Who: Damon Salvatore & Elena Gilbert
What: Meeting for the first time since she got here, and she's not exactly thrilled.
When: Immediately following this conversation.
Where: Some local restaurant in Georgia where Damon's at.
Warnings: Possible swearing from Damon and some angst. Yup.

Elena was completely confused. Florida was a long ways away from Mystic Falls and the website Damon had shown to her hadn't exactly made things perfectly clear. The fact that the last thing she remembered was hugging Jeremy's body after Damon had snapped his neck and then left combined with the other fact that the Damon she was talking to said he didn't remember any of that still made no sense.

She wished Stefan was here. Or even Isobel, because at least she would know what exactly was going on.

Part of Elena was happy that it seemed like Katherine wasn't around at the very least, which was good. Then again, it also meant that Stefan wasn't around so she was back to being that lonely little ex-cheerleader whose parents died, leaving her alone. Except in this world, she was alone with Damon, someone she had come to truly trust and care about until he'd tried to kiss her and...

Using the port key he'd told her about, she tried to shake it all off. From Florida to Georgia, back to some good memories where she'd saved his life and he'd saved hers.

Elena stood in the doorway to the restaurant, scared. Not scared of what Damon would do to hurt her, but scared of what was going to happen next, frankly.

"Hey."

With menu in hand, Damon began to look for something to eat. His eyebrow arched and his ice blue eyes peered over the menu to look at her. Her words intrigued him and he simply smirked, the only obviousness to her was the crinkles near the corner of his eyes.

"I'd like to show you," he said.

"Would you?" She was teasing back, trying for normalcy in a world that wasn't normal at all and ignoring the fact that the "something" she knew she had with Damon was coming back easily for a girl who had just watched him "kill" her brother.

"Let me guess. Would you cook for me, too?" Not that she'd admit she enjoyed the times he'd come over to her place unannounced and spent time cooking for her.

"Yes I would," Damon said, grinning. "To both questions. I love to cook. And I like to think I've gotten fairly good at it over the past few decades."

Which was saying something for a rich Southern-born man who had servants most of his life that did almost everything for him. One of the hardest things he had to adjust to after becoming a vampire was becoming more self-reliant, but he liked to think he had adjusted well.

She put her menu down and shrugged a little bit. "I suppose that having someone cook for me wouldn't be so bad considering that my new job here is waitressing." Again, Elena tried her best to ignore the very good points that Damon was making.

She'd gotten pretty good at lying to herself about how Stefan was the perfect boyfriend, considering how nice Damon had become recently and how they'd had to lock up Stefan so he wouldn't kill people. Or the story of how they both became vampires to begin with...

"Hamburger with fries, please. I'm starved." Elena paused. "Could you come over to my place and make sure it's vampire-safe?"

"I'll have the same, extra pickles," Damon said, the last a bit more of a tease to Elena at the last time they ate out in Georgia. Once the waitress was gone, he addressed her question. "Of course I will."

There was something that had been niggling at the back of his mind since... well technically since the incident, but it was coming up now so he would ask.

"Can I ask you something, honestly?"

Elena rolled her eyes and as she was about to take another sip of her beer -- careful to nurse it now instead of just getting drunk -- she stopped at Damon's question.

"I've always been honest with--" Frowning, she corrected herself. "I've tried my best to be honest with you. Feel free to compel me if you really want to, though." Not that she thought he would. She liked the idea that he trusted her.

"No need to compel you," he said. He was quiet a moment, almost as if he wasn't going to ask now, but it was more him gaining courage. He wasn't sure if he'd like the answer if she knew.

"Did you..." he started, frowning. "You didn't have anything to do with helping Stefan when he poisoned and imprisoned me, did you? When I was still with Caroline?"

If Damon really thought about it, he would have realized she couldn't have because she hadn't even know Stefan or he were vampires at that point.

She nodded at his answer, expecting that, and clasped her hands in front of her on the table, waiting. His question hit her like a ton of bricks, though.

