Who: Rahne Sinclair and Harry Dresden
Where: X-Factor
What: Shenanigans!
Warnings: Nah.

Rahne was in Jamie's old office. She'd spent the better part of the last week in the room, sorting through his files and doing background work on cases. Everyone suddenly had double the caseload, if not more, and Rahne was trying to keep things as efficient as she could. She was better at sniffing out the bad guys and beating them up, but someone had to organize this mess, and she was the boss now.

All of the work also meant that she didn't have time to think about losing people she'd known for years. She was frazzled and irritable, and hadn't been sleeping well. Anakin was trying to look out for her, but she'd let him know that she didn't have time to goof around with him right now. As it was, she was pretty much at her breaking point. They definitely needed to hire new employees. Rahne hated it, and wasn't ready to welcome strangers into her family, but she had no choice.

Her head was presently buried in a thick folder, pouring over reports and photographs.

She'd always thought of Jamie as being immature and a bit of a slacker. She respected him as a boss and cared about him as a friend, but there were times when it seemed like he didn't do a whole lot. That observation ignored the fact that Jamie could duplicate himself, and send the dupes off to do work. Apparently he did at least two or three times the work anyone else did around here, and now Rahne somehow needed to fill his twenty pairs of shoes. Wolfing out and just running was starting to sound really good right now.

She screamed in frustration, a wolfish sort of snarl in the undertones, and dropped her forehead to the desk with a 'thunk'. Then, suddenly, the desk seemed a lot bigger and her feet couldn't touch the floor. Rahne looked around, trying to figure out where she was and what was going on.

Harry heard the snarl, hand tightening on his blasting rod just as the energy crackled through the air. See, this was why he hated going out on a limb. There always seemed to be something out there looking to bite him.

Still, as unsure as he was about what lie behind the door, he couldn't in good conscience just wander off and leave it for someone else to handle. It just wasn't what he did. Damn conscience. Finding the door unlocked, he pushed a little extra will into the bracelet on his left wrist, stepping through the door to find-

A little girl? He stopped, not quite relieved, looking around the office for any other reason he was so riled. Seeing nothing, he realized it had to be the kid. Huh. "Uh, hey?" Eloquent, as usual, but he wasn't sure what else to do. The girl had to know he was there, by now. A glance was spared over his shoulder back to the hall, wondering if he should go find... somebody else.

Rahne's eyes widened in fear. She didn't recognize the man, and knew she was going to be in trouble for being.. wherever she was. She sunk back into the chair a little, unsure if she should even greet him. Talking to strangers was bad. Still, he'd directly addressed her, so she should answer. And she was already going to be in trouble, no doubt.

"Hello," she said in a small voice, even by five-year-old standards.

The way the little girl tried to shrink back into the chair immediately made Harry feel like a jerk. Way to bully a small girl, Dresden, he thought petulantly. The grip on his blasting rod relaxed, even if he kept his will on the shield bracelet; he might not be enough of a jerk to go around attacking little kids, but the sound that came out of the office before he came in was anything but human. Hedging bets was sometimes called for.

He didn't move any further into the office, seeing how she was watching him, but he didn't want to leave her alone, either. He'd been told Rahne was in this office- this couldn't be her. Could it?

"My name's Harry. I was looking for a Miss Sinclair. Rahne, I think. Do you know where she is?" Small or not, she might have answers. Somebody's kid, or something. The 'or something' was more likely, but no need to be paranoid.

His words didn't seem to make the girl feel any less worried. "I.." Her eyes made a quick sweep around the office, looking for possible exits. "How do ye know my name?" she asked in a heavy Scottish accent. "Did somebody send ye? Am I in trouble? I dinna know where I am, I dinnae leave, I swear." She put her hand over her mouth when she realized she was babbling.

Something kind of like this had happened before... Where she'd suddenly been in a different place kind of like this, with strange people. She'd convinced herself that it was just a dream, but maybe that was wrong. She tried to remember the places she'd been and the people she met. This man still didn't seem familiar.

