Entry tags:eliot spencer, nathan ford, riley garret, sam ford, sophie devereaux

Who: Sophie Devereaux, Riley Garret, Sam Ford, Nathan Ford, Eliot Spencer - possible others
What: Yay hospital!
Warnings: I don't think so?

Sophie had, as promised portkeyed to Florida right away, finding Riley and explaining the basics of the portkey system to her, waiting until they were in Chicago to slip into a convenience store for some chocolate milk and a snack, the whole time keeping up a friendly banter, wanting the girl to be comfortable.

When they got to the hospital she smiled, leading her into the main entrance. "We're just going to visit a few folk before going home and setting settled, alright?" And with that she went about finding Nate, smiling a bit as she saw him sitting in a waiting room.

Riley didn't like hospitals, but she didn't seem to have the same hangup all of the Ford boys seemed to have. She hung close to Sophie, but seemed generally relaxed and comfortable with the woman. She was a little quiet, but friendly enough.

She smiled up at Sophie, nodding in agreement with the plan. "Are we supposed to get them flowers?" she asked. She'd visited one of her mom's friends in the hospital once, and they'd brought flowers and a card for them.

Nate looked up, at the sound of foot steps. he'd expected Sam, and was more than pleasantly surprised to see Sophie instead. He knew she was coming, but he didn't know when to expect her. He definitely did not expect her to have a child in tow.

He stood and looked from Sophie to the little girl and back to Sophie, brow arched up in question. "Flowers are always nice, but not necessary," he answered the child's question. Something about her, the way she walked, something. He had a flash of Sam, when he was about her age, before he got really sick. He frowned, and titled his head, hoping Sophie would explain without making him ask outright who the kid was.

"Hello, Darling..."

She smiled warmly as she moved over to Nate, pressing a soft kiss against the corner of his mouth, her arm slipping around his waist.

"Riley, this is Nate... He's also a friend of Eliot's. Nate, this is Riley... Eliot asked if I could keep an eye on her, and she's going to be borrowing my spare bedroom for a little bit. How is he?"

Riley stopped a few feet away from Nate, watching awkwardly as they shared their moment. She wasn't used to witnessing that kind of casual affection between adults.

She smiled when Sophie introduced her. "Hi," she said with a little wave. She glanced around the waiting room, eyes passing over the boring magazines for grownups. "Are we here to visit Eliot?" she asked. "He said he's in the hospital."

Nate's eyes closed briefly when Sophie pressed against him. His hand fell to the small of her back, and he simply breathed in the scent of her.

He knew he looked a mess. He hadn't combed his hair, his clothes were unkempt. He probably looked like hell. He was surprised the kid hadn't run screaming at the sight of him.

And he probably looked like a madman as he processed the information from Sophie and the child. Eliot had asked Sophie to look after the child, which meant something. Eliot had a soft spot for wayward kids, but he had asked Sophie to look after this one. Nate would have sworn he felt his brain spasm.

"He's doing okay. He's way more alert than anyone expected after what he's been through." Alert enough, apparently, to seek Sophie out and ask her to look after his...his what? His daughter? That was ridiculous. "The doctor was with him a bit ago. running some tests. I bet he's done and we can go see him now."

She was quiet for a moment, letting him process the news that wasn't exactly hers to give, and fingered his hair just a bit in vain, attempting to smooth it down a bit. It didn't work.

Her calm never wavered, her smile warm as she nodded to Riley. "We are indeed... I wasn't sure what he'd told you, exactly... but hopefully this will cheer him up a bit."

She listened to nate and offered the faintest of nods, not really wanting to talk too much about medical conditions and technical stuff and such with the child present, but glad to hear it anyway.

"Well, then.... let's go see if we can't see how much of himself he's feeling, shall we?"

Riley smiled up at Sophie, glad it was someone she had already met. She nodded. "He said somebody cut his motorcycle off the road and his leg is hurt." When Sophie suggested they go in, Riley nodded again, stepping up to take her hand.

