Who: Kar and any New Yorker interested. AKA open.
When: This afternoon.
Where: Inside a cafe.
Warnings: Uh, no. XD.

After her usual morning visit to see Landon and check his vitals when the doctors weren't there to tell her not to sress out over them (pah), Karen drug her laptop to a cafe and got coffee before setting the computer up and popping in a jump drive, opening two files, an ultrasound she and House had taken of Landon's heart the day before, as well as the EKG his doctors had done. She slowed the ultrasound, carefully examining it, not seeing anything resembling a heart murmur, as Landon's doctors had freaked her out over. It was a relief. She knew it wasn't set in stone confirmation, but it was damn close. Good enough for her for now. Murmurs could be dealt with, especially if he was older, it would be a lot easier than now, in his infancy, while he was still behind in growth. Even tho he was catching up splendidly.

She let the ultrasound continue, watching his heart pump, sipping her coffee thoughtfully. Drinking with House had been sorely regretted as soon as later in the evening, and her head was still a little pained, but the coffee kept her mind off that. The EKG ended first, so she closed it, and the ultrasound ended but she left it up as she opened her planner and made a note to burn the ultrasound onto a disk to give to Landon's doctors.

Lunch time and Alex goes for a walk. She's gotten back from her weekend trip with Thomas, is well-rested and ready for a non-seafood meal. Thus, she's in this little cafe and spots a familiar face.

"Hello, Karen," she greets the woman politely with a warm smile.

Karen glances up and smiles brightly. "Alex, hi! Oh gosh, here," she moves the computer, sticking it in it's case. "Please, have a seat! How are you?"

Still smiling, she responds, "Don't rearrange on my account." She takes a seat at the table. "I'm good. Rested. You?"

"Oh, it isn't any problem." She laughed softly, rubbing at her eyelids. "All right, relieved. Not so well rested, but not too bad. How was your trip?"

"My trip was very nice. Rest, relaxation and shopping." She pauses long enough to order a salad and some tea for lunch. "How's the baby?" She's not sure she remembers the baby's name, she's been a little preoccupied for the last few days.

"I'm glad to hear it." While Alex orders she double checks to make sure no one has called, responding with a smile and several nods at first. "He's hanging in there, getting stronger every day, neagative on heart and lung defects. We're hoping to take him home by the end of the week."

"That's good. I'm glad he's okay." She folds her hands on the table. "And how are you? I'm pretty sure getting - what was it - trapped under rubble in a parking garage? can't be good for you." Alex is still playing 'catch up' on everything that happened during 'Apocalypse week'.

"Oh." She laughed softly. "I'm ok, doing well. I got out of the building, actually, and then. . something fell and hit me on the head, I was in a coma for about two weeks. But I'm good."

"Yeah, it's fine.A bad pun is good every so often." She smiled and shrugged. "I'm ok, and Landon, he'll be fine, so. I don't know, I really cant complain I guess. What have you been up to? Anything terribly exciting?"

Alex nods.

"Nothing exciting. Just work and my little trip."

And now she's thinking her life needs a little more spice, only without the danger parts.

Karen nods, taking a sip of her coffee. "Yeah, I'm hoping mine gets just a little less exciting soon." She chuckled a little. "So, what do you do? for work I mean, I don't think I ever asked."

Alex's lunch arrives with a 'clank' on the table - how does a salad 'clank'? It's lettuce. She rolls her eyes a little at the waitperson and locates her fork. "I'm an Assistant District Attorney with Manhattan SVU."

"I'm a lawyer and my job is interesting? Haven't heard that before."

A light shrug. "Yeah, it's stressful sometimes. But most jobs are from time to time."

"I guess it's just 'cause I don't know any lawyers?"

She nodded, smiling a little sheepishly. "Sorry, I'm absolutely terrible at making conversation, it's not my best quality."

"Don't worry about it. Not everyone's a wordsmith."

She takes a bite of her salad - mixed greens, cheese, grilled chicken, dressing on the side. "I know a lot of lawyers. Lot of doctors too. I know a lot of everybody."

Karen nodded. "I know mostly doctors myself. A couple magicians. It's good to mix it up, I find everyone has some interesting story to tell and I'm a sucker to listening to them." she laughed softly. "That's why Caleb and I ended up together I guess."

"Guess I should've said I 'knew' mostly lawyers. Now I know doctors, intelligence agents, a couple dancers and half-a-dozen guys who look like Gregory House. That's pretty diverse, I think," she replies with a smile.

She chuckled at the last bit, pausing thoughtfully. "God, I know. . .half as many as you, then, but I work for both Houses, and Ray's a good friend. I've seen the others around, never really talked to them tho." She laughed. "Funny, how popular of a face that is. Then again I think the count on mine right now is. . .four. And there's four that look like Caleb, that I know of. I guess creativity has become overrated."

"That or the universe has a really fucked up sense of humor. I've noticed a couple folks who look a bit like Peter too. Of course, that creeps me out anyway since at one point I was brainwashed into thinking I was married to a man who looked like Peter - only less flamboyant."

She knows that's going to spark some questions, funny looks and need for explanation, but isn't that the point?

She may or may not have been immediately aware of the man behind her, watching the video on her computer. After a moment, he dropped into the seat next to her, and pulled the chair across from him closer to prop his feet up on.

"I need coffee." He eyed Karen's cup hopefully, but didn't reach for it. Instead he leaned in and kissed her cheek. "Sorry I'm late. Houdini got out the door and I had to chase the little beast down."

She hadn't been aware, and nearly jumped a mile in the air when he sat, sighing in relief to see him. "Jeez, hello to you too."

She knew that look so she shoved her cup towards him as she worked on something before closing the computer. "Go on, I'm getting around to drinking coffee the way you do now." She really didn't mind sharing it, she didn't need to have too much caffeine in her system. "I don't blame him for wanting to get some air. And you could use some exercise." She joked, nudging his ankle playfully.

"Hey now." He patted his stomach. "No need to get mean." He was smiling, to show he wasn't really taking her seriously. He leaned forward and claimed her coffee, taking a sip and letting it slide down his throat.

She laughed a little and shook her head, waited for him to finish his sip before taking the cup to take a drink as well. "So I looked at the ultrasound House and I took, and contrary to what those. . ." She took a deep breath to avoid using a profanity. "..doctors say, I don't see any evidence of a heart murmur."

"When we did it he looked, he doesn't do much in cardiology so he's no specialist, I have some background in pediatric and neonatal cardiology, so, I know enough. I'm still not his doctor tho." She sighed, sitting back. "I just. . can't wait to get the all clear and get him home, he's so close."
