Lulu will show you how it's done. ([info]ultimafury) wrote in [info]utr_logs,

Entry tags:artan stillman, lulu

Who: Lulu and Artan.
What: Getting a tattoo.
When: Last night, after this thread.
Where: Artan's shop.
Warnings: Swearing and needles.

Lulu took a taxi to Artan's shop, a paper printout of the design in her purse. She didn't want to think about how or why it was on the internet to begin with. Instead, she was focused on her goal: to have her memories put into her skin, so she wouldn't forget. Brother being around gave her a bit of hope that other people might arrive, but she didn't want to forget what they'd done in the meantime.

She didn't know much about tattooing, but she'd been sure to wear a t-shirt instead of a corset. Common sense told her that she'd have to lift up her shirt, and she didn't want something too complicated to put back on. She adjusted the black cotton nervously as they approached the shop, leaning forward to pay the driver and exit the cab. Portkeying was a simple convenience that she was quickly growing attached to - how easy and convenient to be able to travel anywhere in a heartbeat! It beat airships any day, though that was something she'd never tell Brother. Skwisgaar had returned to Mini-Mordhaus, so she was able to be out all night without him worrying or even knowing where she'd gone. She wondered how he'd react.

She knocked on the door before trying the knob to the shop, pushing it open. "Hello?"

The shop itself was like many other tattoo shops - it had flash boards lining the walls, a waiting area, a case with various piercing adornments, and a lava light set up by the cash register. The music playing was a cover of a classic rock tune as done by a group of heavy metal musicians. Off in the corner was a dark haired figure nodding his head to the beat as he prepped the area near the tattooist's chair, getting the machine ready, as well as mixing inks to get the colors just right.

Artan Stillman wasn't what you'd call the paragon of societal standard. If anything, he was the antithesis of said. That being said, up walked the short, handsome fellow wearing a sleeveless teeshirt and a pair of dingy denim slacks. He was covered in tattoos, from neck to wrist, at least. "You must be the cool drink of water from the boards. Hi, I'm Artan, come have a seat. I printed out your design, and worked out the price range based on a tattoo about this big." He said, holding up his hands to show it was about seven inches wide. "It'll cost you about four hundred dollars even, take about six and a half hours. Would you like to break it up into sessions or try one long go at it? I'll even schedule a mini-break for lunch or something."

He led her towards the seat, smiling warmly. "So, other than as a memento, what prompted the decision to get some ink?"

Lulu actually sort of liked the music. It was lively, and sort of joyful in its own way. She looked around with some interest, watching the lava light for a few moments before noticing the man in the corner. She waited for him to finish with what he was doing, not wanting to interrupt. She assumed the practice of art on flesh was a difficult one, and she didn't want to disturb him.

When he introduced himself, she chuckled and smiled. The fact he'd already printed out the design and worked out a price impressed her, and she smiled. "That's fine. I'd like to try to do it all at once, if you don't mind. I think I'll be fine for the pain." She was impatient at her core, and didn't know if she'd be able to stand walking around with it unfinished.

She sat down on the seat, taking a moment to put her long hair up, knowing it would get in the way. "They're not common where I'm from, and I've recently met someone who has a great number. They're beautiful, and seem a good way to preserve a moment." A faint blush crept into her cheeks, and she realized she sounded overly sentimental.

Artan smiled as he took a seat on his work stool. "That's a good reason, too. I'll walk you through it, since they're not common where you're from." He took a hold of the machine, it looked something not unlike a pen at the tip, but the top of it had a fair amount of machinery on it. "This is the machine. What I do is I put some ink into this reservoir here, and it'll get onto the needle which goes up through here. The needle goes so fast that you'll only feel a sting after I start going over the area a few times. It'll hurt, don't get me wrong, but after a while, you'll probably go numb. The needle itself only goes into your skin a fraction of an inch, just enough to get under, to the layer where the ink won't get pushed out over time." He leaned backwards to pull out the color charts he'd broken the colors into, showing it to her. "I'll be starting with the outline, and then fill in the color. I've got the outline printed out so I can put on... well, it's kind of like a sticker, onto your back, and then trace it that way. The color will be the most time intensive part. You dig on that, pretty mama?" He set the color chart down and smiled at her. "We'll stop about halfway through, grab a bite to eat, and I'll explain the healing process and the aftercare of it for you."