About that time, Sam walked into the waiting area with two cups of coffee. "Sophie!" He grinned brightly, handing one cup to his Dad before giving Sophie a half-hug. "Hey. Want coffee?" He'd picked up the coffee for himself, but he hadn't really wanted it. It was mainly a cover to pick up one for his dad. He held it out for her.

He turned to Riley, smiling. "Hey. Riley, right? I didn't know you were coming." He seemed to be more 'in the loop' than Nate was. Sam flashed a smile at his dad, hoping his head wasn't exploding too much.

Nate took the coffee gratefully, even though his hands were shaking slightly. The waiting room was littered with identical cups, a testament to Nate's resolve not to drink liqueur. "Thanks, son. I..." he arched a brow, gaze sweeping between Sam and Riley, "didn't realise you were acquainted." Yeah, Nate's head was exploding, right about then. Or maybe imploding.

He sipped the coffee, then frowned at Sam. "Decaf? Really?" He glowered, but he knew why. He'd downed no less than four coffees since he'd come to the hospital. The caffeine was making him jittery, he needed to slow it down.

"Hey, Sam.... " She kissed his brow as he hugged her, shaking her head with a smile at the offer of the coffee, particularly after hearing it was decaf.

"Oh no, I'm fine. Riley and I stopped for snacks." She reached out, rubbing Nate's arm lightly, hoping he'd get his answers soon enough, her other hand in Riley's.

"Which room is it?"

Sam shrugged at his dad, offering a small smile. The caffeine seemed to be putting him on edge rather than helping him, and he had to sleep at some point. He'd hoped the hospital coffee was too bad to notice the difference.

"Oh, we haven't officially met," he told his dad. "I'm Sam, he introduced himself, smiling to the girl. He still had half a brownie sundae that was slowly melting, but some how he suspected Sophie's plan of action was a little more important. Brownies could wait. He just hoped Sophie had given Eliot a head's up.

"He's in the first one on the right," Sam said, pointing down the hall. "Follow the smell of steak."

Nate nodded. He was still reeling, from the addition of Riley to the mix, and seeing Sophie after so many weeks. he really wanted to shoo everyone else off so he could talk to Sophie, but apparently, that would have to wait.

He led the way to Eliot's room, a hand at Sophie's back to keep her close. He needed to lean on her, figuratively if not literally. He wasn't sure how Eliot would feel about seeing him, and with a small army in tow, he didn't think Eliot would cause a scene.

"You brought him steak? For the bruising, right?" Nate arched a brow. He wouldn't think Eliot should be eating steak, so soon after his ordeal. He didn't wait for an answer, but pushed the door open at the same time he knocked. "Up for some company?"

Eliot had a bite of steak on the little black plastic fork, and he stopped midway to his mouth. He looked about to say something, but then saw Sophie, and Riley, were with Nate. He nodded. "Yeah. Not really as hungry as I thought, anyway." He dropped the fork and pushed the bed tray away.

He looked to Sophie, acknowledging her with a nod that was as much a thanks, as a greeting. His focus shifted to the child. "And you must be Riley. You look just like your mother, only I think you're prettier."

Sophie moved along with them, offering Eliot a warm smile as they stepped inside hos room and only releasing Riley's hand when Eliot started talking to her. "You've looked worse. They treating you well?" She hardly expected him to actually stay as long as he was supposed to. Even without being a Ford she knew Eliot was stubborn.

As he talked to Riley, she leaned back against Nate, letting him hold on, doing what she could to be there for him silently, and just watching his family try to gel into something.

Sam shrugged at his dad's question. "Didn't think his leg was involved in the digestion process," he said with just a bit of snark. He didn't really see the problem with it, but he was probably biased. He'd hated hospital food, and he remembered a few times when his parents would sneak him something good. Not steak, but little favorites from home.

Riley smiled at Eliot, nodding when he said her name. She couldn't see his legs because everything was covered up with blankets. The parts she could see looked kind of bruised and scratched up, and he had little bandages here and there. She took another step toward him, comforted when he mentioned her mother. "Did you have to get stitches?" she asked.

