Who: Candy Quackenbush and anyone at the hospital who wants to see her.
What: Stress relief.
When: After Eliot's come back from his ass-kickery.
Where: The roof of Desert Springs Hospital.
Warnings: Yes.

Nathan was with Sam, as he should be. Eliot was out kicking ass, or he'd come back, she wasn't sure. Iggy was with Sam too, and Candy didn't know where Sophie was. Either way, Candy had a moment to breathe. Her bare feet went to the elevator, punching the highest number available. Twelve stories would be pushing her luck for what she had planned, but she could make do. Her toes curled against her bare feet due to the cool floor of the elevator. Her little black dress was a little dirty due to riding in the ambulance and her hair had fallen out of the bun she'd worn it in for the wedding. It hung down around her shoulders, and she knew her makeup was probably smudged. It didn't really matter; she just wanted to be alone for a while. She didn't care too much how she looked, and at a hospital, nobody would question a girl looking lost and sad.

The breeze on the roof was warm, and reminded her that she was in the desert. Her heart ached for Nathan, Sophie as well. Their day had been ruined by the callous lack of care from one drunken idiot. And Sam. She'd wept for him quietly, when nobody was around. Losing a year - especially a year where so much had happened - it just wasn't fair. He deserved to remember Iggy. He deserved to remember Eliot. And even though this meant that Sam wasn't mad at her for being with Eliot, it wasn't fair to any of them. She felt at fault. If he hadn't been outside, if he hadn't been mad at her, if she hadn't leaned over to kiss Eliot's cheek at the reception, maybe Sam would be okay.

She moved to the edge of the building, climbing up so she was on the edge. The concrete was rough against her palms and feet, but soon she was standing, looking out at the twinkling lights of the strip. Her eyes closed, and she hoped that nobody was at Sam's window. She took one step and closed her eyes, feeling herself fall. The wind whipped her hair, and as she descended, she murmured her spell. The glyph formed almost instantly - she'd gotten faster and faster the more she'd practiced, and she grunted in surprise as solid light buoyed her aloft. Flipping as the glyph formed, she whooped, feeling herself ascend. The craft shimmered, made of words made into light, and she was glad it had a roof. She continued to spin, giggling at her own playfulness, feeling the stress leave her muscles. She did easy loop-the-loops, and for about ten minutes, felt peaceful.

Landing the glyph on the roof, she let it sit for a moment. She'd nicked a guard's cigarettes while he wasn't looking, and she returned to sit on the edge, lighting one and blowing a smoke ring.

"Yeah." Eliot joined Candy in the shower. He moved into the stream of the water, letting it cascade over him from the front. He turned his face into it, letting the water soak him from head to toe. He turned around, and put his hands to his hair to push it back from his face.

Beating up the thugs he'd gone after did little to ease his stress, but Sophie had been able to calm him down. And now, this. Being with Candy had a certain effect on him. She understood him in all the little ways he didn't understand himself.

She took the shampoo and lathered her own hair, which took the most time of anything. Once she was washed and rinsed, she moved to him, tiptoeing up and washing without speaking. Eliot communicated through action, not words, and she knew that this was the best way to tell him how she felt.

He did seem more calm than before he'd left. He'd been like a tiger in a cage, pacing back and forth, ready to take a chunk out of anyone who got too close. "Someday, I want to come with you," she murmured. "Been a while since I beat someone up."

"We find the guy who hit Sam, you might have to go to keep me from killing him." Eliot doused his head under the water again, hands up in his hair to help scrub the shampoo out. He closed his eyes, but it wasn't only to keep the shampoo out. He needed a moment, after saying that, essentially admitting he wanted to kill the guy, and that he wanted Candy to make sure he didn't go through with it. Beating him up was one thing, killing someone was a whole other ball game. He didn't kill, unless he had to, though he tended to leave men wishing they were dead.

"Killing people doesn't make you feel better," she murmured. She was speaking from a place of experience, and she stroked his back. "But beating the shit out of him might." She leaned against him, closing her eyes. "Sometimes when you kill people, they just follow you around."

