Who: Superman and Lois, probably NPC's
What: After Superman defeats Apocalypse here
When: Later tonight
Warnings: None I can think of

The televisions in the newsroom were tuned to every imaginable network still broadcasting. Most of them were airing the same reports and warnings about what areas in the world had taken the most damage and where to stay away from. Lois glanced up every minute or two to look for for news on Superman. She knew the phantom zone projector was completed, she knew Superman was looking for Apocalypse, and she knew it was happening soon.

And then a familiar voice coming off one of the televisions caught her ear. She jumped out of her seat and nearly ran to the right television that was airing an international station. There was Superman, delivering and receiving blows with Apocalypse in a ferocious battle. She was joined by co-workers as every television was switched to the same station and they stood and watched, holding their breaths. Silence filled the newsroom as everyone tensed up.

Lois knew from years of watching him that Superman was beginning to tire. But she knew he could do it, he had to. He wouldn't let up. They watched as Superman activated some sort of field, which slowly trapped the mutant, then the reporter announced that Superman had defeated Apocalypse. Early cheers that went up around the newsroom were cut short when everyone watched in horror as Superman was hit by the beam and fell into the sea.

Lois was already on her way out the door as Superman hit the water, heading for the portkey to take her to New York. Her heart was thundering in her chest. She wouldn't rest until they found Superman. She couldn't lose him, not here, not again. Why did she have to be so far away?

It seemed to take forever to get to New York, and even longer to get to the shoreline where crowds had gathered to watch the final battle. From what people were saying, Superman hadn't been seen yet. Lois fought her way through the crowd, muttering excuses and calling out Superman's name. She'd join the search effort, she'd get on one of those news helicopters or a search plane or a boat until he was found. Lois fought her way amongst the heavy crowd at the shoreline, headed towards a Coast Guard vehicle at a small pier. "Excuse me, sir? Sir!" she called to an officer.

"I didn't know you were such an expert on ninjas, Clark. We should've tapped that resource and done a ninja expose at the Planet." It was said dryly with Lois' usual attitude, but she was very amused as well.

Lois grit her teeth and willed herself to not react as his leg brushed against hers. Clark was doing this on purpose. He knew she was having a hard time. He seemed to know everything. He knew she'd been in love with Superman. All the feelings she had for him were quickly coming back, more quickly than she'd thought they'd might. She was still scared, though. Scared she'd lose him and have to get over him for the third time.

"Yes, I did. Did you get some sun?" she asked in concern. It seemed he had, but she wanted to be sure.

"A little. I'll head back out for more, and to start helping with reconstruction later. Seems like a good thing to do, I think."

He nodded, eating slowly. He wondered what was going on in her head, and if he dared ask. He was afraid, and unsure, and all he knew was being Superman, and Clark. If one was taken, was all that was left to him Superman?

Lois checked the clock on the wall. "I should head into the paper later." She didn't mention how much later or that part of her was tempted to stay here with him. "We want to make sure people know where shelters are and resources to help them rebuild, now that the dust has settled." Lois smiled warmly, aware she was sitting next to the man who'd saved the world. She was honored to know him.

"You're free to stay here as long as you'd like. Rest and make sure you get enough sun." She placed her hand lightly on his arm for a minute, using her other hand to eat. Comfortably, naturally, her leg brushed back up against his. She wasn't sure whether she'd meant to do that or not.

He smiled at that.

"I am surprised you aren't there already.."

He cock his head at her, listening.

"Makes sense. I am sure more shelters and supply centers will be opened as are needed."

He smiled at her again.

"I will just rest some, and get out to help. Still a lot to do before this is all over, you know?"

Her leg touching his made one eyebrow twitch and he stifled a mmm-reaction. She still got to him... what would she do, or want, now that she knew what he had stolen from her? he didn't know, and he had no idea what to do.

Lois was surprised too, to be honest. "I woke up to find someone in my kitchen making me breakfast. That's not an everyday occurrence. This is really good, by the way."

She nodded, taking her hand off his arm to pick up her coffee. "There is a lot to do. But someone has to be sure you stay here to rest," said with a raised eyebrow, "and I can do some work from home."

Her hand on his arm was gone, it had been meant as a supportive gesture, but she wasn't sure how he had taken it. Her leg was still pretty close to his.

He smiled at her.

"Thank you. I learned how to cook from Mom."

He nodded.

"I will head out a little later, so you can go in as well."

He grinned.

