Who: Tachikoma and Walt Diego
What: Hanging out in New Orleans.
Warnings: Nope!

Landing out of a portkey whilst on roller skates was a dangerous idea unless someone had had a lot of practice. Luckily, Tachikoma was one of the few experts in the art. "Don't try this at home!" she warned a small boy that was spared due to Tach's sharp turns and quick maneuvers on her wheels.

She'd never been to New Orleans. Even with the cold weather there were a lot of people, tourists and natives alike. It had a much different feeling than New York or London. It was exciting. She slowed to a halt, looking for blue carnations.

He laughed at the first one, "Just testing!" He said, and he did actually duck into the nearest shop when she started counting again, mostly because it was a good place to hide, and also because it was a good place to get some pralines while he was at it.

He kept an eye on her, just so she didn't get too far ahead in her search.

Tach tilted her head, glancing around the immediate area. She didn't see him. He couldn't have gone too far, though. She skated up the sidewalk a bit, poking her head into an alley to check there. Nope, though there were some pigeons. Walt couldn't turn into a pigeon, not that she knew of, at least.

She scanned the crowd again, then spun around to check behind a mailbox. Nope. He wasn't crouched between the newspaper boxes, either. She peeked behind vendors and glanced through a few windows of shops. She glanced up to see if maybe he'd scaled the wall. Tachikoma was very determined. After a bit, she started poking her head inside stores to search them more thoroughly.

He smiled, watching this search from the front window of the confectioner's shop, shaking his head and staying still, just leaning against the wall beside the window, gaze drifting over the people inside for a moment before blinking up as the door chimed when Tachikoma peered in, he stayed still, curious now to see if she'd spot him again now that he wasn't where she expected him to be.

Tach searched the room, scanning for Walt's face. She walked in, peering between the aisles and behind displays, ruling out all the hiding spots. Crossing the shop off her mental list, she rolled back to the exit. She skated past the window, then stopped and turned around.

She skated back into the shop with purpose. She went to the counter and bought a candy bar before returning to her search.

Walt grinned at the return trip, shaking his head and pocketing his pralines before following her out again, he kept an eye on her, just to make sure she wasn't getting lost, and stuck to clusters of people in the meanwhile, looking at displays, waiting at the crosswalk, reading a flier for a local calypso band.

Fueled by chocolatey goodness, Tachikoma quested on tirelessly, expanding her search radius. She was always careful to check out any large item someone could duck behind or crevice they could slide into. Her frequent glances upward indicated she expected him to be part spidermonkey.

She was incredibly dedicated, pursuing her goal with all the seriousness of a mission. She should've brought Puppy, she realized.

All of which was just fine with Walt, still tailing along behind, sometimes he actually was where she was looking, more or less, but never quite spot on.

Really it was just as much an exercise in being unnoticed for him as it was her mission to find him.

After another ten minutes of walking and searching, she realized that she'd gone too far. She doubled back and crossed the street, hoping the new perspective might give her some insight. She continued her thorough search, occasionally peeking to the other side of the street in case she'd missed him over there.

She peeked in more stores and eventually got back to their starting point. She paused there for a moment before continuing, in case he'd gone this way. Side streets were a possibility, she supposed. She started down one of those, finding smaller shops and more greenery, but still no Walt.

Walt really was amused by the whole thing, especially her apparent belief that he could somehow climb buildings, he shook his head, chuckling to himself as he followed down one of the side streets.

It was about an hour after they'd started, and the sun had finally dipped below the horizon and the lights were coming on, making everything really sparkle, Walt tapped her on the shoulder, smiling, "So, you give up yet?"

"There you are!" she said brightly, turning around and placing her hands on his shoulders. "I didn't give up! I was gonna go get a flashlight." She grinned.

At least she'd gotten a good tour of the area in her little walkabout. "Next time I'm gonna put a chip on you," she said with a giggle.

"You know, I don't think anybody's tried that method yet." He said, after pondering for a moment. He smiled, taking her arm again and heading back towards the main thoroughfare, "All the fairylights are coming on, so now it's both sparkly and historical."

"I offered to chip my friend Ellie, but he didn't like the idea." She rolled along at a slow easy pace, matching Walt's pace.

"It is," she said, smiling and looking up at the lamp posts twinkling. "It's pretty. I like this town." She swung his hand back and forth as they traveled down the sidewalk. "Hey, aren't there ghosts here?"

He shrugged, "There's ghosts everywhere, historical places like this just have more of them than newer places just because they've been around longer to collect them." A shrug, "Like dust, y'know?"

