Who: John Winchester and Sam Marquez
What: Collecting on a bet
Where: Some restaurant
When: Afternoon
Warnings: Nothing too raunchy. Nasty language.

Fact was he had no idea what he was doing. Him and Bobby had managed to wake up somewhere around the crack of noon. Watching his hungover best friend step into a doorway and disappear was something else. So that was a port key. Might be alright to use in an emergency but it wasn't something he was looking forward too.

Looked like the only way he was going to collect on his bet with Sam was going to be painful. She wanted to meet at some restaurant and normally he'd sit around inventorying his new stash of weapons but he was a little stir crazy. Hadn't been able to walk around for a few years. No time like the present... Her words were stuck in his mind and he cussed himself under his breath.

Showering and picking out some clothes of Elroy's that didn't make him want to puke he parked the Nova in front of the restaurant at the precise time she'd said she would be there. If she wasn't here he was going to leave. If she was he was...shit...he didn't know what he was going to do. He was going to get his damn smile outta her or Bobby'd never let him hear the end of it. Ducking inside he winced behind his sunglasses. Damn music was going to rattle his eyeballs out of his head.

"If you can see me in a floral print moo moo? The things that old ladies wear? I might just be offended." She bit the side of her lip just a bit to keep from smiling. He wasn't going to get her to crack that easily.

Raising an eyebrow at the mention of him calling her Samantha. "Because of your son? Sure, you can call me Samantha. Or people call me hummingbird. That might be too cheesy for ya though." She shrugged and took a swallow of her beer that the waiter brought over.

"Saying bet a lot is kind of an occupational hazard." Guess they'd have to tell each other more stuff soon. "So, tell me about yourself. What kind of stuff do you like to do?" She hoped that he wouldn't ask her the same question because all she could really say is make money.

"No, but I think our waiter is picturing you out of one." He allowed one side of his face to grin as she chewed on her lip. "Sorta doubt you get offended. But maybe I'm wrong."

"Hummingbird? Hate to be the one that tries to shorted that up. Besides I like Samantha." Watched her lift her bottle of beer, taking in a healthy swallow. She didn't look it but she was tough, it was in her eyes.

"Guess it would be." She tried to change the subject to date like questions. He wasn't wild about that. "Pretty good at killing vampires. Exorcising demons and spirits is trickier." Tapping his fingers on the table he thought for a minute. "Five favorite movies. Don't think about it. Go."

"Oh, well, isn't that sweet." Jealous, was he? Nah. Probably not the type. "Not usually. Can't really remember the last time. Maybe it was with those..." She lowered her voice. "Vampires last night. They wanted to make me part of their 'family.' What does that mean exactly? They wanted to make me one of their own kind?"

She shook her head and she couldn't help it this time, her lips curled into a smile. "Just don't shorten it to hummer. Then I might actually get offended." She laughed a little.

She was interested in what he did but he didn't seem to want to talk about it. Then he surprised her with his question. "Casablanca, History of the World... Mel Brooks, Godfather Part 2, Oceans 11... the original, The Great Race. Five favorite songs, go."

"Something tell me it'd end up more sticky than sweet." The insulting part about the restaurant was the fact the waiter wasn't even Oriental. Looked like he was a bored high school junior making cash in the summer. "Once they sucked your blood out they would have fed you some of theirs. Come sunset today you'd have woken up one of them. Allergic to the sun and deader then a doornail." Way to sugarcoat it John.

"About time." Watching her smile was worth the wait. Since she'd gone ahead and said hummer he smiled back, watching her eyes sparkle. "Can't have that." She listed off her movies and he nodded. They weren't bad. No Titanic or Beaches, which was a damn good thing.

"Led Zeppelin, second album, side one."

"Hmm, kinda sounds like my real family." Sam joked about it because that's the only thing she really could do. She was glad that she didn't end up that way. Already she thanked him, what else could she do about it?

Couldn't believe herself when she had given up so early. It wasn't that easy of a thing for her to not do today. Danny and Mary had given her back basically her old job. She was building her client list back up. And, she was having early dinner with a hot guy. Life couldn't get much better for her right now.

"Nice choice." That was when the food came and she was excited. "Now you'll find out how I got my nickname."

She mentioned her family and he froze for a second, thinking of his boys. He should be with them but he couldn't, not yet anyway. "Usually don't get a choice when it comes to family."

At least he'd gotten his smile from her. Damned if it hadn't come close to lighting the room up. The waiter came back with their plates and he eyed the meal in front of her doubtfully. "Pretty sure its going to take you about three days to put all that down." Wasn't sure how her nickname fit into all of this but he had a feeling he was about to find out. His mind slipped into a dirty place and he snickered.

"Slow down Samantha, I'm not that kind of guy. Haven't even finished our first drink yet." He figured nothing would happen with them, she was too driven to get the life she had before back as quick as she could.

Sam noticed his eyes get dark for a split second after she had mentioned family. She didn't say anything about it. They weren't at that point where she could call him on something like that and they probably never would be. "That's the truth."

