Who: Ava and Henry
Where: San Diego.
When: Now.
What: Henry coming to help Ava.
Warnings: Probably not.

Henry knew he was supposed to be on vacation, but there was nothing wrong with this. What could go wrong? He was just going to help a girl that clearly was from a world, or a time, where technology was still in its infancy, or where it didn’t exist at all. So long as there were no ghosts or demons or zombies everything would be fine. Besides, it wasn’t like he was doing much of anything besides hanging out at the Coronado Beach Resort.

After talking with Ava on the forums, he’d closed up his laptop and gone back to his roo to change. He threw on a typical bluish-white button-up shirt, a white sleeveless shirt, a pair of cargo shorts, and his slightly faded sneakers. He’d brought one of his cars with him on vacation, so he hadn’t bothered taking a cab. It was a red Saturn Skye, and the top was down. Cars were one of the few luxuries Henry allowed himself, and this one was particularly awesome. He’d left his XM unit in his room at the resort, though. He didn’t want to shock her with modern heavy metal.

He checked the GPS on his phone to find the shortest route to the address she’d provided, and reached it in less than twenty minutes. It was an apartment complex, and he checked the address again for the room number. Then he parked in visitor parking and proceeded into the building. He asked a passerby what floor the room he was looking for was on, and then headed up to the third floor in the elevator. He found the apartment he was looking for without trouble, and knocked three times before letting both hands slide into his pockets to wait.

Henry smiled and bowed his head. "Thanks. It's nice to meet you in person, Ava." He wasn't sure what she'd meant about her clothes being constricting, she looked pretty comfortable in them. The color looked good on her. "So, do you want to stay here or would you rather go out? I can tell you there is definitely one thing that you should learn outside, but it's not time-sensitive or anything. So whichever you want to do is fine by me." He hoped she wouldn't freak out too much when she saw a car. While it would probably be comical, it would probably be embarrassing for her, and Henry wanted to avoid that if possible.

Ava made a small curtsy to him bowing his head and she stood to the side to let him into her residence. "Would you mind helping me figure out what some of the objects in this place are? The names and the like? Then we may go outside."

Walking into her living room their were several things. There was a desk in the corner where her computer sat upon. She did not, however, know what it's name was. In the middle of the opposite wall was an entertainment center with a tv, dvd player, and stereo on it. She also did not know what any of those things were.

First she pointed to her computer. "What is the name of the screen, box, and flat contraption? They appear to be all connected together and I knew that I pressed letters to make words earlier. I do not know any of their names."

Henry smiled and followed her in, nodding as she spoke. "Sure." He glanced around, taking in everything that was out in the open and identifying it in his head. It was a nice place, and reminded him of room 302 back home...before all the hauntings, anyway.

"Well, people usually call all that stuff 'computer'. It's a machine, designed to do multiple complex computations, and also to store all different kinds of information. You can access the internet from it." He had to fight the urge to make the joke about the internet being a complex series of tubes. "The box itself is where all the storage and computations actually are. The screen is the monitor, which displays stored information and content you access for you to see. The flat thing is the keyboard, that's what you were using to type out words."

The TV was going to take a little more explaining, but it was as good a place as any to start. He turned and pointed it out. "That box is called a television. It...well, you've seen plays, right? These days, we have devices that can record the plays and then broadcast them through the air. You use your television by turning it to the channel that the play you want to watch is being broadcast on." The explanation was a little simplistic and didn't cover everything, but it was good enough for now. "The smaller box is a DVD player. DVD is another way of recording plays, though these are usually longer than the ones you see on television. They're little circular discs, and you put the disc containing the play you want to watch into the DVD player."

Then he turned to the stereo. "That's called a stereo. The same way television programs are broadcast, music is broadcast, and stereos can tune in to the right channel to hear the music being broadcast." Then he gestured to the entertainment center. "That's called an entertainment center, and it's used to keep your television, DVD player, and DVDs in one place. That way you don't have to look for it, it's all in one place."

He turned back to her and smiled again. "Let me know if you want me to go over any of that again, okay? I know it's a lot to digest."

Ava listened intently to everything Henry was saying. She was taking mental notes and she hoped that she would remember everything by the time he was through.

