other as he leaned on the table. "I would most certainly never argue anyone else's right to do that which pleased them, but I have limits of my own."

"Some of the staff lives on site." She said, heading down the main hall, "Most of them don't, but it works either way, we're pretty self-sufficient here. Couldn't last more than a week or so, but usually any craziness going on outside doesn't last that long and we can go out for groceries again when it blows over." She gestured, pointing out doors, "Offices and meeting rooms, storerooms, there's a sparring ground in the basement, range out back for archery or thrown weapons."

He followed with his hands behind him, and though he may have seemed distracted by the occasional painting or sculpture they passed, he was listening, "Do many people use the range? Archery seems such a sadly overlooked sport; I am quite proficient in use of the longbow." Not, of course, as good as he was with his knives, or even with the rapier, but keeping his aim sharp was important to the masked man.

She was fine with the apparent distraction, really, that was half the reason things were where they were, "Most of the residents do, from time to time, and a couple family friends. My daughter usually does when she comes by to visit, though in her case it's throwing and not archery."

"Rather a fan of throwing as well." He turned from a painting that he was certain was in vault of the Shadow Gallery in his reality. "I say, Petit, I feel as if I may have found a heaven after some looking after all."

She grinned, "Throwing runs in the family, my mom uses knives mostly, but she uses the traditional family weapon of plates too, I mostly stick with the plates, though I'm not terrible with knives, and Henn, my daughter, uses a little bit of everything, her favorite, I think, is scrap porcelain figurines, though I seem to recall that she said 'glass makes a better boom'"

A shrug, "And we're all birds of a feather here, I have a feeling you'll fit right in, whenever you'd like to come by."

"Throwing plates you say?" V asked with a tone of intrigue, though it was laced with a thoughtful wisdom like he had heard of a story about them, which he most certainly had. "I, like your mother, am a knife thrower, though I may have to - at some point in the near future - ask for a demonstration of your capabilities with a plate. It seems like quite an interesting weapon to be passed down."

He chuckled and bowed his head, "My humblest thanks for the open welcome, and," he said, showing to her that his hand was empty in an idle way before he seemed to produce a business card, which he'd struck out his telephone line from the prior world and wrote down another. "The first order of business for me was to find that I had a secure method of communication, which I now do. Leave a message, as I will never answer, but I will always check." His head canted to the side briefly, "I suppose tomorrow's order of business is to check to the new affairs of my bank accounts and getting a new set of cards printed."

She nodded, "The accounts are always a good place to start. Mine weren't in the best of shape when I first arrived, but I've taken care of that since. And for a while an older version of myself was here in my stead and she helped a great deal."

A smile then, "But yes, plates, and I'm always happy to give a demonstration, as is my mother, though she'll tell you I'm better at it, apparently I took to them like most don't."

"Is now an acceptable time to ask that you do? I will trade you in kind," V suggested, tapping the handle of one of his knives. "It is always good to see what one's peers can do, and I must admit, I've only ever read of anyone using plates as a weapon, and it was only one woman in a fiction story."

The card had already been spirited away somewhere, in much the same manner as it had first appeared, nodding at the question, "Sure, just have to get them from my office on the way out back." Which she did, unlocking the door and taking the bag down from the coatrack without even turning on the light, she knew where it was. She shouldered the bag as she headed outside, "It might be the same woman, ancestor of mine, apparently fictional in some places."

V waited in the hall as she procured her bag of plates, and nodded to her supposition, "It's very possible. She killed a man who wanted no tricks from her so he had her dine in the nude, with no sharp utensils as part of the bargain. She killed him with the plate upon which dinner was served," summed up the masked man, who held the outside door for her. "I see that you've a garden, my dear. Would it be at all overwhelmingly rude if I asked to tend to it for you? I left mine back in the other reality, and I would dreadfully miss gardening."

"That's her." She said, about to add more when she was sidetracked by the next question, she grinned, shaking her head, "Feel free, I can garden, I know how it works, I'm just not terribly proficient at it, and I'm pretty sure the only reason most of the plants are still alive is because the guy I got them from is some sort of plant-whisperer."

"I'll see to them. I already vaguely smell that you've mandrake planted nearby. It makes the ground smell different. And where there's mandrake, as I like to say, there's always belladonna. What masks them the best are lady carson roses. Very fragrant, and between the three of them, need of a very particular feed of fertilizer and chemicals from which one can make a very fine 'boom'." He shared cordially, almost amused, in fact. He stood at about fifteen yards from the targets on the other side of the long yard, and turned to her, ready to watch quietly.

