Who: Tach and Sophie
What: Ice Cream!
Warnings: Nope!

Tach was at the ice cream place early. She was a regular and all of the employees there knew her. She was sitting on a bar stool, her legs swinging back and forth. She leaned forward, elbows on the counter as she waited. A tiny kitten-head poked out of her pocket. "Hi Kiki!" she said, scritching the little thing's head. "Do you like ice cream too?"

When she heard the bell on the door ring, she turned around and saw Sophie. She waved excitedly to the woman and motioned to the seat next to her.

Ice cream wasn't Sophie's normal way of spending an afternoon, but it did hold it's appeal. only a few minutes late, she nodded as she saw Tach - how could she not? - and made her way over, sliding onto a stool at the counter with a smile.

"What a cute little shop..."

Tach grinned. "It's my favorite! They have so many flavors and it's all really good." She spoke quickly, and her voice was a little high pitched--in a cute way, not a 'nails-on-chalkboard' way. The shop had an Old Fashioned soda fountain sort of look. There were other places Tach went if she was in the mood for frozen custard or frozen yogurt or the kind with all the mix-ins.. But this place was Tach's first choice, and the place she always took people for their first time. Had to have the basics first.

"Hi, Johnny," she said as one of the workers came up to take their order. "Can I get..." She looked at the ice cream flavors behind the glass, trying to choose. "A scoop of raspberry white chocolate and a scoop of peanut butter cup and one of pumpkin?"

Sophie just smiled a bit as Tach talked about ice cream, nodding at the appropriate places. It wasa bit strange, really - Tach wasn't the sort she'd have pegged as the type she'd get friendly with, but this place had quickly had her going with the flow of what ever happened. Besides, it wasn't shopping or art museums.

The order itself had her blinking, and she offered the counter help a polite smile. "One scoop of strawberry, please."

Tachikoma was friendly with everyone. It had gotten her into trouble once or twice. She was used to being told who the bad guys were, and nobody from Section 9 was here to do that now. Much of her 'purpose' was gone. Still, Tach made the best of things. One of those 'bests' was ice cream.

Once she'd gotten her ice cream, she took a bite and grinned. "This reminds me of Batou's natural oil!" she said, although it didn't make much sense. The taste wasn't the same at all, but then she didn't have sensors for taste when she was a tank.

"What do you like to do?" she asked Sophie, excitement ever-present in her tone.

"I'm sorry. It tastes like what?" She lifted her brow in inquiry, quite sure she misheard the girl. Or maybe natural oil was a cooking thing? She didn't know. She did know her own ice cream was quite good, with real bits of strawberry and a creamy smooth taste... "It's delectable. Thank you for inviting me..."

The next question had her grin, and she leaned her elbow lightly on the counter. "What do I like to do? I like Art, and shiney things, and acting. I do love the stage..."

"Natural oil! The other tachikomas got the synthetic stuff, but I'm Batou's favorite, so he gave me the good stuff." She looked quite pleased with herself. Upper-managment hadn't been too happy when they found out Batou was sneaking natural oil to his tachikoma, and there were suspicions that it had led to their developing unwanted individuality. But it was so tasty! In as much as a machine could taste.

"I like shiny things too," she said, smiling. "Ooh, how do you act? I haven't done that before."

Sophie nodded, doing well for a moment pretending she had a clue, then giving up. "I'm sorry Doll. You lost me somewhere between other tachikomas and synthetic."

"How do you Act?" The question gave her pause for a moment. "It's all about becoming someone else, and making the role your own. Adding dramatic flair Making your audience stand up and take notice..." At least, that's what she considered Acting, with a capital A. The fact that she was much better at wearing another persona off stage was something that was lost on her, more often than not.

It took Tach a minute to figure out why Sophie was so confused. "Oh!" That's right! She hadn't told Sophie! "I used to be a tank!" Tach said, smiling brightly. "For a top-secret organization that fought cyber crime! There were a bunch of us, but I was Batou's favorite." She'd said that already, but she didn't get to brag that often. "The synthetic oil is all right.. It keeps you running! But the natural stuff is a special treat."

