Who: Veronica Montgomery and Tavish Urquhart
When: October, 1996
Where: Hogsmeade
Rating: Low-ish
Warnings: Heavy flirting and kissing. Watch out!
Summary: Ronnie catches Tavish's eye. Flirting ensues. Also the start of an interesting relationship.
Status: Complete!
She wasn’t positive why she had come to Hogsmeade. Besides the fact that she was running low on chocolate and needed to stock up. That was really the only reason though. She’d rather be on the pitch, practicing for her next game. Rationally, she knew there was only so much practicing she could do, but she’d been fighting with Jessica a bit, and she always appreciated the outlet that quidditch provided.
Once she had gotten her chocolate, two galleons worth, she started wandering through the town, merely gazing in the windows. This was what she got for not going with her friends. Veronica opened one of her chocolate bars and chewed on it slowly as she made her way over to a bench. With nothing to do, she should go back to the castle, but it was too nice here, just people watching.
Speaking of people watching. Urquhart. She recognized him from classes, which wasn’t surprising, practically every female in school knew who he was. He was too handsome to not notice. She watched him thoughtfully, wondering if he was with anyone.
--
Tavish had broken away from his usual clout of friends hanging out in the Three Broomsticks to get a bit of air. He still had a butterbeer in hand but it was so pathetically weak he hardly even noticed. The night was crisp and he took a deep breath, running his hand through his hair. Seventh year was here, finally, and it was better than he could have hoped it would be be but it came with a lot of added stress that he’d rather not think about. Looking down the street he was caught with the sight of the people going about their own lives, unaware of his existence. When he looked the other way, however, he caught a glimpse that surprised him. Smirking he stood up straighter and walked toward the bench.
“Montgomery, right?” She was a beater, Hufflepuff, strong arm. He didn’t know a lot about her beyond that. Well, she had a twin. That was important information, that shit could get kinky.
--
Oh, Merlin.
When he started towards her, she immediately looked the other direction, subtly making sure she didn’t have any chocolate in her teeth. For whatever reason, he was coming to talk to her, and having chocolate in her teeth would not be a good thing.
Then he was there. Talking. She felt her cheeks warm a little bit, and she looked up at him, willing herself to act cool. “Yeah, Veronica. Urquhart, right?” Pretending she barely knew him was always a good thing to do; it made her look like less of a stalker. Oh, but if Jessica could see her now, she would kill her.
“Did you want to sit down or something?”
--
The smirk was wiped clean off of Tavish’s face. She had to check who he was? “Veronica, right,” he eyed her a moment before taking a sip of the butterbeer. She had to be lying. she’d been staring right at him and he was the captain of the bloody Quidditch team. This year more than any other people knew who Tavish Urquhart was. “I was more so wondering if there was something you wanted,” he said, his confidence finding him again. He didn’t need to point out that he’d caught her watching him.
Despite his words he took a seat, keeping one eye on her. “You’re taking Arthimancy this year, right?” he said in a nice, but off-handed tone.
---
Of course he had seen her. Her luck just wasn’t with her today. Rather than panic like she wanted to, she looked at him with one eyebrow raised, asking, “Is there something wrong with people watching? You happened to catch my eye.”
She had just said that, hadn’t she? Veronica started wrapping her chocolate up again, just to have something to focus on other than him. She should’ve gotten up when he started coming towards her. She was going to make a fool of herself, and she knew it. But then he was talking again, and she had no choice but to look at him again.
“Yeah, I am,” she replied, biting her lip for a second, trying to think of something to say besides ‘I sit right behind you. The back of your head is very pretty.’ “Did you, uh, have any trouble with that last assignment?”
Merlin, kill her.
--
Tavish’s brow when up and his cocky smirk was soon plastered right back on his face. “I did, did I?” he asked, his voice a little teasing. “And what about me caught your attention?” Sure, he was a little full of himself, but the way he saw it- he had a right to be. He’d worked hard for where he was and it wasn’t like someone could blame him for looking good, right?
When her teeth caught her lip his eyes flicked down. He’d always loved that habit on girls, he loved lips to begin with and when they drew attention... well he couldn’t help but look. Slowly, he shook his head, his eyes rising back to hers a moment later. “no, no. I mean, this is my second year. Why? Are you having trouble?” See? He could be a good guy!
--
Damn, that smirk. It had to be his most attractive trait. “Oh, just this and that. You were the most interesting thing around,” she said, seeing nothing wrong with boosting his ego a bit. She was sure his ego was already pretty large, but she couldn’t seem to make herself stop talking. Veronica was just thankful that she hadn’t embarrassed herself yet.
