Who: Malakai and Oz
What: Meetings, discussion, scoping out sites for cages. Seriously.
When/Where: This evening, Oz's apartment in NYC
Warnings: S for Snark? None, I assume.

True to his word, Malakai was able to make it to the city within the half hour, the portkey dropping him a couple blocks from where Oz had said do meet. Having come from the dead of night, in London, he found himself having to dig out his sunglasses to protect his eyes from the dusk.

Hands firmly fisted in his pockets, he managed to keep his resolve against attacking anyone, even as the hustle and bustle of people moving around him began to wear on his nerves. The few stops he had to make to contain himself did put him slightly past the 30 minute mark, but not obnoxiously so, as he made quick work of the stairs in the building, to land at Oz's door.

He knocked, leaning against the door jamb to wait patiently; it was equal parts good manners, and an inability to enter the apartment without permission.

Oz answered the door after a moment's wait. He'd pulled on a coat from the closet (which, despite the fact that he'd never seen it before fit him perfectly, which he found somewhat creepy) and was ready to go by the time he got there. "Hey," he said. "Nice to meet you in person."

He slipped outside, apparently not noticing that he hadn't been able to get in anyway. He locked the door behind him. "Got a destination in mind?"

The accent when he spoke was thick, almost clichè Romanian. "I know of a few old farms upstate, at least one of which I'm sure is shut down." The houses would give him somewhere to stay, and the farmland was expansive enough for him to be able to run for a while, and not meet anyone. Maybe not a whole night, but long enough for Kai to find him, with the proper precautions involved.

Pulling his own coat more tightly around himself, he nodded once, letting Oz lead the way out of the building.

He took the stairs down, buttoning his coat as he walked. "I talked to Bill," he said. "He gave me a charm, as well as some pills. He said they'd help...but I'm not sure how they're going to work."

Malakai shrugged, moving to open the door and lead the pair of them out onto the street. The sun had started to set, but wasn't all the way there yet, and he had to adjust the shades over his eyes, to block out the light.

"If Bill made it for you, it will work." Seeing as the boy had been truthful to him, he saw no reason not to be himself; a hand moved to pry under the neck of his coat, pulling out a talisman akin to the one Oz had. "Keeps me safe from the effects of the sun." He was pretty sure his witch could have made something similar, but it had never crossed his mind to ask, until this place. In any case, he was grateful for it, tucking it carefully back into his shirt.

"I should warn you, I walked here," Well, after the portkey and a bit of a run. But the point was, he had no car.

((How are we formatting this? XD))

"I definitely hope so," he said with a nod. His own talisman was hanging around his neck beneath his shirt. It felt a bit warm against his skin, as though a gentle heat emanated from the stone itself. It was slightly unnerving, but comforting at the same time.

"It's fine," he said with a shrug. "There's a car in the garage we can use. I haven't tried it yet...I miss my van," he added, a bit forlorn.

((I get confused, 'kay?! :P I'm fine with straight down, if you don't mind not getting the 'reply to your comment' notifs. Too many people do it different D: ))

"He is a good man. More of a man, than any vampire I have met. You just must trust him, yes?" He nodded, then again at the news about the car, before making a little face at the mention of a van. "Does it make a difference somehow? I never learned to drive."

((I actually prefer it that way so I can keep track. So down it is!))

"I do," he said, sticking his hands into his pockets. The problem was that he didn't trust himself, or that his condition operated on predictable lines.

"Of course it makes a difference," he said, taken aback. "A van is a van and a car...is a car." He didn't quite know how to explain it, but they had such different feels. "I mean, you drive a van across the country. You drive a car to the grocery store."

He kept heading down until he got to the basement level, which opened out to a parking garage. He held the door for Malakai, pointing at a brand new compact on the other side of the mostly-deserted garage. "See?"

Malakai gave the car a look comperable to what he might give a piece of abstract art. He knew there was supposed to be more to it... but he didn't know what that was. "I suppose I do." Only, really not.

He made his way over to the car in question, walking to the passenger side and waiting for it to be unlocked. "If the farm is not there, I may have to improvise, but we have a bit of time yet, yes?" He glanced to the horizon, where the sun was just dipping under the 'ceiling' of the garage.

Oz glanced up. He was trying not to think about it, but he'd been conscious of where the sun was in the sky since he'd walked out the apartment door. "Yeah. Some time."

He unlocked the door and got in, waiting for Malakai to slide into the passenger seat. Then he pulled smoothly away, out the garage doors and onto the street. "So...how far am I going?" he asked, turning to head out of town.

He made a little face at the glance. "I am sorry, I thought you could... tell. With the amulet, I no longer feel the sun, at all. I've lost the sense,"

The question made him make a little face, seeming to think pretty hard. "Er. Twenty kilometers north of here? I do not remember how far, miles. It is about ten minutes away, give or take."

"I can. Sort of," he said, looking up again, unable to help it. "I just try not to think about it too much." They had plenty of time to get where they needed to go, he figured. He was just busy being quietly paranoid, his fertile imagination running wild with the idea of him changing while driving. Not good. On the surface, however, he was as calm and easy of manner as he always was.