When he described the computer she nodded. "What is the thing that fits in your hand on the cord that hooks into the box called? It clicks." She figured that it was almost as useful as the thing that you typed words into. Maybe more so.

He started to talk about the television and she started to get confused. Walking up to it she took a closer look running her hands over it. There was a button on the bottom of it that said, 'power.' She, of course, pressed it. When a loud blaring voice came on she jumped backwards and said, "Orbis!" A glowing circle went up around her, protecting her. Once she realized that the people were not going to hurt her she blushed crimson and flicked her hand lowering her circle.

"I was not expecting that." She walked back over to it and gingerly turned off the tv. Listening to the rest of his explanation. "The stereo and tv do not really have miniature minstrels inside, just pictures?" She thought that she had it right but she wasn't sure.

Henry nodded at her, smiling again. "That's right. The cameras record moving pictures, basically, and then broadcast them to the television. And the music is previously recorded, and broadcast over the stereo by people running the radio shows." Then he looked back over at the computer, glancing at the mouse. "That's a mouse. We cal it that because, well, it kind of looks like a mouse." He chuckled at that and added, "Not the most scientific explanation, I know, but it's true."

Ava was glad that Henry had not seemed to take notice of her being alarmed over the television. When he explained the mouse she could see what he meant. It did sort of look like a mouse. "That is logical."

She tilted her head to the side looking up at him, "Is there anything else you feel needs explanation?"

Henry had noticed, but he'd also noticed her blush. He didn't want to make her feel uncomfortable, so he just let it pass. The fact that it was magic wasn't all that shocking, he'd seen far more flashy things in his time. Deep Ones, Walter Sullivan, Britney Spears holding on to a shred of her popularity various Hollywood oddities... "Hm..." He glanced around, nothing coming to mind right away. "Well, did you have any other questions about anything in here? If not, we could head outside."

"I am confident that I will be able to figure out what I need to in here. Outside is fine. If I do not know what some thing is in the future, may I ask you again?" Ava hoped that she would be able to. Since he was the only other soul that she knew here she might need him to.

Henry nodded, and without thinking began to give her his cell phone number. He stopped himself, thought about it for a minute, and then pulled out his cell phone. "Do you know of any spells that allow instantaneous communication with someone else? These are like that, only they use technology instead of magic. They're called cell phones. Each phone is assigned a number, and when you dial a number on yours and hit send," he flipped his open and showed her the send button, "it will connect you to the person who has the phone that was assigned that number."

Then he pulled out his pen and pocket-sized notepad and wrote down his number. He tore the sheet off and handed it to her, depositing his phone, notepad, and pen back into his pocket. "Call this number if you need to talk to me, and unless I'm, uh, indisposed, I'll answer." He figured indisposed was better than saying "unless I'm being murdered by a cultist". Statistically his profession did tend to lead to that sort of problem.

"Of course." She replied to him asking her if she knew any telepathic type of spells. On her desk, she thought she had seen something similar to what he was holding. Walking over there she picked up what he had called a cell phone. When he handed her his phone number she instantly wanted to try it out. Looking at the paper and the phone she quickly punched in the numbers and hit send just like he had said to do. She giggled a little when his phone rang.

"Thank you so very much Henry. I am learning so many things. Shall we go outside now?"

Henry chuckled and waved it off. "Don't worry about it. Nobody should have to deal with being in a new world on their own." He smiled and nodded, letting her lead the way. It was her home, after all. "I should warn you. There's been some pretty serious development in vehicle technology. I'll be able to explain better when we get out there, but just be prepared for a shock." He hoped she understood he was serious, because the last thing he wanted was for her to embarrass herself by freaking out outside, where people could actually see it.

At that moment, Ava decided that she liked Henry. Part of what she liked about him was that he was very kind. She had not had anyone or anything be kind to her in a very long time.

"Thank you for the warning." Looking down at his feet she realized that she probably would have to put shoes on again. "Guess I'll need those foot prison things on my feet again." She huffed a little sliding her tiny feet into the high heels shoes that she had shown up in. With a flick of her hand she was back in the clothes that she was in before as well. "And the clothes that are common here."

After she was done with that she walked to her door. Once they had stepped out she touched the dead bolt and she heard it lock.