“Oh! Not really?” She was. Not with Arthimancy so much, but concentrating was a problem. Whether it was Quidditch, fighting with her sister, or staring at a certain someone’s head...Concentrating in that class was not easy. “Vector’s lectures are just a bore, so it’s hard to really...stay awake, honestly.” Half-truths. Veronica was queen at half-truths.
--
“Maybe not the only interesting thing,” he said smoothly, fixing her with a charming little smile that promised he meant her. He held her eyes for a moment before raising the bottle of butterbeer back to his lips, breaking the gaze. It was mostly for fun, messing with her. Tavish liked to see how he could effect girls, but he did have to admit she’d caught his eye. It wasn’t very often you saw a tiny little puff that had skills as a beater, after all.
With a small laugh he leaned back on the bench, looking out in front of them. “Why are you asking me? I don’t know how you’re doing in class.” Looking over he paused a moment before going on, dropping his glass to his lap. “Do you want to take a look at my notes?”
__
There was no way to act cool with the way he was looking at her. Her eyes widened a bit, and she felt her cheeks heat up again. After a moment, a smile spread across her face, and with a slightly teasing voice said, “Oh? And what other interesting things are there?” Veronica knew she was flirting, but she couldn’t help it. Something about Urquhart made those words come out of her mouth, and she didn’t mind in the slightest.
When he laughed, she leaned back as well with a smile on her face. Her smile shrunk a bit at his question. Did she want to look at his notes. Would that mean spending more time with him? Veronica bit her lip again, pretending to honestly think about it, before answering, “If you wouldn’t mind?”
--
“I tend to think that half-pint Hufflepuffs with anger problems are pretty interesting,” he said with a little tease, surprised that she was flirting at all. He honestly didn’t think that Hufflepuffs had it in them. Once again, Tavish was proven wrong in the best way possible.
He looked sideways at her and she had that lip between her teeth again. He couldn’t help it, his heart sped up just a hair. Clearing his throat he adjusted his jacket as if to look cooler and certainly not like he had a problem with her lips. When she accepted he grinned. “No, I wouldn’t mind or I wouldn’t have offered.” He turned toward her a little, resting his arm on the back of the bench. “What are you going to trade them for?” he asked as if theis were an everyday transaction.
--
Veronica raised her eyebrows at him. She didn’t know if she should be offended that he called her half-pint or that he said she had anger problems. Neither was necessarily wrong, and she couldn’t quite decide how to react to that. Still, he had said she was interesting, and right then, that was the only part she was focusing on. “And how many half-pint Puffs with anger issues do you run into, hmm?” Her smile grew as she tucked a piece of hair behind her ear. Merlin, she was flirting so much. Millicent would be ashamed of her.
When he turned towards her, her smile grew just a fraction of her inch. She needed to stop that. Her cheeks were starting to hurt. Veronica crossed her arms over her chest, adopting a smirk, and asked, “What would you want from me?”
--
The look she was giving him made him wonder if he’d over stepped a line. He wasn’t afraid of her by any means, he just laughed lightly. “Well you are a little short,” he pointed out as if that would fix his error. “It was a compliment. It’s impressive, given your size, that you have such ah- power- on the pitch.” He didn’t want to admit how much he’d watched her. It wasn’t her specifically but in general, he felt it was his duty to know the strengths and weaknesses of the other players at Hogwarts as captain, but she was hard to miss either way.
“I guess that depends on how flexible you are,” he said smoothly, his smirk firmly in place. “I could think of a few things...” he said offhandedly though his eyes flicked down to her lips quickly.
---
She grinned at him as he complimented her. Any thoughts of being offended flew out of her mind as he brought up Quidditch. “Just cause I’m tiny doesn’t mean I can’t be strong,” she said, winking at him. She didn’t even think twice about it, it just felt like a natural thing to do at the time. She wasn’t too surprised that he had noticed. If she was captain (a girl could dream), she would make sure to study her opponents as well. As it was, she just watched the other beaters, trying to figure out weaknesses.
Her smirk grew a bit, and this time she noticed as his eyes flicked downwards. “Care to share what you’re thinking?” She propped her elbow on the back of the bench and rested her chin on her hand, watching him with a curious expression on her face.
--
“I’ve noticed,” he told her, brows up and a sort of impressed smile on his lips. “You’re a little ferocious out there. I’m surprised you’re even in Hogsmeade, I’ve heard you’re a bit of a pitch hog.” By heard, he meant he’d kept an eye on the pitch and she seemed to be out there every opportunity she could. He admired that.
When she moved to face him and asked her question he smirked like the cat that hand gotten the cream. Leaning forward smoothly he murmured, “don’t mind if I do.” Knowing he was risking getting hit he leaned in, his hand softly moving to rest on her jaw as his lips pressed against hers in a confident but light kiss.