He smiled slightly. "I'll figure it out," he said. It couldn't be too far. Could it? Probably not.

"It is not far. There is no need to worry," He was not a mind-reader by rights, but he could sense anxiety, and it wasn't a far leap to connect the dots, with his words. He decided to try and change the subject... even if he had very little talent, where small-talk was concerned. Coming up with nothing, he made a face, going with the first thing that did pop up.

"Did you look into who you replaced, here? I do not remember you saying."

"A guitarist for some band I've never heard of," he said, glad of the change in topic. "I play guitar, so I guess it makes sense. And they're sort of famous, from what I've been hearing. Could be worse. What about you?"

Kai shrugged. "Someone rich. I'm assuming some sort of illegal enterprise. Not that I'm against the idea, but... my contacts, they're not the same here."

That, unfortunately, was the extent of Malakai's ability for smalltalk, and he settled for watching the scenery, waiting for something to look familiar.

Oz was fine with a quiet ride. He didn't do very well with small-talk himself, so he was happy to drive in silence. He had never been the type to feel uncomfortable with quiet.

He drove out of the city and into the country. Houses thinned out, becoming smaller and further apart. "Did you have a particular one in mind?" he asked, a good half hour further into the drive.

He started, having started to doze thanks to the lull in the car, looking over at Oz blearily. "Something not inhabited, obviously. It is still a few kilometers," He rolled down the window a crack, figuring they- or at least, he- would be able to smell the lack of humans so they would know when to stop.

Oz knew he'd be able to tell when there was no one around for miles, but he'd wanted to make sure that Malakai didn't have a destination in mind. Who knew? Maybe he had a fondness for abandoned farms.

He glanced up at the sun again. They were still a good half hour from sunset, so they had plenty of time.

He fixed his eyes on the road. Plenty of time.

Malakai had started to doze again; without the effort of running (or, more accurately, being chased), farmland was unsurprisingly bland. He wasn't worried about the trip, knowing he'd sense Oz changing long before things became dangerous. And considering there was only one road for him to drive down, it wasn't as if he could get lost.

Eventually, the air cleared of any sort of human scent. There was Malakai (something slightly musty and sweet, cloves, sharpness like ginger) and there was grass and clean air. Nothing else.

He pulled over next to a farmhouse that had clearly seen much better days, parking alongside the discolored siding. It stood by itself in the middle of a vast field, partially covered in snow. It was isolated, it was remote, and it couldn't be more perfect.

He got out of the car and locked it behind him, checking briefly to be sure the pills Bill had given him were still in his pocket. "Seems far enough away from everything," he observed.

Malakai started as the car rolled to a stop, looking around with the air of one just waking up. Ever since he had become diurnal, his sleep schedule had been even more insane, and he just tried to take it where he could. Seeing they were at their destination, he lumbered out of the car, stretching his legs out.

"Ah. This will do, yes." He didn't recognize the house itself, but the area was devoid of humans, and the house looked like he could inhabit it for the days, if he had to.

Oz walked up the front steps and nudged the door open. There were a few pieces of decaying furniture, but the house had clearly been abandoned for years. Stairs led upward to more rooms, but he didn't bother with those, walking instead into the living room. Those windows that were not boarded up had an excellent view of the western sky. Perfect.

He pulled the pills out of his pocket, eyed them for a second, then swallowed them dry one after another. They weren't coated so the taste was strong and made him wince, but he got them down, which was key.

He shed his coat. "At least it's not falling apart," he said.

Following after the boy, he gave a look around the house, judging exits, structural stability, paranoid little habits that kicked in when he was so far removed from society. Still, everything checked out, which allowed him to relax after a minute, moving inside to drop down onto a couch (the smell was considerable, but who was he to judge the scent of decay?)

The pills earned a wary eye, before he remembered what Oz had said, about Bill's help. "The suppressant?" He hoped it wasn't some sort of drug- it would likely just make the wolf jittery, he figured.

He turned around. "Yeah. Bill said it would help." Full of herbs, a pinch of silver, and anything else that might keep the wolf down. No wonder they'd tasted so off.

He sat down on the floor, watching the sun out the window. "Not long now," he said quietly. He was just glad they'd made it there with time to spare. next time he'd remember not to cut it so close.

Malakai nodded. "Then it should, I hope. Do not worry, I have fought larger beasts than you, and won," It was probably unhelpful, and even more likely to not amuse Oz at all. But he felt the urge to say something and that was as close to comforting as he could get.

"Just relax. They say it hurts less, that way."

It did make him smile faintly. "Yeah, I get it, I'm short," he said, his tension easing a little.

"I've done this before," he said, glancing up at him. "I'll be alright. I just don't know what the pills are going to do. Or the charm."

He had his eyes on the sky, now. Time was nearly up.

