Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Orla Quirke and Dempster Wiggleswade
When: Today starting at ten and ending whenever they get tired of each other
Where: London
Rating: PG
Summary: The two finally meet and enjoy the day together.
Status: Closed/InComplete

For someone like Orla Quirke, meeting a complete stranger whom she had only spoken to sporadically and through their journals wasn't a normal occurrence. She was someone who typically stayed within her small niche of friends and rarely ventured out, and that usually took considerable force. Sure, she was comfortable with talking to everyone on paper; they couldn't see her face and she couldn't see theirs to judge their reactions. Speaking to someone in person was completely different and she always had a horrible habit of reverting into her shell. The quietness came from being an only child - an only child who grew up with only her father since her mother died when she was younger. Mr. Quirke was quiet and it was only natural that Orla would be, too. However, once she finally got to know someone, there was hope that she would open up, and she really hoped that would happen today.

Dressing hadn't taken long; she wasn't the type to fuss about her appearance and wore a simple pair of trousers and a top, as well as a pair of trainers. Though, there was one last touch she had to add: her camera, which she placed carefully around her neck. She apparated close to where the London Eye was and walked the rest of the way to it. She couldn't see it at first because of several buildings, but turning a corner -- there it was. It was one of her favourite things to photograph despite the fact she had never been on it.

Walking closer, it dawned on her that she really had no idea what Dempster looked like. Luckily, he had suggested that they wait for one another next to the queue for the Eye, so she crossed the lawn and leaned against the fence. Her eyes danced across the crowd, looking for anyone who might meet the mental image she had created.

Turning at her name, Orla was finally face-to-face with Dempster. He wasn't exactly like she had pictured him; the hair colour was darker and she didn't imagine him with any facial hair, but those were minor things that didn't matter whatsoever.

"Nice to finally meet you," she said, giving a small smile of her own and resisting the urge to go completely shy on him as she, too, extended her hand and shook his. "You're taller than I thought you'd be," she found herself saying before even realising it and blushed slightly. She always did make interesting first impressions.

She was exactly as he'd imagined her. Quiet and reserved with classic features to match her personality. "The pleasure is all mine."

Dempster let his eyes travel over her briefly before he looked down at himself. "Taller? Hopefully more clever too." Orla's blush made him raise his brow and continue to stare. He didn't know any witches that still blushed. "So then," he looked up and over his shoulder at the Eye. "Are we going to try this?"

Meeting a complete stranger wasn't unfamiliar territory for Orla; she did it often at her previous job and had grown more accustomed to it, but meeting someone she didn't know outside her comfort zones was entirely new. She was fully aware that he was studying her just as much as she was studying him, and secretly hoped she passed the appraisal.

"You seemed clever enough when writing, but we'll have to see if that carries over in person," she said and then followed his gaze up at the London Eye with quite a bit of apprehension. He had to be in Gryffindor if he could get on that thing without any reservations whatsoever. "I suppose so," she said hesitantly and wrung her hands together in front of her so he couldn't tell just how nervous she actually was. Looking back at him, she took a deep breath before moving into the queue.

He chuckled, amused by her remark. "I hope so or I've been deluding myself all these years." What Dem had not expected was for her to be so young. She couldn't have been much out of Hogwarts.

"We don't have to but I think you'll be impressed with the view." His hand went to the space near the small of her back, not touching her, but their to guide her. "You can still say no until we get on and I'll consider you brave for even thinking of it."

"Oh, I've heard it's spectacular," she said, looking up at the wheel as the queue moved forward. Glancing back at him, she gave a small laugh when he said he would still consider her brave for just standing in line and even contemplating going on it. So long as the thing didn't sway and she didn't look down, she believed she would be fine. She hoped so anyway.

"Were you in Gryffindor?" she asked, curious. "Because surely only they could act as calm as you're acting about getting on this. Unless, of course, you played Quidditch or aren't afraid of heights." She might have been rambling, but she was also attempting to get to know him; to learn things about him so she could make out his character.

