Who: Multi-thread, OTMany (pups who have dealings with the Third Race and/or magic; humans need escorts or might get enchanted)
What: The White Witch's Yule Ball
When: Solstice Night
Where: The Great Hall

Winter nights always held the best stories told by fires built to keep the chill and the dark howl outside. Extraordindary fairytales, boogeymen, battles and tales from long long ago would be dusted off to entertain or keep children in line. And the winter solstice was the pinnacle of all the smoky magic and shadowed whispers.

It was that night that the courts of Fey, Elf and the Others that Mankind had imagined or stumbled upon would gather to celebrate their subtle regime of power and have a fete of the stuff dreams were made of. This year the frigid White Witch held the feast in her spacious ice cavern-hall, a masquerade of sorts. Tables lined the edges with elegant delicacies and drink of the Third Kind and crystal everywhere reflected the flickering candles held in silver candelabra embedded in the frozen translucent walls. The chatter and laughter of the people in elegant costumes and ornate masks of every style imaginable, mixed with the silvery tunes of the unworldy orchestra, eating, gossiping or dancing.

Lirael, not quite trusting Jareth to be courteous enough to summon her when he said he would, was prepared for the feast well ahead of time. Shedding her usual purple tunic, she wore a long silken gown. The material was a deep, deep blue, dark as the midnight sky with tiny stars strewn across it. She wore her hair back and had been more thorough with her makeup than she normally bothered to be.

With a bit of apprehension, she'd chosen to leave her bells behind, instead wearing the Remembrancers' pipes on a thin silver belt around her waist. Truly, the only symbol of the Abhorsen she wore tonight was a small golden key on the belt.

She waited for the telltale 'pull' that signaled her arrival in the other realm.

The shift from one world to the next was smooth and instantaneous as Lirael was transported. She appeared in the entry hall, the loud din of music and party goers luring.

"Now Precious, did you really think I would go back on my word?" Jareth stepped forward into her field of vision, wrapped in a strange cloak of twilight sky that seems to vanish like dark mist at the hem. His hair was its usual spiky ragged self, like a lion mane, as he swept his covering out of the way. His colors matched hers, but where she had a clean elegance to her palate, dark blue was augmented with purples and roses, and the fabric looked as if magpies had beaded it.

He took her hand and kissed it with the grace of a courtier. "You look splendid, Lirael, I am flattered by the care you took and shall enjoy being your escort this eve'n."

A wry smile tugged at the corner of her lips as she took Jareth's hand. "I didn't doubt your word," she said. "I only thought you might forget to wait until I was dressed, again." After all, time was a little unorthodox when Jareth was involved.

She curtsied to him, flicking her gaze down demurely as he complimented her. "Thank you, my lord. I'm honored."

"What?" He raised an eyebrow in incredulity and recoiled to his proper height. "And become predictable? Never."

His smiled grew crooked when he recognized the delicate flutes adorning her. "It seems you chose to be cautious as well as stunning. I do hope you do not end up testing their mettle tonight."

He spun to stand beside her and offered his arm and hand, palm down. "Shall we depart the shadows like two trysting teenagers, be announced and see what fun can be had?"

"One can hope," he agreed with an amused smirk and took position for another dance as the strings started up once more. His tone was amused and teasing as he eyed her. "If things get dull, perhaps you will liberate more lost souls from others here."

Lirael raised an eyebrow. "Lost souls?" she asked, glancing around. If Jareth was alluding to his statues, she did not care much for the sound of that. "Your Grace, surely you'd not want me to draw that sort of attention to myself. I doubt the other guests will be as forgiving as my lord was."

This dance seemed to have a quicker pace than the last, and Lirael seemed a bit harder-pressed to keep up.

He caught her slight frown at having to keep up with the new tempo and slightly slid into a less flourishing style, leaving flounce for surer stepping.

He chuckled as they slid along the promenade. "I am your lord now, hmm?" he teased quietly to her, nodding to their joining partners in the dance. "I am pretty certain what I want and what you do do not seamlessly coincide."

Lirael was grateful the dance required Jareth to hold her as it did, for all the spinning and movements had her a bit dizzy. All of the things she could do--traveling through Death and casting magic, not to mention her moderate skill with a sword--and a little dancing threw her off her balance. In battle, she would have had something to keep her focus on; the movements weren't seemingly random. She shifted her focus to Jareth, meeting his eyes.

"I am dancing with you, aren't I?" Clearly her actions sometimes fit his desires. "Didn't you tell me once that you wanted for nothing?" She was glad to hear that wasn't so. That would be dreadfully boring. There were certain things she wanted him to want. "As a king, other titles are probably more befitting than 'lord'," she mused. She had called the White Queen 'Her Majesty', which was the appropriate title for high royalty. She usually called Jareth 'your grace' or 'my lord,' both of which were more suited to lower nobles. "Does it bother you?" she asked. "That I bowed lower to our host than I do to you?"

Dream entered the ball, dressed in his best finery, back stiff and head high as he often was in formal situations. On his pale arm was a beautiful young human girl. Even the gossip mills went silent when they saw him. It had been centuries since Dream of the Endless had deigned to grace a yule ball with his presence. Whether it was the princess' soul inside the girl, or the fear and respect of Morpheus, the scorn that had been directed at Jareth and his human escort was absent here.