Laughing at the comment about her not being able to finish her meal, "Guess you've never seen a real woman eat before." Twirling some noodles onto her fork she took a bite.

Putting back on her serious face she asked, "So you are that guy after you've had your first drink?" Yes, something would in fact happen with them. Because once Sam set her eyes on something that she wanted, she took it. John was just a bit more stubborn than most but she could be very persuasive if need be.

He picked up his beer and tipped it toward her. Talking about family wasn't something he wanted to do. She seemed content leaving that door shut now as well. Which worked pretty damn good for both of them. Watched her dig into her plate, noodles being inhaled as fast as he could blink. "Don't think they had any women like you where I came from." At least none that looked like her.

He cut into his jade chicken, the taste of real food was even better then he remembered. John and Bobby hadn't stopped to eat anything worthwhile, and he'd always loved Asian food. "Nope." He wasn't going to be that guy, not with her. "Three drink minimum. Beer doesn't count either." Slowly he bit another piece of chicken off his fork savoring the warm tender goodness. She probably thought he was weird, its not like this was a five star restaurant. But he didn't care.

"Why Godfather Part II?"

Figuring that he was probably going to ask her to elaborate on her comment on family she was happily surprised when he didn't. "Why's that?" She wondered where he came from that they didn't have real woman. Or whether if he was commenting on her ethnicity. Or the shape of her body.

"Good, huh?" She noticed that he was liking his food and she was glad for that. This place was similar to one of her favorite places back in her world. Just a little different. The old place was a little better.

"Three drinks minimum? Think I might be losing my touch." Usually it didn't take her any drinks at all to make a man want to sleep with her. Not that they usually got the chance, but they tried all the same.

"First question is, why not Godfather Part II? It's the best one of the trilogy that's why. The acting mostly. Have you seen it?"

"Get the feeling you don't lose Samantha." She was intense as all hell. He had the feeling if he was eating faster she'd make it a competition. Normally he might try and find out how tough she was but he was feeling like slowing down and smelling the roses lately.

"Best I've had since getting here." It was the truth. The food at his apartment was mostly healthy and sorta carboardish. Except for the twinkies, which weren't healthy and still cardboardish. He'd bought some milk to dunk the twinkies in, which helped make them slide down easier.

"You ever consider that someone might be interested in not banging you Samantha?" John grinned as she stopped in mid chew for that one. Now that he had his smile he wanted to see if she was full of talk about not being offended by anything. He had a feeling she was hiding behind her eyes.

"Sure I've seen it. Prefer the first one. Just don't like sequels on principal. Not that Part II is bad, its just not fresh. Its characters I've already seen, music I've already heard."

"Most of the women that you knew were losers then?" She wasn't trying to put him down or anything. Really, she just wanted to know why he thought that she was different from the other women that he had known.

Cutting a bite from her egg roll she swallowed and chewed. "It is for me too. All that was in the fridge at my place was Smart Ones, Lean Cuisines and Healthy Choice. Talk about gross. Give me this or a burger and I'm happy. Or Italian."

Samantha got the cold smirk on her face that she got whenever someone challenged her. "No, because that's never happened and it's only a matter of time." That's what happened for her. Some guy would be hot and heavy with her and then they'd fuck. After that went on for a while either she got sick of them or they got sick of her. So lately, why not speed up the process?

"The second one is where you find out why the Godfather is the Godfather though. What makes him as ruthless as he is. In the first one he's a bad ass, sure. But in the second one you see the heart of him. Why he had to be that way." She shrugged her shoulders. It sounded like she was talking about more than just a movie. But she really wasn't.

"No. You seem determined. Yesterday night you got fired and attacked by vampires. Today you've got a better job and don't seem to care about the monsters that tried to eat you." He thought about Mary and it stung. She'd been his wife and given him two sons. What right did he have being here without her?

"Nice variety. Anytime you want to trade for some stale twinkies let me know." Somehow she'd just managed to tell him what her favorite foods were without him even needing to ask. "Can't argue about loving a good thick burger. Only Italian I have much use for is pizza though. Swear its the perfect food with beer."

He watched as she took on the challenge he'd just thrown in front of her. "Time you've got. Never huh? That's something." Wasn't like he'd throw her out of bed for eating crackers or anything. He just wasn't thinking about going there.

"She was beautiful! She was young. She was innocent. She was the greatest piece of ass I ever had, and I've had'em all over the world!" Quoting the movie to her he lifted an eyebrow toward her. "They just gave him a heart to distract you from what he was. A son of a bitch." All this talk of the Godfather and family was starting to get to him.

"Life hands you lemons, you think I'm gonna make lemonade? Hell no. I squeeze them into the eyes of the proverbial thing or people that piss me off. It's really not that big of a deal. Would I rather be back in my own world where things make more sense? Sure. That doesn't mean that I'm gonna cry about it. We do the best we can with what we got and that's it." Sam then gave a little raise of her beer before finishing it off.

"Stale twinkies, huh? No thanks. Did you know that they have pretty much an indefinite shelf life they have so many preservatives in them?" Not that she cared she just liked facts. She usually didn't try and advertise that part about herself though. "Oh yeah. What's pizza without beer?"