"You have to listen to the sound bites I got you and type them up."

His leg brushed hers, almost of it's own will.

"I wish your parents were here," Lois said in between bites. "I'd love to get to know them better."

She smiled at the thought of the recorder, looking around and wondering where it had ended up. "I'm going to listen to them as soon as we're done, if I can find it."

Lois tried not to react again. But after a second, her leg moved slightly so that it was constantly touching his, just a bit. It would've felt unnatural not to.

He nodded, and smiled sadly.

"Me too. After dad died, mom took it hard, and then I left and came back and... now here I am on another world..."

He smiled at her.

"Thank you, Lois. For being honest, and being you. I have to figure out a lot of things, but I know this. Without you in my life, I would not have made it through this last week."

His eyes held a sudden openness and warmth, and he nodded slowly.

"Wherever your mother is, I'm sure you haven't abandoned her. She might show up here. Your dad, too."

Lois listened quietly to everything and smiled softly at him. She wasn't sure what to say. "I'm glad I could be there for you. I'm... honored that you trust me."

She missed the look in his eyes since she was looking away to clear her throat, perhaps nervously, and sipping again at her coffee.

"Thank you, Lois. That's nice."

He smiled at her and sighed, and then nodded.

Another day.

"Should probably get out there, soon."

"Yeah," she said. She didn't want this moment to end, even though there was a lot of work to be done, she wanted to be selfish for just a little longer. This was why he'd wiped her memory, because he thought it'd been too hard for her to let him go, to share him with the world.

Lois glanced at him, feeling like some moment had just been passed by. She studied his face, wondering what he was thinking and how he was adjusting.

His smile was warm as he nodded to her and poked her gently.

"Ready to face the big world?"

He was ready. This... whatever this was, would have to wait. Again. He care for her so much, and yet, from what little he could see, could feel, it was not time.

It never felt like time.

His smile was lopsided for a moment before it firmed and gained confidence.

"Thank you."

"Are you?" she replied, an eyebrow raised slightly in challenge. "And if you keep poking me I'm going to start getting ideas."

She frowned a little. "For what?"

"Yes. Always."

And he raised his eyebrows, and a small grin appeared.

"Going to get ideas? Ah, Lois."

He smiled.

"For being you, for being here, and there, when I needed you. Thank you."

He had finished his food and slid his chair back a little, but did not move more.

Lois smiled widely, taking another bite of eggs.

"You're welcome, Clark... Superman... both of you," she finished, not sure who was thanking her. This was a little confusing, but they'd figure it out.

She watched him, debating with herself. He was about to get up, they would both go to work, and who knew when the next time was she'd have a chance to talk to him. "Can I... ask what you're thinking?"

His lips twitched as she switched between names like that.

"Just call me Clark, Lois. Here, anyway."

Then he smiled, confused. What he was thinking? Wasn't that a huge list...

"About what?"

She smiled and nodded, but seemed to be speechless to answer his question.

"About... Me. I mean. You and me, us. I'm getting... different signals from you. Maybe we should talk when all this is over. When there's time." She understood now wasn't the best time, and he was still adjusting. But it felt like if they didn't get it out in the open now, it would be a very very long time before either of them brought it up.

He nodded, slowly. It was a good idea. And as much as he was scared of it, he was sure it was right.

"I think you are right."

His eyes went distant.

"How about one week from today, six PM, at that restaurant down the street? They have a nice secluded table area, where we can talk, and work things out."

His eyed searched hers as he worried, and hoped. One week. Surely northing would happen in a week.

She was suddenly terrified. Lois wasn't sure what she'd just done. She wasn't sure it had been the right thing to do. She wasn't sure what the right thing was anymore. All she knew was that she couldn't pretend him kissing her cheek or letting their legs brush together wasn't affecting her.

"I didn't plan on this," she said with a short laugh. "I thought I'd need a lot of time before I could even give this some thought." She met his eyes. "Next week. I'll be there."

He watched her, feeling his own trepidation. Was he ready? Could he afford not to be? He blew out a breath and nodded.

"Then I had best get moving. There is a lot of work to be done. Got to make sure people are okay. Talk to you later, Lois."

He stood and smiled at her, then moved toward the front door.

She wasn't sure either of them were ready. But they'd never discussed the events of those few days he'd wiped from her memory.

It seemed like he was leaving so quickly, Lois was a little startled. "Don't be a stranger, Clark," she finally said as he was leaving, offering him a small, soft smile.
