Who: Lisa Cuddy and Bruce Wayne
What: Discussing their rendezvous the other night
Where: The hospital
When: Today
Warnings: TBD

Really Cuddy didn't want to have this conversation. She thought it was probably best if they would just kind of ignore the whole thing. Of course that wasn't going to happen. The other night with Bruce had been just a whim, maybe. Or she didn't really know. The fact that it was with him of all people got her a little irritated. He had broken her heart, and she had just kind of crawled right back.

Oh how pathetic she was. But that's why they were having this conversation, right? When he told her that he wanted to talk, she told him to come by the hospital to her office, and then they'd talk.

It was a good thing it wasn't his grin, or she would have wiped it off his face. And she was glad that he wasn't pacing around like a caged animal, she hardly though it was cause for all of that.

"Thank you," she answered and though she was sure he was telling the truth, he almost always said things like that. Since it looked like it was her turn to start, she cleared her throat.

"You and I both know that this world plays a lot of stupid pranks on everyone at the same time. We also both know that the other day.. days.. nights.. whatever were a part of that. I'm not sure why us, and why together, but it probably wasn't our own doing, right?"

"Probably," he agreed. "Not consciously, anyway." He gave her a small smile, with a hint of sadness. "You can tell me it was a mistake, Lisa, and I won't be upset. You can say you regret it. But I'm not leaving this office until I say that I've missed you." It was in part to himself that he said that. It was difficult for him to discuss his feelings sometimes, and he'd had to tell himself he would tell her these things. "And I don't just mean the sex. I've missed seeing you.. Talking to you." He leaned forward, his voice quiet. "There's something you bring into my life.." He shook his head a little. "I missed you," he summed up.

Her eyes narrowed slightly, "I wasn't quite saying that. I might not be angry at you any more but.. that doesn't mean I'm saying either of those things. I'm just saying it probably wasn't us." She didn't really know what to say to the fact that he missed her.

Finally she just nodded her head. "I'm not sure what you want me to say, Bruce. It's not like.. you left, and that way you made your feelings quite clear."

"I didn't leave." His inner emotions weren't kittens and rainbows, but Bruce rarely felt sorry for himself. This moment had cut into nearly every section of his life and he didn't even remember it. "A me left, and it was stupid. I've been trying to make it up to people for months, but Lisa. I don't remember walking out that door. I don't remember writing you a note. I wouldn't ever do that." He'd promised the kids. Even if the thought crossed his mind for some reason, he couldn't do it now.

"A you left? What the hell is that supposed to mean? Okay, sure you don't remember it.. but what was it then? Someone just took over your body? Switched places with you?" She did feel a little bad that he kept having to make it up to people, but most of her was still on guard. A lot of people had left her, not that that was his fault. She blamed herself, even if it wasn't at all.

He shook his head. "No. No one took over my body. I'm sure I was under my own control." He didn't intend to complain about what happened, or make anyone feel sorry for him. "There was a situation and I handled it poorly." Knowing what he did now, having seen what happened, he wouldn't let it happen again. He wasn't going to leave any of them.

But with Cuddy, it looked like the point was moot. He didn't expect her to give him another chance. "I'm sorry," he said, standing up.

Mostly she was just confused because she didn't understand how he could say he didn't remember anything, and then say he was under his control. She sighed and rubbed her eyes when he stood up because she didn't know how to handle this herself. "It's.. in the past, and I've been more than a pain in the ass to you about it. And I'm sorry I have I just.. I keep going through this. Every time I get attached to someone they leave. You'd think I'd learn."

Bruce didn't have a better way of explaining it to her. One night he had fone to sleep next to Lisa, then when he woke up he was alone and she wasn't speaking to him. Still, he wasn't in the habit of shirking responsibility, regardless of whether or not it made sense to blame himself.

"You don't need to apologize," he said. He'd told her before that her feelings were justified, and he understood where she was coming from. He wasn't sure what she meant when she said it was in the past. Was she dismissing it because time had passed? Bruce wasn't good at letting things go, and didn't really expect Lisa to be any better at it. "I've already promised a half dozen teenagers that I won't leave again. Ones that I've trained with the skills they'd need to hunt me down if I did leave." He offered a small smile. "I'm not disappearing again." He was still standing, unsure from her words if she wanted him to stay or not. Sure, he could unravel the plots of mastercriminals, but his deductive reasoning seemed to fall short when it came to making a relationship work.

"Have I overstayed my welcome?"

No, she wasn't very good at letting things go, that was probably why she was so.. well like she was. But she was trying to make an effort for herself. It wasn't like she really wanted to be mad at him, or that she was even. If she had been, she would have mostly likely told him to get out much earlier.