Eliot shifted, to look past everyone else to nod at Sam. "See, I knew there was a reason we keep you around." He lay back on his pillows, and put a hand out to Riley. He was still trying to wrap his head around the fact she was there at all, but seeing her in person, he couldn't deny her parentage. She did look like her mother, and Eliot could see hints of his little sister in her too. He didn't want to dwell on that, he was certain the memories of childhood would continue to assault his mind once he was alone again.

"I did. Look here." He pulled the gown down from his shoulder, to show a white gauze bandage that was covering a line of stitches about two inches long. "I had a piece of glass sticking out right there. The doctors had to remove it and then patch me up."

Nate stood back, watching Eliot with the little girl. They had worked with kids before, though rarely. Nate had never really paid attention, but thinking back he could see where Eliot had always gone out of his way to give the children a little attention. "He's good with her," he commented to Sophie. He shifted, and a shudder passed through him. "We should step outside, let them have some time."

Sam grinned at Eliot, then nodded to his dad. "Yeah, we should." The three of them stepped outside to give Eliot and Riley some time to themselves. It was an awkward enough situation without all of them hanging around.

Riley peered at the shoulder, reaching out a small finger to touch the edge of the bandage. "I had to get stitches this one time," she told him. "I fell off the swings and had to go to the hospital. But now I have this cool scar, see?" She pulled her hair back to show him the lightning-shaped scar on the side of her neck, below her ear.

[info]thatswhatido

Eliot leaned forward to peer at the scar. It looked innocent enough. A bit jagged, but it didn't look like it had been inflicted intentionally. He believed her falling off the wing story. He knew all too well how an adult could intimidate a child in to telling a convincing lie to cover a horrific truth.

"That is cool. It looks just like a lightning bolt. Does that mean you're a little lightning bolt, yourself?" He asked, grinning at her. Eliot had always had a way with kids. He hated when adults took advantage of other adults, but when an adult took advantage of a child, Eliot wouldn't hesitate to take them out.

His body was a map of scars, many of them hard won in fights, but many of them came from his father's hand. Step father, his mind corrected. His father had just walked out of the room.

Riley giggled and shrugged, letting her hair fall back in place. She wasn't really lightning fast, compared to some of her friends. "I'm not as fast as Johnny. He always catches me in tag." She didn't seem to be scared of all Eliot's bruises and cuts. She knew he was hurt, and was prepared for that.

"Do you want a fruit snack?" Riley asked, holding out the little pouch Sophie had given her toward Eliot. "They're Barbie-flavored." She leaned against the bed, bumping the IV stand a little. "Sorry," she said, hoping that didn't hurt him.

"No thanks, sweetheart. I just ate some steak." Eliot gestured at the styrofoam food box Sam had brought him. "It's okay," He glanced at the IV stand. "Just be careful," he added with a soft, low tone. He was about to yank the needle out of his arm anyway. He seemed to be doing just fine, and he didn't attribute it to the drugs the hospital was feeding him.

"I'm going to stay here tonight, but tomorrow I'll come and get you at Sophie's place, okay? She'll take good care of you tonight."

Riley looked over at the IV stand and the bag hanging from it. "What's in it?" she asked, perpetually curious. She'd seen them before, and didn't really like them. They were kind of scary.

"Okay." She leaned against the bed, careful to avoid the IV this time, her fingers fidgeting with the corner of the blanket a little. "Hey, how do you know my mom?" She wanted to ask him a million questions at once, but she knew it wasn't polite. She would try to ask them one at a time and give him a chance to answer, but it was hard.

Eliot glanced up at the IV bag looming over his bed. "It has medicine in it. See how it drips like that? That way the medicine goes right inside my body and I don't have tot ake any yucky pills." He smiled and shifted a little, to make room for her on the bed. "If you promise to be real careful, you can climb up here and sit with me."

He hadn't known Riley existed, but now that he knew, and now that she was right there in front of him, he felt he'd known her forever. He felt comfortable with her in a way he hadn't felt with most adults he knew.

