Remus didn't hear him at first, concentrating instead on his own thoughts, his own worries. Sometimes, he wondered how Greyback had done it, ages ago. How had he maintained the presence of mind to come after him specifically? The notion that he had been a random victim had never occurred to anyone as a possibility; his father had insulted Greyback and he had attacked Remus in retaliation, obviously wanting him to be forced to live with the object of his scorn in his home. How had Greyback done it? If he could just figure that out, perhaps he could learn to control the wolf as well, appease his naturally violent tendencies. A pipe dream, to be sure, but one to which Remus clung with all his heart.
It was the inflection at the end of the question that caught Remus's attention, and he turned to his interlocutor. "Teddy, hi. Did you ask me something?"
