Who: Solvei Samuels and Kyle Rayner What: Dinner, painting hanging and talking Where: Sol's place When: After this. Warnings: Violence in the post. Some friskiness.
All of the days had been running together lately for Solvei. It'd been a few nights ago now that her and Kyle had stayed up all night talking. She'd been present with running the bakery but really she felt as though she was just really staying busy to get by. The nights were hardest for her. She still hadn't even tried to sleep in the huge bed that was in her bedroom. So she tried to sleep on the couch. When that didn't work, she read.
The person that she had replaced had the oddest collection of books. It did not bother her really since none of them were really books that she'd pick up on her own. That made them all new and different to her.
When she wasn't reading at night she was out patrolling. She felt sloppy though, and she was, especially last night. She'd come across a pack of Sre'Taedik demons on the shores of North Cove as she was walking along the docks. They were nasty demons who liked to kidnap kids. They kidnapped them for the soul purpose of eating their fingers and toes. They were large demons, usually around seven or eight feet tall that shot nerve numbing venom darts from their wrists. Don't think about how many kids fingers and toes it takes to fill their bellies. It will hurt your brain. After eating the fingers and toes they killed them and tossed their bodies aside to rot.
She had tracked them to their hiding place and she knew that they usually had eight to twelve pack members. Normally, she would've known better then to go into their underground living area by herself. But she knew what they hunted and ate so she charged in there with nothing but her will to save as many kids as she could and a small hand ax as a weapon. It didn't matter to her that much that she only had the ax because she was a weapon herself.
There were only two children that were left still alive in cages. It looked bleak for quite a little while but she prevailed. Once she had gotten the kids out of the lair she took them to the nearest hospital in her arms. One of the kids was a little girl no more than three. The other was a little boy she assumed was four that was screaming for his brother the whole way to the hospital. His brother hadn't survived she assumed.
She smooth talked the nurse into admitting them into the hospital by saying that she had found them crying in an alley. There was no way that the nurse believed her story. Solvei felt half dead herself. She was covered in bruises and could barely walk. The venom of the one dart that had pierced into her thigh was spreading to the rest of her body and she knew that she had to get home quickly.
She had made it barely. The mental picture of the bodies of the other children that she hadn't saved were still fresh in her mind. Two, just two. They were all she could save. That is what had kept her awake all through the night. Her body healed fast, that was part of being a slayer. She was going to check on the two kids again tonight if she could sneak past the receptionists into the children's ward.
After her bath she went outside to sit on her balcony for a little while. That was when she had found the painting that Kyle had left for her. She had stared at it for quite a few minutes before she called him to ask her to come over tonight. She hoped that he wouldn't mind going over to the hospital later tonight.
