Who: Dean Winchester and Bree Dennison.
What: Hanging out at the park.
When: This afternoon.
Warnings: Nope! Zero!

Dean was actually pretty excited to give Bree her gift. He'd put some thought into what a girl her age would like reading, then remembered she was way smarter than girls her age and got her a book that any rad person would like reading, one about all the bugs in Australia. There were glossy illustrations in the pages as well of huge fangs and hairy creatures, and he hoped she'd like it. He'd even had it gift-wrapped.

He was slouched on a park bench, waiting for her parents to drop her off, trying invent new words for his usual cusses.

Bree arrived before too long. James and Lily were with her, and after they'd dropped her off they went off to another park bench a short distance away.

Bree sat down next to Dean. "Hi," she said with a friendly smile. She had a bookbag with her, just in case she'd gotten there before Dean. Her feet dangled from the bench.

Dean grinned and held up a hand for a high-five. "Hey! You ready for your gift?" He grinned and held out the wrapped parcel. "Saw this and thought you might like it." He tried not to look overexcited at the idea of her opening it.

She high-fived him. It was kind of kiddish, but it was cool when Dean did it. "Yeah!" She smiled and nodded, taking the present that he handed to her. She could tell from the package that it was a book. She opened the present, and grinned when she saw it. "Oh! Cool!" She opened it up, looking at the first few pages. "Thanks!"

Dean grinned, all but bouncing excitedly as she opened it. He was glad when she liked it, and pointed out the writing. "They had some kid's guides, but this one's all sciencey and crap. Figured you'd like the cool explanations ans stuff. The bugs there are scary."

Bree grinned. "Yeah, it looks really cool." She would learn some really neat stuff. She didn't know that much about bugs, but that would only make learning even more fun.

"So did you have fun?" she asked, looking back up at him.

Dean nodded enthusiastically. "Yeah, it was awesome. Growing up, me and my brother didn't really get a lot of vacations. We didn't have much money and we moved around a lot anyway. So it was kinda neat to go to a real fancy hotel and just do nothing for a week. I'm sure you'd think it was pretty boring, though. Unless you like swimming. We did that a lot."

Bree smiled, shrugging. "It sounds neat. I haven't gone on a lot of real vacations. I did live in a library once, though." She pointed at one of the pictures of the bugs. "Hey, did you get to see any of these?"

Dean nodded his head. "You should get your aunt and uncle to take you on one sometime. And I bet you liked living in a library. Me, I'd get really bored quick." Though he would've been totally content living in a Chevy factory or something.

He followed her finger and winced. "Dang, that thing looks like a model. Nope, didn't see one. Glad I didn't, I would've screamed."

"I really miss the library. But I like where I live now, too." She shrugged. She would rather go to a library than the beach, most days, but she guessed she could read on a beach. That would be cool.

She giggled. "You hunt ghosts but you would've been scared by that little guy?" Granted, the bug was probably as big as her hand.

Dean nodded to himself, making a mental note that this kid reminded him a lot of Sam in a lot of ways.

"Well, yeah. I mean, bugs shouldn't be that size. Bugs here don't bother me, 'cause they're not the size of rats. And ghosts, I know how to get those." He shrugged. "Mutant evil bug things? No clue."

Bree giggled again. She would probably squeal for Uncle James if she saw anything bigger than a cockroach. Maybe even for one of those. But it was funny to picture Dean screaming and jumping on a chair or something.

"Hey, do you guys fight werewolves?" she asked, looking up at him very seriously and tilting her head.

Dean thought about her question for a few seconds - a lot longer than he thought about much - before speaking. "I'd say we do, but we only go after stuff that hurts other things. I have to remember sometimes that there's a lot of stuff here that's nice that's what we used to hunt. I know some good vampires now. Figure there's good things everywhere, I guess. So, yeah. I'm gonna say we do, but only if they're doing the normal werewolf stuff like eatin' babies and crap. I never used to be like that, though. Where I'm from, about 99 percent of stuff that's supernatural is just bad."

Bree nodded some, thinking. "Yeah, I guess since they have wolfsbane potion most of them don't worry about it that much." She frowned a little. "But even when they do that stuff, they're still human most of the time." She looked down at her book, swinging her legs a little. "My dad was a werewolf."

Dean blinked. "That's - huh. Are you too? Or is it not hereditary?" He didn't know, and it was a point of interest. "As long as they're careful and don't hurt people, I promise I won't go after them." It was probably the unspoken question.

She shook her head. "He's not my biological dad. He moved in with my dad after my parents got divorced." She sat up a little, pulling her feet up on the bench and sitting cross-legged. "Yeah, that makes sense. My dad isn't here now, anyway. But my Uncle Remus and Aunt Ginger and everybody use the potion, so they don't hurt anybody."

Dean nodded. "And that's fine. And even if something happened, I'd just try to catch 'em 'cause I know they're your relatives and they're nice people. Where I'm from, werewolves don't know they're werewolves a lot of the time. Just sort of go nuts at the full moon and wake up when it's daylight with a bad headache." He was glad he hadn't seen any in a long time.

Bree smiled a little and nodded. She wasn't sure how Dean would know they were her friends, but she wasn't that concerned about it happening. They were all careful. "If you catch my dad, make sure to send him back to me," she gave a small smile. She didn't think that was going to happen either. But maybe. She pushed some hair out of her face and looked back down at her book.

He gave her a squeeze on the shoulder. "'Course I will." He looked over at her book, wrinkling her nose. "Dang, why're they so big, anyway? There's got to be some sort of freaky reason."