She'd figured that it would be some sort of pointy thing, but she hadn't expected the machine to be so elaborate. Maybe that was why the only person she knew from her world that had any was an Al Bhed.

She moved to take off her shirt, chuckling at his easy flirtation. "I can handle pain," she grinned. She folded it and looked for a place to set it down. "How long have you been doing this?" She checked her hair to make sure it was all captured in her messy makeshift bun.

What few strands that had escaped of her hair were easily and quickly brushed away by Artan, who smiled slightly as he set the shirt aside on a nearby table, "Professionally? About nine years. In reality? I've been giving myself tattoos since I was fifteen. There's a lot of old guys in my profession, been doing it since they could get a license. Thirty, fourty years experience." He started prepping her, laying the temporary design on her back and getting it aligned just right before dampening it. It was just like a temporary tattoo you'd get in a gum ball machine. Only larger and more elaborate.

He slipped the backing away, filled the reservoir, and started working, starting the machine. It gave off a mechanical buzzing sound. "Relax and lay forward on the chair, and don't move much, okay? First sting in three, two..." He laid the needle into her skin, with confidence and ease. He was happy to find that she didn't bleed right off the bat, and that her skin took to it easily. "Good news, you're not a pussy." He said with a chuckle. "So who's this friend of yours with all the ink? Maybe if you don't think I suck, you can tell him I do touchups, too."

"Still, just because you've been doing it for less time and are as talented as you are shows that you've got a gift." She felt things happening behind her - dampness and his certain fingers moving over the skin.

The buzz unnerved her for a moment, but she did as he instructed, leaning forward and sitting very still. She closed her eyes and tried to focus on something else, letting herself think about Besaid and watching Yuna play on the beach. The needle stung at first, but no worse than accidentally hitting herself with a spell had when she'd been very young. Maybe being a warrior had given her a high threshhold - she supposed getting hit with an aeon's claws would up anyone's tolerance for pain.

When he told her she wasn't a pussy, she tried not to laugh, instead letting her lips curve upward into a smile. "Well, thank you. I'm glad to hear that." She spoke a little more loudly than usual to be heard over the buzz. "His name's Skwisgaar Skwigelf. I'm ... well, I suppose you could say we're together. He's got a number of them, and they're all beautiful." She'd spent many an evening tracing them with her fingertips, touching her tongue to the multicolored skin.

Artan raised both brows to the name, and chuckled, continuing easily enough, "The lead guitarist for Dethklok? I know him. Or... know of him, I guess. I know worked on one version of him, met another version back on an island when Delirium decided she'd make them all take a vacation in an alternate dimension, and have seen two other of him on the board. I'm guessing you're not dating the teenager." He huffed another chuckle and shook his head. "Makes me wonder how many realities they're in, frankly. And if their music is just as fundamentally kick ass on all realities as they are in ours." He pulled back and refilled again before bringing the needle back to her skin. "The mighty mister Skwigelf actually got some piercings by me back in my reality. Let me tell you, sweetie, if things are all fundamentally similar in all forms of reality, I don't know whether I admire you, envy you, or fear for your well-being. That guy doesn't need adornment."

"I know there's the younger him here, as well as the older. Though it stands to reason that there's other realities. I've read about that happening." She was glad that her back was facing him, because she all but beamed when he complimented Skwisgaar's music. "He's fantastically talented. I've never heard anything like what he can do."

"Which piercings?" She was actually curious, and couldn't help chuckling. "If you're referring to what I think you are, you're correct, he doesn't need adornment. But it doesn't hurt."

"Yeah, those ones. And are you sure? Because damn. I'd figure it'd hurt like hell." He licked his lips as he went over the same area again, just to make sure he got it right.

His work was practiced and patient, and he was quiet for a moment before asking, "So where are you from? I've never seen anything quite like this before. It's... pretty." His tongue poked out as he rounded a corner off.

"It can, but I find it a bit more stimulating. It's odd how nerves are interrelated." It was a fairly scientific explanation of a simple concept, but Lulu didn't want to be as blunt to say that she liked pain a bit. It seemed a bit crass.