Dream did not 'mingle' with the other guests. People tended to gravitate away from him as he walked his date into the crowd.

Candy shone in a dress of seafoam green and blue. She wore flats because she hated heels, and had never been good at them. She was standing close to Dream, if only because she didn't know the proper protocol for a ball.

Ironically, she was completely comfortable with Dream. When others shied away from him, she shook her head and smiled sadly. It was their loss. Dream was a wonderful person to know, and she was lucky to have his time.

Dream kept Candy at his arm, leading her toward the White Witch's throne. As their host for the evening, she deserved some level of respect and acknowledgment. He gave her a polite, stiff bow, then glanced over to Candy.

Queen Jadis.

The host gave them both a nod. Her arrogance extended even to Dream, but he had little interest in conversing with her. Once the greeting had finished, Dream steered Candy away, and back to the crowd. He circled around to the chairs, seeing a familiar face and giving him a solemn nod.

King Jareth.

Boa took over for Candy for a moment, stepping forward and delivering a proper, deep curtsey to the Queen, as well as the king in turn. Her voice was deeper and more clipped when she spoke next. "Your Highnesses."

She turned back to Dream, fully Candy again, smiling. "Sorry. I know that my othersoul alarms some people."

He pondered that, staying still for her touch and giving her the feeling of power. He was not in a mood to snap the rug out from under her feet, there was no fun in that.

"Hmmmm, very well, I seem to be able to furnish such a steep demand." He smirked and stood up before bowing steeply to her.

Lirael smirked, standing up when he did. She gave him a little curtsy, adding a Jareth-esque hand flourish as she did. She grinned, obviously amused with the whole proceeding.

She was a bit unsure as to whether or not Jareth intended to dance now and save the kiss for later, or put on a show for the other guests. He did have a way of keeping her on her toes.

Nope, she didn't specify place or who would initiate. Ahh how fun this would be.

The two strolled back onto the floor, a little more bounce in their step as they took their places for the next song. The silvery strings came up with a litling tune, just as elegant as all their previous tunes, but this one had more tight spins and loops. Jareth lead firmly and gently, careful to not let Lirael lose face neither baby her.

The borrowed confidence served Lirael well, making up somewhat for her lack of instruction in dance. She followed Jareth's lead quite well, trusting his stregth and grace. It was a very different experience from the earlier waltz, and made her understand why people say dancing often leads to...other things.

"Tell me, your highness. I am by no means an expert on this place and time, but the behavior I have seen in movies and television.. I cannot believe all of these modern young women would ask for something as innocent as a kiss, or as chaste as the alabaster lady's wish to be in your presence forever." Lirael considered herself 'old-fashioned' in many ways, but the thoughts had crossed even her mind. And Jareth certainly seemed equipped for such a request. "What happens to those women who are more bold with their wish?"

He was standing with his eyes lidded, gauging the effects on him and on the milling Others. Some had quickly taken up the charm, few looked alarmed at their predicament. The musicians' fingers warped to the the bell's charm and played with the alien tones.

He looked to Lirael, expression mixed in the glee of the moment and the fight to still himself. "Now this is much more lively, wouldn't you agree?"

Lirael smiled brightly. "And you handle it quite nicely," she told her old friend before turning back to Jareth. "Much more, yes."

She watched Jareth, looking a bit mischevious. "I suppose you'd think having a dance now would be admitting weakness, hm?"

Lirael fell into Jareth's arms, but his graceful turn masked the stumble. It made her feel more competent, even though it was entirely the goblin king's expertise that had saved face. She was a bit out of breath. "Milord," she said, her greeting a bit delayed. "How lovely to run into you again."

"Jareth," the prince said, the haughty air in his tone indicating that there was no need for him to address the goblin king with any formalities. "Don't tell me you're already acquainted with this girl!" he said, faux surprise in his voice. "Oh, was this your date?"

"Very well." He nodded and bowed to DD in farewell before shrugging his long midnight cloak to his shoulders. He threw the cloak's edge around her too, transporting the two in a tumbling feeling, surrounded by feathers. The light came back as he drew the cloak away to reveal her place around them.

"There, safe and sound." And without further ado, he tipped her chin up and dipped to kiss her. It was soft and non-aggressive, taking care with what she had said earlier. She smelt of moonflowers, which amused him a bit.

She'd barely had time to process the fact that their surroundings had changed when he kissed her. She felt her skin go warm with the sudden rush as she leaned up, kissing him back. It was not her First Kiss, but it certainly felt like it, seeming like all of her neurons were firing at once in a nonsensical, fireworks-like display of electricity inside her brain. Everything else seemed to fade away.

She wasn't quite sure what to do with her hands. She wanted to hold on; to keep him from pulling away and ending the kiss. After all, it was possible this would be the only kiss she would steal from the Goblin King. She wasn't likely to prize another wish from him. Still, it didn't seem right to cling to him.

She didn't tense or flinch from the action, and instead seemed to advance as much as her manners would allow. It pleased him she did not act like a shrinking violet, and was satisfied she had come back out of the uncertain shell she wore before. He prolonged the kiss as long as was proper, parting with a brush of lips and then retreating back enough to smile.

"Was that satisfactory, milady?" He was nearly purred the words, more from amusement than swagger.
