WHO: Sereda and Zevran
WHAT: Either working stuff out or major angst or both. Haven't decided.
WHERE: Sereda and Alistair's flat, London
WARNINGS: Not sure, will update if need be.

After she and Alistair had raided and sold the New York flat the other day, Sereda had found herself with decent clothes (too many skirts, though) and a little bit of actual furniture. They'd salvaged a proper bed and two chairs from that flowered nightmare (hideous knitted flowers everywhere!), and were in the process of getting a bit of cash from selling it all.

The very first thing Sereda had invested in was what the shopgirl had called a "punching bag." It was therapeutic, to say the least. She was giving the heavy thing a royal workout when a knock at the door sounded.

He'd done her the favor of knocking instead of letting himself in, leaning against the door frame. He was wearing leather pants and a white button-down shirt, blond hair loose and windblown.

She could be royal still. "Didn't expect to see you here." Still, his visit wasn't unwelcome, and she stepped back to allow him entry. "What brings you by?" She had a fairly damned good idea why he'd chosen to come now - Alistair was at work.

"I didn't want you to be upset. I didn't want Alistair to come yell at me later. I wanted to see you." Zevran shrugged and moved inside, smirking a little at the chair. "You poor thing."

"Me upset? And please, Alistair's wonderful, but if he yelled at you I'd yell at him. He's a right to his own friends, and I to mine." She understood very well that men, especially tall men, wished to protect her, but well. One didn't sodding live to majority in Orzammar by needing protection.

She raised an eyebrow at his smirk. "Why poor thing?"

"YOu seem to think that I am upset by you being with Alistair. I assure you that you are mistaken." He pointed to the chair, then flopped down onto it. "I didn't think this was your style."

She chuckled about the chair first. "It's the least hideous of what was there." Still, things weren't quite right. "Then why else would you be so apathetic? Have I wronged you in some o - some way?" She'd been about to say some other way, but damned if being with Alistair was wrong.

"I didn't know - yes, all right, I care about you, and I would have preferred you choose me to him, but you didn't. And that's fine. You cannot control who you love. I merely didn't want to burden the two of you." He was actually telling the truth.

She hadn't expected said truth, and blinked. "How refreshing, to get right to the point." She stepped away from the punching bag, flopping in the chair nearest to his. "You only burden me if you stay away and appear to be sulking like a mabari pup without a bone." Sereda shrugged. "You're a good friend."

Zev shook his head. "It was not my intention to appear as if I was sulking. I simply didn't want to interfere. You two are still fledglings in your romance, yes? Alistair, for whatever reason, sees me as a threat, though I can assure you, I am not one to impose my will upon a lady if she does not want me. I have not had a friend in ... some time. It will be interesting."

"I trust you." Sereda said simply. She liked him, found him funny, attractive, and surprisingly true, for an assassin. She just wasn't in love with him.

That Alistair found him a threat, however. "And I will speak to Alistair, rest assured."

"I am glad." He nodded a little to himself, then chuckled and shook his head, smiling to himself. "It is only because he worries about his lack of experience. Be gentle with him."

Sereda had to smile, looking down. "I wouldn't get angry with him, but even if he doesn't trust you, he really ought to trust me." It did grate on her somewhat that he didn't seem to give her that much credit. Did he think she'd up and leave because he thought himself unworthy of her, or some such nonsense?

"I think it is because you are the first woman he has ever cared for. If you think of the first thing you had that was worth losing, I bet you guarded it more closely than things that were not worthwhile." He crossed his legs and tucked some hair behind his ears. "I do not blame him."

Ancestors, she'd almost forgotten. Sereda rose, padding into the kitchen, where she picked up a long, thin box and handed it to Zevran. "Apparently we're to give gifts on this world's holiday, and I do enjoy buying things." She'd gotten Zevran a bottle of wine that seemed to smell at least a bit like the Antivan equivalent.

That done, however, she sat back down and considered his words. "Nonetheless, though, Alistair should not see you as a threat. To do so insults me - and you, if you were entirely truthful with me beforehand." She didn't want to call him a liar, and she hoped he'd been telling the truth. It would get so much more awkward if he'd been fibbing.

"We are? I was not told! I have nothing for you!" He blinked and opened the box, chuckling a little. "Thank you very much. I know who I wish to share this with."

He shook his head. "He does not mean it as an insult to you, he means it as an insult to him. It is his worth he doubts, not you. He does not believe that you could possibly choose him." Zevran knew this from experience - he'd been that way with Rinna. "I will not admit that I am disappointed. But I will not press the issue. I have honor. Not much. But I do possess a bit."

"It is nothing, really, don't feel you need to give me things." The sale of the New York rooms had left her with a nice bit of money, though she'd still likely have to work at something to keep her and Alistair in hot pockets.

She smiled at him genuinely, if a trifle awkwardly, when he said he wouldn't press the issue. "And for what it's worth, I'm very grateful. And flattered." Someone caring for you was always flattering, even if the attention couldn't be reciprocated.

"Still, it is impolite. Perhaps another day." He shrugged a little and didn't bring up the issue of her gratitude - best to move on past the topic completely. "Did you know there is a guild here? I am already accepted. It is a comfortable Hall, as well, much less strict than the Crows."

She followed his lead, grateful for the subject change. "I did not have any idea there was a guild. I do hope I can ask you -as a friend- not to take any more contracts on me or Alistair, however." She hoped he would smile, and not laugh awkwardly.

"Truly strange and more than a bit uncomfortable." Sereda fidgeted. "I still find myself ready to spring when I don't really need to be." Rising, she shrugged, needing to not be sitting in one place. "I've been trying to think of some line of work where my reflexes and abilities might be handy."

"I do not know; I know it was a woman with horrible taste in clothing and furniture. However, I do not know what she did as a profession." Sereda shuddered visibly. "Terrifying colours not found in the Deep Roads, never mind in a reputable shop."

"I think we had similar situations, I replaced a man who only owned suits." Zevran wrinkled his nose. "One is all right, and I'm told they're useful, but they're uncomfortable."