She closed her eyes, feeling the needle pass over new skin. "I'm from a place called Spira. It was a statue of a religious symbol." Granted, she'd helped to single-handedly end the Church of Yevon, but the Fayth of Bahamut had somehow guided the pilgrimage. "It was very different from here. Skwisgaar is appalled that we only had one song, for example."

"I'd suppose he would be. And well, it's a gorgeous symbol. What is it of, if you don't mind my prying? I always like hearing stories." For one, it kept the customer's mind off the pain and into why they were getting the tattoo. It also gave him a lot of fallback for stories he could use in his other job.

He leaned back and got a damp gauze to wipe down the ink and blood that leaked, to check on the work so far, nodding once that he'd covered all the outline on the rounded part. It would take a while to get all the black laid out, so he hoped her story was a long one.

She started to tell her story, starting with an explanation of Sin, and its destruction and rebirth, how it had terrorized the entire world for a thousand years. Then she explained how the Church of Yevon had worked, a long tale about the outlawing of machines and the institution of the pilgrimage to the different temples which would grant a summoner Aeons to help destroy Sin for a time.

"So, that is one of the Fayth, one of the people who gave their lives to be encased in living stone to help us get a decade of peace now and again." She smiled a little. "His name was Bahamut, and he couldn't have been more than ten years old when he sacrificed his life." She briefly explained what a Guardian was, in case he asked why she had seen the Fayth when she wasn't a summoner.

"It will remind me of traveling Spira, remind me how I helped to liberate my entire home. So that maybe losing the only man I ever loved, losing my family and my name - maybe all of that was for good. I think it was. Just like that boy did."

He listened as she spoke, still paying the utmost attention to his work, occasionally clearing her skin of blood and excess ink and going right back to work. By the time her story was done, he was filling in the larger black parts, having been finished with the rest of the outline for a while. "That's a pretty incredible story, babe. I thought my life was insane, but hell. And hell, who knows? Maybe Yuna will show up one day. When I got here, not only was my best friend here, but soon after, my old boss showed up, as did the two guys who ran the island I lived on. So did a demon I know. I've been seeing a lot of familiar-but-not-them faces around, too. Like, Iunno. The McManus brothers. I've seen them on the boards. And I've seen Petit's dad, even though he wasn't her dad, and Logan. But the point I'm trying to make here is that you might just be one of the first raindrops preceding a flood." He was surprised that such a beautiful creature was just a ten year old boy. He also noted that it was a dragon.

"So. You're dating Skwisgaar. And you're getting a dragon tattoo. And they are totally unrelated coincidence.

She smiled at his comforting words, surprised and pleased that he was the type of person to try to comfort someone without being goaded into it. "Perhaps. Brother, the brother of someone I knew from home - he's been here for some time. So you might be right. I hope you are. I'm not used to not looking after Yuna." She smiled to herself, glad that Artan had so many people he knew.

She didn't see the coincidence that she knew a dragon, had killed a dragon, and was getting a tattoo of one with her relationship with Skwisgaar. "Yes. Is that... odd?" She would have turned around if he didn't have a needle in her back.

"Nope, total coincidence." Artan said with a chuckle. "But he's totally going to love it. If he's anything like the guy I'm aware of." He raised a brow, "Mind if I smoke? I'm kind of niccing over here and it's not the most sterile environment possible? But I'm guessing a little tobacco smoke won't kill you or anything."

He set down the machine and stretched his hand for a moment, "Ten minute break, either way, don't need the artist's hand cramping up." He looked at the clock and realized an hour and a half had already passed. He was getting faster.

"I was aware he liked dragons, yes. He was rather pleased to discover that I had in killing an undead one." She chuckled and nodded her okay to him smoking. "I've got to admit that I think I'm picking up the habit from him." She didn't buy her own yet, but she was stealing cigarettes with alarming regularity. "Do you mind if I have one?"

As soon as he put the machine down she stood up and stretched, moving her hips a bit. "It doesn't hurt as much as I'd feared. Thank you."