"You're young. There's no shame in that," Malakai had started to pull out his smokes, out of habit as well as to give his hands something to do. He lit the cigarette and took a puff, watching Oz with a well-disguised anticipation.

He'd only seen the transformation a few times in his life, and never on a wolf so young. He couldn't really say he knew what was about to happen.

He shut his eyes to keep himself from fixating too much on the moon when it did come into view. The sun dipped below the horizon, and he sat with his head down and his fingers toying with the charm around his neck.

He could feel the pull of the moon even before it started rising over the horizon. He tried to meditate and be calm, focus on the purely present moment. The sky would be darkening about now, and the stars beginning to come out. He could smell the stench of a hundred different chemicals in Malakai's cigarette smoke, as well as that pungent, slightly bitter scent laced with death that his body gave off. The house itself had a gentle scent of decay and the animals that had passed through it.

His senses ramped up another notch as the moon pulled harder. He squeezed his eyes shut a little tighter. There was a family of squirrels rustling in the basement, an owl winging its way past somewhere overhead.

He could feel the charm beneath his fingers warming slightly as he rolled it between his fingers. It sent waves of soothing energy from the tips of his fingers into his chest, cold tendrils that wrapped around and quieted the pacing wolf that wanted more and more to be out. H tried to focus on that, the soothing sensation, and not the pacing.

Malakai sat deathly perfectly still, as he watched Oz seem to resist the change. It didn't seem pained, but focused- one of Bill's products, no doubt. He knew better than to interrupt such magics at work, and would stay just as he was, cigarette ashing in his hand, until Oz made a move one way or the other.

The wolf kept circling about, searching for a chink in his armor. It was hard not to think about, to worry about. And when he started to worry was when he started to unravel.

He lasted a good ten minutes while the moon slowly cleared the horizon, longer than he'd ever stayed human during the moon. As soon as he thought about this, he wondered how long it could last, began noticing how strongly the wolf was pushing. The soothing pulse of the charm started to fade, and suddenly his focus wasn't enough. Shit.

He felt the claws beneath his skin first, and as they began sliding out he knew he'd lost this one. It took longer than usual--like because of the suppressants. His pupils widened to cover his irises, making his eyes completely black. He just managed to get the charm over his head when the change took over completely and his conscious mind slipped under.

Bones shifted and popped under his skin as heavier, sharper teeth pressed into his tongue. He tore his clothes off mindlessly, partially shredding them in the process. A few seconds later and he was all wolf, facing down Malakai with a dangerous look. Assessing. Prey, predator, or something better left alone?

Having lived as something akin to an animal for much of his existence, Malakai was skilled at expressing himself nonverbally, back straightening, eyes staring down the wolf as he took a very deliberate pull from his cigarette. No move forward kept him from being seen as a threat, but he wasn't going to back down and run. Humans were stupid, in that regard.

He could tell by the absent look on Oz's face there was no trace of human left, but he didn't let that worry him; the one thing mortals did get right, was that animals sensed that sort of weakness. Instead, he just stared and smoked, waiting for the wolf to reach its conclusion.

Malakai smelled off to the wolf, a bit like rot and not at all appetizing. Nor was he backing down or making any sort of threatening movements. So after another moment or two it began moving away, pacing off toward the rear of the house, investigating its surroundings.

It couldn't smell anything human or warm blooded anywhere nearby, and decided to see if it could find something further away. It leapt out the window and into the field, running out as far as it could. There had to be something, somewhere.

Before the wolf would have the chance to make it to the next inhabited farmhouse, a rock would be launched in its direction, a breathy sort of shout following after it. If the wolf stopped, it would find another rock flying at it (from a reasonably safe distance) as a reward, Malakai's attempt to keep the danger directed at him.

The wolf rounded on Malakai, growling its discontent, only to be smacked by the rock. He'd just elevated himself to the level of threat...or annoyance, more, but the wolf was now determined to see him dead, even if he did smell strange. It gave chase with every intention of tearing him apart when it got close enough.

Malakai was able to keep away from the wolf- he was faster than the average human, and rested enough to keep at it as long as he had to. Still, he didn't want to get too far ahead and have the wolf give up.

Unfortunately for him, he'd miscalculated just how annoyed the animal would be from the rock, and a stumble had him well within range of the snarling beast. He cursed as he pulled himself back to his feet, trying to avoid the confrontation.

The wolf gave chase with boundless energy and inhuman speed. It lashed out, attempting to get at his legs, get him to the ground so that it could get down to the business of tearing open the soft, vulnerable parts of his body. The stumble was enough to get him just within reach,

Kai's leg was caught by the wolf, and he cursed as he felt the skin tear when he was pulled down. His free leg swung around to try and knock the wolf off, although it took a few lashes to get himself free. Thankfully, he'd suffered worse, and was on his feet and off towards the house again in seconds, barely slower for the wound in his leg.

It took the wolf a moment or two to recover from being knocked away, then it turned and swung its momentum around, following after Kai as he headed back toward the house. The wolf could smell his strange blood in the air and chased the maddening, off scent.