"I don't know that and you don't know that John. Only today. Yeah it's great and all to plan but some times you just can't plan. You gotta take the day and make the most with it." She knew that he was suggesting that she'd have time to find someone that would be that way. Giving her the brush off.

"He took care of his family. That's something that not everyone can say that they've had." The conversation had taken a direction that she really didn't want it to go in. "You like sports?"

"Never have used a lemon as a weapon. Might have to try it someday." Something had turned serious here the last few minutes. He was looking at her in a way he wasn't sure he liked. She didn't know him though, and he wasn't going to start talking about himself.

"If there's ever a nuclear war, go find a twinkie warehouse. Longest lasting food source you'll find after the bombs go off." What the hell sort of thing was that to tell a date?

Shit. This wasn't one of those. "Can't beat an ice cold Michelob and a slice of peperoni. Pretty sure its heaven on earth."

She almost sounded like a damn cheerleader. Live for today? "Glad that works for you Samantha. Can't say its the way I've lived my life." Considering he'd died fighting to get revenge at the cost of anything in his way he felt like he knew what he was talking about.

"No it isn't. Don't watch sports either." Decided he was done eating and pushed his plate out of his way. Moving forward he planted his elbows on the table, staring her down. "I like shooting guns. Don't like people, crowds or the full moon. Last time I left the country there was a tidal wave that hit Asia. You want to talk to me about the Godfather? I am the fucking Godfather." He cut himself off before he scared her too much. This was a bad idea.

"Works in a pinch. But I'm around alcoholic beverages that have lemons a lot. So... unless you're in a bar with lemon wedges or in a citrus grove it might not work. It might not be timely for the person or thing you're in a fight with to have to wait for you to slice into one. Plus, if you had to carry around a ziploc baggie of them in your pocket they'd get slippery and you might not be able to grab one in time." Sam grinned letting him know that she was completely not serious but she was having fun messing with him anyway.

"I'm full of shit really. It just sounds good." She knew that she sounded like some sort of pep squad reject but at least it sounded good.

Sam waited a few beats after what he had last said. When she couldn't take it anymore she started laughing hysterically. In between giggles she did say, "Then why... did I... make you... an offer... you couldn't... refuse..." The waiter was now looking at them both like they were nuts. But she couldn't stop.

He decided not to tell her there were 317 things in this room he could kill a man with. That wasn't counting the room itself either. He almost smiled when she broke down the problems with using lemons as a weapon but he managed to keep his gruff exterior intact.

"Was starting to wonder how full of shit you were. There a class you take to get so good at it?"

She cracked up and he couldn't help the smile that took over his face. Couldn't stop cracking up after she threw a Godfather quote right back at him. Yeah, he had it coming. Damn if it wasn't nice to talk with someone who wasn't so damn serious all the time. Wheezing, he managed to get out, "Leave the gun. Take the cannoli."

A few more people were looking at them now. Nothing like causing a scene. Shit. He hadn't laughed like that in years. Not since he'd caught Dean doing the macarena alone in his hotel room one night.

"It's a talent that I was born with. We all have our strengths. Don't know what my weakness is yet, but I'm sure some day I'll figure it out." Sam hadn't had this much fun with someone in a while. He wasn't bad company.

She'd almost finished with her dinner now and when he gave the cannoli quote she said, "Ooo cannoli. I want one. Think we're in the wrong restaurant for them though." She couldn't help but laugh a little more.

"Never thought that you would be this funny when you sat down at my table last night." She was so glad that Danny and Mary were here. She would've found a way to get back to the top she knew. It just would've taken a hell of a lot longer.

The waitress came by with the check and she grabbed it since she had told him that she'd buy him a drink. "You going to come for a walk with me?"

"You really don't know what it is?" Sitting back he managed to catch his breath. Seemed pretty obvious to him what her weakness was. If she didn't know, he wasn't going to tell her though.

The waitress stopped with the check and she snagged it. He didn't care for that at all. Never had let a woman buy his meal and he wasn't about to start. He threw a pair of twenties on the table, daring her to tell him to pick them back up. "Least we have fortune cookies." They'd been left with the check and he pushed one over to her.

He picked his up and as he did spotted a vampire sitting at the bar, hitting on some girl who was about to give it up to him.

"Samantha. Its been fun. But I've got to work." Standing he left her, grabbing the guy at the bar. "Stan! Haven't seen you in years. Let's get some air and talk about the old days." Struggling in his grasp he dragged the vamp outside before it could cause a scene.

Twenty seconds later it was a pile of smoldering ash.

Ten seconds after that he slid behind the wheel of his Nova and pulled into traffic.

"No, why don't you tell me John?" When Sam asked him that he got a smile on his face and didn't say a word. She was determined to find out what he was so smug about.

When he put money down on the table she figured that she should've known that he was one of those guys. "I did owe you a drink John."

That was about the time that he got up and told her that he had to get to work. She was left with her mouth practically hanging open until she realized that it must've been a vampire that he was after.