"That's you?" That is what she just said, Harry. But... the woman he'd spoken with before. She was... older. Obviously. And she'd been expecting him. He was about to give a little push, see if he could sense something from her, when the flurry of questions came. She thought she was in trouble. She looked scared. Hell, Harry wasn't any good with this kind of thing.

"Nobody sent me, Rahne, and no, of course you're not in trouble. You're in New York City. In X-Factor. Do you know where that is?" He really ought to go find somebody else, try and explain to them what happened. No reason to make the wizard the prime suspect in... whatever was going on here. But the only thing he saw when he looked at her was a scared little girl, and his damn messiah complex wouldn't let him just leave her. Not with that noise still unresolved, the hairs on the back of his neck still standing straight. Get answers from the girl, get her safe, find the bad guy. In that order.

"Aye sir," she said meekly. "I'm Rahne." She seemed to relax a little when he told her she wasn't in trouble. Reverend Craig hadn't sent him, and that was probably a good thing.

She looked uncertain when he mentioned New York. It sounded a little familiar, but she wasn't sure she was remembering it right. "I think so.." she said slowly. "Is it the place where I can have ice cream and dinna get in trouble?" He probably didn't know if any of that was true. She didn't really remember him from before. "I think it was the future." She looked a little hopeful.

He gave her a little smile when he saw her relax, trying for calming. "Hey, you can call me Harry, alright? I just want to help you. And I can't think of one reason why you would get in trouble for ice cream. So I think this is the place," Her mention of the future made him frown, and he looked around.

"It's the year 2009. Is that not... right, for you?" He'd heard someone say people came in from many points in time... could she really be in her future?

"Okay." She was becoming more and more sure that she was in the same place as before, and that Reverend Craig wasn't going to come yell at her. At the worst, this would just be another dream. She pinched her arm and winced a little. It felt real.

Rahne shook her head when he mentioned the year. "That's the future," she said matter-of-factly. She looked around, trying to remember this room. Was it Jamie's? Why was Harry here instead of Jamie? Where was Ani? And the big teddy bear! "Are we going t'do something?" she asked Harry, unsure.

Anakin had been sitting in a park across town meditating when he felt something in the Force. It was less a disturbance than a ripple, a tiny inconsistency in the universe that he wouldn't have recognized if he hadn't been on the business end of the larger one in the past. Something about time had... changed, but nothing else had. It was more curiosity than fear that had him examining what had happened, and when his thoughts were guided to X-Factor, his eyes snapped open.

There were a million reasons it could have been X-Factor, but given that Molly and Ahsoka hadn't even been around the last time the timestream had shifted like this (or so he'd been told; he couldn't remember any of it) it was probably Rahne. He felt fear, curiosity, and shyness, none of which were traits he associated with Rahne. Anakin started to run, increasing his speed when he remembered Jamie's stories about the little girl that had taken his girlfriend's place once upon a time.

Anakin ran faster than most people, thanks to Aunt Mara insisting that he shouldn't be lazy and rely on the Force for everything, though the Force did help in this case. Not only did it push him just enough to be superhuman, but it also told him when to duck, swerve, and jump, keeping him going as fast as possible for as long as possible. It wasn't long before he reached the brownstone and hurried to the office, finding a very small girl and a man she wasn't quite done being afraid of. "Hi," he said, for lack of anything better to say. "How are you, Rahnie?"

The future. Great- things just got better and better. He had just long enough to watch Rahne shuffle in her chair and consider calling the police, before a large wave of energy preceded the man skidding to a halt behind him. He took a marked step back, looking between the guy- still thrumming with some kind of weird power- and the little girl.

"Confused," He figured he might as well answer for her. No need to seem like the silent idiot to blame, after all. "I was... supposed to be meeting with someone about a job. I came back and..." Hand motion at the desk. "If this is a bad time, I can head... out," Eloquent as always, that was Harry.

The corners of Rahne's mouth turned up in an almost-smile when she saw Anakin. She remembered him from the last time she was here. She didn't realize that he looked younger now. She got down from the chair and took a few steps toward Anakin--It was the Rahne Sinclair-version of running up to him and throwing her arms around his leg in a hug. "Hi," she said softly.

