A new AI? In a new, updated car? While he had to admit to an almost overwhelming curiosity, he also felt the slight twinge of irritation that could only come when one is faced with their own replacement.

For that's what this car represented. New technology. New breakthroughs. New beginnings. To replace what was outdated, worn, old.

He sighed, brushing the thoughts away with a swipe of his hand down his face. He was tired, overworked and overstressed. It was making him cranky. So maybe there was a hint of smoldering jealousy burning underneath his calm exterior. He'd deal with it. It wasn't important. What was important was making sure that the car arrived without suffering any mishaps along the way. Kitt suspected - no, he knew - that this sort of technology could be very dangerous in the wrong hands, and he was intent on making sure that this AI remained safely in the care of Knight Industries - even if it wasn't quite the same Knight Industries that the AI recognized.

He went out into the chilly evening air dressed in business casual, projecting what he hoped would be just enough authority without seeming overbearing. Arms folded over his chest, he stood in the driveway before the front staircase, waiting for its arrival.

"I am present, Mrs. Jackson-Knight," the car replies evenly, perhaps as his predecessor had feared.

The Mustang's engine cuts out as a matter of safety, being in an enclosed space, but his lights remain on; though the hood display has vanished. "I am not impatient. I am content to answer whatever inquiries you may have of me, as I have the impression, from your voice patterns, that you are wary of my presence, or perhaps somewhat threatened by it."

Hattie had entered just before Kitt has said where they were, entering her own passkey on the pad outside. As the door swung shut, she heard the car respond and she couldn't stop the smile. "Thanks, um. KITT. I meant my-" She exhaled and tilted her head. "You need a different name."

She was still nervous, but probably not as threatened as Kitt was. She moved to the bench he was leaning against, shrugged out of the coat she didn't need and sat, crossing one leg over the other. "I have a question: what year are you from?"

That was a good question. Maybe not the one he'd ask first, but it was a good solid start. He looked at the car expectantly, waiting for an answer. Its presumption that he might possibly feel threatened hadn't sat well with him, and he didn't trust himself to speak just yet. Sometimes diplomacy meant knowing when to, as Michael had often told him, 'shut up'.

"I did not mean to cause confusion. Perhaps a temporary 'nickname' would be appropriate. Humans I have observed have a tendency towards wordplay. I can select a few candidates while we talk."

The car dims its headlights, since they are superfluous to the lights within the building. "My programming was first initiated at 01:15:23AM on the 21st of March of the year two-thousand-eight. That would be the date you could say I attained awareness. I was installed in my current housing eight days after that date, on the 29th of that month. My first mission with Michael was one month after that."

"Michael?!"

Hattie probably shouldn't have been allowed to sit in for this little interrogation, mostly because she wasn't going to be able to hold in her questions. She gave Kitt another apologetic look. "So, 2008. That's recent enough. We've been here since before then," she offered.

That made Kitt sit up and take notice, suddenly and swiftly. He held up a hand to silence anything further that Hattie might have to say, more brusquely than he would have liked, but this was important.

"Michael?" He was leaning forward without realizing it, caught himself doing so and leaned back again, straightening his tie, trying to regain his air of aloof decorum.

"Not much long before then, though." He didn't want to make it seem that they had been out of the loop for that long.

He shook his head, needing to regroup, then pinched the bridge of his nose. "Tell me about Michael first. Then Dr. Graiman, and why you were created. Then about your specs." He wondered if there was anything of his technology incorporated into this newer model. Not physically, perhaps, but if any of his innovations had survived to be carried over after 26 years.
