Who: Nimue and Merlin
What: Spazzy times
Warnings: Probably not.

Nimue had known her destiny for as long as she could remember. There were nights when she had wished it would change, but still the same dream. She had dreamt the same fate countless times. Even when it seemed unpleasant, it was comforting in a way.

Her arrival here had thrown a wrench in the works. Merlin was so young, and claimed to know very little. Still, Nimue believed she was working with the same destiny. She would wait patiently while the boy grew and learned, and then she would ask him to finish her training. It was her destiny, after all. It was all she could do.

Then, after having been in this strange world for about a week, she had a fate dream. Only... this one was empty. She was floating in space, and all of the markers from her destiny were drifting away from her. She couldn't catch any of the pieces. Everything was fragmented, and she was losing them all. By the end, there was nothing left but emptiness.

Nimue sat straight up in bed, gasping for breath. Her body was covered in sweat and she was shaking. Blood was rushing through her ears, pounding until it felt like her head would shake apart. Her fingers clawed at the blankets, trying to grab onto something that wasn't there. Something beyond her reach. What was she?

Merlin woke up, feeling himself tugged from an empty dream he couldn't quite remember. He sat up and looked around the dark room. He could almost swear someone was calling him, this tug in the back of his mind like he had forgotten something important or he had to go somewhere. It was like it was just out of his understanding, just on the tip of his tongue.

She willed herself out of bed, still shaking. This couldn't be happening. It had to be some sort of mistake. It wasn't a fate dream. Just a bad meal, perhaps.

She made her way to the bathroom and turned on the light. Her reflection was pale and ashen. She pulled the stopper on the sink and began filling it with water. Once the basin was full, she said a few words over it, casting a scrying spell. She was a lady of the lake; even if all other paths were cloudy, water would provide her destiny.

There was nothing. Nimue shrieked and slammed her hand down onto the sink. A chunk of porcelain broke off and fell to the ground. Her hand was bleeding and several bones were doubtless fractured, but the pain didn't quite make it through the shock and panic. She collapsed in a heap on the floor, crying.

There was another tug and Merlin remembered what Nimue said about the tug before being transported to her. Was she calling him? Did she need him. The more he thought it the more he was sure, almost positive that's what it was. He tried to tell himself that it was just a silly thought, that he shouldn't go to Nimue's place in the middle of the night. She would be asleep. But he couldn't brush the feeling that Nimue needed him.

He found the crystal around his neck and focused on it, thinking of Nimue.

Nimue's calls had been unintentional, for the most part. She was in a panic, reaching out for her destiny, and Merlin was that destiny. Or, he had been. The stone was still on her bedside table, untouched.

When Nimue felt Merlin's arrival, it felt distant and strange. It was like she couldn't focus on anything. She tried to climb to her feet but failed, sliding back into the fetal position. Water was leaking from the broken sink onto the floor, and she had bled onto her satin nightgown. What a mess.

Merlin looked around Nimue's bedroom; light came in through the bathroom and he could see she wasn't in her bed. He followed the light and saw Nimue curled up on the floor with blood and water around her. He went to her quickly, trying to see where the blood was coming from.

"Nimue, what happened?" He reached for her, putting his hand on her arm.

"It's gone," she whimpered, grasping for Merlin's hand. The bleeding wasn't too bad.. Just some scratches, nothing deep. It looked worse than it was, because the water was helping it spread. The fractured bones in her hand were the worse injury, but even that Nimue wasn't paying much attention to.

"Everything's gone. There's nothing, just emptiness!" The pitch of her voice was rising, and she was very clearly panicked. "I'm just floating, just.. Drowning in nothing. Merlin, it's all gone."

Merlin pulled her close to him, looking at her hand, trying to see how much damage was done. He could see that it was just a scratch, tried to look around to make sure there was nothing else going on.

"Nimue, I don't understand. What's gone?"

Nimue leaned against him, her good hand clenching his arm as he examined her. "My destiny. Everything. My.. my reason for being, Merlin. I have nothing. No destiny. No purpose. It must have... when I came here... It's gone, Merlin." Her whole body was shaking.

Merlin held her close, rocking just a little. He didn't know what to say. He didn't really think about destiny much, but seeing as Arthur wasn't here, and no Camelot, he supposed his destiny was very different as well, if he had one. "I'm still here. It's okay."

"Don't leave," she whispered, quieting a little as he held her close. At least he was there. She didn't know what it meant, but he was there. "I don't know what to do," she said after a time. "I've always had my destiny. There were times parts of it seemed unpleasant, but it was still there. It was still better than... nothing."

"I'm not leaving," he assured her. "Maybe now you can make your own destiny?"

"How?" she asked, looking up at him. "How do humans do that? I.. I don't even know where to begin. Everything's always been written out for me, Merlin."