"I'm okay. That's Harry. I think he's looking f'Jamie." She didn't know why she'd appeared in Jamie's office, or where he was. She looked up at Anakin, then back at Harry.

"Thank you for telling me." He couldn't imagine telling her that Jamie was gone and wasn't coming back, but he pushed that thought away for now. To Harry, he said, "On this planet, in this universe, whatever, things like this happen. This is really not the worst of it, I assure you." His brain kicked into high gear. I have to pick up Rahne's cases, I have to get Ahsoka a hotel room, I have to figure out what to do with X-Factor, I need to talk to this guy, I need to get Rahne somewhere she'll feel safe...

"I think that... the boss... mentioned you. I can call you, reschedule, and I'm sorry for the inconvenience, but the girl probably needs me more."

Rahne was relieved when he thanked her. Normally she didn't volunteer information that way, scared of getting in trouble for talking too much. But Anakin was nice, and she wanted to be helpful. She shifted from one foot to the other, looking at Anakin and waiting for the grownups to stop talking.

Harry left his card with Anakin and exited, stage left. Once everything was back to normal, they'd try this again.

As Harry left, Anakin rested his forehead against the door. While he was normally more of a follower of what Ahsoka called the Living Force, he didn't usually have small children he had to worry about. I need to get a hotel room for Ahsoka I need to clear this case log I need to talk to Jaina I need to breathe I need I need... He took a deep breath and turned to Rahne, giving her a smile.

"Are you hungry?" he asked. It was difficult to think of this small girl and his fierce, occasionally scary girlfriend as being the same person, but honestly, it was a bit difficult to think of his girlfriend as she was now and as she was a few years ago as being the same person.

Rahne seemed to relax a little when Harry left. Anakin built up some trust with the girl before. She nodded up at Anakin. She was a little hungry. "Ice cream?" she asked, hopefully. It had been a long time since she'd had any!

She glanced down the hall. She wasn't sure she remembered her way around. Somewhere around here was the room where she and Anakin had watched movies and played. "Can we watch a Dizzy movie?" she asked.

"Dizzy?" asked Anakin, to whom Earth pop culture was not a first language. "Oh, Disney. That actually sounds like a very, very good idea right now." The memories associated with little Rahne were vague and occasionally contradictory, obscured as they were by the veil of time travel. But from what he did recall, she was a very good audience.

"Come on. Let's go get your movie in, and then I'll make you some ice cream." Despite the work and chaos that was threatening to engulf him, Anakin actually felt rather peaceful guiding Rahne to the television and popping in the movie. She was a cute little girl, that did help, but part of the Jedi Code revolved around helping people, and sparing Rahne from the life he'd heard whispers about was well worth any effort, even just for a moment.

Rahne smiled when Anakin agreed to the movie. She followed close behind him, quiet as a mouse. She was still a little nervous, but she recognized the room with the TV. It looked pretty much the same. She sat down in the corner of the couch where she sat before.

"Maybe.. Should we have popcorn instead?" she asked. It was a movie, after all. "Or... both?" She looked up at the Jedi, all innocence and politeness. She didn't need all that food, but junk food wasn't about necessity.

"Popcorn and ice cream sound perfect." Their DVD collection was small, and Anakin only rarely indulged, so he didn't know which were appropriate for a girl her age. Ahsoka and Molly watched them a lot, though, and since he was technically Ahsoka's guardian, he probably should have known. But there was a friendly looking one with a red fox on the cover, so he went with that.

"All right." The movie was starting to play already; one of Jamie's first jobs for him was finding a way to disable the DVD player's reluctance to just skip ahead to the menu screen. "I'm going to get our ice cream and popcorn. I'll be right through that door if you want me, and if you get scared or need anything, just call and I'll be right there. Promise. Okay?"

Rahne nodded up at him and gave him a small smile. "Okay." She didn't think she would get scared now. She was settled in front of a movie, and it was already making her feel more relaxed and comfortable. There was a throw-blanket that was bought to be draped carefully over the couch, but had long since been crumpled up in the corner of one of the cushions. Rahne hesitantly pulled it out, wrapping up in it.