He handed her a hand held mirror for her to go look at the work so far in the full length mirror, before grabbing his pack of cigarettes and lighting two, handing one of them to her. "Hot chicks who smoke are top of the list, though. Double so when they're dating rock stars. You've got it all going for you, don'tcha? The looks, the life, the abilities. Shit, my girl's got some competition for Most Likely to Kick Ass status now." He smirked and leaned back against the wall, near the ashtray. "I used to be all wound up over the fact that I didn't have any powers or anything, you know? People in my reality... well, some of them evolved. Started getting powers, special abilities. I'm just a regular guy. I was actually one of the only normal humans that fought for mutant rights. Not because I thought they were just like everyone else, but because I thought they were better. When I was a kid, I wished I would get some crazy power that would like, let me have x-ray vision or walk through walls or some shit. Now... Well, I'm kind of the most boring guy I know."

He took a drag of his cigarette, "But you having the ability to perform magic, that's pretty special. Back home, you'd probably have fit right in with the right crowd."

Lulu admired the outline as much as she could with the mirror, smiling and turning to and fro. After accepting the cigarette she inhaled greedily, closing her eyes in contentment as she exhaled. His words made her chuckle. "I didn't know what Skwisgaar was when I first started to care about him. To be honest, I thought he came on far too strong the first time we chatted on the boards. Then we became friends. He's not from my universe - I don't even really have a conception of what he used to do beyond what people tell me."

She moved by the ashtray, smiling at his story. "Regular people can be the most heroic, though. My ex-fiance, Chappu, he didn't have any powers. But he was the most brave man I'd ever known. Very good at blitzball. Funny. Kind." If she was aware of the dreamy smile on her face she gave no indication of it. "Normal people - so you call them - are the most important, as there are more of them. And to be honest, magic is simply having the inclination to practice spells over and over and over again. I taught Skwisgaar a very simple spell, so anyone can do it, I think. Though I doubt my teachers at home would have agreed with me."

"Nah. I'm not brave." Artan said with a shake of his head and a lofty smile on his face. "I'm just stupid. This is my what, third job? I only moonlight as a tattoo artist. Here, I'm a musician and my first, and always my favorite job is..." He took a drag from his cigarette, looking up at her. "Well, it's dangerous, is what it is. Not as dangerous as say, assassin, or anything. That'd be my girly." He scratched the side of his neck, where there was a rune tattooed. "But I'm no hero. I'm kind of chickenshit when it comes to stuff like fighting. Let fights resolve themselves, you know? I'll look after the women and children if shit goes down." He did that plenty of times while living on the island.

"I'm still convinced that when I die, the only legacy that I'll have truly earned is my daughter. She's... here too. She hasn't even been conceived yet, but she's here. Nicest gal I know, real perky kinda chicky. Glad to know that I do somethin' right, other than ink and steel."

Lulu gave him a sad smile. "You don't think it's brave to know what you're capable of and to do that job well? In my humble opinion - after the life I've lived - loving by itself is brave." She tapped the shoulder above the tattoo she was getting. "That boy was brave, but I'll be he wasn't a warrior or a magician. He simply wanted the war to end, so he let himself live on to help that. In his own way, he was looking after everyone."

She shook her head. "I bet you'll leave a larger legacy than you'd ever dreamed. Already I like you, and would tell anyone I met you're a good man." She reached out to pat him on the hand, albeit briefly.

He smirked, "Well, for what it's worth, I know I'm a good man. I just suck at being a hero." He smirked, "You gotta understand, pumpkin, I wasn't raised to be brave or strong. I was raised to be sneaky and devious. And luckily, that's something that comes in handy in my work. The talent came natural, but even so, it's not like I'm expecting to be a hero, or even wanting to be. I'm cool with who I am. I just fail at being memorable. Well, unless you count, you know, my awesome pecs. Hoowah." He flexed slightly and smirked.

"Okay, not even for those."

Lulu laughed, smiling. "You're handsome, in a completely objective way. I'd rather not have your lady come chasing after me." She didn't want to start any fights. "And heroism comes in many forms, and you won't be able to persuade me otherwise." She ashed her cigarette, still laughing at his little sound effect. Most of the men she knew in this new world were silly, and she had to admit she found it refreshing.

"How did you and your girlfriend meet?" She was always curious about how people met those they fell in love with.

