Who: Rose and Gar... of the future
What: Waking up together
Where: Gar's place

Rose was woken by the faint wail of an ambulance in the distance, and not by Gar's loud snoring in her ear. In the moments before consciousness fully returned, there was a peaceful early morning haze that filled the room. Not even his snoring could break it. Rose stretched languidly and forgot that it'd been decades since she'd last done this. For a few minutes, it didn't ache to be in the past. Later on, Rose would appreciate this the most.

Inhaling deeply, she shifted closer to him, gently laying the side of her face across his bare chest. Slowly, she opened her eyes and took in the sight of an old, familiar room and green skin that she'd thought she'd never see again. She smiled a small smile and ignored the voice in the back of her head that told her this wouldn't last.

Before her thoughts could grow too dark, Rose raised a hand and let it trail across Gar's stomach. Her nails barely grazed the skin there. If she remembered his ticklish spots right, he'd wake up laughing. She waited, breathing silently.

Gar snorted a bit and squirmed as Rose reacquainted her fingertips with his body. "Heh," he muttered, not yet awake. Then familiarity seemed to flood in Rose's hands and Gar started to laugh, jolting himself out of sleep. He sat up, confused, and looked around dumbly before focusing on Rose. "Huh?" he said with all the eloquence he could muster before noon.

He shook himself out of his daze. "You're still here." He replayed the words in his mind. "I didn't mean that. I meant to say... well, no, I was right the first time. You're never still here." At best he got a vision of her getting dressed through half-lidded eyes and a semi-sincere apology that she wasn't ready for a real relationship. Confronted with both fear and hope, Gar wasn't ready to make a choice and avoided both: "Did I rock your world so thoroughly that you can't feel your legs?"

She hadn't really expected that response and it hurt a bit that he seemed surprised. The fleeting emotion in his eyes was enough to make old guilt gnaw its way through her stomach. But then, she supposed, she deserved it. Rose had a stupid young woman who'd kept aloof for far longer than necessary. If she'd been more willing to commit, things might have been different. Gar might not have...

She stopped herself from thinking the words. Gar wasn't dead now and that was what counted.

"I..." She breathed out a quiet laugh and tried very hard to not look at him as though he'd been dead to her for decades. "Morning, Gar." Sitting back and not really caring that she was naked, she sighed. "It's the bed," she said after a moment of awkward silence, "I really like your bed. It's comfortable."

Hope. He chose hope. "Morning, Rosie." He leaned down and kissed her as if it hadn't been half a decade since he could rely on her appearing in his bed. "So you're a century and some change, and you still dye your hair. I don't blame you. I figure when I'm old and gray I'll have to go out and buy the dye. Or maybe I'll let myself go silver, you know. Classy. Sean Connery pulls it off, and bitches love Sean Connery."

Before saying, "bitches," Gar shapeshifted into a dog. It was an old joke, but a classic. He nudged her with his muzzle. "Bitches, see. Do bitches still love Sean Connery in your distant, presumably dystopian future?"

It was thanks largely to the fact that she'd been a leader for a few decades - that she needed to remain composed under the worst sort of circumstances - that her face didn't crack. She worked through the painful thoughts that his words brought to mind and smiled in spite of herself. "I'm not gray," she said, reaching out and scratching behind one of his ears. "And you won't need the dye. You'll be bald." The mischievous smile on her face was there so that he wouldn't be sure whether she was serious or not. "You'll be very sad about it." She grinned a little brighter.

"And Sean Connery," she laughed a little. "I don't think anyone remembers him. Kids these days have no appreciation for the classics."

"Pah," said Gar, resuming human shape so that he could be adequately outraged. "Kids today with their Daniel Craigs and their Pierce Brosnans. There is but One True Bond. And I will not go bald! You're lying. God willing. Hell, I think I'm starting to grow fur." Gar had decided long ago that if he was to go bald, he would just shave his head, full Patrick Stewart style. It would be a pain in the ass if he had to shave his entire body.

