Who: Rahne and Anakin
What: Talking about Stuff.
Where: X-Factor
Warnings: Who knows.

The point of meditation was generally to calm the sort of worry that Anakin sometimes had about Rahne. This time, it wasn't taking. Which was troublesome.

Rahne had been acting weird for the past few days, ever since that guy had arrived. Her old boyfriend. He could understand why, of course, but that didn't change the fact that he was worried about her. Anakin wondered how to bring it up.

There he was, breaking his own concentration again. Anakin gave up and started playing with a gizmo on his workbench, before he gave up on that too. "I guess I just need to talk to her," he said to himself. "What do I say? I've never had a girlfriend whose dead ex-boyfriend came back to life. Of course, I've only had the two."

"It's new f'me, too," came a soft voice from the doorway. She knew she'd been awkward lately. It had been hard for her to talk to Doug. Even to say such a simple thing had taken days. She should have felt better, like a weight had been lifted from her shoulders, but she didn't. Doug had looked so disappointed. He'd said it was fine, but Rahne felt guilty. The boy had died for her, and when he came back, she was with another guy. It was awful.

She'd been acting strange around Anakin, too. She wasn't sure what to think. Maybe she felt guilty for being happy, and was trying to sabotage it. Mostly, she just didn't know how to talk about it.

"You sneaked up on me." That didn't happen often. It was nearly unprecedented. Maybe he really was out of it. Or more likely he was just so used to her presence that she could sneak up on him. He liked that explanation better, even if he did think it was probably closer to the former.

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to... talk to myself behind your back." Anakin blushed and looked away. He would have to make a note to shut his door when he talked to himself in the future. Or just not talk to himself, that would probably solve the problem too. "Um. Come in."

"It's okay," she said, stepping inside. She was a little quiet and more serious, than usually. She was still confused, but she wanted to be around Anakin. She missed him.

"I'm sorry I've been weird."

"You're perfectly justified in being weird. It's not something that happens all the time." As was the gist of my rant to myself, he thought. "I've missed you, but I don't want you to think that I don't understand why you would think this kind of thing is weird."

Anakin wasn't sure if he was supposed to hug her, but he did it anyway. It seemed important that he do so. "How are you feeling?" he asked.

Rahne nodded a little, stepping closer. "I missed ye too.. And I'm glad ye understand." She gave him a small smile.

She relaxed into the hug, leaning against him a little. She exhaled softly, closing her eyes. "Tired," she answered. "Sad. Tired of being sad." She tilted her head up slightly to look at him.

Anakin did understand. Maybe a little better than Rahne would have expected. He dreaded what it might have been like if Tahiri were to show up, and he felt horrible about it. She was... had been... his best friend, and the fact that he didn't want to see her because of how difficult it was made him feel a little sick sometimes. And Tahiri had never died for him. He could only imagine how complicated it was for Rahne.

Anakin hugged Rahne a little tighter before letting go. "Why don't you sit down? Come on." He cleared the couch of a half-finished machine of questionable use.

Rahne nodded a little, sinking down onto the couch. She drew her knees up, curling them underneath her. "Maybe I need t'try that Jedi meditation of yuirs," she said, giving him a small smile.

She scooted a little closer. "I dinna know wh.. I talked t'Doug. I think he understands." The whole thing was just hard.

"That's good. Well, as easy as it is to understand anything here." Every time someone else he knew was dead appeared, Anakin was reminded of the feeling he had when he first got there, that he'd made it to the afterlife. And now that Rahne had effectively had to deal with one dead person in order to date another, that only made things more complicated. "I'm sorry, Rahne."

He sat down next to her and put his arm around her. "Things are weird, lately. I'm sorry I haven't been around much either. Jacen's being a kreetle lately, Jaina's still down... remember when all we had to worry about was the end of the world? Whatever happened to those days? Things were simpler then."

"It isnae yuir fault," she said when he apologized. No one could have expected this. And things with Doug had been so long ago. She didn't even have feelings for him anymore, not really. It was more difficult to see how much he still cared for her, and how she couldn't return those feelings.

She shifted her weight against him, nuzzling into his chest. "Aye," she said, smiling a little. "I'd prefer another Apocalypse t'all this." She gave a little 'pfft'. "Is Jaina doing any better?" she asked. "Anything I can do t'help?"

