Who: Lorelai Gilmore and Alan Shore
When: A week ago, before Rory came home but after this
What: A serious talk
Warnings: Possible word salad

It was five o'clock and Lorelai was finishing up her workday. She was technically on call 24/7, but her staff was competent and could handle most things by themselves. Besides, nobody wanted to see Lorelai at three a.m. without coffee.

She was at the front desk, handing a piece of stationary to the night clerk. "This is from our 'special needs' guest up in 201." The term was less P.C. code for handicapped, and more 'God, this woman is high maintenance.' "Most of it's really obvious and self-explanatory, but she wanted to write it down. Don't worry too much about it, just be super-polite and it should be fine. And if you need anything, you know how to reach me." 'But please don't,' was the unspoken message.

Lorelai had been stressed. She was avoiding the man she loved with because she didn't want him to know she was in love with him--it didn't make much sense even to her--and her daughter was heartbroken and there was nothing Lorelai could do. Even bitching at the jerk who'd broken it didn't make her feel better. Tonight she was just going to stay in, order chinese food, and watch old movies.

Alan was walking downstairs to the front desk. Normally he would call down for room service, but more and more recently it was just some random employee that would run upstairs, not who he really wanted to see. He had called down earlier to find out when Lorelai was off her shift, hoping to be able to catch her without an excuse to run away.

He saw her just turning away from the front desk to leave her shift for the night and smiled at her. "Lorelai, what a surprise." He looked at his watch as if he didn't know perfectly well what time it was, "Oh! You're probably just getting off your shift, aren't you? How would you like to get dinner with me?"

"Alan!" She was a little surprised. She probably shouldn't be; it wasn't that uncommon to run into guests in your own inn. But she'd had a plan--however boring it may be--in place, and now it had changed suddenly. She glanced back at Bryce. The night clerk was always giving her problems about her topsy turvy lovelife, and how she needed 'the right guy'. It was all in jest, of course, but there was no need fueling the fire with rejecting people in front of him.

"Dinner sounds fine," she replied with a smile. Hopefully somewhere with a liquor license. It had been a long day.

"Wonderful. We have a reservation at six, so if you'd like to change we have time." He had a big smile that just shouted, 'I'm plotting something.'

Lorelai blinked, a little surprised. Again, nothing Alan did should surprise her. He was always doing something crazy. "Confident, mm?" she asked, walking toward the stairs, looking back at him as she walked. "And if I'd had other plans?"

Alan smiled, "Confident or well prepared. If you had told me no, I would have just canceled."

"That's a shame," she said, starting slowly up the stairs. "I'm sure Denny would appreciate a little wining and dining every now and then." She grinned playfully before turning to face the staircase and heading up to her room to change.

Alan smiled and watched her walk up the stairs, very much enjoying the view. He was nervous. He couldn't remember a time when he'd been so nervous before a date.

He waited downstairs for her to join him, pacing a bit before realizing he was pacing and sitting down in the entry.

He stood up every time he heard someone coming down the stairs, finally seeing Lorelai on the steps, just staring at how wonderful she looked.

As she was getting changed, Lorelai realized how happy she was that she was having dinner with Alan. She didn't want to be so excited. She didn't want to leave herself open and vulnerable. What if he was planning a breakup dinner? He wasn't the sort to break up over the phone, and he wouldn't do it in front of her staff. She wanted to be ready, in case.

She came back down the stairs in a little black cocktail dress with a nice necklace and diamond earrings. She kept her makeup and hair minimal due to time restraints--plus you didn't want to be too glammed up for a breakup date--but she looked nice. She gave Alan a smile.

"Okay, ready."

Alan smiled. He put his arm out, hopeful she'd take it.

He lead her out to his car, the car he didn't drive often, opening the door for her.

She took his arm, following him out to the car. She smiled to him, taking a seat and waiting for him to get in.

"Do I get to know where we're going?" she asked, her tone mostly cordial, with just a hint of playfulness underneath. "Or is it a surprise?" She was in a better mood than she'd expected when he first asked.

She didn't know how far they were going, and hoped she hadn't taken too long getting ready.

"Oh, yes, a surprise." He smiled over at her as he started the car. He watched the road as he drove to the restaurant. He had thought of getting a reservation at an actual French restaurant, but Chez Pierre was better than any restaurant he'd been to in France.

It wasn't long before they pulled up to the valet. He got out and handed the keys to the valet and offered Lorelai his arm again as he walked her into the restaurant.

Lorelai waited in relative patience, watching the buildings they passed. When Alan stopped the car in front of the restaurant, Lorelai turned to him in surprise. Chez Pierre? It was one of the most expensive, most popular restaurants in London. Reservations had to be booked weeks in advance.