Eliot just nodded. He had no words to say to that. He pushed his hair out of his face, and the weight of the water kept it back. He leaned forward and caressed her cheek, caressed her bottom lip with his thumb. He shifted his stance and bent to kiss her, softly, gently.

"How is it you know me so well?" He murmured, the words barely spoken out loud.

Smiling up at him as the spray moved over them both, she looked up at him. "Because I'm just like you," she murmured, stroking his cheek and smiling. "You're not a puzzle to me. You react how I would to things, most of the time." When their lips parted, she was smiling. "And I don't get why anyone would ever want to change you."

She met his eyes, her mismatched ones sparkling. "Sam's lucky to have a brother like you. And when we kick that guy's ass, you have to let me get a couple of good swings in. No fair hogging them all."

Eliot shook his head. "You're way more adjusted than me." She was a lot like him, and that was actually kind of scary, for him to think about. "Let's just. We should. Downstairs," he nodded, aware he was speaking in broken sentences. She had that effect on him, form time to time. Naked and wet in the shower was an image that could render him unable to formulate words at all, if he let it.

"Only because I'm in the Hereafter." She hadn't called this world that in a long time, if only because the Abarat wasn't easily accessible to her. She murmured to herself, shaking her head. "I want to see you in action, but maybe someday you'll see me."

Nodding at what he said, she rinsed herself off, finding a towel and drying herself off. She smiled at him, moving to grab her clean clothes out of his bag. Wiggling into her jeans, she looked back over her shoulder at him, making them both hairties. She handed his over, smiling. "Wet hair in the face is the worst."

Eliot nodded. He let his fingers brush against hers as he took the hair tie. He pulled his hair back, taking care to pull it tight enough that the shorter bits didn't hang around his temples. His hair tended to curl slightly, when it was wet, and would be a tangled and unmanageable mess if he just left it to hang there without brushing it out or drying it. He didn't want to take the time to do either. There hair tie was just another little thing Candy did for him without comment, just one more thing that made him smile a little bit.

She braided her own long hair, shaking her head. "I remember when Carrion was trying to kill me, I cut my hair really short to try to avoid his assassins. It didn't help, but I'm glad it's long again." Tying it off, she chuckled. "Houlihan almost got me. My hair was about Nathan's length." She tugged her shirt over her head, turning back to kiss Eliot.

It was the first time in a very long time she was glad she lived in this world and not the Abarat.

"Nate's hair is like a spider web, only less sticky. And less organised." Eliot made a face. "I'm glad your hair doesn't look like his. I'm glad my hair doesn't look like his." He shook his head, actually smiling just a little. "More than that, I'm glad they didn't get you. I'd be lost right now, without you here with me." He bent down to tug at the laces on his work boots, so he wouldn't have to look at her after such a bold and revealing statement.

The comment about Nate's hair made her laugh out loud. "I had less gel," she grinned. "He's trying so hard to make it look like he has more hair than he does." She shook her head, lacing her own canvas high-tops.

His comment stopped her in her tracks, and she dropped to her knees in front of him, moving so she could kiss him. It was a light thing, and she smiled. She didn't remark on what he'd said after the kiss, simply finished tying her shoes. "Hungry? I don't think I've eaten in hours."

"Yeah." Eliot put a hand to the back of her head. His fingers worked at the muscles there. "We should go down and see Sam, then go get the girls, take them out for a nice dinner." He was glad, more than ever, that he had Ash with him, that Riley wasn't alone.

His shoes took him a little longer, to get the laces tight enough. He dropped his hand from her hair and tugged at the second one. He didn't reach for his shirt until he was standing. He wore only a T-shirt, he didn't bother with the under shirt he'd had on before, but balled it up and stuffed it in the bag with the rest of the dirty clothes.

"Sounds like a good idea, I'm sure they're bored by now." She smiled and sighed contentedly when he put his shirt on. She'd never been attracted to a guy who was putting his shirt on. It was surreal, and she smiled to herself.

While he put his shirt on, she texted Nathan to let him know their plan, just because she worried about him and wanted him in the loop as much as possible.
