Who: Dick Grayson the Younger and Carrie Kelley (Grayson)
What: A contest of epic proportions
Warnings: Probably language

Robin (né Dick) was looking for Robin (née Carrie) on the rooftops. They'd agreed on a set location to commence fighting crime, one with a high crime rate and rumors of gang activity. The Batfamily usually left it alone for the same reason that they left them alone in Gotham: gang members fighting each other meant that they weren't united against anything else. Besides, Batman functioned more effectively as a myth: the fear of Batman was more frightening than the actual presence of Batman. Whenever they got a bit too ambitious, Batman usually went downtown and hurt enough people to start rumors of Batman and Robin again, then they crept back to their holes and quaked.

Criminals were a cowardly and superstitious lot.

Tonight, they were reestablishing a presence. And since Bruce had a date anyway, Robin and Robin were using this part of town for their playdate. And Robin Dick had every intention of winning over Robin Pussy.

Even more pressing than Carrie's need to get a good work out was the need to knock lil' Dick down a few pegs. The kid was a younger version of Dick, which meant that deep down he had to be a decent human being. So far, Carrie had only ever really seen him be a cocky prick and that got tiresome rather quickly. She wasn't sure if that was how her Dick had been when he'd been young. Either way, Carrie was extremly glad that there was a great difference in personality between the two Dick Graysons of this world.

She wanted to beat Dickling at something. To beat him and make it appear effortless so that he might shut his loud mouth the next time he spoke to her.

So Carrie stood in the shadows and waited for him to join her. She was hiding herself in the shadows a little, arms crossed over her chest. Silently, she worked herself up for this challenge. Lil' Dick was going down, as far as she was concerned.

"Hi," said Dick from just behind Carrie. She had the grace not to jump at the sound of his voice, but he was confident he had taken her by surprise. In truth, Dick had been lucky to spot her, and had been lucky she hadn't seen him first. He happened to be looking at just the right bunch of shadows when she moved, and she happened to be looking in just the wrong direction when he came into the light. Nine times out of ten she would have had him.

Not that he was about to admit to that.

Dick walked to the edge of the building and looked down, and came very close to gesturing that she should follow. He was clearly more comfortable as a leader than as a competitor. Despite this, he turned around and glanced at her, as if daring her to come on. "This was your invitation. Any big plans?"

Carrie wondered if it was a male thing that made him so competitive or just a bat thing. She, too, had an ego and liked to be better than everyone else. But she had the grace to realize she couldn't beat everyone at everything.

He hadn't really surprised her because she'd been expecting him to try and catch her off guard. All the men of the batfamily got hard ons for sulking in the shadows and disappearing or appearing without warning. She watched him with a smirk on her face and appeared confident but not cocky. "I think we should just count off. Whoever bags the most criminals by the end of the night wins." It was a simple game, but that made it good and fair. "That okay with you?"

"Oh, God, not this again," said Robin, who'd only been listening with half an ear. He looked down at the alley below. Since they'd been up there, a pair of gangs had gathered below. Apparently they'd stumbled into an arranged gang fight, which was something that Dick had always assumed happened only in movies.

And as he watched, he realized he'd seen each gang before. "It's the Jets and the Sharks. No, I'm not making this up. Yes, they actually call themselves that, and one gang is predominantly white, and the other predominantly Hispanic. I guess it'll be pretty easy to find crime tonight."

It was a strange world in which they lived. Carrie leaned over to catch a glimpse at the two groups. She grinned after a minute. "See the boombox?" She pointed. "If they break out into song and dance, I'll give you ten dollars."

The boys below them were working themselves up, cracking knuckles and shouting at each other. One man from each group moved forward, it looked like they were going to make the first move. "Any other stipulations to this contest or can we get cracking?" Carrie threw her legs over the ledge so she was sitting there, poised to jump.

"Just one," said Robin, as he prepared for a running jump. "Dibs on the big guy with the knife."

With that, he was over the side in a very theatrical manner. It was more dangerous and completely needless in a situation where they were vastly outnumbered, at least fifty-to-two (which is to say, the gangsters were outnumbered by the two Robins), but he had a thing about showing off, specifically the need to do it at all times.

He landed heavily on the biggest guy there, landing heavily enough to knock him down. Then he added a kick for good measure. "One!" he shouted, then he turned to the next guy. "Care to go for two?"

Carrie could be dramatic, but when compared to other members of the family, she kept things rather low key. She saw Dick flip down and she let herself fall without any sort of flair. She was in this to win, which meant she could save dramatics for later.