Henry blinked at how easily she changed clothes. That must come in handy, he thought to himself. It was like a superhero quick change without the phone booth. He glanced down at her high heels as they walked towards the elevator. "Y'know, you don't have to wear those kinds of shoes. There are more comfortable kinds, and since it's summer, you could even wear sandals." He figured she wasn't fond of the shoes from the way she referred to them as 'feet prisons'.

Pointing to her feet she figured that he was talking about her shoes. She didn't know the word for them though. "I will have to see what other women are wearing once we get outside. You will have to excuse my ignorance. I have not worn... shoes, you said? In a very long time." Mostly because she had no need to where she had been. Her feet never touched the ground.

They got outside and at first she was taken aback by how loud it was outside of her building. She saw the metal box looking type things and assumed that those were the cars that he had spoken of. Stopping, she just stared at them curiously for a few moments. "This is all very interesting. I have heard of automobiles, mostly listening to conversations between the demons. But it is a different experience to actually see them."

After a while a group of women past by them. They were dressed in less constricting clothes than that of what she was wearing but they were wearing leggings of some sort. She changed her clothes to that of a t-shirt, a pair of jeans, and a pair of flip flops. "That is much more comfortable than what I had on."

Henry almost told her not to be so blatant about her magic, but then stopped himself as the portkeys occurred to him. They were common knowledge, so magic really wouldn't be all that shocking for most people. "Yeah, I don't get some of the clothes people wear," he chuckled. Hello monkey suits, Henry is looking at you. "Yeah, that's them. Cars revolutionized the way people move around. Sadly," a note of irritation entered his words, "there doesn't seem to be an IQ test before people get a license. Some people really shouldn't be allowed to drive." After a moment, he turned and looked at her, grinning a little. "Want to go for a ride in one?"

"I have never driven even when I was not a familiar. My father had never let me. Things were far different than this though. We had large beasts that the valets steered."

Thinking about his question she really did not have to think long. Of course she wanted to go for a ride in one. "I would love to." She told him with a grin on her face.

Henry grinned and nodded, leading her over to his car. "This one is mine. This type of car is called a convertible, because it's top can fold up, so you can drive it either with the top up or the top down." He reached out and opened the passenger door for her, and then went around and hopped into the driver's side. "Top down is way more fun," he told her, with a little grin on his face. Henry liked cars, he couldn't help it. He quickly pulled his keys out of his pocket, and then buckled up, making sure to call her attention to it. "Be sure you buckle your seatbelt when you're in a car, whether you're a passenger or a driver. If you get in an accident, that belt is what's going to keep you safe." After a moment he looked over at her and added, "Now if I start going too fast for you, just let me know and I'll slow down. I don't want your first ride in a car to be a nerve wracking experience."

Ava looked at his car. Instantly, she decided that she really liked the convertible. "It is very shiny." She said admiring the paint while she got in after he had opened the door for her.

Following his lead, she put her seat belt on. "I think I shall like going fast. Please start slow though."

Henry nodded, started up the car, threw it in reverse, and backed out of the parking spot he'd chosen earlier. Then he headed for the exit, merging in with the flow of traffic easily. "Okay, I'm gonna start picking up speed..." Occasionally glancing over at her to keep track of how she was handling it, he began to speed up, slipping over into the fast lane so he'd have a little more freedom with how fast he could go. The speed climbed, fifty to sixty, and then sixty to seventy-five. A slow smile had started creeping up his face at around forty-five, and now it was just a soft little smile. He hadn't gone for a drive just to drive in a while. "Remember, if you want me to slow down, just say the word and I will."

Ava smiled as he pulled out of his parking space and moved forward. Her hair was whipping around more the faster he was going. She felt a tingling sensation in her abdomen as the car picked up speed. Laughing a little she clapped her hands. "This feels wondrous."

Henry was glad that she was enjoying it. It'd been a long time since he'd been able to legitimately make any kind of difference, and it felt so good to be able to do something that mattered again. His brush with the eldritch creatures of Lovecraft's writings had left him feeling totally insignificant in an uncaring universe, and slowly he'd been giving in to despair, each event after that run-in adding one more nail to an already nailed coffin.