"Your mom and I were friends a long time ago. Before you were born. I took her out to dinner sometimes, and we went to see polays and that kind of thing. I'm going to tell you sdomething and it might be a little strange at first. but I think it's important for you to know. I'm you dad, Riley. I sure do wish I'd know about you, but your mom didn't tell me. By the time you were born, I was living somewhere else, and I didn't even have your mom's phone number anymore to call her."

"Oh. Mom had one of those once, but it was water, not medicine. She was really thirsty." Riley carefully climbed up on the bed, careful not to touch the IV, and sat on the edge of the bed. She wasn't a rowdy or loud kid, especially at times like this, in a hospital and thinking about her mom.

Sometimes Riley felt more comfortable around adults than around kids her age. Adults usually just expected her to be quiet and stay out of the way, which she was pretty good at. Impressing other kids was harder. She felt really comfortable around Eliot and Sophie, though.

Riley tilted her head to the side when Eliot told her that he was her dad, thinking about it. She wasn't really sure what she was supposed to feel. Her dad had been an off-limits subject in her house, and Riley had tried not to wonder too much about it. She'd been curious, but after her mom got so upset, she'd resolved to not think about it. Now she was not only trying to process that Eliot was her father, but that she had a father.

"Really?" she asked quietly. She looked more confused than anything else. She laid against the pillow next to him, with her face right up next to his. "Mom didn't talk about you." Her voice was almost a whisper, wavering a little.

Eliot frowned when Riley told him about her mother having an IV. He didn't dwell on it, though. Her mother wasn't around, and they had more important things to talk about.

"When I left, your mom and I, we weren't really friends any more. I hurt her real bad, and I'm sorry for that. But I can't change what happened, I can only do better now, right? And I'd like to start by taking care of you. Will you let me do that?"

He'd never considered himself father material. He had no intention of settling down, getting married, having kids. He figured he'd be dead before he was 40, anyway. But now Riley was there, and he wanted nothing more than to be her father.

Riley listened carefully, all of her attention on Eliot. She didn't feel angry at him for hurting her mother. Maybe she should, and maybe she would later, but it wasn't registering now. She nodded when he asked if she would let him take care of her, smiling a little. She wanted to stay with him.

"What's your favorite animal?" Her voice was still a little hushed when she asked the non-sequitur, but she was smiling now. She wanted to get to know stuff about her dad.

"My favorite animal?" Eliot looked thoughtful, though he knew the answer without question. "A horse. I used to work in a stable, where they trained horses that ran in the races." His tone turned a little melancholy, those days were long past.

"What about you? Do you like horses too?" he asked, giving her a little playful poke in the belly. He couldn't move too much because of the IV and the heart monitor he was hooked up to, but Eliot really wasn't the sort of man to sit still for long.

He couldn't help but think if he'd known about her all along, she would probably have her own pony by now. He'd have fostered a love of horses for her, made her an equestrian, if she had any interest in horses.

Riley's eyes lit up. "Ooh, I love horses!" If he hadn't said that, she might have mentioned dragons or unicorns. But all of that went out the window when horses were mentioned. "That sounds so cool!" Working with horses all day seemed like a lot of fun.

She giggled when she was poked. "Yeah! I wanted a horse, but mom said no." They couldn't afford it and they didn't have the room to keep it anyway.

"A horse is a big responsibility. You have to find a stable to board them, and good people to care for them." Eliot reached over to finger Riley's hair, moving it out her face. "After I get out of here, when I can walk again, what do you say we go riding?"

Riley's face grew serious as he talked about the responsibilities. She nodded. "Well, maybe I can work at a stable and take care of the horses." If she owned a horse, she would want to take care of it instead of letting someone else do it.

She smiled when he mentioned riding. She'd never ridden a horse before. "Really? Yeah! Do you have a horse?"

"I havne't had a chance to find one lately," Eliot replied. "But I know a good stable, and I can't wait to take you there." He smiled a soft, comforting smile. He couldn't wait to get her on a horse, show her how to ride. He just hoped the injury to his leg wasn't that serious, and that he'd be on his feet again soon.