"Can we see them?" In her world, 'ghost' meant something different, but she'd seen more than enough horror movies to understand the common definition here. "That would be fun. Doesn't that sound fun?" She skated an excited twirl, still holding onto Walt's hand like a dancer. "Scary!"

"They're only scary if you get an angry one." He said with a laugh, "Most of them are pretty friendly, actually, just hanging around because they're attached to something or someplace." He checked his watch, "If we hustle a little we can get on the next ghost tour, starts in about a half hour, it's about fifteen minutes away, over in the French Quarter."

"Let's find a scary one," she said in a conspiratorial whisper. It would be exciting and fun, like watching a horror movie. "Which way?" she asked, excited to zip off to the tour. She should wait for Walt, though. She wouldn't want to lose him again.

"We'll see what we can do." He said with a nod, leading her off in the right direction. It didn't take more than about ten minutes to get there, actually, and Walt grinned when they arrived, nodding to the top-hatted man leaning against a lamp post, a German Shepherd sitting at his feet, "That's Von Thorn, he's the tour guide, he's one of the super-neat ones."

"You know him? Cool." She was impressed by Walt having all of the inside knowledge about this town. It was still hard for her to believe that he'd been around for a while. Tach skated over to the guide. "Hi!" she said brightly before bending to scratch the German Shepherd between it's ears. She was really good with animals. "Hey you," she said, grinning and nuzzling the pup. She was rewarded with some licks to the face.

He nodded, "I know most of the crew, I try and catch the tour whenever I can, same with the vampire one, but only if there's real fans in the audience, the ghost one's fun for everybody."

The guide inclined his head, smiling slightly and touching the brim of his hat by way of greeting.

Tach craned her head to look up at the guide, still petting the dog. "I want to go on your tour and see--hee!--ghosts and stuff!" she said, interrupted by another facelick that came a little too close to her mouth. She ruffled the pups ears and gave him a nudge with her nose. "Shh, I'm talking," she told him with a grin. He gave her a happy-sounding bark.

The man chuckled at that, "Well you've come to the right place for that." His voice was a comfortable drawl, he even sounded old timey, somehow, "And Louis likes you, I think you're goin' have a good time."

He nodded to Walt, then, "How you been, Walt, ain't seen you around in a while." Walt shrugged, smiling, "Oh you know, they like to keep me busy. This is Tach, she's never been to the city before, figured I should make sure she got a proper tour."

She looked up to the guide and back to Walt. She wasn't expecting Von Thorn to be able to spot Walt. She half-expected Walt to get into tours without paying. Sneaky-sneaky. She grinned up at the guide again when Walt introduced her. "Yup! That's me!"

She ruffled Louis' ears once more before standing. "He's cute." She wiped slobber off of her face. "Where do we sign up?"

Von Thorn laughed again, that same amused rumble, sweeping his hat off and holding it to his chest, "Dear, for a friend of Walter's who's never seen the city? On the house." He settled his hat back into place with a wink, "And don't let Louis fool you, he's a hellion."

Walt just laughed again, shaking his head, "Don't let this old huckster fool you, Louis is as sweet as pralines and cream." He shrugged, "I work with 'em sometimes, when they need another hand for tourist season."

She smiled brightly and bounced on her skates. "Ooh! Thanks." She giggled and scritched Louis behind the ears. "He's a sweetheart," she said before straightening up. "I like your hat." She was a hat fan, and top hats were especially cool.

She spun to face Walt. "Really? That's so cool!"

Walt smiled, nodding, "Yeah, caught one of the tours my first day here and I was hooked." He shrugged, "Then I got the delivery job and this one turned over to seasonal."

Von Thorn smiled, pushing himself up off his lamppost then as the rest of the tour group was herded out of the building by one of the other guides, "You ready for 'em, Count?" He nodded, "Of course, if everyone's ready, let's begin."

She grinned, rolling back to Walt and taking his arm again. "Is it best in front?" she asked as they started following the guide along with the rest of the group.

"So you're good at being scary?" she asked Walt, giggling. She'd never been on a ghost tour before, but it seemed like you would have to be scary to run one.

"Little group like this, we're kind of all in front." He said, smiling, "And it's usually best in the middle, somewhere."

The tour ran about an our and a half, and covered just over a mile round trip, though there were various stops and walkarounds of places with historical significance. Von Thorn was quite the storyteller, weaving everything together easily, so that the whole thing flowed from one stop to the next.

Tach was delighted by the tour. She ate it all up, totally drawn in to the story. At one hotel, she got a little spooked and wound up squealing and clinging to Walt. She giggled at herself afterward. When it was all over, she thanked Von Thorn and gave Louis a few more pets.

"That was fun," she said to Walt.