The laughter and silliness died down again and he found himself staring at her. The image of a decade ago turned into less than a week ago flashed in his mind. "You know, a couple of days ago--" he began, but stopped. He tried to fit his mind around the words. "You went off to Australia with Sophie the other day. I mean, the other day by today's standards. Not the other day by my standards, that would just be... I'm babbling." Gar sighed. Why couldn't he have normal ex-girlfriends, the kind that just wandered off into the world and was never seen by anyone ever again? "You told me you loved me the other day."

Rose didn't have it in her to tell him that most kids she knew didn't even recognize the name James Bond, so she just smiled. And she managed to smile all through what he had to say. "Was that... this week?" Rose looked thoughtful, closing her eyes a moment to try and better see the scene play out in her head. "I..." she didn't sound entirely sure, "I remember kissing you and saying it and running away." The light laugh that escaped her throat was just barely tinged with sadness. "And you sent me something while I was hiding, didn't you? To let me know you loved me back?" She opened her eyes and looked at him with a question in her eyes, hopeful that he'd confirm that.

"That's how I know. I got really confused when I looked into the trash and found all these boxes from those really bad valentines they sell to kids at the drugstore, but then I... remembered." Gar's brief pause was largely because it hadn't been the boxes that had jogged his memory, but the date. Every year they were together afterwards on that date, without saying why he was doing it, Gar would surprise Rose with flowers or candy or dancing or somesuch.

"But I... loved you too." Another pause. This one was probably quite a bit more obvious.

"I know," she said, voice feather soft. It was difficult, but she was meeting his gaze. "I knew. Back then. You didn't really need to send them. Not that I didn't enjoy them." She smiled but it was tight. This whole thing was bringing up so many old memories. Rose wasn't quite sure she believed in God anymore, but if she did, she wasn't sure if she was happy with Him to have this opportunity or angry about it.

Rose fell silent and sighed quietly. Suddenly, she felt very naked and in order to stop from feeling so vulnerable, she reached out and pulled a sheet up around her. "This is... difficult," her voice was a low whisper, words breathed out. "This whole thing..." She swallowed and fell silent.

Two weeks ago, Gar had been dating a model. A week ago, he'd been single and listening to Rose complain about her latest beau, some human dude that had somehow made the cut. And right now he was counting the freckles on her back and mentally tracing a few new scars she'd acquired in her century of life. But how strange must it have been for Rose? He would almost definitely be dead by the point she was from, unless he shapeshifted into something with really weird longevity.

Gar reached out and put his arm around Rose. "I can't imagine," he admitted. "I know that..." He didn't, really. He didn't know anything, and he was all too aware of it. "I know how I would feel."

She leaned into him, shutting her eyes and inhaling his scent. He didn't smell like anyone else she knew. There were animal scents on his skin. Without even thinking, she planted a soft, rather innocent kiss on his throat. "You smell good," she said, laughing quietly. "And you're shorter than I remember. And I don't know how I feel." Everyone she knew here - save for two people - were dead and had been dead for some time. "I've missed you," she admitted.

And before she could really stop herself, she continued, words bubbling up quickly. "I lead a team. I'm okay. Happy, even. I like what I do." There was a pause. "Normally I'm so much better than this in a stressful situation."

"If you show me anyone who's comfortable being pulled a hundred years into the past and having pillow talk with her dead ex-boyfriend during a time when they're still technically dating... wait, I got confused. Let me start again. It's a weird situation, Rosie. You're supposed to be stressed. Probably." He nuzzled her a bit.

"Huh. Never thought I'd see you superheroing full time. Maybe joining in when there's something scary going on, but never seeking stuff out. I should be proud. Also, when you get back, you should change the name of your team to the Doom Patrol. It's a nice name. You could patrol for doom."

"Doom Patrol, hm?" She smirked. "I'll have to see what everyone else thinks of it." Her hand slid toward his. She laced their fingers together. "It wasn't really something I chose to do. I never wanted to lead, really. I just... someone needed to take over..." She stopped, biting her tongue before she gave away too many details. He didn't need to be burdened with knowledge of what was to come. A silence settled over them and Rose couldn't tell whether it was comfortable or not.