"Fiancee. She and I met on that island. But technically, I knew her uncle for a while beforehand. She and I were trial partners in the Thieves Guild. She only had to take them for looks. I mean, she's the leader's daughter, and the acting official in charge's niece. But yeah. She and I have been rivals and friends for shit... fifteen years? Somethin' like that. Anyway, she got married to this guy that I really respected, you know? So I never really had a chance to tell her how I felt. And when I did... she laughed in my face and told me to fuck off. She tells me now that it was because she honestly didn't believe me. Well hey, I wouldn't believe me either, I'm kind of an asshole."

He ashed his own smoke and took another drag of it, smiling, "She was the first person I saw here. Totally out of the blue, too. I hadn't even been expecting her or anyone else I knew would be here, but I walked into a restaurant and there she was. Man, it's crazy. She's still married back home, but we decided we'd make the best of it here. I never stopped loving her. She... sort of realizes it now." He stubbed out his smoke and stood, stretching and cracking his neck and knuckles. "So, ready for round two?"

Lulu couldn't help but smile at his story. It was one of the most romantic things she'd ever heard, and she had to bite back a sort of odd cooing noise. She'd never made them before, but she'd never met someone with such a sweet story.

She finished her cigarette once he asked if she was ready for round two, stubbing it out and settling back down in the chair. "I doubt I will ever get married, but I must admit I'm ... happy. It's the first time in five years I've been able to have joy for myself, and it's refreshing."

Artan's smile slipped easily onto his face as he started to work once more, fixing up a few spots he'd missed before replacing the nib and starting on color, starting at the tips of the wings, a deep reddish-purple that he always liked seeing in skin and ink. "Well, I wouldn't necessarily consider Skwisgaar - or any of that band, for that matter - a family man. Back home, he's got a reputation of being the band's playboy. He usually dates older... WAY older chicks, though. And heavy women, too. But then again, the dude's only like, thirty. He might have mellowed out and grown less ridiculous, who knows?" He looked at the chart, watching carefully where he laid the ink. The colors would blend seamlessly once he was finished, but for right then, he was working on making sure the ink he set down was exactly where it needed to be.

"So lemmie tell you about the Thieves Guild. Back home, there were certain professions you just kind of either had to be born into, or have an in-road. One of those jobs was professional thief. Now, being a regular schmuck like I am, I had to carve my own way there. When I was ten, I decided I wanted to be just like my favorite mutant in the whole world, the Thief that worked for the X-Men, who went by Gambit. Now this guy, he's suave and tall and sexy and Cajun. Has that look to him that could break hearts if he just smiled, right? Well, he was my type of guy. Annnd then I realized I wouldn't be growing past 5'9" anytime soon. The tall, dark and handsome was right out the window, so I had to rely on my skills and technical ability. So I learned how to break into a person's house without use of my charm. I started getting the Guild's attention when I was sixteen, and when I was 18, I finally sealed a place in the trials by stealing an amulet straight off the neck of a vampire. Sure, I had to pretend like I was after one of their swords, but they totally didn't see it coming."

He'd been one of the many thieves who'd fallen victim to the puzzle box, in fact. Rubies were shiny things, and Artan was and always had been a ferret.

"Oh, I don't... I'm happy enough just being around Skwisgaar. I'm surprised he likes me at all, honestly. When he told me that he wasn't going to be with other women, I was rather surprised. I still am. I don't expect a family with him, or marriage, or even to be with him for very long. I'm just enjoying him while I can, while he allows it." It sounded a bit sad and desperate, but it didn't bother her overmuch. She was from a place where relationships were transient due to such frequent death. She was just glad to finally be happy at all. Though she wouldn't have turned down a life of growing old with the Swede, she knew in the pit of her stomach that it wasn't in the cards for her.

"Everyone's taller than me, Artan." She made sure not to chuckle, but she was mostly amused. "I assure you you're still tall dark and handsome to a great number of people. Though I have to admit, that's very impressive." She bit her lip as the needle did something she wasn't used to, but made no other signs of protest.

Artan just nodded and made a small sound of understanding to the first. He was actually not expecting things to last, though for Lulu's sake, he hoped she'd be pleasantly surprised.