While gang members looked around, momentarily confused at one Robin's appearance, Carrie landed on one's shoulder and kicked him. He went down hard. While the surprise was still fresh, she hit two guys each at pressure points to knock them out. It was around then that the thugs started to get their act together. "Four," she shouted, sounding distracted, as she headbutted and then slammed the heel of her hand into the nose of someone who'd grabbed her from behind.

Standing on top of the two men he'd just taken down, Dick did his best to lure more men to him before making an all out assault. He then took his collapsible staff from his belt and grinned darkly. "Three!" he shouted, driving the end of the staff into the solar plexus of one of the Jets. "Four! Five!" Two more men went down, one gasping for air and the other bruised on the temple.

He used the staff to vault over the men, kicking one hard enough in the head to knock him unconscious. "Six! And..." He hit the wall, kicked off against it, and landed between two men. The first one to take a swing had clearly never seen any action movie ever, because he wasn't expecting it when Robin ducked and he hit his comrade instead. And from low on the ground, Robin knocked the still standing man out with an upper cut. "Eight!"

Carrie was in Shark territory, only barely glancing up at Dick. "Seven!" She shouted as her elbow connected with a face. She didn't need to draw men over to her, they were crowding her. It was typical. Carrie had the feeling it had something to do with the fact that she was a girl. Most guys who hadn't met her before completely underestimated her.

As a circle of men closed in on her, Carrie did a roundhouse kick and sent some of them sprawling. "And that's ten." She glanced up at Robin in the distance. He had a weapon. That was no good. She looked around for something to use. And then some guy tackled her. "So," she shouted at Robin, not seeming too concerned by the two hundred some pound guy on top of her, "you need a weapon? I'm not surprised that you'd need the help. I don't," she grunted. Carrie was trying to go for his ego. And for the throat of the clown on top of her. But then he grabbed her by her wrists and so she kicked him in the groin. She was back on her feet in a second, tripped a man who'd been too close and landed a foot hard on his chest. "Twelve!"

Dick launched the staff in Carrie's direction as hard as he could. It flew past her and slammed into a man who was creeping up on her with a gun. He followed after, pausing to say, "Nine," as he passed Carrie, and took down another guy stupid enough to try to steal his stick.

"Your husband uses weapons too, can you take him in--ten, eleven!--hand-to-hand?" Realizing that Carrie was attracting more attention than he was--they were probably making the mistake of targeting the girl, which generally happened when he was out with Starfire too--Dick jumped out of the way. He caught Carrie's eye and winked, then went down with a cry of pain. In the eyes of some of the smarter idiots, an injured superhero on the ground was less of a threat than a girl superhero kicking your ass, and there was almost immediately a group around him.

After a moment they parted, having realized that he seemed to have escaped in the hubbub. There was left, however, a small bird-shaped thing with a note attached.

The note read, "Boom."

It wasn't a large explosion, more like a flash bomb than anything else, but it did its job. "Twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen," said Dick.

He was such an asshole. "Thirteen!" She twirled and sent another sprawling. "Fourteen! Is there no honor among sidekicks anymore? Tim would have tried to take me down," she grunted, "without needing help from the tech in his belt." That was a lie. Probably. She reached for something hanging on her hip.

Carrie threw three electrified batarangs. As each hit their marks, the men tumbled with shouts. "Seventeen." Someone behind her moved suddenly. She knew the hit was coming before she felt the fist against her shoulder, but she couldn't dodge in time. She'd have a nice little bruise in the morning. Carrie used her other arm to elbow the guy in the face. "Eighteen." She then turned to face the another guy who was quickly advancing upon her with a wicked looking switchblade in hand. He came closer and Carrie stole his knife used his forward momentum to trip him and send him knocking into three of his friends. Or enemies.

It was dark. Colors were hard to distinguish. And by now it's turned into a jumbled gangster free for all.

"Twenty-two." It would be close, but Carrie was still relatively confident that she could win this. "And this," she closed and threw the switchblade hard and sent it flying past Dick's head. It landed on the forehead of a thug who'd been coming for the Boy Wonder, "is twenty-three." She puckered her lips and blew Dickling a kiss. He wasn't the only insufferable prick in the family.

"Well, maybe I could teach you. After I get down kicking your ass." He brought down a heavy steel toed boot on the nose of two gang members who had decided to abandon old grudges and assault him personally. It was almost heartwarming. "Eighteen!" One of the men fell immediately, the other stumbled back and knocked a third into a brick wall, headfirst. They both went down. "Make that nineteen."

They were running out of people, and Carrie still had a higher body count. She took them down quicker. But he took them down better, which would have counted in any other scenario. Dodging an assault from a man who thought he knew something about sneaking up, Robin rolled over his back, driving an elbow into the back of the man's neck. "Twenty!"