"Oh," she said, nodding as she understood. "Kitten was really good at that. But people sometimes got mad at her because of it.." Tach's smile faltered briefly as she remembered when Merv's mother showed up and thought Kitten was her son. It was so bad.

Her mood quickly brightened, though, as she moved on to other things. "Hey, you're Ellie's friend, right?"

"Oh, a tank. That's lovely." A month ago she would have questioned such a thing, but that was before everyone got super powers and her non-boyfriend's dead son showed up, and turned out to be a great kid. "It's always good to be favoured, no?"

"Acting can be hard. I'm not sure why someone would get mad about it... it seems an odd trait to get angry over." Of course, she was still talking about Acting, not grifting. Completely different.

"You mean Eliot? Yes, I'm his friend... We're associates." Eliot might not consider her high on the friend list right now, but he'd get over it.

"Yeah," she said, a hint of nostalgia in her voice. "It was fun. Lots of action." Nobody nowadays let her have a submachine gun. Not fair.

"She was a mean lady," Tach said. It wasn't really a fun topic, but at least the lady was gone now. Tach shrugged and ate a spoonful of ice cream.

"Are you guys still fighting?" she asked. She didn't know any details, but she remembered the last time she'd invited Sophie to get ice cream, Ellie and Sophie were arguing and she couldn't get them to both eat ice cream together.

"It sounds rather adventurous." And the idea that she was eating ice cream with a former tank would be filed away until later.

"Who was mean... the kitten or your boyfriend's mother? I think that's part of the job. As for Eliot..." She shrugged lightly, taking another spoonful of the ice cream and letting it melt slowly in her mouth. She didn't really know how things stood with Eliot, but airing dirty laundry with outsiders wasn't done.

"We're fine. We're a team. It's like family." And it was... albeit a strange family.

Tach nodded. "It was fun. I like to help people." She was still trying to find a way to do that here. None of the governmental organizations seemed to be interested in hiring her. Mostly they tried to get her out of their offices as quickly as they could.

"Merv's mother. She was awful. She hit Kitten and called her all sorts of names because she thought she was Merv." She mixed a bit of her pumpkin and peanut butter ice cream together and ate it together.

"I hope not like Merv's family." She took another bite of her ice cream. "Hey, tell me stuff about Ellie!" Her smile was back in full force.

"Helping people is surprisingly fulfilling. Who knew?" It still surprised her sometimes how easily they'd all fallen into the habit of helping folks. Nathan and his bad influence.

The whole bit about Merv and his mom and Kitten completely confused Sophie, although she didn't let it show. Instead she decided to just bypass that whole bit of the conversation and move on to Eliot.

"What sort of stuff would you like to know? He's a good guy... Excellent at what he does."

"Do you guys do stuff to help people?" She didn't really know the specifics of what most people did. She didn't have a very good concept of jobs defining people. Maybe that was strange, since Merv literally was defined by his job. He was a dream, and Tach was lucky he was even allowed out of the Dreaming to see her. She'd joined Merv and his team a few times to work, and she enjoyed doing it.. But she didn't really have a job here, and she'd never thought of being a tachikoma as a job.

"What's he do?" It seemed a natural first question. Eliot hadn't told her.

"We do. We...." She paused for a moment as she thought of a way to describe it. It was easy to lie, but that seemed a bit wrong, given the situation. And she didn't know what Eliot may have already told the girl.

"We make things right. Or at least, more right than they were. And Eliot, He... He does a lot of different things." Like bust heads and break bones. "He's quite handy in a kitchen."

When Tach really focused in on a conversation, it was sometimes a bit disconcerting. The excited energy had funneled into rapt attentiveness and her full gaze was on Sophie. Once Sophie had finished, she smiled. "That's good." Of course making things right was good. "I try to do that too." People sometimes questioned her methods, but she tried.