"No, I was sorted Ravenclaw and can attest with my vast knowledge that you'll be fine, even when we're at the very top." They moved a step forward, his attention solely on Orla. "I don't play Quidditch. I never found myself interested in it. I can fly fine, but I prefer football The muggle sport?"

Dempster smiled down at her. "What about you? Always lived in Dover?"

"Oh. I was in Ravenclaw too, but I don't really like to fly very often," she said when she got it wrong because she could have sworn that he attributed some of the characteristics of Gryffindor house. But she could see the bit of Ravenclaw there too and nodded as she listened to him. "I know about football; My dad always emphasised the need to know about the muggle and wizarding world, and always made sure I was exposed to both," she explained. "It's an interesting sport - almost like Quidditch, except you kick the ball around with your foot instead of flying."

Orla smiled and nodded when he asked if she had always lived in Dover. "For as long as I can remember. Dad and my mum once lived just outside of London before I was born, but when she found out she was going to have me, she insisted that they move away from the city. So they chose the shore." Stepping forward, she turned and leaned against the railing. "You should come back there though and I'll properly show you around. If you want me to, that is. There's more to it than just the lighthouse!"

"My parents split when I was young and she married a muggle. I'd probably still be on that side if she'd not encouraged me back to magic." Dempster curled his fingers around the railing, leaning against it.

"I've lived in the City all my life. On both sides of the river." He smiled, wondering what it was that drew him to her. Just as he'd been curious about Orla in the journals, it was more so in person. "I'd like that, if that's an invitation. Show me how you see Dover." In the back of his mind, he wondered if this was the start of something.

A sympathetic look crossed her face when he said his parents split up. "I'm sorry," she said. "That must have been really hard." But he at least was able to go back to the wizarding world; that was a positive!

"It must be exciting to live here," she said and looked past the Eye across the river. "Never a dull moment and there's always something to do." She smiled slightly and then moved forward as several people in front of them got into one of the pods. They would be next and to distract herself from that thought, she turned back to him with a nervous smile. "Of course it's an invitation. There isn't too much to see, not like London anyway, but the castle is always lovely and if it's a clear enough day, you can see France across the channel."

"Don't be. It was the right thing. My parents had spent their time together and weren't the same people anymore." Dem truly believed that and accepted it much easier than he had in his younger days.

"Never a dull moment, but also not much rest either. I think that's why I was satisfied with the lighthouse when I found it." He grinned down at her, touching her lightly so she could turn and not exactly look at the Eye. "Tell me when and I'll be there. Tomorrow won't work if you're finishing your book then." Dem looked down and gave Orla a wink. "Some time next week would work."

She nodded when he assured her that his parents splitting was the right thing. He didn't seem all that affected by it, not anyways, so she let it go.

"That I can believe. Are there as many cars and people on the streets at night as there are during the day?" Orla lived in relative seclusion in Dover; her father preferred the peace and quiet and wanted to live far enough away when they moved there in case they had more children who wanted to fly around without worrying about muggles seeing them.

The attendant called them forward and Orla made sure she looked up at Dempster as he spoke, though looked down when she had to step onto the pod which was... still moving as they got on. The doors closed behind them and she knew they would be in there for at least half an hour. Taking a deep breath, she focused on what he said and blushed slightly, moving to the bench in the middle and sitting down because her legs had started shaking. "Unfortunately so," she said and bit into her bottom lip. "I abandoned it today to meet you, it might not forgive me again if I did it tomorrow, but definitely next week. I'd like that."

Dempster nodded his answer. "It makes it hard to believe anyone ever sleeps much. I've not spent much time in the country."

Following her into the car, he stood for a moment, seeing her trepidation he placed his hand gently on Orla's shoulder. "I can hardly ask you to give your book up two days in a row." Dem grinned and finally took a seat next to her. He wanted to look out at the view but they were barely off the ground. There would be time for that.