--
Veronica ducked her head, chuckling a bit. “Honestly, I wasn’t going to come. I was going to practice some more. The need for chocolate overruled my love of Quidditch on this one,” she said sheepishly. There were few things that came before Quiddtich, but chocolate was most definitely one of them.
She wasn’t expecting him to kiss her. Not in the slightest, but she couldn’t make herself pull back or even care that they were in public. He was kissing her. It took a moment for Veronica to respond, but she lightly pressed her lips against his, a slight smile on her lips. She pulled back slightly, ducking her head slightly. She shouldn’t be doing this. But...before she could change her mind, she pressed her lips against his lightly again.
--
Tavish chuckled when she admitted that she hadn’t intended to come today. “well way to break your mould,” he complimented her. Typically when chics started talking about needing chocolate he backed away slowly. He’d dealt with enough of them to know it was bad news. There wasn’t an easy way to get out of this though and he wasn’t really ready to be done with her either.
In truth, he believed he’d have gotten smacked or punched for that move. When he felt her kissing back, smiling into his lips he felt himself sort of soar, smiling himself. He was about to make a teasing cocky remark when she took him by surprise and kissed him again. His hand slide from her jaw to her hair, surprised at how silky it was, though most of his attention was on her lips. As he pulled away he was smirking but far from cocky he was trying to figure out just what to make of her. “You’re just full of surprised,” he told her. “I’d say that’s worth at least two pages of notes.” He was teasing but there was no reason to think he’d not enjoyed himself.
--
“Oh, I wouldn’t say that. I fully intend on going back later on and practicing,” she said honestly. The need to fly with a bat in her hand was too great to resist, and she knew any other Quidditch player would understand that completely. Her love of chocolate wasn’t that great. It was her bedtime snack, and nothing more. So she told herself.
When his hand went to her hair, she sighed happily. She loved when people played with her hair, and he was really just making it so much harder to stop kissing him. When he pulled back, she was surprised to find her hand on his thigh, not remembering putting it there. “Notes, hmm? I hope they’re all good surprises.” Judging by the look on his face, he was having just as much as she was. Despite the nervousness, she was having fun.
--
Tavish chucked and nodded. “Fair enough. I’d join you but it would probably cause interhouse ruckess,” he told her with a little friendly smile. He could imagine the scandal if a Slytherin and Hufflepuff were practicing together. Not to mention that primarily she would just be hitting a bludger at him while he did a series of dives. Seekers and Beaters didn’t have a lot of drills to go through.
“Notes,” he responded, leaning in to give her another quick, small, kiss, his hand falling on top of hers as if to keep it on his leg. “The best kind.” After a moment he sat up straighter sort of chuckling to himself. “I really thought you were going to hit me,” he confessed. “I prefer the kissing to hitting, for the record.”
--
“Oh, yeah, my team would not be happy,” she said, smiling back at him. Despite what the rest of the school thought, Hufflepuffs could be mean. The most prominent trait in her house was loyalty; there was nothing in there that said they couldn’t be mean or ruthless or that they had to be nice all the time. Still, it was nice that he had even mentioned them practicing together. She could just imagine all the kinds of fun they could get into on the pitch.
Veronica kissed him back, the smile that was on her face constantly lately not fading one bit. “I...never really considered it. If it had been anyone else, I probably would’ve,” she replied, trailing off a bit. It didn’t occur to her what exactly she had just said, her mind was concentrating on his next words. “I wouldn’t hit you. Wouldn’t want to damage your face,” she said, teasing again. Merlin knew, if she wanted to hurt someone, she very much could.
--
Tavish’s brows when up a surprised laugh coming out as she admitted that if anyone else had pulled that they’d have gotten hit. But not him. “Oh, yeah?” His ego puffed and he couldn’t wipe the smile off of his face if he wanted to. “Didn’t realize you cared, Montgomery,” he teased. When she said she didn’t want to damage his face he laughed and relaxed a little. “I appreciate it, it’s a really nice face after all,” he was now teasing himself, knowing he had a reputation for being a bit of a peacock but he never minded it.
--
She grinned at him. “Of course I care. Such a pretty face shouldn’t be hurt,” she teased, her hand drifting up to cup his cheek. The more time she spent with him, the more bold she became. But still, that was rather forward and she blushed, letting her hand drop back down to his thigh. Because that wasn’t forward at all.
She knew his reputation well. She couldn’t help it. When someone as handsome as Urquhart is being talked about, she couldn’t help but pay attention and file it for later. Kissing him like that may not have been a bright decision, but...she would concern herself with that later.