"He is?" She smiled brightly. "Like cooking?" Tach had gotten better at cooking, but it was still a bit of an adventure to try a dinner made by her, mainly due to the bizarre food combinations she used. "He's not very good in a hot air balloon," she said, lowering her voice conspiratorially.

"To make things right? And how do you go about it?"

The scrutiny was a bit off putting, but seemed innocent enough - Sophie could read people, and there was nothing particularly dangerous about the vibe Tach put off.

"He can cook, actually. It was a bit surprising. All sorts of little appetizers and garnishes. Quite impressive." The hot air balloon information surprised her into a laugh. "Isn't he? That's very good to know... We haven't yet had the Montgolfier sort of job."

"Um. Well, I guess I haven't in a while. But when I was with Section 9, I used to go on covert missions, and be camouflaged and be really sneaky and stuff. We saved people's lives and stopped terrorists and stuff." She got excited when she talked about work. "They'd try to hack into people's brains and we'd have to hack off their heads! Well... We didn't always use violence." She did enjoy the play on words, though, even if it was a bit disturbing how giddy and child-like she sounded while talking about decapitation.

"Ooh, neat. Can he make ice cream?" Tach didn't subsist only on ice cream, but she consumed an awful lot of it. She grinned when Sophie laughed. "Yeah, he doesn't like heights. But he said he wasn't scared." Tach still wasn't quite sure she believed that. "What's a Montgolfier?"

"You hacked off their heads?" Her eyes widened a bit at that. It seemed a bit extreme, but she wasn't completely sure Eliot hadn't done that at least once or twice in the past. Still, the talk of government being involved seemed a bit different from what it was the team did. At the very least, it sounded like the government. Government was always something to be wary of. "What is Sector 9?"

"You sure do like ice cream, don't you? I've no idea if he can make it.. I suppose I could ask?" She mentally filed away the bit about Eliot and heights, and smiled. " Joseph-Michel and Jacques-Étienne Montgolfier invented the Hot Air Balloon."

"Not literally." She grinned. "Section 9 was a top secret group that fought cyber crime. There weren't very many of people in it, which was a problem sometimes! We went all over. Sometimes the prime minister made us help with stuff, but I don't think the Major liked that very much." Tachikoma didn't know of many things that didn't make the Major grumpy.

"Mmhm!" She said, grinning as she nibbled at her melting ice cream. "Oh!" It probably didn't help Eliot's confidence much that Tach had taken him up into a hot air balloon knowing next to nothing about the contraption.

"You were a tank, and fought cyber crime?" Sophie blinked at that, but otherwise kept a calm demeanor. She dealt with Parker on a regular basis, so crazy wasn't really anything new. Tach did seem to take it to a new level, however. "Prime Minister? Which government did you work for?"

Sophie took the last bit of her ice cream, then placed the spoon next to the silver dish, pressing both away from her slightly. "I shall definitely ask him about his ice cream making skills." And she would, too. She looked forward to the look on his face.

"Yeah. But, I mean. Cyber crime there is a lot different from cyber crime here. We had androids and people with cyborg parts and almost everybody could connect to the internet with their brains or hook up to each other." It opened up a whole new door for viruses and identity theft. Of course, security had been stepped up a notch but there were always people who tried to find a way around it. "Japan. We didn't really work for them.. We did the stuff they couldn't do themselves." Everyone got really haughty when the government called them in and tried to boss them around.

She grinned. "Cool." She still had a bit of ice cream left, since she'd started with more and had been talking a lot. Most of it was melted now, though, and running together. "What else is there about him?" she asked, eager to know more about Eliot. "I know he doesn't like computer chips."

"Oh, I see." She didn't see at all, really, but thought the whole thing sounded like one of Alec's wet dreams. Still, she was good enough to pull off a semblance of understanding, so long as there wasn't a quiz at the end. "I know what it's like to do what others can't do for themselves. That's similar to what we do, although we probably have a different methodology. Not a single robot to be found."

