Who: Sophie Devereaux and Sam Ford
What: Shopping
Warnings: Not a one. Unless office supplies scare you? Or zombies attack at the mall...

She'd been laying low since telling Sam she was going to France, but she'd missed him. And his father, perhaps, but she'd not go there if she could help it. And with the end of summer fast approaching, She was rather sure neither of the Ford men had taken into account that with the fall came school, and with school came the need for new things.

And so it was that, without warning or invitation, she was knocking on their door, ready to drag the younger Ford out to the stores.

Working out was really good for Sam. It gave him something to think about besides his hopeless crush. Spending time with Eliot wasn't exactly puppies and rainbows, and the man probably wouldn't put up with Sam for that long, but it was something to do, and it made Sam feel a little less helpless. Maybe he'd be able to actually get Eliot back on the team.

So it was a sweaty, slightly sticky Sam Ford that came to the door to answer the knock. He took a quick glance through the peephole, in the off-chance that it was Iggy. He wouldn't have wanted Iggy to see (or rather, smell) him like this. Sophie was okay, though. He opened the door to let her in. "Sophie! Hey. Come in." He moved out of the way, toweling off the back of his neck. "What's up?"

Lifting a brow, she crinkled her nose lightly as she looked at him before offering a smile. Instead of a more habitual kiss to the cheek, she settled instead for reaching for his hair, ruffling it lightly.

"Just the man I was hoping to find. Thought you might want to accompany me to some shops..."

"That bad, huh?" Sam smirked at Sophie's reaction. He was still in his gym clothes. "I started working out." He hadn't really been able to do much in the athletics department when he'd been sick, and he certainly hadn't been able to run. It was nice.

"Shopping?" Sam shrugged. "Sure. Should probably shower first, huh?"

She laughed, shaking her head. "Maybe not quite that bad... and I see that. You're looking good, doll. Feeling good as well, I hope."

She nodded, pointing in the general direction of the bathroom as she moved further inside. "That'd been a good idea, given that you'll be trying things on."

He grinned. "Yeah. Feeling great. Better than ever." He raised a brow. "Trying things on?" He started for the bathroom. "Okay. I'll just be a minute. Watch TV or make out with Dad or something."

Sam grinned and ducked into the bathroom. After a minute, the sound of the shower came from behind the door.

"Mhm... trying things on. It's back to school time, doll." And she said it as if it was old hat. As far as she was concerned, any excuse for shopping was to be exploited.

She offered him a mild look at his suggestion and took a seat on the sofa, idly wondering how Sam felt about shoe shopping. Because really.... Nate wasn't even there.

Ah, right. Back-to-school. He had been thinking and fretting and worrying over a lot of things about the start of school, but clothes hadn't been on his mind. After all, new clothes wouldn't make an impression on the person he was hoping to impress.

He showered quickly and re-emerged in a pair of jeans and a shirt. "Where are we going?" he asked as he shoved his foot into a pre-tied pair of sneakers.

She was sitting on the sofa, mentally working out a new con when she heard him and looked up, her smile forming. "Well... first we hit 5th avenue. Then we can do all the supplies and what not." Now that he was all clean, she stood and moved over to him, wrapping and arm around his shoulder and face hugging him lightly. "I'm so glad to see you up and about. How's everything else?"

"So first we do the shopping for all of my Sophie-sized back to school things, and then we take care of the other stuff?" Sam grinned, teasing her. He didn't mind being used as an excuse. He was glad to see Sophie. He hugged her back. "Me too. Everything else? It's okay, I guess. Things with Dad have been good. And I have a few days of freedom left before this 'school' thing starts again." Conveniently leave out the thing about the boy, yes. "How's France?"

"I am quite positive they have Sam-sized things there as well. If you've a particular preference, let me know... I don't have fun excuses like back to school to shop for. Do you have all the necessities? We can start at Macy's." Besides, they had the cutest pair of pumps in the window last time she walked by... "And I'm glad to hear your father's been well."