She took his arm, looking at him with a slightly bemused look. "How long have you been planning this?" she asked. Surely a person didn't make a breakup date weeks in advance. She was feeling more confident, now.

They were led to their table and seated. This was really nice. Lorelai was going to stop trying to guess everything and just enjoy the evening. It wasn't everyday she got to go to Chez Pierre.

"Oh, I may have had something in mind for a while." He smiled at her as they walked to their table.

He sat across from her and the waiter asked for their drink orders. Alan ordered a bottle of wine for them, smiling at Lorelai, "If that's alright?" He didn't want to be one of those obnoxious dates that tried to order for his 'lady friend'.

Lorelai smiled, flattered. She was definitely glad that she'd said 'yes' to dinner.

"That's perfect," she said, nodding to the waiter. She'd already forgotten the stress of the workday. Workweek, even. She opened the menu, looking up at Alan. "I'm glad I came."

Alan smiled. It was a more honest smile than most people saw on his face, except maybe Lorelai or Denny. "I'm glad you came as well." He was so happy. He couldn't really remember being so happy. "So, what gossip do you have about the the new customers."

Oh, gossip. One of the five food groups in the town she came from. She shouldn't enjoy it so much. "Well, there's a new guest that's worse than my mother, I swear. She wanted a room with 60 percent sunshine in the afternoon, or something insane, because she's bringing some sort of exotic plant, and she has this horrible little chihuahua with this crate that looks like it probably cost more than my car."

"Anyway. How was your day at work?"

"Does the chihuahua have this horrible pink collar that you would swear is lined with diamonds?" That sounded just so familiar.

"Oh, work is interesting as always. One of our clients is being sued for 'hostile work environment,' and I'm quite certain they'll lose. I'm glad I don't have my fingers in that pot. And we have... on next to no cases at all right now. It's very slow."

He supposed the proper time to bring the subject up was over dessert. He just hoped he could wait that long.

"Oh, you've seen her?" she said with a smirk. "Disgusting, isn't it?" Of all the things someone could do with that money, a dog collar? Since she'd been an adult, she'd always been a little annoyed by the way her rich parents wasted money.. She was thankful that they'd helped Rory with school, but all of the ridiculous crap they did.. But even Emily Gilmore wouldn't buy a diamond dog collar. At least, Lorelai hoped she wouldn't.

"Yeah? Is it nice to have a little break?" Sometimes Alan seemed like sort of a workaholic. Lawyers kind of had to be, didn't they? Sixty hour workweeks, and all? She wondered if the slow pace might be driving him a little crazy.

"She was a client when I was still working here in London. I think she was suing her vet for some thing or other. She was high matenince compared to our regular clientel, I can't imagine how she is for you." He laughed a little. He thought he had seen her around and avoided her like the plague.

"Hm, if it was a real break, a vacation, it would be nice. But I still have to go into the office and look busy." He obviously wasn't happy about the break, but it wasn't the end of the world either.

"Oh, lovely," she said. The only thing worse than a high maintenance guest was a high maintenance guest that liked to sue people.

"Mmm, a vacation would be nice," she said, looking a little dreamy-eyed.

The waiter came back and Lorelai ordered a dish, managing to pronounce the French dish, just barely.

"It does sound nice, doesn't it?"

Alan ordered, French sounding almost natural, but not quite.

He made more small talk, getting harder and harder to not just let it out. Food came and they ate.

Chez Pierre's reputation was certainly not undeserved. The food was exquisite. She was a little nervous, being in a place this nice, but the lessons that were drilled into her head as a young girl seemed to stick enough for her to eat with proper manners and not make a fool of herself.

Once they were finished, the waitress came and asked if they would like dessert. Lorelai looked to Alan. "Do you wanna go somewhere else for dessert? Let's just go get snow cones or something." Dinner was amazing, but if they wanted to really loosen up and relax, they had to go somewhere more laid back and get snow cones.

It was a classic 'Lorelai' move. She couldn't have the whole date be fancy. Had to be a little down-home thing thrown in there. Nothing as amusing as watching a guy in a tie eating a sno-cone.

She waited for him to handle the check and walk her out the door. The valet approached them, but she gave him a 'just one minute!' gesture and grabbed Alan's hand. "It's not far," she said, starting to run down the sidewalk, tugging him along. She wasn't going terribly fast because of the heels on her feet. If she were in Stars Hollow still, she would've taken them off and run in her stockinged feet, but she trusted London's sidewalks less.

Alan followed her, smiling. He loved this, running down the street in their fancy clothes to go have snow cones.

They got to the stand Lorelai was leading them too and ordered the snow cones. Alan paid for them and they sat at a little round table. He made a little small talk, trying to figure out the physics of how this would work with the snow cone in his hand. He could hand it to her. Or just continue holding it and open the box in one hand. That would work. He was nervous and the conversation lulled.