At the next, he snickered, "But babe, you're from an entirely different world. And dudes from my world are generally pretty tall, with the exception of a couple. Logan's shorter than me, which I guess says something. But I'm on the shorter-than-average side of things, so, y'know. I fit well into small spaces. Or something." He snickered, "Well, I used to be able to fit into most ventilation shafts, but I've put on some muscle since my days in the Guild, and now my shoulders are too wide."

"You still have your own roguish way about you." She smiled and wondered if there was anyone in her world quite like him. Nobody that she'd met, certainly, and that made her happy. It was always nice for her to meet people that were unique to the new world she lived in. "Aw, he gets jealous?" Quipped the Thief, chuckling. "That's so funny. Don't worry about it. For all intents and purposes, I could be considered like your one-time therapist. I don't have that whole doctor/patient confidentiality oath, but I can promise you anything you say here will be kept in the strictest of confidence." He smiled then, flicking his tongue over his lower lip before going and getting the next color.

"Flatter me all you want, I like it and you won't hear any protests." He started in with the deeper shade of purple, scooting a bit closer to make sure he got the coloring right. "I warn you, though. If a bitty little dark haired chick with red eyes comes in, we'll have to stop making out." He was obviously joking, just by how he said it.

"Well, I was with someone else when we met. Someone who still wants to be friends. Skwisgaar doesn't care for that idea much." She would have shrugged, but remembered herself just in time.

Then he talked about making out, and she had to bite down on her tongue hard not to laugh and shake her shoulders, messing everything up. "Don't make me laugh while you've got metal under my skin, that's not fair." It was obvious that he also deeply loved the woman from how he said it. "So, when did you know you first loved her?"

Artan chuckled, "Ha, I am evil. I'm drilling ink into your skin and making you laugh! Torture! Pure torture." He had to think about her question, though not for long. Nobody had ever asked him that question before - mostly because he never told anyone about Petit after he'd left the island.

"Shit, well... I guess that had to be when she came home from the trials over at the Assassin's guild and she was really sick. Someone had poisoned her. I was worried sick about her, even though I knew she'd pull through. Her boyfriend at the time was by her side constantly and I started to realize that I was starting to hate his guts that he was always by her side when I felt I should be there in his place. Like I said, I respect Caleb, though. He's got more heart than brains, though, always treated her like something you're supposed to put on a pedestal instead of a real girl, you know what I'm saying? He revered her, and I just wanted to be close to her and get to know who she was, what made her tick." He sighed. "I figured if I could do that, maybe I could be able to open up to someone, myself. I admire the shit out of her, don't get me wrong. I just... I don't see her or anyone else as someone to idolize." He had a faraway look as he continued to get the color laid into the wings and body of the creature.

"I didn't tell her about it for years, though. She got married to Caleb, and I kept my damn mouth shut. When I finally did tell her... well, I guess it was stupid of me to even think about it then. I dunno. Then again, she probably figured it out a long while before. You see... When I told you I don't have any powers, that's not completely true. I kinda happened to get a tattoo from a gypsy lady who had a thing for me. It's um. It's complicated. I can die, but not from any outside causes. I'm immune to poison, can't die from blood loss, can't die from electrocution or suffocation. Stuff like that. It was a pretty big secret back then, I didn't tell anyone about it. So I told you that to tell this."

He leaned back and looked at the color so far and decided there was one spot that needed more blending, so he worked on that before going further up the wing.

"See, back when I was about 23 and she was 19, we got this job we decided to do together. Standard "cursed item" grab deal, high security precautions, and then we upped the ante by deciding to make it a bet. Whoever got the knife - I think it was a knife, I don't even remember now - first, won and had to buy the other's breakfast. So we get in, and she gets poisoned - y'know? I just realized that happens a lot to her - and she gets sluggish and stops responding. Sure, she got the knife first, but I had to get her out of there. I'm not leaving my best friend behind, y'know what I'm sayin'? So I drag her skinny scrawny ass out of the house and I tell her to take cover, since they released the dogs. These things are ferocious, big ol' fuckin' dogs, too. I got her over the electric fence, then I had to jump it, myself."

He paused to dab away the excess ink and blood yet again before continuing.