Hooking her arm lightly around his shoulders, she ushered him towards the door, wish, if possible, to avoid said father for the moment. "France is... France. It's work. I'm glad I could slip away and just be Sophie Devereaux for the day."

Sam smirked. Necessities at Macy's, huh? "I would follow you to the ends of the earth, my dear," he supplied, flourishing with a little bow.

He paused to lock up on the way out, indicating perhaps that his father was not home and the comment about Sophie making out with them had been a bit of a bluff. He was a tricky boy like that. "There's probably work around here, you know," he said, his tone as light-hearted as it could be regarding the sensitive subject. He pushed on, though, seemingly not wanting to dwell on it. "So, Macy's." A half-hearted attempt, but it was an out for Sophie if she wanted it.

"Charming as ever, I see... and yes, Macy's."

Sliding her arm through his, she steered him in the direction of shopping, quite ready to spend the day happily arguing over what to buy and what not to buy. She was also quite content ignoring any talk about Nathan - partly because she realllllly wanted to know how he was, but was refusing to ask. There were games she just wasn't willing to play any longer. As for work, well... "There's something about not working where you live that makes a bit of sense... at least in my line of work."

"Acting?" Sam offered with a bit of snark. He tucked his arm around hers, looking up the street at the shops. His mind wandered, picturing the shape of wings on various forms ahead of them. He glanced up at the sky, scanning for birds or people. He wasn't really surprised that he didn't see anything out of the ordinary.

His gaze returned to Sophie. "So you up to date on all of the latest London fashions? I don't want to show up in yesterday's Paris garb. Because that would just be embarrassing."

".. my other line of work." She smirked, nudging him lightly. "I'll keep the acting here, I think. I'll have to set some auditions up, once I know when I'm back for a bit."

She watched him, a bit curious at how he looked upward occasionally as they walked, But nodded at his question. "Oh, I'm quite sure we'll be able to have you ready to walk the runway in your off period. You looking for planes, doll?" ::She nodded lightly as they came towards Macy's, seeing it up ahead on the corner. "Our first mecca..."

"Oh, right," he said with a lopsided grin. "Cool. I'll keep an eye out for auditions. Maybe we could work together." That probably wasn't the best idea, but Sophie might like the sound of it.

He shrugged and made up a quick story. "Oh. Just looking out for vortexes. The other day I was running and one opened practically ontop of me. Missed the guy by about a foot. Just trying to make sure no random people from a piano dimension fall ontop of us or anything." Well, he couldn't very well tell her the truth. Not without a lengthy conversation that he wasn't ready to have yet. He chuckled as they walked up to Macy's. "Our pilgrimage is complete. I'd hold the door open for you, but.." he commented as the automatic door slid open for them.

"Vortexes. Really? I hadn't heard they'd been a problem." She nodded accepting the answer on the surface, although she could tell he was making it up as he went. One didn't get to be a grifter of her skill without being able to tell when someone else was lying - it was rather nice to know they hadn't all rubbed off on him the wrong way. She couldn't imagine Nate being ok with the idea of his son going into the same line of business they were in.

Grinning as the doors open, she stepped in, nose twitching lightly as they looked at the gauntlet of perfumes and cosmetics, skin creams and serums.... and had to forcibly remind herself they were shopping for him. "Oh, shopping mecca. It's not custom designer, but it's an excellent start." She started through the rows towards the far elevator banks, her arm in his. "What's this about working together? I didn't realize you were interested in the stage..."

One day he'd be able to fool Sophie. She was about the only person that could see through him. Most of the time he could even get past his dad. Of course, Nate had a lot on his mind. He let it go for now, rather than try to convince her.