--
Tavish chuckled, “I’m not sure if I should be complimented or insulted,” he told her jovially. His hand reached out to snatch hers, moving to kiss the palm. “Be good. Over inflating my ego could be dangerous,” he teased. She seemed practically fearless. He could tell she had her reservations, of course, her cheeks betrayed her, but he couldn’t help but admire the way that she worked in counterpoint to any... shyness.
“So how many notes have you gotten now?” he asked, as if he were supposed to keep tally, leaning in to take her lips again. Tavish was having fun, most of what he did was governed by a need to enjoy his youth while he still had it. He had little regret for girls that took him too seriously. After all, he didn’t make any notion to hide who he was and he wasn’t one who made false promises. Girls heard what they wanted to. They filled in the blanks. That wasn’t his fault.
--
“I would say complimented, definitely,” she whispered. Veronica was a bit distracted by the palm kissing. She cleared her throat, smirking at him again. “What if I enjoy inflating your ego?” She did seem to have a knack for it, after all. Maybe she should add it to her list of talents.
With a raise of her eyebrows, she answered, “Oh, quite a few.” She would’ve added another teasing comment, but her lips suddenly became busy, and she closed her eyes happily, kissing him back. She wasn’t an idiot. She didn’t expect anything from him. Veronica wasn’t sure that was a good thing, that she was knew his reputation of going from girl to girl, and was still kissing him.
The thought that he was using her made her nervous, but all they were doing was kissing. That was anything horrible. It would be different if it was....But it was just kissing. This time, Veronica’s hand went to his hair, deepening their kiss just the tiniest bit. She enjoyed pushing boudaries, and she didn’t really think he would mind.
--
“I prefer that to insulted, generally,” he said jokingly. “Well if you’re willing to suffer the consequences...” He gave her another rogueish grin and nodded, agreeing she’d earned a few pages at least.
Tavish may have just been having fun but he couldn’t get over how much she shocked him. As her hand moved into his hair and she deepend the kiss, taking that control- the little Hufflepuff- he felt a jolt run through him. Despite his reputation, Tavish wasn’t much for snogging too publicly but it was hard not to push any farther and see where he could get. The sheer idea made him excited. Running his tongue over her lower lip he smirked as he pulled away, though not far.
--
“I think you’ll find that most people do. Unless there’s something seriously wrong with them,” she said, as though trying to think of someone like that. None came to mind, obviously, and she let herself be distracted by his grin. He was going to be her downfall, she was almost sure of it. It was hard for her to mind terribly though.
If she was being honest with herself, she had completely forgotten they were in public and everyone in Hogsmeade could see them. When he pulled back, she licked her lips slowly, letting her hand slide down the side of his face, then rest on his chest. She kept her eyes on his, until a movement caught her eye and she remembered where they were.
“Uh, random question,” she asked, blushing a bit again, “do you want to go somewhere less public?” Her voice showed that she didn’t want to stop kissing him, but Merlin, her friends could see them. Or would see them, if they stayed here for much longer.
--
Tavish gave a small laugh, “yeah I suppose so. So what you’re saying is I’m not unique?” He was trying to keep things light, teasing. That was where Tavish was the most comfortable, when things were lighthearted and fun. This little Puff was certainly fitting into his fun requirement- and to think he’d only stepped out a moment to get some air...
At her question his brows flew to his airline. Was the Puff really asking him to go somewhere more private? She was blushing so he figured this wasn’t normal for her and that only made it more hot. “Gladly,” he responded, taking her hand. He really didn’t want to leave the village but he wasn’t sure how much less public she wanted to be.
--
Veronica smiled at him, “Oh, you’re unique. Just not in that respect.” When he took her hand, she stood up with him, biting her lip gently. She should really start thinking about what she was doing. Really, being this impulsive couldn’t be good for her. She should’ve been sorted into Gryffindor, with the way she was acting. Kissing him in public, going somewhere private with him...
She let herself be led, trying very hard to not think. Thinking led to her backing out of...whatever was going to happen, and she really didn’t want to back out. He wouldn’t hurt her. No possible way. And if he tried, well, she could defend herself easily.
She hoped.
“Have an idea of where we’re going?” Her voice came out strong and sure, which contrasted greatly with how she looked. As they walked, Veronica was just looking down at their hands, they were interlocked, which resulted in her face being blocked by a curtain of hair. She wanted to be wherever he was taking her, so that she could get back to kissing him and not think about how this could be a very bad idea.
--
“Not a one,” he promised with a smirk, still holding her hand as they walked through the village, looking for somewhere shadowed and private enough to continue. This may have all started by random but he’d be damned if he wasn’t going to enjoy himself. She was a little box of surprises and he was starting to wonder who had made the rule that Slytherins and Hufflepuffs didn’t mix. He was beginning to think that they were the best combination out there...