"It's a rush," he chuckled, nodding. "This is why most teenagers you'll see these days can't wait to get their drivers license." He pondered it briefly. "You might have one in your name, actually. If your ID had a picture, that's probably what it was." He quickly added, "You don't have to use it if you don't want to, but if you do, I could teach you how to drive." The offer was out of his mouth before he even thought about it, and when he did think about it, he realized he would have made the offer anyway. "If you want, I mean."

"It does feel as if I am almost soaring like a bird." She put a hand out the window and one up in the air and closed her eyes for a few seconds.

"It did have a portrait of myself on it. I think I would like to learn how Henry. Not immediately, but soon. That would be most kind of you."

She was trying to figure out the word for what she needed to ask him. Since her home was very humble she knew that she needed a way to support herself. "How... I am trying to think of the word for what I am trying to say. How does one know... occupation! How does one know what their occupation is here?"

Henry smiled as she put her arms up. He was glad she was enjoying this. "Whenever you're ready to learn, just let me know." He was glad she didn't want him to go too fast. He wasn't sure what he'd tell the cops, but truthfully? Seeing the look on her face would be worth it.

At her question, he furrowed his brow a little as he thought. "Well, you might have some kind of work ID either at home or on you. If not, you might have some kind of uniform at home. And if not that, then I could try searching your name on the internet to see if any information comes up, if you're comfortable with that."

"I will, Henry. Thank you so much for your kindness. I know that I have said that many times already, but I really feel it." Ava would not ask Henry to go faster. She had been subserviant for so long it would take a lot for her to ask anyone to do anything for her. Unless it was something that was absolutely impossible for her to find out or do on her own.

"That would be comfortable for me for you to do that if we need to." She thought for a moment. "What happens if you have a job that is not suitable for you?"

"Don't worry about it. As long as it's helping, then that's all I really need." Henry smiled and waved off any further mention of thanks. He was glad that traffic wasn't too bad today, and that no one was driving too badly. The last thing Ava needed was to see bad drivers on her first car trip.

"Well, you could always find a new one." He shrugged a little at that. "You never have to stay at a job, although it is a good idea to find a new one before leaving the current one. That way you won't risk going without a paycheck." He figured she would want to know how to go about finding jobs, so he continued, "There are things called 'want ads' in the paper every day. Employers place small advertisements there when they're looking to hire someone for a specific job. Reading those is a good way to find a job. You could also check the forums - that's where you and I first talked - and see if anyone there is hiring." He cocked his ead a little in thought and then glanced over at her. "It's good to have a general idea of your skills when you're looking for a job. I know you're good with magic, but what other things are you good at?'

Ava listened to everything that Henry said, taking all of it in. Everything he said was useful and she acknowledged that she would have to use it later. When he asked her what she was good at she was not sure where to start. Everything that she was good at stemmed from her power usually, her magic.

"Organizing, negotiating contracts and deals, cooking, cleaning, basically everything I had to do for the demon. I do not think I know of much else." Usually she used her powers for all of those things but she was sure that she could do it also without the use of her powers if need arose.

Henry considered that for a few minutes. "Y'know, I run a paranormal investigation agency. People who are being terrorized by paranormal phenomena call us and we try and take care of it for them." After a moment he continued, "I could use an assistant. Someone to take calls, collect the details from the clients, that sort of thing." He quirked his eyebrow, grinning a little. "If you're interested, I mean."

He smiled, reaching one hand over to pat her shoulder gently. "I'm glad to have you on board." He left his hand to rest on her shoulder for a second, as a comforting gesture, and then put it back on the stick shift. "Now that you mention it, I was thinking of setting up some sort of non-violence spell in the offices and safe houses. Sort of a 'do no harm within these walls' type spell. Do you know an spells like that?"

Smiling at his touch to her shoulder she tilted her head in his direction when he started to talk business.

"Hmm... the spell would need some preparing but it should be elementary enough for me to do easily. I've spun a spell that prohibits demons from doing harm to one another. I will just have to adjust it to include everyone."

Already Ava was making a mental list of what ingredients she might need for such a spell. Valerian, passion flower and hops for calming. Dragonsblood root for the shock if someone dares harm another. Redwood disks for invoking... and she would figure out something for humans.

There was one thing that he might take issue with. "If someone dares to preform a violent act against another the only way to stop it is for them to receive a shock right before the violence occurs. It would not hurt them permanently, but it would definitely make them feel something. Is that a problem?"