Sam wasn't really a shopper. He'd been dragged around by Sophie enough over the years that he really shouldn't be intimidated by the giant department stores, but he still wasn't a huge fan. He refused to let it show, though, because he wouldn't want to discourage Sophie from spending time with him. "I could've sworn I've mentioned it before. Maybe the fumes are making you forget," he said, gesturing to the perfume counters.

Then something pricked at his brain. He tilted his head, looking back at the counters. He broke step, unconsciously slowing down. Scent. Iggy had mentioned something about recognizing people by scent. It had made Sam a little self-conscious--it was easier to wear nice clothes and do something cool with your hair than it was to control the way he smelled... Or was it? Maybe Sam should start wearing cologne.

Of course, slowing down had made Sam vulnerable to the vulture-like bottle-wielders. "Not the eyes!" he protested as he was spritzed by something.

He'd been dragged around for years, but for her this was their first real shopping trip, and she wasn't sure what to expect - teenage boys were so rarely her thing after all. She couldn't imagine shopping was at the top of his list, but it was all the more reason to make sure he had what he needed.

She was moving along toward the elevators, and didn't think to make sure he was behind her when she heard the light yelp. Looking over her shoulder she chuckled as she saw who - or rather what had accosted him. Moving back over he looked at what the girl held, shaking her head lightly. "No, no... that's way to heavy. You want something lighter. Cologne should be a sort of secondary impression, not like a bulldozer. And you're still young - I'd go for something fresh."

"Too late," Sam said, feigning choking. "I think she killed my sense of smell." It looked like Sophie had added a new item to Sam's list of necessities. And it would even seem like it was her idea. Nice.

He followed her to the counter, holding up a hand to stop a woman with another spray bottle. He reached for one of her cards instead, sniffing it. If there was an art to this--swishing it in the mouth before spitting it out, or whatever--it was completely lost on Sam. The only time he'd worn cologne when he was eight and he snuck some of his dad's before a play he was in.

He wrinkled his nose a little when he smelled the card, then passed it to Sophie. "That's sort of.. uh." He didn't quite understand the logic behind trying to cover up the smell of sweat with a cologne that smelled like the inside of a locker room. Maybe it was just his unrefined palate.

She took a whiff of the card, then scrunched her nose a bit in disgust. "Oh, that's terrible. I don't know the target demographic for that is." She turned and looked at a few of the other counters, glancing at the various names. Most she dismissed out of hand... either too heavy, too old, or way too overused. Finally she directed him to a name she didn't recognize, taking a card from the woman and inhaling slowly, the scent bringing to mind freshly fallen rain.

Wordlessly, she handed the card to him, curious to see what he'd think.

While Sophie was looking with a more educated eye and nose, Sam was pretty much flying blind. And while that might be the mindset he was hoping to have, it didn't exactly inspire confidence in him. He sniffed another card and made a face. It was too girly. And while Iggy might prefer a girly smell on his romantic partners--probably did, really--Sam didn't think he would be able to fool Iggy into thinking he was a girl and falling head over heels by using a berry-scented lotion.

After dismissing the girl-smell, he took Sophie's card and sniffed it. He tilted his head to the side. That wasn't bad, actually. It smelled sort of.. naturey. It made him think of rain and trees and things, and he could see birds and wings.. "That's not bad," he said.

"It's nice... hardly overwhelming. To really tell, though, you've got to smell it on yourself - your body chemistry is what really decides how it will smell."

Sophie reached for his wrist, ignoring the counter attendant as she picked up the tester, spritzing his wrist. She gave it a moment to try, then lifted it up, breathing it in. With a light nod of approval, she offered him his own wrist, smiling. "Now tell me what you think."

Sam really didn't have the nose for this. Body chemistry impacting colognes.. It sounded like something a fashion magazine had made up. Or maybe something Sophie would tell someone on a con. He sniffed his wrist and couldn't tell a difference. "It.. smells like cologne?"

At least Nate wouldn't have to deal with a flaming son who rambled about clothing and makeup all the time. Sam didn't think of himself as 'butch', but his lack of connection to cosmetics comforted him a little.