Bree grinned. "Yeah, look," she pointed at the book and read off the 'freaky' scientific reason of why experts thought the bugs had evolved to be so big. She giggled, making a face. "Gross."

[info]doubleup

He read the reason, blinking. "Who the heck studied this? And how would you prove it anyway? Science is... kind of weird." Fixing cars? Killing stuff that went bump in the night? That all made sense.

"Entomologists," she said, matter-of-factly. "You can't prove it. That's why it's a theory. But they have a lot of evidence to support it." She shrugged. "It makes a lot of sense if you have the right person to explain it."

"Still don't think I'd trust anyone who thinks 'yay bugs, let's do that for a job'. Reminds me too much of this one job Sammy and I did. Indian curse, killer bugs. Totally not fun at all." He shuddered, thinking again of the bee swarm.

She gave him a weird look. "So you wanted to get me this book so I could learn about bugs and freak you out?" She grinned and shrugged. "I meant more scientists and evolution in general. But I'm going to be a writer, anyway." She turned the page to show another weird bug. "Maybe I'll write a scary story about bugs and dedicate it to you."

Dean chuckled. "Sure! Nothing wrong with getting freaked out. I like it when it's not about my work, you know? When it's movies and books and stuff it's just fun."

He liked the idea of a story being dedicated to him, and messed up her hair with a huge hand. It was a fond gesture, and his smile betrayed that. "That'd be awesome, Bree."

Bree grinned. "Yeah, that's true." She read enough Stephen King to know that it was fun to be scared, sometimes.

Then again, sometimes not. Her attention turned to a spot between two trees close to their bench. She was suddenly more serious, and her eyes seemed somehow darker. Dean might have felt it get a little colder. "Stop," she said quietly to the spot.

Dean blinked and sat up straighter. She hadn't been kidding about seeing ghosts. Out of habit, he always had a gun on him, but he really didn't want to fire it in public. "C'mon, let's take a walk." He stood up and held out his hand to her, hoping that her little friend wouldn't follow.

She didn't look that scared, really. The ghost wasn't angry or violent. Bree just didn't like them coming to her in public. She was a little self-conscious about people seeing her when she saw ghosts. They usually were pretty creeped out by it, and sometimes they avoided her after that. Dean wasn't like that, though.

She stood up, reaching for his hand and looking back at the spot. Holding onto Dean, she let herself be led a little before tugging on his arm. "She wants you to help her."

Dean squeezed her hand in a reassuring way until the tug on his arm. "She - well, you're a regular Ghost Whisperer, aren't you?" He was glad for the pistol tucked into the waistband of his jeans, just in case. "Do you know what she wants?" He looked up and offered a sheepish grin toward where he thought the ghost might be. "I - uh. Can't really see you just yet. Sorry."

"I don't think he does that anymore," she whispered to the ghost, looking a little worried. They had left her alone for a while. Maybe she had been too distracted with her own life. She looked up at Dean. "There was somebody bad," she said, the tone of her voice noticeably more child-like than usual. "They hurt her." She pouted, reaching her arms up to Dean in a gesture asking to be picked up.

Dean winced at Bree's description. That wasn't something any kid should have to be subjected to, and nothing Bree should have to hear. He picked her up and wrapped his arms around her, holding her to his chest.

Moving back over to the bench, he looked at the ghost - or at least where he thought it would be. "Is the person who hurt you still a ghost like you?"

Bree shook her head, resting her chin against Dean's shoulder. "No.. She's not a ghost. She's a mean old lady. She's awful." Bree squirmed in Dean's arms.

Then her eyes seemed to return to normal and she went a little limp. Her voice was more familiar now. "She's gone." She took a deep breath, suddenly tired. "You have to stop her. She'll do it again."

Dean pet Bree's hair in what he hoped was a reassuring way. "Do you know anything else about the old lady? When she comes out, what she looks like?" His mind was racing, trying to think of spirits or demons or anything else that looked like old ladies and preyed on kids. Sadly, he could think of a lot.

Bree shook her head. She couldn't get a lot from the ghost's description. "Old. And um... ugly." It wasn't nice to call people ugly, but this lady really fit the bill. "And she flew."

Dean squeezed her a little. Flying narrowed things down. "I'm gonna have to read some books and stuff. Research, make sure I know what it is and how to fight it. But I promise I'll get her, okay?"

It was girls like Bree that made the job what it was.

Bree nodded. "Can I help with the research?" she asked, trying to hold back a yawn. "I've read scary stuff before." She felt like she almost knew what it was. She shifted to rest her cheek on Dean's shoulder.

Dean found himself idly stroking her hair, debating her question. It reminded him too much of Sam asking the same thing when he'd been about thirteen or fourteen, and it made his heart ache in his chest.

"You can, but ... I kind of don't want you to. This scary stuff I'm gonna read - a lot of it's real. And you deserve to be a kid, you know?"

Bree frowned a little. She didn't like it, and she'd still argue a little. But if he told her not to, she wouldn't try to sneak along or anything. Dean wasn't the sort to say 'No' just because. He had a reason, and even if she wouldn't get in trouble, she didn't want to upset him.

"I've seen scary stuff, though," she pointed out. "And I'd be able to recogni--" she was interrupted by a yawn she couldn't hold back. "--ize her if you found pictures." She was mumbling by the end of it, nuzzled against his shoulder.

"How 'bout this. I'll do the long boring narrowing it down part, and when I get some prime suspects, I'll run 'em by you." He chuckled when she yawned and went to sit back down on the bench.

"Okay," Bree murmured, her eyes starting to close. She shifted a little when he sat down, climbing onto his lap and leaning on his shoulder. Her breathing slowed and she faded off to sleep.
