Who: Aziraphale and Mephistopheles
What: Reuniting and welcome wagon
Where: Nemo's Rare Books, London
When: Saturday evening
Warnings: Meph has a potty mouth, occasionally.

Mephisto had been feeling far better since Wednesday, and after yesterday's revelation, he had redoubled his efforts to pack as much of human life as he could into his schedule. He told Ariel that today, he'd take care of the shop on his own, so he was at Nemo's, a quaint little rare book store in the heart of London, filled with not just old, interesting books and the occasional grimoire, but artifacts of a mystical nature, which suited the proprietor and the fallen angel of hidden wisdom just fine.

When he felt Aziraphale return, all Mephisto could do was roll his eyes and huff a small chuckle. Of course the guardian of the east gate would find himself back. What baffled Mephistopheles, however, was that the damned little snake that often accompanied Zira was nowhere to be felt. Well, figured the fallen angel, if Zira had anything to say about it, he would. In his opinion, all the better. Crowley was a bother at best. He kept the shop open later than usual, and rang up customers in wait for Zira's arrival, while working on writing in his journal of human experiences, occasionally peering toward the door. Zira was one of the few angels that Mephisto could tolerate, if only because he'd spent just as long on earth as he had.

"He enjoys far-eastern things most of all. If that fails, you could bring him brandy and he would be quite fine with that." Mephisto said and smiled faintly as he felt his brother's care for the books. It was comforting in its own way. "They sing to you like nothing else. I'm glad that has never changed."

"I merely forgot to listen, for a time," Zira replied. He recovered from what could have been melancholy, face brightening with a smile. He vowed not to make the same mistake again.

"I'm quite certain I can think of something appropriate to bring."

"That's one thing your true lovers will do that all others will not, my brother. They will wait patiently for your return." With all other forms of intimacy and love, Mephisto was particularly disinclined, but the love of writing and reading was one he understood entirely. "I will pay for whichever ones you wish to take home with you tonight. Consider it a welcome-back gift."

Mephisto was rarely one for gifting things, but well, Zira didn't bring the demon clamoring at his heels for once, so Mephisto felt outright celebratory.

"You are too kind, brother," Zira said with a shake of his head. He wanted to think he wouldn't take advantage of his brother's generosity, but he was already calculating, trying to decide which book he would like to take with him when he left the shop, when in fact he'd like to take them all. "I will take my time to listen to them all."

"You could no sooner choose a single star from the sky, or a single fish in the ocean, I know. It's half the reason I even work here," mused Mephisto. "Perhaps there's one that needs you more than the others, and that's the one you should bring with you." He tilted his head with a small smile. "Ariel also keeps special books in the back here, grimoires and books of great value. I would sooner trust you with them than I do him, though, so I see no harm in letting you have a look."

Zira couldn't deny that he felt a tingling run up his spine at the thought. He took a breath to try and contain his excitement. He had maintained a modest library in the lower rooms of Crowley's casino, but he hadn't truly immersed himself in the glory of a book shop back room for many years. He hadn't really thought much of it, but now that he was removed from the relationship with Crowley, he saw how the demon had denied him his simplest pleasures as a means to control him. Well, he was not going to give Crowley so much satisfaction to even give him more than a passing thought, now, or ever more.

"Would it be unbecoming of me to insist that you take me to this back room without haste?" Zira asked, taking care to keep his voice even.

"By all means," Mephisto said with a low chuckle. Such excitement could be seen with or without eyes, even if Zira kept his voice even. Mephisto led the way and waved his hand over the lock before opening the door to the small room with ancient and powerful books that nearly hummed with their energies and spoke their histories with their covers before even a page was seen. He ran his fingertips lightly over the spines of several of them.

"I'm glad, you know," he said as he took a seat at the table, where there were four books set out already, "that you arrived without him. It is no secret that I have rather dissenting opinions about him, one of which was that he spent far too long stifling the beauty of a creature who deserved far more. And that is all I will say to it."

"You need not say anything more," Zira nodded. he moved into the room. The books called to him, their voices pulling him in every possible direction. He wanted to touch each one, speak to them all as they spoke to him.

"I loved him. Some part of me will always love him. But our love was terribly destructive, over time. I allowed him too close, and that is all I wish to say on the matter. Should he return to this place, I've no doubt he will not be as he was, but as he once was in centuries past." Zira tilted his head, and then the moment passed, and he chose a book, or a book chose him, and he pulled it to his hands.

His expression turned to something soft, and sincere. He caressed the book's cover, allowing the words to speak to him as they would. His eyes closed and he breathed in a deep breath, unnecessary but to take the scent of the book in to him. "This is the one," he stated. His eyes opened and he looked to his brother with a slight smile.

"A love that burns bright and devours all around it, like fire," whispered Mephisto with a nod. He looked up to see the book that his brother had chosen for himself, and couldn't help the grin that spread over his face. "Oh, that one's been here, waiting patiently for you this entire time. I'm sure of it." He picked up one of the books he'd set on the table and brought it out with him, back to the front of the shop as the door closed and locked behind them. He wrote off the expense of Zira's book in the ledger, with a note that read Gift, Meph. to Azira. 11/12/10 before setting his journal atop his book and looked over to the angel.

"You're welcome back any time. Now, to go get that wine I promised you," he put his hand on Zira's shoulder, and then started to turn off the lights with a faint wave of his hands.
