Who: Ava Bashlik and Henry Townshend
What: Ava's going to do some barrier spells for Henry. Henry's going to help Ava get a new cell phone. Maybe more?
Where: Safe houses, wandering around San Diego
When: A few days ago
Warnings: Probably none.

Ava had all of the supplies for the spells that she needed for Henry's safe houses for the agency in a rucksack. She had checked it three times by the time that he had made his way into the office. She had heard his arrival through the back door but she had sensed him when he had pulled his car into the alley.

When she heard him enter her eyes raised up to meet his and she smiled at him. Her eyes changed just for a moment as she looked at him with her second sight. It was a habit for her to do this from back in her own world. Checking the aura of whomever came near her. Inwardly, she chastised herself for doing so. She was no longer in that world. It was Henry and she was safe with him. "Hello Henry."

Picking up the rucksack she through it over a shoulder. It was a little heavy but nothing that she could not manage herself. She booted down her computer with a few quick taps of her finger. Reaching over to the answering machine she turned it on. She had gotten used to all of these modern gadgets very quickly. "I am ready. You are well?" She asked him as she walked from behind the desk and met him to go out the door.

He smiled as entered, completely unaware of the peeking at his aura. If she looked at it for any length of time, she'd probably be able to tell he was in some turmoil over something, and then there were the deeper issues, which were luckily starting to heal thanks in some part to the vacation. If she really looked, she'd probably be able to tell that he was recovering from a very serious depression, and if the near-death experience he'd had with Reika had left any marks on him, that would show up as well.

Not for the first time, a sort of inner dialogs started up as he entered the office. She looks gorgeous. No don't think that, focus on just getting the spells done first! You want to ask her out, right? Yes, but after getting the spells done because otherwise the whole trip will be awkward when she rejects us! Henry really hated internal dialogs, however, so after that he flipped it off in his mind.

All that took about a second. "Hey! I'm doing pretty well, yeah. How about you?" Then he nodded at the rucksack. "You need any help with that?" He knew she probably didn't, but it was the gentlemanly thing to ask. As for the other thing he wanted to ask, he intended to wait until after the spells were finished first.

Ava had seen Henry's inner turmoil before in his aura when they were last out with one another. She had not asked him about it then but the blue in it today indicated that he had found some sort of inner peace. Feeling that it was not her place to ask she had not asked then or now. She mostly checked it just in case it was someone pretending to be him. Every person's aura was unique. If it had been a demon instead of Henry she would have been able to tell that.

"I am well. Learning the way of things quickly I think." She walked out the door with him, turning to lock the door behind her. When he asked if she needed any help with the bag she shook her head. "No, but thank you."

They walked to her car and she put the bag behind her seat and got in the car. She liked his car. "The spelling shall be pretty simple I think. I had to adjust a few things and we will see quickly whether or not it will work. I really do not have any doubts that it will not but it is good to be sure."

"You're doing really well with all this stuff," he told her, glad that she was adjusting well. He hopped into the driver's side of the car and started it up, taking a second to take in a very subtle deep breath. After finally acknowledging what he was feeling he was a little nervous, but the deep breath helped him hide it.

He turned to get a better view while backing out, still talking as he did so. "I'm sure the spells will be fine. I've got absolute confidence in you." He tossed her a little smile before putting the car in drive and heading on out.

He knew exactly how he was going to do this. After the spells were done, he would suggest that while they were out, he wanted to show her a movie. And then, after that, he would suggest that since it was around dinner time, that they should get dinner. It was going to be a casual thing, something he could easily play off as just a friendly outing if she turned him down when he did finally get up the courage to say something...which, knowing him, wouldn't be until somewhere around dropping her off afterwards.

It had been quite a long time since she had anyone confident in her abilities. Ugaralimepte had always found some fault in any of the curses or spells that she cast for him. Even when there was no fault at all. The smut on her soul from spinning the demon magic would probably never go away. Even if all the spelling that she did from here on out was the good kind. That did not mean she would stop trying. She was pretty glad that Henry was not magically inclined. If he could see the ugliness of the five hundred years of spinning curses for a demon he would probably not want anything to do with her.