"So I did. Now this is an electric fence that could kill a person if they touched it. Fuck if I know what the hell amount of volts run through it, but the chances of my living through it were none. At all. But I did. She saw me electrocute my own dumb ass as I jumped over the fence, and I laid there for a good long while, trying to get that "just run over by a stampede of horses" feeling, feeling like my body was going to just about explode. I shook it off after a couple minutes, but she kept just eying me. Finally she brought it up that I saved her ass, and I nodded. Then she asked me how and I didn't tell her. Not... at least until we got back home. But whatever. She's quick, she probably put two and two together. It wasn't the first time I saved her ass without caring about my own. It was just the one that counted."

Lulu listened to his story, making sure to stay perfectly still. It seemed that people had set out to create their own adventures in other worlds, that they'd gotten restless and tried to figure out their own ways to make sense of things.

When he talked about his woman being married, she swallowed hard. "One of the people I know from... from my world says that I'm married and have a child back home. I don't remember it." She didn't know why she was telling Artan - apparently he was therapist for a day - but she quickly moved back to his story. "You realized you loved her because of that. It's sweet, you know. Being willing to sacrifice things for someone else."

He smiled slightly, "Well, I realized I loved her when she got back from the Assassin's Guild trials. She realized I loved her when I shocked myself to shit." He had to think over what she'd said about her theoretical future back home.

"Are you happier with the way things are here?" He asked, dabbing away the excess once more before switching over to the light blue.

"That is a fairly definitive way of saying 'I love you', yes. And more poetic and heartfelt than most of the others I can think of." Even Chappu taking her out to the lake and kissing her under the stars was hardpressed to beat the romance of putting oneself into harm's way to save a girl.

Without hesitation she answered his question. "Yes. I - " If the man knew Skwisgaar, she didn't want to actually reveal her feelings about the older man. That was something she knew for certain she'd have to never say. "The man I allegedly married is a friend, yes, but he's also the brother of my first love. Chappu died too soon, and..." She realized she wasn't finishing many sentences and swallowed. "I don't ever see myself falling in love with Wakka. Maybe I did it because there weren't many choices in my world, but I like where I am now. And I don't want to be with anyone but who I'm with. I said I was his, and I meant that. Until he says otherwise."

Artan knew the underlying cause for all the dropped sentences.

"You can see yourself falling hard for him, can't you. Hey, don't let popular opinion sway your own, sweetcheeks. For all anyone knows, I'm the son of a CEO of an air conditioning corporation and an industrial singer and songwriter. People think I'm on heroin. People also think I've half lost my mind by getting engaged to some chick that got disowned. And that's just what they think of me here. Who knows what he's really like, other than himself and his band mates? And even then, how well do they know a guy that's twenty years ahead of them? You don't have to hold out any hope or take solace in the fact that blah blah comforting words here, but baby, don't stress yourself. There's always a chance. If I have a chance with the girl I've been in love with my entire adult life, there's a chance maybe your rock star will return those feelings for you that you feel are growing for him."

He shrugged, "Just sayin'. Hey, you feel like taking a lunch break soon? I've got about half of this left to do, but it's coming together pretty well. It'll give your skin some time to process what's going on, and I'm starving."

Lulu was starting to think that he really was part therapist, and she was glad that someone in the world besides her knew how she felt. "That would be fine." She wasn't hungry, but she expected that was the pain talking. She did plan on stealing another cigarette and maybe some water.

"I'm just going to let things happen. It's amazing, being somewhere where I can do that at all." She processed what he'd said and blinked, realizing for the first time that people being on heroin might be a bad thing. She'd thought it was just one of Skwisgaar's habits.

She stood up once he'd moved away, not really feeling self-conscious about walking around topless. It was obvious he was in love with his woman, and she'd been that way for almost two hours. "It's so interesting, all of this." She gestured at the display cases and started to look at the body jewelry.

He lit a cigarette after setting down the machine and wiping down her back so she could get a good look at it as it stood. He offered her his pack of cigarettes and lighter before walking over with her. "Yeah? And they're all for different parts of the body, all different gauges, too. This..." He opened up the case and pulled out a bone spiral, "This is how I gauged my own ears up to zeros." He pushed back his black hair and let her have a look at his ears, both of which had hollow metal plugs. "Some people go far with them, I just like the look they have this way." He set the bone spiral back in place, "And then there's barbells for all occasions." He leaned against the display case and pointed to several, telling her where they were for. "There's other stuff as well, but I only keep the stuff that sells fairly quickly. I can always order other stuff if people want it."