He shrugged. "I'm not trying to date myself. What do you think? Is it sexy? Will girls like it?"

"Sam, Sam... Darling. We've talked about this. Not until you graduated high school can we date, love..." With a flashed grin she tugged him in lightly, kissing his brow, amused by the look the attendant offered. "I don't know how sexy it is, but I think it's a good scent for you, if you're in the market for one. It suits you, and that's the important part. Just promise you'll not wear a bottle a week."

She nodded to the attendant to bag up the collection - body wash, cologne, aftershave, the works, flicking plastic out of her purse to offer as payment. "Right then... upstairs? I hear pink's the new black."

Sam smirked at her edict. "But mom, all the other kids are doing it." He raised a brow as she bought the whole collection for him. He would've thought one would be enough, but he didn't argue. He'd just be careful not to use too much.

"Pink?" he said, taking the bag from the attendant and following Sophie. "You're just asking for me to get beat up, aren't you?" he said, smirking again. He was a little less worried about that since Eliot was giving him fighting lessons. Still, it was best not to tempt fate with pink.

Sophie simply lifted a brow, ignoring look from the clerk as she tsked at Sam. "If all the other kids were jumping from a ledge, would you? You'll just have to wait."

Smirking lightly, she retraced their steps until they were well on their way to the elevator bay, stopping at level 3 - Men's clothing. "It takes a certain kind of man to pull off pink... don't think you can?" With a nudge to the small of his back, she steered him towards the younger men's section, idly beginning to look through the various racks of clothes. "And the ladies love it..."

"You're right," Sam admitted with a smirk. "There would probably be a line." He doubted Sophie would have to worry. Sam didn't think there was a chance of him dating. Finding the right person was hard enough for 'normal' people, let alone him.

"It's not the 'wearing it' that I'm worried about. It's the 'other people seeing me in it' that's the problem. You remember that I go to high school, right?" He followed along, amused. He wouldn't flat-out deny suggestions Sophie made. He would tease her about things, though. "I think the ladies love it for their purses and ponies and things."

"I suppose you could always transfer to a school for the blind, and then you'd not have to worry about what people see..." She smirked lightly, talking a big game about pink but realistically pulling out clothes slightly more reasonable - while perhaps a bit boutique-ish, it wasn't anything completely out of line for a high school. But the tee shirts were Affliction, the jeans designer, the pants obviously tailored... She had an eye for quality, and it wasn't too long before one of the sales associates caught wind of a shopper with a purchase, gathering the things she set aside for him too choose from. "High school, yes yes. I remember it well. Well, not really."

"How about formal stuff... any fall flings or what-have-you to impress the ladies at?"

At the mention of 'blind', Sam coughed. Half of his brain was pretty much always thinking about guys--mainly Iggy, these days--and when that part crossed wires with the half that was supposed to take care of talking, there was a short. He wasn't blushing, thankfully, but she'd surprised him.

He followed her around, letting her pick out various things. "Don't remember? But it can't have been that long. Too much perfume sniffing." He rubbed the back of his neck. "Um. I don't know. Don't really pay much attention to that stuff."

"I doubt the halycon days my youth are really something you want to hear about." She flashed an easy smile, a look of concern crossing her face as she heard him cough - he was acting slightly off, but she couldn't quite place it.

Picking a sports jacket off a rack she held it up to him, visually judging the size as she simply shook her head. "No interest in relationships then, love? You sure seem interested enough in mine..."

"I'm fine, I'm fine," he said when he saw her concern. "I feel great." He didn't want her thinking he was getting sick again.

He raised an eyebrow at the sports jacket and shrugged. "You're the one that said I couldn't date," he reminded her. "Haven't really had anyone express interest. And I was sick last year and everything. Didn't really have time." He shrugged, like it wasn't a big deal. "Maybe the new cologne will help." He gave her a wry smile.
