Who: Gar and Rose
What: The Adventures of Beast Boy and Kid Jailbait
When: 1920's Chicago
Warnings: Maybe a couple.

In the Middle Agey Times, Gar had talked like a Shakespeare character (although he was well aware that Shakespeare was writing during the Elizabethan era, and thus technically occurred in the Modern Age). No one had seemed to care. In the Old West, he'd done his best John Wayne impression, and his John Wayne impression was really the stuff of legends. No one had taken much notice of that either.

At the moment, Gar was talking like a Dick Tracy reject.

To his complete lack of surprise, no one cared.

Gar walked into the shop, fedora worn high and proud. "I'm here looking for a gift, see? A nice one, see? Pretty girl, big birthday, make it happen, see?"

"Here, you're green, you are!" exclaimed the shopkeep, plainly East End accent clashing strongly with the newfound Chicagohood of the storefront.

"Yes. Well done," said Gar, dropping his bad voice acting. "I've been drinking a lot of absinthe at the local speakeasy. Can we focus here?"

"...sure, guv'."

"Good." After negotiating for his purchase, Gar and the man came to an agreement regarding payment: Gar told him the address of this magical green-making speakeasy, and he got Rose's gift that had been reserved for another customer. "Pleasure."

With that, Gar placed the gift in his hat, put the hat on his head, and turned into a cheetah, the hat disappearing wherever his clothes always went. "I'll see you later, guy! I got a girl to give a pretty thing."

The shopkeeper watched as the talking green cat left. "I have to get some of that absinthe."

"Hey, if you're going to date me, it's best that you know what you're getting into. This is the future. This is the grim reality of our new romance: constant, non-stop Gar." He stuck his tongue out.

"I dunno, I think I don't mind having it in my head." He stroked his chin, pretending to fantasize about sexual escapades. What he was actually thinking of, to his endless masculine shame, was how nice it would be to go to a movie or a play or dancing or dinner with Rose, doing ridiculously stupid things. Fortunately, he was still masculine enough not to want to go shopping. He clung to that feeling.

"So we're going to be dating?" There was a tiny smile on her face. The thought of going out with Gar as more than friends pleased her greatly. This was looking to be one of her best birthdays.

"You're extremely lucky I'm not psychic. I hope you know that." She guessed that she'd be much less inclined to injure him if she didn't see his thoughts. Which she figured were quite obscene.

"Dating? Probably. I've tried relationships where we stand on opposite ends of town and flash semaphore messages to each other, but it didn't really work out. She had an aversion to flags after a childhood football game wherein the entire flag team descended into anarchy and fought the football team to the death. Maybe. It was hard to read, with the flag shaking as she told me the story."

Gar shrugged, having had enough experience with a psychic girlfriend to know the pros and cons. "I think we both are. You'd be grossed out and wouldn't like me as much, and I have to tell you, I am a very good kisser. You'd be missing out."

Rose walked with Gar toward the bar. She made sure to steer clear of the annoying drunks, which was no easy task considering the place was lousy with them. "I'd say you're a good kisser. I'm not quite sure if you're very good yet."

"Oh no?" Quite without warning, he placed a hand behind her head and another behind her back and kissed her like a sailor coming home from World War II. Like most things Gar did, it was very theatrical and on the spur of the moment and probably ill-advised.

A few moments after his point had been made, he realized he should probably stop kissing her now. And then another few moments passed, and he stood up again, patiently awaiting a slap across the face. "Well, give me a few months, I'll figure out how best to smooch you."

It probably showed just how much she liked him that she hadn't speared him as soon as he'd pulled her close. She did let out a surprised little sound and almost protested for half a moment before getting caught up in the kiss. Maybe he was as good as he bragged. Rose certainly wouldn't give him the satisfaction of saying so out loud.

She slapped him, but mostly for show. "Next time you do that without warning or permission, you're going to be hurting for a few days, bub." There was some amusement in her eyes and her tone wasn't nearly as harsh as it could have been. Half the people around them who'd been watching applauded, some catcalled and those that sympathized with Gar booed.