"Sometimes I think it would be fun to live in the city," Orla mused, risking a glance over his shoulder and out one of the windows. They weren't high yet, but they were certainly climbing. "But then I think about it and I'm not so sure. It's nice to visit... like this, but living here?" she shrugged her shoulders.

She appreciated the touch on her shoulder and gave him a grateful smile which turned into a laugh. "The ending might change into something I won't like if I neglect it for two days!" she practically gushed, her nerves over meeting him and being on the wheel making her overly excited. "Did you want to --" she gestured towards one of the windows.

"Getting used to the pace I think would be the hardest for someone not used to it."

Dempster laughed, enjoying Orla's creativity. "I have a friend that writes those. Mystery novels with a charm to change the ending so you can reread it again and again. It's addicting." Following her look to the window, he nodded, holding out his hand for her for a moment before awkwardly dropping it and taking a half step away. Looking back to her he grinned. "It really is a great view."

She supposed he had a point there, even though she believed it would still be exciting for awhile. Sure, the novelty would wear off eventually, but that happened regardless of where someone lived.

When he laughed, she smiled and gave a small laugh herself as some of the awkwardness of this initial meeting was starting to quickly ebb away. Even though they had just met, she felt comfortable with him - she had to, otherwise she wouldn't have even thought about getting on the Eye. "Unfortunately, this one is a muggle novel, so the ending can't be changed. Hopefully I like it." She held up her fingers and crossed them playfully.

Some of the awkwardness crept back in when he held his hand out to her and she stupidly looked at it for several seconds before he withdrew it. Ducking her head to look at the camera around her neck and fiddle with one of the settings, she nodded. "It is," she said and looked up again once she was satisfied. She looked at him briefly before standing up and slowly, hesitantly, anxiously made her way to one of the windows in the pod. Her hands gripped the railing in front of her and she felt slightly dizzy when she looked down. "We're getting higher and we've still got a ways to go," she observed and finally looked out at the horizon; she immediately understood why so many people came on this thing each day.

"If you've made it this far into the book, I'm guessing you will. Even without the ever-changing ending." Dempster's smile was easy and broad at her crossed fingers.

He knew he'd pushed her too far when he held out his hand, but it had been an instinctual gesture and now, one that he regretted. Wiggleswade had turned his attention to the scene through the window, only catching a glimpse of Orla in the reflection as she moved closer. "It's beautiful, isn't it?" From this height, the view of London was incredible but he didn't suggest she look anywhere than where she was right now. Something told Dem what an achievement this was for Orla.

Even as they climbed higher and higher, Orla gradually became accustomed to this adventure. Her legs still felt like jello and if she held her hands out straight they would shake, but she was insistent on making this experience worthwhile.

Nodding at Dempster's comment, her eyes scanned the horizon. Immediately, she was able to spot Big Ben and the Parliament building. "You can see for kilometers and kilometers," she said, glancing up with him with a smile before reaching down for her camera and snapping several pictures. "Oh, I think that's Buckingham Palace too," she said, zooming in carefully and snapping a shop so she could examine it later.

"I'm really glad we decided to meet up and do this. There's no way I would have been able to ever do it on my own."

Leaning back against the railing, he gave up the view to watch Orla's reaction. "I am too. I kind of thought you were putting me off after I asked for the tour in Dover." Dempster shrugged. "As with most adventures, two are better than one."

He glanced over his shoulder, gesturing to the other side of the pod. "Do you want to see the view in another direction?" There were less than a handful of people with them and plenty of open and private space to move around.

Letting her camera rest against her chest again, Orla looked at him. Had she really made the impression that she was 'putting him off' whenever they first spoke? She hadn't intended to. "I'm sorry," she apologised and truly meaning it. "We had only begun talking and honestly... it felt a little strange at the time to meet someone I didn't know alone." She hoped that her explanation didn't come off as rude.