She laughed, "Belladonna and monkshood, and a few others besides." She pointed to the gardening shed just off the edge of the actual grass, half-hidden in the treeline, "That's my workshop, well, workshop for the extracts and tinctures, anyway."

She took up position then, stretching her fingers and rolling her shoulder as she opened the flap on her bag, shifting two plates between her fingers in her off-hand to use as backups and taking a third in her dominant hand, careful, as always, to grip them along the few inches of dull edge.

The first was thrown as a gauge, and the next two in quick succession, off hand already dipping into her bag to retrieve another, even without a warm-up, she was still in top form, one of those things she'd always been good at.

He'd been about to reply about the workshop and how he'd had a room for such delicate work himself, but he was caught off his guard by the speed of the throws - not that he'd seen nothing like it, just nothing like it coming from anyone BUT himself - and he chuckled delightedly, clapping for her once her plates had all hit the mark. "My goodness, dear, you really do make it seem all too easy."

That was when three rapidfire "Thwok!" noises were heard and his cape ruffled back. He'd had his non dominant side facing the targets as he faced her, but the knives that had made those noises were holding steadily in a tight triangle and the other three shortly followed with a graceful step to make himself face the target, making the triangle a cicle of points. That left two knives which he spun in the palms of his hands, first one way, then the other. "Death's made me rusty, I see."

"It does that." She agreed, smiling crookedly, "But a little practice and you'll be right at the top of your game again." That was the voice of experience right there, though she'd only died once for sure, the second time, or, rather, the first time, she'd been revived without having to resort to a failsafe.

The knives fell out of the target, taking a rather nasty and large chunk out with them, which was V's intent for them to do in the firs place, it just took time for gravity and the weight of the knives to work the litle cone-shaped plug out of the target. That was V's cue to sheath his other two knives and start walking forward.

"Can't say as it ought to have, it took me ten years into the past, though who knows how long it's been for my spirit to get here?" He retrieved both the plates and the knives, before walking back and handing her weapons to her, careful to hold them out dull side facing her. "They're no heavier than any dinner plate I've come across. Very sneaky, milady." Though he did have to crouch down slightly just to point out the sharp edge of one side of his mask, which ran all the way up to the top ridge of it. It was only due to the fact that his cowl was a heavy leather that it didn't bite him most of the time.

"It works many duties, after all."

"That's the point, story goes that they used to be stored with the regular dishware, just in case. Enameled metal isn't all that uncommon in roma-gypsy households, er... caravanholds, tends to last longer than ceramic. " She shrugged, "And it wouldn't do anyone any good if intruders could tell the weaponized ones from the regular ones just by heft."

She tilted her head at the mask-edge, smiling a moment later, "Clever. Batman could learn a thing or two from you."

"Well that's true." She said, and knowing her it was a response to all three of the statements, tucking the plates back into their compartments in the bag, "One thing I haven't mastered is being able to throw accurately from horseback. Granted, it's not a skill I'll probably ever need, mom can do it, but she traveled with a circus for a while, and that's where she learned it."

"That is well talented, Petit. I can't say I've had a chance to hone any such skill, as I doubt I've ever been in the presence of any horses. If I have, it would have been long before I became that which I am." He gave the slightest of shrugs and led the way back up to the porch and to the door, where he held it once more. "I must admit, your family sounds simply fascinating, honing such interesting skills. I must ask, does your mother have just as remarkable eyes as you? I've seen nothing quite like them."

She slipped through, hanging the bag on the hook by the door along with an umbrella, an apron, and a crossbow already hanging there where most people would keep keys or kitchen spoons, "No, the eyes are from my dad's side of the family. My daughter has them too." She shrugged, "So does my son, for that matter."

"Black sclera generally isn't something one would find on any healthy individual, though they've body modifications to dye the sclera colors these days. Such a strange practice..." He offered quietly, and although it wasn't able to be seen, he'd arched a brow to the crossbow next to the apron. They truly were birds of a feather.

"I suppose I should badger off now, as late as this hour is," he mentioned, almost offhandedly, "I've much to do, but the primer on this reality was quite informative and I am grateful for your help, my dear. I will phone you or contact you on the forums when I intend to come see you in the next few days, and I will start tending to the garden at my earliest possible chance."

A nod then, leading him back to the front hall and the door, "Any time, someone's usually around even if I'm not. The snappy dresser is my consigliere, I'll make sure he knows you've got a standing invitation."

"Ah, genetics. They were trying to toy with them in my reality, and in yours, it seems that genetics was toying with us. Hayfever notwithstanding," he joked as he walked back to the front door, taking the handle. "I'll be sure to be as non-threatening as a man in a mask could possibly be. Farewell for now, Miss Petit."