There were three more men close enough for him to attack directly, but too far away for each other to hit them all in the same attack. So instead, he planted his staff between the legs of a fallen attacker for stability, and used it to vault towards the closest gang member, kicking him hard enough to push himself back. He used the momentum to swing into the second man, who was hit straight on. The third, who'd been watching this and probably knew what to expect, discovered that he was wrong when Dick flipped backwards, grabbed his staff, and brought it down straight on the man's face. "Twenty-three!"

If she had to give him some credit, it would be that he did his theatrics well. She would have been impressed with his moves if she hadn't spent years with Batman and if she hadn't seen her Dick do the same sort of things better. "Twenty-four!" She punched someone in the throat. "Five." Another man went tumbling. "Six." She kicked someone behind her.

"Aw, crap." There was a guy with a gun. She could tell from the shot that missed her by a mile. He had terrible aim. "You guys suck," Carrie said before backflipping towards him. She got the piece away from him quickly and then knocked him upside the head. "Seven!" It was getting hard to walk around and not step on unconscious or wounded gangsters.

They were quickly running out of bad guys and though Carrie was ahead of Dickling, she wasn't ahead enough. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw a few smart thugs trying to make a run for it. She threw bolas in their direction and sent the one farthest away tumbling. When two of his friends tripped on him, Carrie sent a shock through the bolas. "Thirty!"

Dick threw a birdarang at the last idiot foolish enough to get in his way. It curved upward and to the left as the criminal winced. "You missed!" he crowed. The criminal took a butterfly knife from his pocket and flipped it open in a very impressive gesture.

"Been practicing that in the mirror, have you?" Dick sneered. "And by the way."

Before Dick could finish his thought, there was a sharp thud as the birdarang continued its trajectory in the back of the man's head. "It's called a birdarang for a reason. Twenty-four!"

Robin spun around, staff at the ready in one hand, prepared to take down a few good (bad) men, only to find that there were none left standing. Dick suspected that they hadn't actually knocked out all of these men; more than likely a few of them took a glancing blow and decided to lay down and hope the cops arrived. "Damn. I hate losing."

Carrie looked around. She was impressed by how many guys they'd taken down in the short amount of time they'd been fighting. Someone groaned as she took a step closer to Dickling and walked over a body. There was a grin on her face. "I'm sorry, I missed that. What do you hate doing?"

Oh yes, she was going to be bragging about this for quite some time if she could get away with it.

"I hate losing. And you heard me just fine." It was so tempting to throw down the gauntlet right now and regain some of his damaged pride. Three things stopped him. First, being able to pretend to be a good sport would make it less fun for Carrie to tease him. Secondly, sparring was for free time; they were on the job, even if they were abusing their authority slightly.

And most importantly, he wasn't sure he would win. Dick was a better martial artist, that much he was sure of. Carrie had really good moves, but she tended to stick to a handful of disciplines that worked, while Dick did everything. But she was probably the better fighter, at least for now. Maybe three times out of five he could beat her, but he didn't need that kind of estimate hanging over his head.

And moreover, she regularly sparred with and fought alongside someone who fought much like Dick did, except that he was better at it. Dick fought alongside Batman, whom he could only hope to emulate, and Starfire, who used brute strength rather than technique ninety percent of the time. It all came down to preparation, and despite his superior experience, she was better prepared.

"Damn," he muttered. "I'm going to win next time."

"Of course you will," Carrie said, fighting to keep a straight face and losing. She looked around at the thugs on the ground. "What have we learned tonight, gentlemen?" She shouted at them, expecting that at least some of them were conscious enough to hear. "Aside," she lowered her voice so that only Dick could hear, but kept her eyes off of him, "from the fact that I can totally school the youngin', of course." There was that smirk again that she just couldn't hide.

"Anyone?" No response except for a very loud groan of pain from someone underneath her feet. "Say it with me now, boys: Crime does not pay. Pass it on and tell all your friends!"

"She calls me cocky," remarked Dick to one of the prone baddies. Or supine, rather. He was supine. "Oh, you're unconscious." Dick called the cops and left an address for a lot of gang members who were currently looking for a lot of arrests.

"Come on, the cops are on their way." Dick wasn't rushing her in the hopes that she would stop talking about his humiliating defeat and crushed spirit. Not at all.

Carrie didn't really need to be told twice. She reached for her line gun and shot off, still smirking at her win. She swung and landed on a nearby roof, making a very smooth landing.

"So," she said, "Where are you headed now?" It was pretty early on in the night. Carrie planned to get some more crime fighting in.
