Who: Jon Kent and Rei Hino
What: A long overdue date
Warnings: Shit yeah.

Jon was happy to finally get a few minutes just to fly. Lately it had been fly to school, run home, get to work, do homework, try to stop a few bullets, and spend the remaining time talking to Rei and lusting after roleplaying products (he was a multitasker, and could occasionally spare a few to lust after Rei, too.) He hadn't been able to do anything with Rei. Even Kryptonians need sleep.

He did a few loops as he floated lazily across the Atlantic ocean. Of course, in his case, "lazily" was in excess of a thousand miles a minute. It was nice. He was going out with his girlfriend, he had a present (two) and he'd put on his nice pants. And, of course, it was a beautiful day in late spring and he was deeply in love.

He touched down outside Rei's apartment and knocked on the door. He knew it was unlocked, and that she wouldn't mind if he just walked in without permission, but Jon's daddy had raised him right. His hair still wind-swept from flying, his arms loaded down with gifts both silly and romantic, he waited.

She kissed him firmly, all but hopping upward to wrap her arms around his neck. She knew that people probably looked at them funny when they were in public, what with their hight differences. "Should've gotten me a stool," she laughed. "But I've wanted this for ages! Want to try it out?"

She took the steamer into the kitchen, calling out over her shoulder. "I'm good! How've you been?"

It was a shame that he was the one that could fly. If he could have taught her how, he would have; all the more kissing for him. "Sounds good. When you invited me for sushi, I thought you meant out for sushi. Can I help?" Jon was eighty percent sure that he wasn't supposed to help, but a) they weren't in Japan, b) she wasn't just some Japanese girl, she was his girlfriend, and c) despite her being a miko, she'd never particularly struck him as too obsessed with tradition anyway.

He slipped his shoes off and followed her into the kitchen. "I've been busy. I'm not as busy now. I mean, you know it's a hard day when I can't even look to the east for a few minutes a day to watch you dance to J-pop in your underwear anymore."

Rei stopped when he mentioned looking to the east to watch her dance. She buried her face in her free hand and laughed. "I can't believe you watch that." She shook her head and laughed, motioning him into the kitchen.

"I'm not as good at cooking as a lot of people, but my friend Makoto from back home showed me some things. And with a rice cooker, it'll be easier. I did mean for us to go out, but we might as well stay in now." She poked him teasingly in the ribs, and winked at him. "Next time we're apart for long periods, I'll make sure to do more than dance."

"It's a nice way to escape from the drudgery of studying," said Jon. "Besides, it's not like I do it all the time. Just sometimes. And if you didn't want me watching you dancing you'd be wearing more than just your underwear," he added. Both of them knew full well that he could see her naked anytime he felt like it.

She'd never answered him as far as help went. He decided to press his luck. "I'm not much of a cook. But I can help in any way I can. Reaching for things. Getting ingredients. I can find some very fresh fish."

"It's not like you can't see my underwear whenever you want," she teased, sticking out her tongue at him.

She set up the rice cooker on the counter, grinning over at him. "Do you mind going to get some fish? Whatever kind you'll want for sushi. I'll get started on the rice." She leaned up to kiss him as high as she could reach, which half the time (unless he was bending over) ended up being his clavicle or shoulder.

"I'll hurry back," said Jon, diving out a nearby open window.

Jon usually just flew from place to place, but this time he wanted to move as quickly as possible, so he flew into space. It meant that he didn't have to worry about his speeds negatively affecting the atmosphere around him. Then he flew to Yokohama, on the grounds that it was bright enough that the fish markets were open in Japan, and he didn't have to fake having a bad Japanese accent there. Yokohama had a relatively large multicultural population.

He landed outside one of the smaller markets and strode through, looking for the freshest he could find. Jon could almost hear the freshest meat; sight and smell were, needless to say, beyond measure as far as utility went. He chose a likely looking vendor and said, in a perfect Tokyo accent, "Hello, sir. Can you tell me which fish would be best for sushi? My girlfriend is waiting for me to pick some up."

"I know what that's like," said the other man in perfect English. "Here. You might try the toro. Tuna belly. Full of flavor."

Jon, a bit thrown by the slight informality and the language altogether, stuck with Japanese. "Um. Thank you. When was it caught?"

"Oh, the boat came in maybe two hours ago. We just finished filleting it. Fresh as you'll get without fishing yourself." That had occurred to Jon, but he couldn't swim. Besides, he wasn't entirely comfortable with the idea of killing his own food. His father was a farm boy, but the only thing Jon had ever killed was corn.

They negotiated a price (Jon always paid a little bit more than he knew he could have gotten away with) and he flew back. "I am man," he said, landing in Rei's kitchen. "I have hunted the wild tuna. I have emerged victorious."

Rei blinked, then burst into giggles. "I know you can - I mean, tuna's an animal, and it's wild - but I've just never heard anyone put it that way." She nodded toward a cabinet. "Does my Man want to cut up the wild tuna?"

She was reading the instructions on the rice maker, figuring out where to put things and which buttons to press. "I'm not a very good cook, but I figure if I mess up too horribly, we can always go back to that going out option."

"Well, you've never gone shopping with me." Jon and Mia had a different approach to food shopping from most people. Mia was a better chef than anyone Jon had ever known, so his task was mostly to fetch the freshest of ingredients available. Supermarkets were for the weak and the permanently terrestrial.

"I can cut." He was glad that Rei let him help. Traditions were all well and good, and his father had taught him to respect the viewpoints of different people, but it didn't really appeal to him, sitting there waiting for her to cook. In as much as anyone actually "cooked" sushi.