Merlin shrugged, jostling her a bit. "One day at a time. I was told part of my destiny, but it didn't tell me how to make my everyday decisions, the ones that mattered. You just do what you think is right from day to day, hope it turns out all right."

"I just.. don't want to lose you." She hadn't said that before because she'd been too concerned with keeping appearances. With her Merlyn too, she didn't want to give him too much--didn't want to make herself too vulnerable--by admitting she loved him. "I know I would have lost you eventually, but.. Please don't leave." Begging a boy wizard. Clearly her world had crashed around her ankles and all that was left was madness.

Merlin looked down at her, "I'm not going anywhere. I won't leave as long as you want me to stay, I promise." He wasn't really thinking about what he was saying, it just seemed like the right thing to say. Not like it wasn't true, just instinctual. He wouldn't leave her.

She knew she was repeating the same request over and over, but all her former guarantees were gone. Nothing was written anymore. And who would want to stay with a deceptive enchantress who'd tried to trap you in a cave? But Merlin promised, and she would take him at his word. She took a quiet, shaky breath and nodded. Then she rested her head on his shoulder and closed her eyes. "Thank you."

She couldn't yet believe there was any way for this to be a good thing, but as long as Merlin stayed, she wouldn't be completely lost.

"You're welcome," he said. He just held her, letting her take her time calming down. Thinking about it he wasn't really sure he was doing all the right things, but he couldn't think of anything else he could be doing. She was really the only person here who knew him.

After a while, she opened her eyes and looked up at him. "I think I broke my hand," she said, chagrined. "And the sink," she added, glancing at the chunk of porcelain on the floor. "Really, I'm normally much more composed than this."

Merlin grinned at her a little, looking at her hand and then the sink. "Okay, the sink isn't hard." He looked at it and his eyes glowed as it put itself back together. "We'll get you to the hospital for the hand. Is that all right?"

She smiled at his quick repair of the sink. It gave her a good idea of where his skills stood. He was good.. It was a basic spell, but he did it with such ease, such off-the-cuff subtlety. She was impressed. But he had much to learn.

She shook her head at his suggestion of the hospital. "I would prefer sleep. Here...the basic structure of the spell is the same as the one you used on the sink. It just gets a bit more complicated when working with living things." She gave him a reassuring smile. She was confident he could do this. "Focus on the shape of a hand, weaving it back together. Then the incantation." She said the words slowly, without any power behind them. She wanted him to learn. Her first act as a free woman could be teaching her old teacher.

Merlin paled a little. "I don't know. I mean, I remember trying to do this with one of my friends in my home town. It didn't end up very pretty and his leg was worse off than if I hadn't done anything." He remembered how his friend, William, hadn't wanted to get into trouble. He said, you fix broken things, why not my leg? He had studied some anatomy since then, hoping if it came up again he might be able to do something, but he'd never tried it. He repeated the incantation without any power behind it, just to make sure he could pronounce it right.

"Are you sure you want me to try?" Part of him did think he could do it, but the bigger part was too scared to mess up. Shouldn't he try this first on an animal or something?

Nimue nodded. "I trust you," she said. She trusted him completely. And.. Well, if she was wrong, it would be a lesson from the universe about playing with destiny.

She nodded at the necklace she'd given him. "The crystal can help you focus."

Merlin took a deep breathe and took the crystal into his hand. He remembered his anatomy, thinking of the bones and muscles looking like they were suppose to. He took her hand, being careful not to cause her more harm while holding it.

It took him a while, focusing on what he wanted to happen, making sure the image was perfect in his head before he said the incantation, pouring power into it. He felt shifting under her skin, just a very tiny bit, and then the spell was over. Everything looked fine. There were no bones popping out from her skin like the last time he'd tried it.

"Is it okay? Did I do it right?" He was biting his lip, hoping that it really did work and that he, at least, didn't make it worse.

There wasn't any pain. She turned her hand over and flexed her fingers. "It feels perfect," she said, smiling. "Marvelous work." She yawned. Healing took a lot out of her, regardless of which side she was on. Her life force had been helping knit things back together as well. She felt exhausted.

"Can you sleep here? Please? There's just one bed, but I promise I'm far too tired to try anything devious." She yawned again, leaning against the wall. "On second thought, you keep the bed for yourself, I'll just sleep on the floor."

Seeing her yawn made him yawn. He suddenly felt very tired and tried to hold onto her words. He saw her leaning against the wall falling asleep as she spoke. "Floor would probably not be comfortable, or good for healing," he managed to slur. He forced himself to stand and moved to help her do the same. He walked her to the bed and helped her lay down. He looked around for another place to sleep and not seeing anything, and feeling like he could sleep standing up, lay on the other side of the bed, over the covers, and fell asleep the moment his head touched the pillow.

She managed to stand up and get to the bed, with Merlin's help. She had the blankets halfway over her before she fell quickly into sleep.