"Okay!" Riley said, grinning. She was louder than she had been all night, obviously excited, but she was restraining herself at least enough to keep from jumping around all the medical equipment and stuff. "I can't wait either." She giggled. "Don't let me fall off, okay? Mom always said I would fall off." She stuck out her tongue, clearly not believing that excuse.

"What's your favorite food? And color? And what's your middle name? And can I stay here tonight? I wanna stay with you."

"I promise aI won't let you fall off, sweetheart." He smiled a little smile. Being on a horse could be scary. Eliot had conquered that fear a long time ago and it seemed silly to him now, but he could see that a seven year old would be worried about that kind of thing.

"I think you should stay with Sophie tonight. Hospitals aren't much fun. I have to stay here tonight, but you don't. And I bet you'll have lots of fun with Sophie. She'll probably let you stay up late and eat ice cream and maybe Sam and Nate will go over too. I know you know Sam, and nate, he's the other guy that was here just a minute ago. He's my dad, did you know that? And he's Sam's dad too." Eliot kept an even tone, he didn't want his words to influence how Riley felt about Nate.

She'd asked some other questions. His favorite color, his middle name. He didn't think they were pressing enough to answer, unless she asked again. He was more interested in making her want to go home with Sophie, and not stay at the hospital all night.

"Okay." Riley pouted a little when Eliot said she shouldn't stay there, but it wasn't a long pout. Sophie was nice, too, and that could be fun. "Okay. You just gotta get better." She didn't want her dad to be in the hospital. It was scary when your parents were in the hospital, and she didn't like it.

"So.. He's my grandpa?" she asked, after thinking about that for a minute. It was harder to figure out Sam's relation to her, with the reference point so far removed. If Eliot was her dad and Nate was his dad and Nate was Sam's dad.. It was like a word problem in school. "Sam's your brother? So.. he's my uncle?"

"You got it." Eliot told her. "I have another brother too and he looks just like me because we're twins." That still felt weird. Finding Lindsey again was almost more weird than Nate's confession that he was their father. He'd thought Lindsey was dead, all these years.

"Maybe you'll meet him too. He was here earlier, but he had to leave." Eliot offered a slight smile. "So you're going to stay with Sophie, right? And have fun with her. And tomorrow maybe I'll get out of here and then I'll take you home." Even if he had to use crutches for a few days. Riley was a big girl, he was certain they could manage.

"I have a lot of family here," she remarked with a smile. She'd only ever had one grandmother before, so this was new. It would be fun, getting to know everybody. What if she got her dad and her uncle confused? That would be embarrassing.

She nodded. "I'll go with Sophie." He didn't talk like her mom. Her mom would've told her to go with Sophie and behave for her, not 'have fun with her'. That was kind of different. She still wanted to stay with her dad and talk more, but she would do what he said. She smiled when he mentioned getting out tomorrow. She could probably wait that long.

"Good. That makes me feel better already." Eliot smiled. He fingered her hair once more. "You're being very brave, you know that? I know this is a lot of change for you." He knew her mother didn't have much family. That was one of the reasons she'd made an easy target. Looking at Riley then, her sweetness, her innocence, he willingness to trust him without question, he hoped he never had to tell her just how he'd gotten to know her mother, or the circumstances of her conception. She was a child born of a con. there had been no love involved, no feelings at all from Eliot's point of view. He liked to think he was not that guy any more. When he conned now, it was for a reason, thought out, and designed to help people and punish the ones who took advantage of them. Someone like him ought to have run a con on him eight years earlier, to make him pay for what he'd done to Riley's mother.

"You can stay with me until either Sophie comes back to get you, or the nurse comes to check on me, and kicks you out. Okay?" He didn't want to face the truth of what he'd done in the past, but he also didn't want Riley to leave right away.

Riley smiled, scooting to rest her head lightly on his shoulder--not where the stitches were. "I am? I guess so," she said, shrugging. It was still sinking in. Oddly enough, she'd gotten used to the idea of Eliot being her dad pretty fast, but the whole 'different world' thing, and her mom not being around didn't seem quite real. Waking up tomorrow would probably be weird.

"Okay," she said, smiling up at him. "Will you tell me a story?" she asked.