Anakin shook his head. "I don't know. I think that the funeral... it didn't really help, as such, but it gave her some closure, so that's a little bit better. Mostly I've been trying to get her not to think about it, which might work for, oh, ten minutes at a time." Which was more or less his plan for helping Rahne. He had to get better plans.

Rahne nodded, nuzzling Anakin's neck. She blushed a little, pressing her face into his shoulder. "It takes time, I guess. It's good yuir there f'her." She bit down lightly on her lower lip, scooting closer to him. It was nice to be alone with Anakin. It got her mind off of other things.

"I hope so. Being there for you is important too, though." Anakin toyed with her hair a bit, in an absent way. Generally when they were together things were complicated; the world was ending, they were naked and running, it was a funeral, they had to work. It was nice to have some normal downtime. It had been a while.

"We should do... something. To keep our minds of Donnie and Doug. I don't think we're welcome at that Italian restaurant anymore, though." He blushed thinking about it. Rahne had a really cute butt.

Rahne smiled, giving a soft "Mmm," as he played with her hair. She loved when people played with her hair.. Well, mostly when Anakin did. It would be a bit weird if anyone else did. Her eyes closed and she leaned a little heavier against him.

"We could stay here," she murmured, her voice sounding lower and more relaxed than usual. Here was nice. Nobody could kick them out of Anakin's room.

"Here is good. I like here." Anakin waved his hand at the door, which shut itself. It effectively sent the signal "go fix your own damn computer and/or sniff out your own clues with your own nose" to anyone who decided to come looking for either of them. Which, admittedly, didn't happen that often after hours, but there was always a chance.

Anakin struggled for something to say that somehow made everything all right, but nothing came. He wasn't good with words. He was good with action, but there wasn't anything he could do to fix everything either. It was frustrating on a level he couldn't articulate.

Things happened, right? People broke up all the time, and granted not many of them came back after death, but people got over breakups. Telling herself that made things a little easier. Doug would be all right. She and Doug hadn't been that serious, anyway.. Well. Serious enough for him to take a bullet for her. She winced a little. Back to square one.

She shifted a little and lay down on the couch so that her head was on Anakin's lap, staring at the floor in front of them. "Anakin?"

Anakin almost spoke a few times as he messed with Rahne's hair. He almost asked about work (which would be pointless, since they worked together), almost asked about how her friend Guido was adjusting (which would only have brought them back to people from her own universe), almost asked about sports (which would really mean that he was an idiot, and he didn't know anything about Earther sports anyway.)

And then she spoke. "Yeah, Rahne?" Oh, good, she could talk. Then he wouldn't have to, because maybe she had come up with the ideal thing to say to make everything better. It was about time, he thought.

"I.." This was really something she should have eye contact with him to say. She rolled onto her back to look up at him, but that didn't feel right, either. She sat up, blushing by now as she turned to look at him. "I.. I care f'ye. A lot. And I.. I'm not going anywhere." All of her boyfriends could come back at once and show up at her door to shower her with flowers and presents and she would still stay with Anakin. "I'm happy.. Being with ye."

And, because he wasn't looking at her like she'd turned into a plant monster and started trying to liquefy his brains.. "I love ye."

"You love me?" Anakin said this a bit more incredulously than he'd meant to. "You love me. You love me. I've been trying to figure out how to tell you how I feel, or even if I should tell you, because we've been together for a few months and I wasn't sure if that was a long time or a short time around here, and I didn't really have anyone to ask what with Jaina losing Donnie and Jacen probably said it on his first date..."

The fact that he'd just gotten good news after what seemed like an eternity of bad news had made him a little giddy. Anakin took a deep breath and calmed down, but a smile remained on his face. "I love you. Is the thing."

Relief washed over her and she broke into a big grin. She didn't realize until he said it that she'd been holding her breath. She giggled, lifting her hands to touch his face. "I love ye," she said again, laughing. She leaned in, kissing him.

There had been so much worry and stress and too much talk of death. Funerals and dead boyfriends. It was just nice to have something life-affirming and real. She shifted closer, one of her legs draping over his lap.

Anakin probably should have felt more guilty than he did about being so happy when somewhere his sister wasn't. But he felt fine. For the first time in a long while, actually. Not just because Rahne's lips were on his, but that did have something to do with it. And not just because she was in love with him and he with her, although that was something he was still jumping for joy over.

Mostly, it was the fact that she was... she was there for him, and he could be there for her. Because despite their numerous issues, they had found each other and were a little bit less... disturbed for their trouble. And because she had really good breath.