"I hope I'm as mature in a hundred years as you are. You, with your leadership." Yes, Gar had technically led the Teen Titans. And the Doom Patrol. And could even be forced to be serious on occasion, if only because otherwise no one would listen. But he never thought of himself as a leader, just... the guy who says things that people listen to.

There was almost definitely a reason that it wasn't the same thing.

"It's really hard not to ask you questions. I don't know if you'd answer or not. If you'd want to answer or not. Things I want to know about you and your future and about me and... our future." Gar brushed his thumb over her fingers, then brought her hand to his lips.

Rose had once been told that she'd had too much of her mother in her to not lead. She'd always imagined herself to be her father's child, but those Frost-qualities appeared more and more often the older Rose grew. At this very moment, though, in Gar's old bed, she didn't feel especially strong or brave. She felt like a weak kid again. Her stomach fluttered at his kisses. "I want to tell you things," she said, "I really want to. But I shouldn't." She really had no right to let him know how his life had ended. "What if I have awful news for you? Or what if it's good? It takes the surprise out of things. It could... change things." She looked away quickly.

Before she'd knocked on Gar's door, she'd found both of her parents (technically, Wolverine had found her) and she'd spoken to them on the morality issue of changing the past. She'd made a decision sometime after she'd finished the conversation with her mother, but she'd yet to do anything to make things different. There was a part of her that was still unsure whether it was right to reshape the past into something more pleasant.

"You can ask me questions, if you want," she said after a minute. "I'll probably make something up."

"When do I win my first Tony Award? My first Emmy? My second Oscar? I could ask the lottery numbers, but I already have enough money that I can swim in it like Scrooge McDuck." He wondered how sharp her senses were. Could she hear his heartbeat quicken, smell his nervousness? More likely she could tell by his jokes getting progressively lamer the more he held onto his real question.

Gar's voice was a bit more quiet when he asked his next question: "Do you still love me?" Aware of how that sounded, he continued, "Look, after we broke up, I dated. I even fell in love once or twice. I could envision a world where I was happier with someone else than I would have been with you. But it never happened. Maybe it will, but that's not what I'm asking." If Gar had been more introspective, he might have assumed his affection remained because of how rare it was for a person he loved to stick around in his life.

Rose didn't need heightened senses to know something serious was coming. She smiled all the way up to his last question, when her face cracked a little. It seemed a little ridiculous that he even needed to ask; Rose had always loved Gar and this fact had been as clear as day to her since she'd first said it. She'd loved him when they'd broken up, loved him when she'd been with other men, loved him even when he made her angry or upset.

His question touched a nerve more than anything else she'd experienced this morning. It brought old, slightly buried memories to the surface. "Do I..." she stopped, her voice getting thick with emotion and a lump forming in her throat. Her eyes watered and she looked down at the floor, hoping that she'd regain her cool quickly.

"Yes," she said. "Of course I still love you." She looked at him. "Yes."

Gar let out a breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding and kissed her. His hand found its way to her cheek, and as he pulled away, he wiped a tear that had just managed to roll down her face. "That's good news, Rosie. I was worried I'd have to deal with unrequited love, and that's a pain in the ass."

He kissed her again and said in a low voice, "I love you too." Then he poked her in the boob. "Also, I'm glad that you decided to keep these real for the next hundred years or so. They work on some women, but you really look better with a natural look."

Rose would later realize that the strength of her reaction stemmed from the fact that she hadn't ever been able to say goodbye to Gar in her timeline. They hadn't really said goodbye, she didn't get the chance to tell him how she really felt. They'd left things so utterly unfinished. He'd promised he'd be back and then he hadn't ever returned, cut down by a stray bullet. It hadn't been fair. Rose squeezed her eyes shut and exhaled loudly, unable to stop herself from crying a little more. "Shit," she said, voice thick with tears. "Sorry." She laughed as she cried and then kissed him sloppily. Her arms went around his neck and she pulled him nearer, craving the closeness.