"I'm not sure how good a story I can tell you, but I'll try." Eliot offered a small smile. Okay, this was the awkward part. He really didn't know what kind of story to tell her. All the stories he knew probably weren't the best sort of story to tell a little girl.

Riley smiled, seeing her dad was a little out of his element and decided to help. "There should be a princess. And a unicorn." Princesses rode unicorns instead of horses. "And maybe a witch or a dragon." She watched him, hoping that would help.

"Once upon a time.." She started for him.

"Once upon a time," Eliot echoed, and picked up the story from there. He wasn't a natural story teller as such, but he tried not to worry about it. He just kept talking, making up a crazy story about a unicorn riding princess and her pet dragon, that the witch wanted to take for her own.

Riley smiled, enjoying the story. It wasn't like the ones in books, but it was pretty good anyway. After a few minutes, Riley's eyes started to close and she drifted off to sleep on her dad's shoulder.

She stepped outside with Sam and Nate, pulling the door closed behind them. Once back in the hall she was a bit more open with her affection, sliding both her arms around Nate's waist as she looked up at him with a light smile.

"You don't look like you're comprehending all of this, love. How can I help?"

Sam, it seemed, was deemed capable of suffering through PDAs.

Sam didn't have any problem with the affection. If he hadn't been trying his best to get the two of them together, he might have been more squeamish, but he was actually relieved to see Sophie there and comforting his dad.

"Oh, Sophie, I brought you that brownie sundae. It's probably half-melted, but the brownie's still good."

Sam leaned against the door, his back to the room. He was doing a pretty good job of acting like he wasn't eavesdropping.

Nate shook his head, the way someone shakes off a vision or a dream. He shifted, bumping his hip against Sophie's hip. His eyes went to the sundae in Sam's hand when he mentioned it, but he was only vaguely aware of it.

"It's a lot to take in. You're here. That's really all I need. Both of you." Nate closed his eyes briefly. He wished he'd brought the coffee with him so he'd have something to occupy his hands. He was all too aware of the trembling.

"Oh, the melted ice cream just makes the brownie better... I'll get it in just a moment, doll... "

She smiled at Sam, and then tightened her hold around Nate, pulling him into a hug and holding him close for a moment or two, before pulling away with a smile.

"You'll be fine. Look on the bright side, love. Eventually, things have to make some sort of sense... Let's go find a seat, shall we?"

Releasing one of her arms she reached to muss Sam's hair a bit, then took the ex-sundae from him. "I've been looking forward to this."

Sam handed over the sundae, smiling. Then a hint of a frown pulled at his lips, a slight furrow creasing his brow. He shook his head slightly when she mentioned taking a seat. "You two go on, I'll be right there."

So much for pretending not to eavesdrop.

Nate gave Sam a Look, but he didn't call his son out on the eavesdropping. he just shook his head then focused his attention on Sophie. "I think that's a good idea." He found a small smile for her, and shifted his weight to start walking back toward the waiting room. He knew he didn't have to say anything more to Sam.

"I'm glad you're here." He spoke softly, as he led Sophie away from Eliot's room. "I feel like I'm drifting, but you're the anchor."

She hid a grin as Sam decided to stay and listen, but said nothing on it, moving instead with Nate to the waiting room and taking a seat on one of the sofas there, tugging his arm until he sat as well, like it or not.

"I'm not so sure I'm good anchor material, Nate, but I'm happy to be here.. for you, and for them. I suppose they're your family for real now, but I care for them, too. Now..." She smiled and took both his hands in hers, curling his fingers in. "You can do this, and you will come out of it all successfully. I know you, and I know you're thinking what-ifs... and I want you to stop. Be in the present, not the past, alright?:

Nate nodded. he found a small smile, that was both comforted and grateful. "In the present. This is me, in the present." He leaned against her. "I'm sleepy. Been a long couple of days." Ever since he'd told Eliot he was his father, he hadn't slept much, and he'd spent most of his wwaking hours worrying and fretting and pacing.

"I know Eliot will come around. And if he doesn't..." Nate scrubbed a hand over his face. "I'll deal with that, too."