He rubbed his cheek, but was smiling. Gar waved away the reactions of the people around him. "A few days? Is that a threat or a promise?" He waggled his eyebrows suggestively. He knew where the line was, and sometimes he crossed it, if only so that they could laugh when he ran back to the other side.

"So, first date. I'm seeing pizza, liquor, whores. French whores. Or, alternatively, I take you out for dinner and a movie, then I walk you home, and we linger around the door for a bit before you either go in without a good night kiss so you leave me wanting, or you kiss me and run inside so you still leave me wanting."

She smirked teasingly. "I hope you realize that I'm used to expensive dates, nights on the town, limos and roses. Expensive champagne." She wasn't really a fan of champagne, but he didn't need to know that. A first date at the movies was okay with Rose. She just wanted to play with Gar a little, maybe make him a little nervous.

"No you're not," said Gar with absolute confidence as he wondered whether or not you could get a fruit juice in a speakeasy without the bartender laughing at you. "I've been on dates with that kind of girl. I know that kind of girl. You're too classy to be that high class."

"Do you have any more plans today? Family dinner, that kind of thing? I mean, it is the big One Six. Even if you're missing your... dieciséisañera proper, your folks probably want to chow down with you. Plus, Sophie and Rachel have totally been shooting us looks all night long, I think they want to giggle about boys with you."

One day she'd make him nervous. It was possible. Rose had seen him blush today. She planned to do it again. Smiling, she glanced over at Sophie and Rachel. "They've been cheering me on with their powers for the past few minutes," she admitted.

"I do have to get back to my parents. They'll be sore with me if I get home too late."

"Assuming your home hasn't become a den of iniquity. I passed by the NYU Business School on the way here? It's a whorehouse now. Of course, the only reason I could tell the difference is because what prostitutes do, people like, and Sternies don't go in for that kind of thing."

Gar leaned back in his chair and waved at the girls. Emma had lodged a few scary images in his head, but they didn't bother, probably because Gar's head was a scary place to be. It was bad enough that he was lewd, but Gar was as inclined to ogle a woman's smell as he was her cleavage. Assuming "ogle" was appropriate. "Good luck explaining the boyfriend thing to your father. I'd walk you home, but I don't want to die."

"I'm sure my mother would have cleared out and prostitutes by now." There was a bad joke in there somewhere. Rose wasn't going to touch it. She smirked. "My father will deal with it. And he won't hurt you."

Rose broke the distance between herself and Gar, leaning in to kiss him on the cheek. "Thank you for the gift, Gar," she said softly.

"I'm glad you like it, Rose," said Gar, just as softly, his voice as sincere as it had ever been. "Happy birthday." Then, apparently having gotten it out of his system, his voice became irreverent again. "As soon as someone invents cell phones again, I'm probably going to call you and arrange our date. Champagne, roses, limo. I'll try to come up with some more symbols of excess for us."

Gar got the attention of the bartender and, with some effort, got him to make a fruit juice cocktail by explaining that he just poured in everything he would do for a mixed drink, then leaving out the drink. Then he stood on his stool. "Excuse me, ladies and drunkards, flappers and gangsters, souses of all ages. I, as an Australian gentleman, would like to raise a toast to Miss Rose Frost, who's currently celebrating her birthday! To Rose!"

"To Rose," echoed enough of the assembled lawbreakers to punch through the din of the establishment.

That shift from sincere to playful was interesting to Rose. She watched his face as it happened and would have made comment if not for the fact that he mentioned a future date. That distracted her in the best way possible. "I'll be expecting a call."

When she was toasted, a faint blush crept onto her face. She enjoyed the attention, though, and smiled at strangers who wished her well. In the distance, she noticed Sophie and Rachel watching her and trying very hard to call her over subtly. Rose mouthed at them to wait a second. Once Gar had hopped down from the stool, Rose met his eyes and smiled. "I'll see you later."

She turned and almost slinked away to her friends, hoping that Gar was watching her go but not willing to turn and check.