Anakin was back pretty quickly, before the opening credits had even finished rolling. More than a year ago now, he'd taken apart the microwave to figure out what it was and how it worked. After he put it back together, any bag of popcorn made in it popped to perfection in less than five seconds. This anecdote may explain everything about Anakin Solo's technical proficiency that anyone would ever need to know.

He wasn't an expert ice cream sculptor like some of the people in his life, but he hadn't done a bad job at it anyway. There were cherries, whipped cream, nuts, the whole nine yards. He put the bowl in front of her. "Bon appetit, Rahnie."

Rahne smiled, picking up her spoon. 'Rahnie' wasn't a nickname she heard very often. She was impressed by the cherries and everything, and took a bite. Once she'd swallowed, she smiled. "This is good," she commented. "Thank ye."

She ate her ice cream quietly as she watched the movie. "Are they going to fall in love?" she asked of the main characters.

"I don't know. I've never seen this movie." Probably, though, he thought. They were the only two red foxes in the entirety of whatever world this movie was meant to take place in, as far as he could tell, and that was the type of thing that happened in movies.

"If you want, we can watch another movie after this one that I know has a love story in it," he said. "Do you like that kind of thing?"

Rahne shrugged when he asked if she liked it. "It's nice when they end up with the right person," she said. She liked to think that one day she'd find her soulmate. She looked up at Anakin. "Are ye in love with someone?" she asked.

They hadn't really talked about things like that the last time she was here. They'd mostly sat around watching movies. But now she knew that she probably couldn't stay here forever. She could get taken back to her world at any time. It was a sad thought, but she wanted to make the most of her time here.

It was hard to surprise Anakin, connected as he was to an omnipresent energy force that informed the actions of every living creature in the universe. That being the case, it was pretty unusual that Rahne managed to shock him into choking on his popcorn. He tried to be subtle about it, but there was a kernel in his throat and it wanted out.

Once he was able to breathe again, he gave her a look. She still had the same curious face. "I suppose you could say that. She's a very nice girl."

Rahne didn't quite understand how he supposed she could say that. It seemed to be a pretty black and white question, to the six-year-old. Either you loved someone or you didn't. She took another bite of her ice cream as she thought.

"Are ye married t'her?" she asked. She'd given Jamie the same drill about Mia, the last time she was here. It really was a wonder that he hadn't run from the room, screaming.

It was a good thing, he told himself, that Rahne felt comfortable enough around him to ask him this kind of question. It was also a good thing that he had been expecting a follow-up, and hadn't started eating again, because this time the kernel probably would have gone straight into his lungs.

"No, I'm not." His parents had been together for years before they'd gotten married. Uncle Luke and Aunt Mara had been off-and-on for almost two decades before they got married. Jaina's marriage to Donny had been an anomaly in his family, but Jaina often followed her own path. So did Anakin, come to that.

"Not yet, anyway," he added.

Rahne frowned at Anakin. "Yuir supposed t'get married when ye love someone. It's in the Bible. It isnae right." Rahne should know. Her mother was a whore, as Rahne was often reminded. "It isnae fair. Ye should marry her."

Anakin, despite Rahne's best efforts, had never gotten around to reading the Bible. At one point he'd turned to a page at random, found that it thought that pi was exactly three, and then put it down and rarely looked back. But all the same, he wondered if Rahne held the same views that her younger self seemed determined to espouse.

"We just haven't gotten married yet. It doesn't mean that I don't love her," said Anakin, unsure why he felt the need to defend himself to a child. Especially with his plans being what they were. "I... well, let me show you something. It's a secret, though, so don't tell anyone, okay?" Anakin took a small box out of his shirt pocket and opened it. "I was thinking about giving this to her. Do you think she'll like it?"

Rahne smiled, nodding. "It's very pretty," she said, pleased that he was listening to her instead of trying to argue. "I think she'll like it a lot." Rahne couldn't imagine why any girl wouldn't want to get married. "I promise not t'tell anyone."