He slid out of the chair onto one knee, which was now in the damp grass. Oh well.

He pulled a small box out of the pocket in his jacket and held it up to her.

"Lorelai Gilmore, you make me feel how no one else has. I love you so much it scares me. Will you marry me?"

"What?" Lorelai's eyes widened. That had been the last thing she was expecting. Then again, with everyone else going insane and her daughter getting married to a stranger, maybe she should have expected it. "You're kidding," she said with a breathless laugh. "No, you're serious, but you're insane. Alan!" It was a nice ring. "Wow. Well. At least we know eachother." And Alan was a guy. And they were obviously sexually compatible. "Sure. Why not?" She laughed again, the situation still not really sinking in. "We can have a pirate-themed wedding. You can wear an eyepatch and I can have a peg-leg and Denny can have a parrot."

Alan looked a little confused a maybe a little hurt as well. Why not? It wasn't exactly the responce he was looking for, but at least it wasn't the responce he was afraid he'd get. His smile was just a little forced.

"Ah, pirate theme does seem appropriate."

The last time they'd even talked about commitment, Alan had collapsed into word salad. And that was just about dating. Of course, she'd have been thrilled if he was really proposing to her. She loved him, and that was why she'd been distancing herself from him. She didn't want to risk messing their thing up again with more word salad. She didn't think he even wanted to date exclusively, let alone marriage.

"Let's go," she said, nearly finished with her snow cone. "I have an eye patch and some handcuffs at my place, if you're okay with mixing themes." Crazy vortex-insanity was no reason to not have sex.

Alan was getting a little frustrated at not being taken seriously. He had really gone out on a limb here, an emotional place he really never thought he'd go to again, and she was talking about pirate sex, which he had no problem with, but... did she think he was joking. Well, he couldn't blame her, he'd think he was joking. He didn't do the commitment thing, but she drove him mad. He loved her, and it had been a long time since he admitted something like that to anyone, including himself.

He forced a smile. He didn't want her to think anything was wrong, or know that he was hurt, maybe it would be good if she just thought it was a joke. He pulled her forward and kissed her. "I've never had a problem with mixing themes."

After talking to Gojyo, Lorelai had realized that Alan was serious the night before. She was embarrassed, and worried about how Alan must have been hurt by her laughing. She had been frantically trying to find Alan to straighten things out. Unfortunately, he was a little occupied at the moment.

"No, ma'am, I'm afraid you can't just--" protested the court official outside the room as Lorelai pushed past her, flinging open the doors of the courtroom. Alan was at the front of the room, giving his closing. Lorelai could feel all the eyes turn from him to her. She ran up the aisle, ignoring the judge's gavel banging, and threw her arms around Alan's neck.

She kissed him deeply, passionately, and entirely inappropriate for being in public. "Yes!" she said when she finally came up for air. "Yes, Alan."

When Alan heard someone come into the courtroom he tried to keep going, but it was quite obvious no one's attention was on him anymore. Oh well, he had pretty much won the case already.

He turned to see who it was, not really sure who to expect, and was just a little confused when he saw Lorelai. When she kissed him he was even more thrown and this yelling yes, yes Alan...

Then he realized what she meant. A smile bloomed up on his face, a real and very happy smile, and he laughed a little. "Really? Really!"

He actually tossed her up a bit and kissed her not even hearing the judge yell, "What is the meaning of this, Mr Shore!? Mr. Shore! Order! Order! I'm going to throw you both in contempt if you don't settle down at once."

But no one really heard the judge, which is why they were sitting in contempt not more than an hour later, just staring at each other.

"Really?"

It wasn't every day Lorelai found herself locked in a cell with a guy who she'd just gotten engaged to.

"Really," she said, grinning. "I'm sorry I was crazy before. Everybody was randomly getting married last weekend to people they hadn't met and it was like one of those crazy magic pirate things and I thought you were just on a spell because.. Hello! When did you get over your thing with the commitment-inspired word salad? I didn't think you would ever.." She was talking really fast, as usual. She took a breath. "I love you, Alan. I have for a while, and I've been avoiding you because I didn't think you wanted me to be."

Alan smiled. He'd been here many times before, but he was glad he was here with Lorelai this time.

"Oh, I don't really believe it either. I was just talking to Denny and I told him I was in love with you and he told me I should marry you. Which I laughed at of course, as Denny being crazy. Then he pointed out that I'd never really said that about any woman. And it made sense. I may have rushed it a little."

She laughed. "Considering we've barely even talked in a couple weeks? Might've come out of left field a little." She smiled. It was good, though. She was still a little in shock, maybe, but she was happy.

She grinned, wrapping her arms around his neck and and kissing him on the lips. "So I have Denny to thank?"