Following his gaze, Orla looked to the other side and nodded. "Sure," she said and moved to the other side. There weren't any major landmarks, but there were still office buildings, one of which was just as tall as the Eye itself, and loads to see still. "This is amazing."

He smiled easily. "I can understand that. My little sister is the same way. Shy I suppose." It was a foreign concept to Dempster, but he could appreciate that others were challenged with it. "But you're doing alright now? Assuming I'm not some hexer, intent on making you my next prey?" Winking, he hoped she didn't take his attempt at humour too seriously.

"You could get spoiled by it. Having everything you'd want right at your fingertips. It does get to be too much at times."

He had a sister. She added that bit of information to the few things she knew about him. Laughing, she shook her head. "If you were a hexer, you would have already tried to take advantage of me when we first met. Unless, of course, you're trying to lead me into a false sense of security," she teased lightly, leaning against the railing and actually looking down for the first time. It made her slightly dizzy, but it wasn't nearly as bad as she thought.

"Oh, I think I'm already spoiled by it."

Dempster chuckled. "I'm not that devious." His wiggling eyebrows were hardly menacing. "I'm a decent chap. Probably too nice in some respects and not enough in others."

As they crested the peak and started their descent, he kept his eyes glancing toward her. Orla drew him in with her natural, honest demeanor that he almost regretted seeing the ride end, but their day wasn't over.

With his hand at the small of her back, they queued up to exit the pod. "Are you hungry?"

Orla hated seeing the ride end as well, especially since she was perfectly comfortable with it now. But there would be other times, and now that she knew she could get on it without having a heart attack, she could do it by herself whenever she wanted.

Nodding at his question, she waited as a few people ahead of them got off and followed them back onto the platform. "I'm starving," she said, glancing back at him. "And you did promise there would be a picnic, so where are we going for it?"

"I did promise that," he answered with a grin. "I mentioned the gardens, if that is alright with you. Do you mind if we apparate there together?"

Looking ahead of them, Dempster searched for a quiet nook to hide their magic. He grinned down at her and patted his pocket. "I have the basket shrunk."

"Of course it's not all right with me," she teased and then laughed. "I don't mind apparating together since I have no idea where I would even be going! Knowing me, I would end up on the other side of London."

Nodding when he said he had the basket in his pocket, Orla gestured ahead to an alley between two buildings as a possible place to apparate from. "Or we could take the muggle way. The tube is a lot of fun, only calling it the tube is really funny."

"Do you want to?" Thinking about where they were and were they were going, Dem dug into his pocket, pulling out the handful of silver coin. "Hold out your hands." He added 'please' as an afterthought and started separating them muggle money from magical.

"Looks like we have enough. The tube it is." They moved toward the closest station, and Dempster was never more than a foot from her. "Could you do it? Leave your magic and live like a muggle?"

Orla nodded when he asked if she wanted to take the tube. Though apparating would have obviously been faster and more efficient, there was something about the underground that fascinated her. Though she did hold her hands out and watched as he started counting muggle money out for the both of them, she made a mental note to pay him back for it later. "So I owe you a few pounds next time or I pay," she said offhandedly as they headed for the closest station which wasn't too far - just a few blocks away, really.

"Yeah, I think I could," she said, falling into step next to him and glancing up periodically. "I like being a witch and being able to use my wand for easy things like apparation or the occasional accio if I'm too lazy to get up, but I'm not so reliant on my wand as many others." She shrugged her shoulders. "It's just a matter of getting used to everything else muggle. Could you do it?" she asked as an after thought as they headed into the underground and got tickets.

Lowering his voice so it didn't echo against the tiles of the underground station, he nodded. "I have. When my mum married a muggle, it just seemed to be the way of things. It was really hard to find an interest in Hogwarts for me when I had good muggle mates back home."

Dem shrugged, checking the screen to see that this was their train. "I could go back to it, even though most of my life is magic-oriented now." The force of air through the tunnel at the approaching train made him smile.
