Who: Doc Scurlock and Mary Shannon
What: Meeting, helping him adjust
When: Today
Where: Somewhere in New York
Warnings: TBD

After Mary told Doc that she'd be out to find him, she grabbed up whatever she needed and headed out of her apartment. It was much different then where she used to live, and more importantly, much quieter. With no mother and no sister to constantly get her into trouble, and even no Marshall, she had found herself out of sync with everything.

At the very least now she could help out this guy out, after all she was a US Marshal. So she headed down to where he said he was and looked around for a guy totally out of place with everything around him.

Doc shifted where he stood, adjusting his duster, moving his hat in his hands. He looked around, hoping to see the woman he had been speaking to. His blue eyes scanned the area, taking in all the sights and sounds.

He knew he looked out of place here. Western garb in a place where women were scantily dressed? Even more so then the saloon girls he was used to seeing.

And there he was, looking like he stepped straight out of a Western. Huh. She wandered over in her jeans and tank top and gave a wave, "Hey. I'm Mary.. it's nice to meet you.. Doc.." in a way, she felt a bit at ease helping him because she relocated people all the time.

Just not usually out of time periods different from her own.

Doc turned and smiled when he saw her. She wasn't what he expected. More beautiful than he envisioned when they were talking. Definitely a case of a picture not doing a person justice.

"Hi, Mary. I'm Doc," he said, tugging his glove off his hand and extending it to her.

Mary smiled back, as rare as it was for her to smile. She was going to at least try and not seem like a total douche bag. She shook his hand and grinned slightly. "Well Doc.. looks like you've umm.. got a lot to catch up on.. god where to start. Where did you live before?"

"Lincoln County, New Mexico," Doc said. "Though I was preparing to move out east with the girl I was goin' to marry. Guess she didn't show up."

He looked around, frowning some at the things he saw. "Guess catching up on things is puttin' it mildly. This is... quite a lot to take in."

She blinked a bit, "New Mexico? Oh that's great! I mean I know about New Mexico. I'm from New Mexico.. or I was before I got here. Albuquerque to be .. y'know.. exact but.." she trailed off.

"My.. partner .. uh.. my work partner didnt show up either. No one I know is here. Sometimes I heard they show up, but .. not so far.." Ah right, explaining things. "So.. after the Civil War.. um.. people.. pretty much got their shit together but generally.. most things are the same.. just.. technology is different? Uh.. that thing you were looking at? It's called a computer. Basically it's like.. mechanics.. really fucking smart people used lots of ... complicated .. math to make it. It does things for you.. like lets you talk to people all over."

He nodded. "Yeah, I heard of Albuquerque. Been there a time or two," he said. He shifted to his other foot, watching her.

"Computer...? How'd someone come up with a name like that?" he asked. He shook his head before speaking. "So nothin' really changes over 150 years?" He jumped as a nearby car alarm started going off.

"What the hell's that!?"

Mary scratched at her head, "I.. don't know how they came up with the name actually. I guess cause it does computations? Like math problems? Computers used to be huge, but now everyone has tiny ones. And they're almost all connected to this.. thing called the internet.. uh.."

This was harder then she thought. "A guy not too far after you were.. where you were made this thing called the telephone? Where instead of writing a letter, you used electricity to.." shit did he even know about electricity?

"UH.. thats a car.. like a .. mechanical horse. So y'know.. you use that to get around instead of makin your horse all tired?" she was really bad at this.

Doc couldn't help it. A smile started to grow more and more as he watched Mary struggle with telling him about things.

"Maybe we should take this talk elsewhere, or somethin'. I'm gettin' some odd stares. Overdressed or somethin'," Doc admitted, noticing people watching him as they walked by.

"Is there somethin' I could read about all the history?"

Was he grinning at her? Well gee, she actually started to blush some. It was very rare to see Mary at a loss for words and blushing.

"Uh.. yeah yeah. The library. Uh.." she looked around. Hell if she knew where the library was. Well hell, she just needed a computer really.

She glanced over at him and the way he was dressed, "Fuck people if they don't like how you're dressed. Come on, I'll take you back to my place.. I've got a real computer there and I can show you. Way easier then me trying to find a damn library. I mean, y'know if you want."

There was something about her that gave him the impression she wasn't at a loss for words often. Nor that she blushed often, seeing the pink on her cheeks.

"I do. Want. That is... um..." Okay that came out wrong, maybe? "Yes, thank you. That would be most helpful."

She gave a little laugh, "Yeah all right.. my car's over here. I know it's a little weird but really you just sit and I'll drive and. Yeah.."

Going around the block, she spotted her car, which had a ticket on it. "For fuck's sake.. stupid cops.. I hate cops.. y'know, except that I am one."

"Cop... is that like a sheriff?" Doc asked, keeping in step with her as they went. "And what's that paper for anyways?"

He studied the machine, his head tilting as he looked. This was so new to him, but he trusted Mary. Odd since he just met her.

Doc munched without thought on his sandwich as he listened to Mary and devoured the words in front of him. This was amazing to him. So much to learn.

"This is... unbelievable," he vocalized. "Have they done away with books then in favor of this?"

"Not entirely.. some of the geekier.. er... y'know real brainy types would totally raise a fuss if they tried that.. some people still like to read books.. there's shops for them now with nothing but.. and another place you can borrow books and then return them called a library.." Was there libraries back then?

"Yup, public for everyone to read.. most of the world can read now.. except I guess in the really poor countries but here in America, almost everyone," she nodded a bit.

He slowly grinned. "All those books," he murmured in a wistful way. He looked at her. "I'd so love to see it sometime." His eyes were dancing with merriment, just thinking about it.

Mary grinned back, "You like books huh? Well I'll take you there.. soon.." there was one pretty close to where she lived too. "So is all of that making sense so far? Somewhat?"

"Yeah, I like books. Back then, unless you were on the rich side, reading wasn't always available. Hell, some men I knew were lucky if they even knew how to read. Priorities were different and such." He looked back to the computer screen. "Somewhat. It's a lot to take in, to be honest."

She nodded her head a little. "Yeah most people go to school now.. cause.. starting at five you go to public school.. for everyone.. it's free but it's mandatory.. Well if you wanna take a break we could get you some clothes and I can wash those.."

"Clothes.. that'd be good." He scratched his head and frowned. "Wonder if I should cut my hair too. Look more like some of those I saw out on the trail... er... street."

He looked at her, his eyebrow quirking. "What do you think?"

She hm'd a bit, "Well..maybe a little trim.. I kind of like the longer hair though.." well sort of. It depended she supposed on the person. After all, she'd liked her ex boyfriend's new haircut when he had gotten it.

"Clothes definitely though.. uh.. do you want to go now? Y'know.. whenever you're ready.." Mary nodded.

Doc nodded, shifting to set his glass down. When the laptop wobbled, his eyes widened and he caught it with a firm grip. He looked at her, eyes still wide, before speaking.

"S.. sorry." He took a moment to really look at her and what he saw was beautiful. Moreso than Yen Sun. "Uh... yeah we can... go whenever. I am ready now."

Mary blinked a bit and then reached out to grab the laptop too, putting her hand on top of his. "Uh.. it's okay.. let's just uh.. sit this over here.." she took his drink and then put it on the other table far away from the laptop.

Then she took the laptop and shut it down, closing the lid. "Okay.. yeah.. let's go.." she gave a quirky grin and grabbed her keys and headed to the door, waving him to join her.