She accepted a cigarette and lit it herself with her fingertip and a tiny fire spell, which was actually easier for her than flicking the lighter a few times. His ears were interesting, and she had to make herself not reach out to touch them. "They're pretty. Frame your face somehow, I don't know how to explain it."

Lulu wondered what piercing she'd get if she ever got one. She was actually excited to get her tattoo healed well enough so she could show people. It was beautiful, Artan was right, and she leaned forward on the counter, lost in thought. Exhaling quietly, she stretched a little.

"So, I know a place that delivers 'round the clock here in town. Cajun food. You like spicy stuff, darlin'? I'll order some jambalaya. On the house, you're already pouring a pretty big chunk of money into this." He actually was in the mood for it, for once. He loved spicy food, and seafood.

He loved food.

Artan grinned wide, "If not, I've got a zillion menus like, right over there by the phone. Feel free to see what looks edible. Ask if you don't know what something is."

He took a drag of his cigarette and proceeded to stretch out. He was happy he finally had a place of his own, although he missed being on the road. He loved being back in Louisiana, but he missed Henri. The man was like a father to him, and he wanted to see him once again. That old fart wasn't going to miss his wedding if he could do anything about it - even if he had to postpone the wedding until they were out of the alternate universe or Henri came to this one. Any Henri.

"I don't know what it is, but I can eat almost anything." She'd had to become a not-very-fussy eater while traveling all over. "The best way for me to discover new food is to try it."

She noticed how he looked somewhat content and yet not, but didn't say anything. It wasn't really her place. But still, he'd been such a help. "Are you all right? You look pensive." She smiled at him, moving back toward the ash tray and settling down near it.

He turned to her and just then - mostly due to the fact that he had been in business-mode and not oh-hey-there's-a-half-naked-woman-in-my-store mode - realized that she had fantastic breasts. He smirked, "Just fine, now. Thanks." He wandered over to the phone and gave the restaurant a phone call. He ordered two big dishes of jambalaya, an order of fries, an order of onion rings, two huge sodas, and that was it. He dropped himself beside her and took another drag of his soda, "It'll be about twenty minutes, they're just a couple blocks away. You might want to put your shirt back on before they get here, I mean, just in case you don't want to get ogled."

She shrugged. "I'll cover myself with something when they come to the door. You've seen them before, and you're in love. You're no risk," she chuckled. She didn't understand the male fascination with breasts, though she did enjoy exploiting it.

"This will take a long time to heal, correct? Sadly, that rules out most of my wardrobe." Corsets would probably rub up against it.

He shrugged, "Anywhere from a month to a month and a half, usually. Depends on how your skin takes to it, how well you take care of it. Have you told your loverboy about this? If it's a surprise, I bet you anything he'll help you take care of it. He's got plenty of ink, he probably knows what to do with it all." He smiled, "It'll be tender for about two, three days. keep it from drying out or getting infected, because this is a lot like a wound. It is a wound. Don't scratch at it. I'll give you some tattoo butter. It's... kind of like hypoallergenic lotion that locks in moisture and keeps it from getting germs in it and stuff. If you need anything else, just ask your boy toy. Dude will probably tell you all about how to take care of it."

Artan's lips curled into another smile. "I'll also just give you a little aftercare card, I throw together a good "I got scarred for life" after package." He pointed with his chin towards the little pile of plastic bags. "Like going shopping, only more painful."

"I did it on a whim. I'll be sure to have him rub it on me, since I don't think I can reach it on my own. I'm not that flexible." She chuckled and took another drag from her smoke, wondering how many more of his bad habits she was due to inherit.

She chuckled at him, smiling and shaking her head. "I'm glad that you did this. You've such an eye. It's ... a suiting honor for what he did. What I helped to do." She bit her lip and grinned, wondering exactly what she and Skwisgaar could get into with him giving her daily rubdowns on her back.