"As for Eliot... I guess there's a lot about him. I didn't know he had an issue with computer chips, but I'm hardly surprised. He doesn't like guns, much... and I'm almost certain he flat-irons his hair." Sophie grinned. "It sounds like you like him."

"Yeah. I was telling that other guy that maybe he should put a chip in Ellie's head so that he can track him, but Ellie really didn't like that idea. He doesn't like guns?" That was strange to Tach. It was like saying someone didn't like fingers. Of course, they weren't attached to her anymore, which was probably a good thing. "He has pretty hair," she agreed, even though she wasn't exactly sure what a flat-iron was. "Yeah, he's nice."

"Really? You're like Section 9? Do you think I could help sometime? I really miss adventure and helping people and I'm really good at what I do! Even without the holonomic drive system and the grenade launchers! Please?"

"Hardison? Yes, we're not really the sort who appreciate being tracked. Autonomy is a tough trait to shake." Not that she'd put it past Hardison to try and chip them anyway, but he wasn't the only one who excelled at what he did. "He also likes horses, if that helps at all."

The excited stream of words that followed had her blinking, and she laughed lightly as she held up a calming hand. "I don't know if we have a holonomic drive system " as she had no idea what that was "But you'd have to ask Hardison. I do know we completely lack grenade launchers. As for the jobs, well... We've not had one in a while. Should we start, we might could use a bit of assistance. What are you good at?"

"Autonomy is sort of new for me. I think I'm getting the hang of it." Becoming human had been a process for her. It had taken Tachikoma over a week just to figure out how to sleep. It was even longer before she realized that she could take off the roller skates that had been on her feet when she arrived. She'd been around for a while now, though, and had adapted fairly well to most things about humanity.

"I'm really good with computers. And with spotting things like danger! And I know how to fight. And.." She tried to think of other skills that would transfer to humanity. It had been so long since she'd been on a job. "I'm a good bodyguard? And I'm fast and I can sneak really well. And I can shoot stuff."

"He likes horses?"

"Well now. That's an impressive resume." Sophie smiled as she nodded, and offered a noncommittal shrug. "I can't make any promises.. like I said, we've not been doing much in the way of work lately. But should we ever end out little vacation, I'll definitely bring it up to the team. Sound fair?"

Sophie grinned, perhaps too amused at someone so obviously keen on Eliot. "And yes, he does."

Tach smiled, happy enough with that decision. She nodded. "How do you guys usually get jobs? Maybe I can help you find one."

"I like animals," Tach said, bouncing a little in her seat. She'd finished her ice cream. "I have some at my house. Horses are neat, but I don't have any of those."

"I'm not sure a horse is really a suitable in-house sort of animal, so it's probably best you don't have one." She grinned. "I've no idea as to his preference of other animals."

Sophie thought a moment about how they found people who needed, and shook her head lightly. "They tend to come to us. Nathan is the one who picks jobs. And a bit of the reason for our current hiatus."

"I have a pretty big yard," she said, nodding sagely. She lived next door to Wayne Manor, and her estate was about the same size. "It might be big enough for a horse. But it would need somewhere to sleep at night."

She tilted her head a little, concern wrinkling her brow. "Is he okay?" She hadn't met Nathan yet.

She nodded. "Yeah, I bet he knows a lot about barns, huh? If he likes horses." She tilted her head in confusion at Sophie's words. "Why would he think you're meddling if he's the one helping me pick out the barn?"

Tach hmm'd thoughtfully and nodded, as if she were being given some very sage advice. "People are complicated!" She usually did well enough without worrying too much about what everyone was thinking or what upset certain people and not others. People usually assumed that Tach wasn't trying to hurt them and tended to forgive her when she crossed lines she didn't know about.

"Some more than others, sweetie." Sophie just grinned, not bothering to hide her amusement at the whole conversation. Eliot, it seemed, was in for quite the companion, however it played out. As far as she was concerned, though, it could only do him good - She wasn't sure how anyone could stay brooding and tense near Tach, and if anyone needed to loosen up a bit, it was him.