Nodding and smiling a little she agreed. They drove most of the way in companionable silence. Ava had something to ask Henry but she needed to find the courage to do so. After she was done with the spelling maybe then she would ask him.

Getting out of the car she was not sure what kind of building this was. It did not look like the office at all. "What is this building used for?"

Henry cringed inwardly at this part. The explanation probably wouldn't make her feel all that safe, but he wasn't going to lie. "It's a safe house. I sort of...have some enemies. They claim to be laying low, and have said they won't do anything to me if I don't provoke them..." He sighed and ran a hand through his hair, the other fishing for the key to the place in his pocket. "I don't really trust them, though. So the safe house is for situations where any of us need to go to ground for a bit, and basically disappear."

He smiled weakly as he approached and unlocked the door. "Guess that comes with the territory when you inadvertently piss off a cult." He swung the door open and stepped back, mock-bowing. "Ladies first." He was grinning a little, but swept his hand inward for her to head on in ahead of him. He knew the Esoteric Order wouldn't be able to find the house. He'd seen to that.

Ava understood what Henry was saying. All great men had enemies. It was a fact of life. "You are a warrior? A protector of the people then?" She had thought she sensed something of that from him but he was not the same kind that she had known when she was a girl.

She gave him a smirk before going inside in front of him. Someday she would have to tell him that she was not a lady. She hadn't been for quite some time. She sensed the energy in this place. It would do for casting her spell. There was a line close by that she could tap into. It wouldn't be a problem.

"It won't take me but a few moments."

Henry chuckled a little at that, dropping the key back into his pocket as he followed her in, letting the door close behind them. "I don't know about that. Warrior, protector of the people...they sound good, but I think they're a little grand for a regular guy like me." Superman, they'd definitely fit Superman, but though Henry did what he could and would never sit idly by in the face of disaster, there wasn't a whole lot he could really do in those kinds of situations. "I do everything I can to help people," he said, shrugging.

The image of Dagon involuntarily made it's way back into the front of his mind and he had to close his eyes for a moment, forcing the memory back where it belonged. "I do what I can," he repeated, this time adding, "so if that makes me one of those two then I guess I am. I just like to think of it as not wanting to see people hurting, or scared."

"From what I have learned in my life Henry, most do not care about others. That makes you special. Although... I could just be jaded from my past." The corners of her mouth turned up just a tad.

She sat down on the floor in the room of the building that he had led her too. Opening up her bag she took out her mortar and pestle and started to crush assorted herbs into it. Once that was through she pulled out a finger stick and pricked her finger. To quicken the spell it would take three drops of blood. Not looking up from her preparations she was afraid that he would be put off by the sight of her blood. To her she was so used to it that it did not mean anything to her.

After the spell ingredients were ready she started to speak in a different tongue. In the language of her people. She drew upon the ley line.

"Lússë i morë hwesta súya
ar Qualmëo huinë ëa yontalta
ar ilya calar autar,
Túla asëa. Túla asëa.
Cuina an i firnalë
massë arano caitala."

Taking out a redwood disk from her bag she put it into the mixture. After she did that she set it to the side to dry. "If this amulet grows red that means that the spell has been broken some how. Would you like to test to see if the spell is working? Try to hit me." She was confident in her magic and she wondered if he trusted her enough to try.

Henry couldn't really find any way to argue that, so he just grinned a little and let it drop. Though Ava didn't seem too jaded, anyway.

He watched as she began the spell, making sure to keep silent to avoid distracting her from it. The drops of blood didn't really bother him. He knew enough about magic to know that sometimes blood played a part in spellwork. If she'd been slicing open her arms he'd have probably suggested rethinking this whole spell thing, but since it was only three drops, it didn't really bother him.