"What? No, I... no. Look Damon, you pissed me off while you were with Caroline because I know you didn't treat her well, and God knows what else you did to her. Feed off her, compel her to be some sex slave, whatever. But no, I didn't."

She frowned at him. "Why are you asking me this? I thought we were past all that, I thought you wanted to move on and..." Elena couldn't finish her thought.

"I do, that's why I asked," Damon admitted. "I just..." he sat back some, sighing. "It's been in the back of my mind, constantly biting at me and wondering. So I need to ask, find out the truth and get it done and over with."

He was glad to know she had nothing to do with what Stefan did.

"I just needed to know that, even with how angry you were, that you wouldn't be apart of letting me starve till I couldn't move and being locked up for at least fifty years." He leaned forward again, resting his elbows on the table. He never looked at her, simply stared at his hands.

"Caroline... at the time was a means to get close. And feed. And have that relief there. But if I could change how things happened, the things I did..." He shook his head. "Never mind. Forget I brought it up. New topic." He remembered telling Stefan that his guilt and remorse were his own. He wasn't going to off load them onto Elena, it wasn't fair to her.

It was a lot for Elena to take in, and she rested her head on her hands as she absorbed it all. "If the two of you would stop fighting for one tiny moment, then maybe things like that wouldn't happen," she muttered more to herself than anything.

She wanted to apologize for Stefan's behavior, but then again, Damon had fed her his blood and threatened to snap her neck once. She ended up just rolling her eyes at him.

"Damon," she started, staring right at him, "if you could change the things you did, you'd do everything the same way because you wanted Katherine out of the tomb and with you." She smiled a little to let him know she was calling his bluff, and that despite whatever he did, she wasn't mad at him. Right now.

"Okay new topic. Did you sleep with Isobel?" The small smile was on her face still, because Elena wasn't sure how much more revelations she could handle.

The thing about being a vampire was the super hearing. He frowned, shaking his head. "No it wouldn't," he said quietly. "Stefan made a choice almost two hundred years ago. Made it for the both of us and because of it we lost everything. He made the choice to regret it years later and became what he is now."

He sighed a bit more. Always about Stefan, always about his regrets and his supposed redemption. Once again, passed over for the beloved St. Stefan.

He leveled his eyes on Elena as she spoke. "What I did to Caroline had nothing to do with Katherine, Elena."

The change of topic was not a welcome one. One he hated, in fact. "Unfortunately, yes," Damon admitted. "Just once. The night she asked me to turn her." His eyes unfocused some as he looked away. "If I knew then what I know now..." His last words were but a murmur.

Elena sighed and shook her head. She remembered the full story - both versions - of how the brothers became vampires. She tried to think of something that would get Damon out of this funk, because she didn't like seeing him this way. Typically he would be drunk, not...

"Well, as you pointed out, Stefan isn't here." Maybe that would help?

"And I'm not talking about Caroline, or just Caroline." It was Lexi, Bonnie, everyone who had gotten in the way of him finding his love. "It's okay, Damon. I get it. Really, I do."

She froze a little and nodded her head once. "I am... not surprised." Again, more than she wanted to know, but the look on Damon's face was enough that Elena decided to leave it alone. "How about we change the topic again?"

"No he's not," Damon said, toying with his beer bottle. He leveled a gaze on her with her next statement.

"Actually, I don't think you really do, Elena," he said. "But it doesn't matter. It's in the past, it can't be changed." He gave a non-chalant shrug.

"Yes. New topic."

She gulped at the look Damon was giving her and looked away. It was really hard to have a conversation when Damon gave THAT LOOK at her.

"I do. Damon, really, you lost someone you loved and you'll do what you want to get them back." Why was she arguing this point with him? "And don't tell me what I know or don't know. Out of everyone in Mystic Falls, I think I know you best." She paused. "And accept you the most." Psychopath and all.

New topic, though. Elena looked at her beer and didn't want to ask how long he'd been in love with her like Isobel had said. She didn't want to ask why he'd danced with her at Miss Mystic Falls. So instead she just asked, "Are we.... good here? I mean, you and me." The last thing Elena needed was to know that he was using her as a substitute Katherine or whoever.