She nodded her head and smiled back, "Oh I imagine they would most definitely hunt you down." Because she knew how much he had made them upset, just as upset as she had been. No one liked to be left all alone after all, even if they had each other. Still, even when he said he wouldn't disappear, there would always be that silent wait for the other shoe to drop, like she'd knew it had been coming. But as long as he actually stuck around, they wouldn't have that problem.

Her head shook, "No no.. you can stay if you want to. I think we should figure out what we're doing.. if we can."

He raised a brow. He'd assumed she had already made up her mind. They weren't good at in-depth relationship conversations. Still, he wanted to do what he could to make this work. He sat back down in the chair, leaning back slightly. He didn't look casual, per se, but it was an approximation. He nodded. "Yes. We should... figure it out."

He rubbed the bridge of his nose, thinking. "Lisa... I love you. I want this to work. But I'm not going to beg." There was no anger or resentment in his words. It was almost that he couldn't beg. That he didn't know how.

No, they weren't really good at this sort of thing, either one of them. Now if only they could actually figure it out without too much akwardness. However his words did seem to surprise her a bit. "You.. love me? I mean.. you still do?" because this whole time she kind of figured he had stopped. Ages ago maybe.

"I don't want you to beg. I just.. didn't know. I figured after the things I said, you didn't want to be around me. I wouldn't blame you. I was harsh." That was putting it mildly.

An amused smile pulled at his lips when she was surprised that he loved her. Maybe that should've been the first thing he said. It would've made things so easy--only it wasn't easy for him to say. That was the catch, wasn't it?

"I still do," he said softly. He would've reached out to touch her hand, but her surprise made it obvious that she didn't still love him. With time, maybe, but he would let her guide the pace, for now. "You haven't done enough to make me stop. I've been respecting your wishes and giving you distance, but that doesn't mean I've stopped wanting to be around you."

It wasn't so much that she didn't still love him, it was just that she hadn't thought about her feelings for him all that much until they had spent the night together, several days ago. Since then she'd been either trying to avoid it, or still thinking.

She nodded her head a little, "It was probably better that way, anyway. Giving me space I needed but.." she trailed off, not quite sure what to say. "I.. well I'm willing to try again. I can't say that I haven't missed you, because I have. Quite a lot actually."

He smiled. "Good. I'd like that." Trying again. It wasn't often you got a second chance, he knew, and he was grateful.

"I have two questions," he said, leaning forward. "The first is: When do you get off work?" He planned for all possible outcomes, and a dinner reservation for two at one of the nicest restaurants in town happened to be one of those plans. He was glad he wouldn't have to cancel it.

"Me too," she agreed. Good, that was settled and it hadn't even been a hard decision. It felt right, that was the only thing that mattered to her.

She smirked at him, "I'm the boss, I can leave anytime I want to. What's the second question?" Okay maybe not exactly when she wanted to, but it wasn't like she really dealt with House all that much lately.

"Good. I'd like to take you to dinner tonight." He smiled.

"Second question is: Am I allowed to donate to your hospital again?" It wasn't a romantic question, but it was a matter he'd like to get straightened sooner rather than later. There was a wry smile on his face, indicating that he knew the question was an odd one. There were certainly other hospitals in town he could donate to, but this was the one that 99% of the vortexed/arrivals/whatevers used, and there were people he loved among that list.

"Dinner would be all right with me," she said smiling back.

Ah the hospital thing. She hadn't expected him to bring that up either, but since he did she didn't see why not. "If you'd like to, I think that can be most definitely arranged." Apparently it was benefiting her work not to be such a stingy pain the ass too. So there was that.

He nodded, smiling. "Good. Seven?"

"If you prefer, we can make the donation anonymous." He wouldn't want her to have to worry about any talk or rumors going around as to why he may have started donating again suddenly. The hospital probably received plenty of anonymous donations, particularly lately.

"Seven's perfect." That would give her just enough time to finish up whatever she needed to.

She shook her head, "No no. That's fine. I mean they didn't know why you'd stopped, and they won't know why you've started up again. They don't really need to know anyway. Besides, I have this feeling you've been sending money this whole time anyway."

He just smiled in answer to her suspicions. "You know how people talk." The last time they'd dated, their pictures had been all over magazines. If she really wanted him to, he could keep news of their dating life out of the tabloids. He'd rather keep this out in the open, though. Allowing parts of his life to be public detracted attention from the parts he was hiding. Besides, last time the tabloids had, for the most part, had positive things to say about Lisa. He enjoyed that.