The language did catch him a little off guard. He had no clue what she was saying or what language it was, but it sounded very elegant. It definitely jived with what he could imagine hearing during a spell.

He was a little nervous about the idea of trying to hit her, but he was confident in her abilities. He certainly wouldn't be throwing a close-fisted punch or anything, but maybe a little open-handed smack on the arm would work. "Okay, here we go..." And he stepped up and attempted to give Ava a light smack on the arm.

The degree of intensity of the kick-back of the spell depended upon the force of the one intending to cause the harm. When Henry tried to smack her arm he was pushed backward with the same amount of force. She smiled at him. "I think that it is working." There had not really been doubt that it would not but there was always the chance with magic.

Picking up the rosewood disk off of the ground she handed it to him. "You can do with that what you wish. If you would like to keep them at the office so I can watch them that would be fine. Or if you want to keep them in each of the safe houses that would be fine to." She realized that she might not have explained the disk properly she continued. "If someone or something tries to tamper with the barrier spell, or if the spell is completely broken? The disk will turn red."

Henry chuckled and nodded, examining the disk curiously. "Thanks. I knew I came to the right person for this." He smiled and flipped the disk over to examine the back of it. That was really impressive, and he was glad that it had worked. This would definitely keep any accidents from happening here.

"We should probably keep them at the office, so that we'll know ahead of time if the spell is tampered with." He definitely didn't want to stumble into a scenario like that with no knowledge of it.

"So hey, since we're out anyway, I thought I should show you a movie." He slipped that little bit in there just like it was casual conversation. He'd let her pick the movie, and afterwards he'd suggest that since it was so late, he'd buy her dinner.

"You are most welcome Henry. It was actually enjoyable for me to alter the spell from a previous one that I have used." Ava was glad that Henry was pleased with the spell.

"That sounds like a sound plan." Nodding her agreement she started to pack up her stuff.

Looking up at him when he asked her if he should show her a movie. Not really sure what that was she said, "I am not really sure what that is but you can show me it." She smiled a little. "Honestly, I rather enjoy your company."

Henry smiled at that, and hoped it wouldn't change later on. "A movie is kind of like TV, but it has a bigger budget, and instead of being broadcast on TV, it's shown on large screens in a movie theater." He thought about that for a second and then added, "Sometimes older movies will get put on TV, but new movies won't be on TV for a while."

He gave it a little more thought and nodded, offering her a hand to help her up. "I know a place to get phones that's right near a movie theater. We can get you a new phone first, and then see a movie at the theater. Does that sound okay to you?"

"It all sounds very grand." It did sound like that to her. Everything on a very large scale. She wondered if it looked like the people would come right out of the screen.

Taking his hand when he offered it she stood up. "That sounds great." They left the safe house and drove over to the phone place. It did not take them that long at all.

"I do hope this does the trick and no others come by my home." She could handle herself in situations. To her, it was the sheer fact of the matter that people were rapping on her door in the middle of the night.

"It can be," Henry nodded. "Oh, but never see a movie with the name Uwe Boll involved. Your brain will thank you for it." He'd been one of those unfortunate people that thought House of the Dead would be good, and he still kicked himself over it. "He likes to call himself a director. I call him the reason there should be an IQ test before people get to direct a movie."

When they got to the store, Henry went in with her to help explain all the different types of phones, and the different features available for each. He had to pull one of the salesmen in for part of it, to help with the technical side of things and for information on the different plans.

He almost suggested calling the police, but then realized that if she was that sort of courtesan, bringing down the cops might not be a great idea. "If it doesn't, there are ways to get them to stop."

"A director?" Ava assumed that it had something to do with the movies. "Is he one of the minstrels in the large pictures?"

She was interested in all of the different features that Henry and the salesman told her about the phones. The one that finally sold her was a red phone that she could take pictures with and check her email from work on.

When they were back outside Henry told her that there were ways to make them men stop coming to her apartment. "What ways would that be? I think that I can keep them away. I don't want anyone to get hurt."
