"There's a lot I don't know." Ilya shook his head. He scrubbed his face with both hands. "I haven't deliberately kept anything from you." He tried for a smile, though it failed and didn't reach his eyes. "I told you when we first met I believe my father is a vampire. I didn't tell you that being a Damphir means I need to drink blood from time to time. I don't have fangs, I can't bite people the way vampires do. I don't even drink human blood. I had no idea, until tonight, that I have control over fire. Damphirs are traditionally weak, very few live to see the first year complete. I can only assume my mother's gypsy blood is what made me strong."