When she broke, she said, "I couldn't find anyone who could pull off the operation. And by the time I did, I didn't want it anymore." Gently, she swiped at her eyes. There was a long pause. "Gar, I need you to do something for me."

"Find a surgeon? I could do it, but I really don't want to. I mean, I think Superman's a surgeon or something, but I really like your breasts." It was hard to face emotion head-on. It always had been, but maybe if he'd been more open from the beginning, he would have found this out a long time ago.

Gar took a deep breath then tried again. "Anything, Rosie-doll."

She breathed through her nose and found her voice was stronger when she spoke again. "I don't know if things will change because of this time switch. But I just need you to do this. If, on the morning of," she gave the date, could have given the time if she'd wanted but didn't, "the phone rings, you cannot pick it up." She smiled, but it lacked any humor. "I know that's cryptic, but I can't tell you anything else. Just..." she looked at him, met his eyes in order to make him get how important this was, "You can't pick up that phone, no matter what." She kissed him again because it was hard to keep her mouth off of his. Then she pulled away quickly. "Please do that for me."

"I promise." Whether it was even possible to promise such a thing, Gar wasn't sure. He didn't care. Rose mattered enough to bend the laws of time and space and physics and good manners, if he could work a way into it. "But honestly, ten years from now, I'll probably be living in Hollywood or Paris or some place with famous people, drinking expensive champagnes. No time for phones when I'm drinking expensive champagnes."

Gar did wonder why it mattered, but Rose occupied a part of his brain where he trusted her unconditionally, a part occupied mostly by Teen Titans and Keanu Reeves, who was a dreamboat. "So, you don't know off the top of your head if there's anything I could say to Rose of the Past to get her to think a little more in your vein, eh?"

"Thank you," she nodded. The smiled she smiled this time was a little more real. In one swift movement, she brought his hand to her mouth and kissed the heel. And then, looking thoughtful, she paused. "I'm not sure there is anything you can say or do. I don't remember everything all that well. I just know I was scared. I didn't know how to deal with my immortality and commitment just seemed so..." she scoffed, "From my point of view it's so stupid. But to a younger version of myself, it makes perfect sense."

She looked at Gar. "I've always loved you, you know. Even when I didn't say it or was with someone else."

"I'll try to keep that in mind, too. 'Hey, Rosie, I'm back from the past. You from a hundred years later was there too. She told me to tell you to bang me because your commitment issues are nonsense.' Maybe I'll just go ahead and keep that one to myself." He smirked, too bolstered by Rose's love to be bitter.

"I know this is going to end soon, and it'll just be a dude with a girlfriend too young for him who should really stop trying to turn his green balls blue, but if I knew for sure we were going to be here tomorrow, I'd probably ask you to marry me right now."

"Gar..." Rose's voice was thin and low. She had things to say, but she just couldn't bring herself to say them. It would be a miracle if her throat would even work for her with the lump forming there. Marrying Gar had been the sort of thing she'd dreamed about once she'd lost him. To have him there with her now and almost have the chance was just a little too much to process. Vision blurred by fresh tears, Rose slid forward, into his lap.

When she kissed him this time, it was quite like the sort of kisses she'd given him the night before. There was ravenous hunger for him that showed in the desperate way she held onto him, how her mouth molded against his. Last night, her kisses had been faster. Now, she was slow and thorough.

I guess that would have been a yes, he thought, smiling against Rose's lips. He was tempted to make some wry comment, but years of study had given him a deep understanding of Rose. The way her fingers gripped him, the subtle grinding against him, even the smell in the air made verbal communication crude and inutile compared to what their bodies were already telling each other.

Rose had been, perhaps, less familiar with Gar's body the night before, and Gar had been distracted somewhat by the new scars and marks that her lifetime had inflicted upon her. But now, they moved without thinking, familiarity and passion and love blending into their movements. Gar's fingers tangled in Rose's hair, Rose's fingernails bit deep into Gar's shoulder.

They would probably find excuses to stay in bed all day, taking advantage of a second chance long overdue. But right now, there was no "all day." There was no later. There was only Gar and Rose and the groaning protest of a mattress used to only one body in it.