Rei smiled and moved the rice around with a fork before turning on the cooker. She looked at Jon, grinning. "Show me what you can do. I'm not a good cook, so this is pretty much on your shoulders."

"Well, okay. But if I cut myself, I'm blaming you for buying Kryptonite knives. Because that's unlikely." Jon looked at the sushi knife and sharpened it between two fingers. This mostly consisted of squeezing the edge of the blade until it was compressed enough to threaten the fabric of space time. Then he used it to cut fish.

"How big am I supposed to do this?" he asked. "I've only ever seen them do it at restaurants before. And while it's very impressive watching them go 'wha! wha tah! sushi flip to mouth!' I don't actually know how."

It was one of the rare times Rei got to stick her tongue out at Jon. She took advantage, and blew a firm raspberry in his general direction.

She didn't have an answer to his question. "Makoto said the length of her thumb, but yours are huge. I don't know. Maybe there's a recipie online?" She wiped her hands off on her jeans and bounced to the living room to look it up.

Jon almost pointed out that in the time it took her to look it up, he probably could have flown to a sushi restaurant and asked someone how big he should slice the fish. But that would have been needlessly complicated, really. Besides, his hair was still messy from the last adventure through the stratosphere.

"My thumb isn't huge," said Jon, looking at his thumb. "Yours are just tiny. Why don't I just measure by your thumbs? I can estimate. Or just use the length up to the knuckle." He followed after her and took her by the hand, examining her thumb. "I don't know. The only thing I've ever noticed about your fingers is that they're perfect for this." He kissed her hand and grinned at her.

"YOur everything is huge," Rei said, coming back with a printout. Fortunately for her she had some of the seaweed wrap it called for, and before she could go to the fridge to get it, he had her hand in his huge paw.

Blushing when he kissed her hand was par for the course, and she swatted at his bottom playfully. "Slick, Jon."

He blushed too, mostly because he wasn't quite slick enough to pull that kind of move off. "I'll work on that fish," Jon said, returning to the cutting board. He'd read the instructions over Rei's shoulder.

The important thing seemed to be a clean cut, which didn't seem difficult. Jon's knife was sharp, and the fish was fresh (which was also very important). He began moving slowly enough to be watched, which wasn't his normal modus operandi, but breakneck speeds had their place and their place wasn't with Rei. He liked spending as much time with Rei as possible.

Rei nodded, reading instructions on how to roll the rice, and she busied herself with getting the seaweed wrap out of the fridge.

She watched Jon slice the fish, smiling at how careful he was. "You're good at that. Have you been a sushi chef without telling me?"

"Hai! I trained under the Iron Chef. They call me the Tin Sous-Chef. It's not as glamorous a title." Jon kept slicing and, because he was distracted trying to show off to the pretty girl, his thumb got right under the blade. It went clean through.

Which is to say, the thumb went clean through the blade.

"Whoops." Jon eyed the now mangled piece of hardware. "I can fix it." He heated the blade with his heat vision and then molded the now pliable metal with his fingers. "Done." He blew on it to cool it, and when it began to "ting!" he put it down. "Okay, that needs to cool or it'll cook the fish. Anything else I can be clumsy with? I'm sorry. By the way."

Rei tried not to laugh at his statement, then blinked when he cut the knife. She folded her arms, watching him fix the knife with his heat vision.

"I'm kind of glad I'm on your good side, Mister Clumsy." She went over to kiss him, then motioned him toward the rice. "You can shape the rice, if you want." She went over to the knife and started cutting the fish herself.

"You're fireproof anyway. It'd probably just tingle. Might be something to try when you're naked one of these days." Jon winked and set to work on the rice. This much he could accomplish. It was fun, in a way. Most of what he did that was useful involved being able to punch a hole through a mountain. This required the exact opposite: a gentle touch. Minimal force.

The recipe called for about a handful, but, as Rei was quick to point out, he was a large dude. So instead he made half-handfuls. "I can't believe I broke a knife. Again. I don't know how Mia keeps from doing it, she's stronger than I am."

Rei's eyebrows arced high, and she giggled. "I am fireproof, but you're... super fire. It might not react the same way." She continued to slice the fish, taking care not to slice off her fingers.

"Well, you said she was a good cook, maybe it has more to do with experience?"

"Well, that, and she's not me." Jon was a bit of a klutz at normal speed. Moving at relativistic speeds, he was fine. The second he got below a few hundred miles per hour, he was tripping over his own shoelaces midair, which wasn't even possible.

"There's probably other ingredients, right? Vegetables or wasabi or whatever. I've never really researched what goes into sushi."

Rei moved closer to him to kiss him, grinning. "I'm glad about that part." Mia was her friend, sure, but she didn't have any interest in her. Not like Jon.

After consulting the recipe, she nodded toward the fridge. "You're supposed to add vinegar, sugar, and salt to that while it's in the cooker."

"I can do that!" Jon felt a little bit silly being so excited to be presented with a task that he could effectively manage, but aside from fresh ingredients, his role in food preparation was largely to eat it. Besides, it was the cutest--dare he say, wutest?--rice maker in the known world.

Jon followed the given instructions, making sure the rice was fluffing as it should have been. Or sticking. Jon didn't know what rice was supposed to do, but he did it anyway.

Rei smirked. Jon's enthusiasm was adorable, and she didn't want to rub it in that he was cute. Instead, she continued slicing fish. After she thought she had enough, she went to the fridge to retrieve the nori to roll everything up in. It was her favorite way to eat sushi.

"So, what have you been up to? It feels like it's been a while since we talked face to face."
