Who: Orla Quirke and Rose Zeller-Corner
When: Monday evening
Where: Fortesce's in Diagon
What: friendly chat and ice cream
Rating: E for Everyone
Status: Closed / Incomplete

Still off schedule from her honeymoon, Rose looked through the passing faces in Diagon Alley, waiting for Orla. She'd picked a table out front for Fortescue's Ice Cream parlor and hoped her mate wouldn't mind being next to the walkway, hoping, instead, for something more secluded in the back. The Alley was busy with summer traffic, witches and wizards scurrying back and forth with parcels and bags.

She saw a few people that she knew, nodding politely but never encouraged anyone closer or to sit down. When Orla's familiar face came into view, Rose stood and waved, calling out her location.

Despite what had happened to her yesterday (the whole quitting thing), Orla wasn't as depressed or as upset as she had made herself seem in her journal. Sure, she hated the idea of being unemployed and no longer making money, but she hadn't been happy with what she was doing. She only stayed there because she had to and because she felt her dad expected it of her.

Walking through Diagon Alley, Orla skirted around busy shoppers left and right until she reached the ice cream parlour. Spotting Rose, she smiled and waved back, side-stepping a few kids and coming up to the table Rose had reserved for them.

"Hello there," she said, laying her bag which held her camera and wand only in a chair. "How goes the married life?" she teased lightly.

Rose smiled and ducked her head away, willing her blush to fade a bit before she sat back down. "It's better than I imagined. Michael is..." Her words trail off, not wanting to gush on and on about her husband.

Flipping the little menu card over to see the selection, she found the sundae she wanted and looked up to meet Orla's eyes again. "What happened with your job? Are you at least relieved?"

Orla noticed the blush on Rose's cheeks and couldn't help but laugh as she sat down too. If all marriages brought on looks like that, perhaps they wouldn't be so bad, then. However, everyone knew that what Rose had was only a one in a million type thing; their journals were filled with people who were unhappy with their pairs. "We'll save the details about how wonderful and perfect your new husband is later, then," she teased, reaching for a menu even though she already knew what she wanted.

Scanning over the contents, she made a mental note to try some of the newer items on the menu the next time she came around. "Oh, I finally told my boss that I was tired of working six days a week and for ridiculous hours. I was there most days from nine in the morning until seven with only a lunch break! I didn't make enough for that and it was just something I wasn't enjoying anymore. I've never really liked taking still photographs of people, much less families who are oftentimes ungrateful or who rowdy kids that give me a headache on a daily basis." She was ranting and felt bad since they had only just met up. "I'm sorry, I don't mean to rant."

"Yes, please. Don't get me started or I'll never shut up." Rose grinned and leaned back into her chair.

"No," Rose shushed her. "Don't hold back on my account. He sounds like a right bastard. I think you did the right thing. Why work those hours and those wages and get nothing for it in return?" When the waiter neared, Rose gave her order, letting Orla do the same before she offered more of her opinion. "So what now? I bet there are a lot of brides looking for a good photographer for their wedding. You should think about putting an advert in the Daily Prophet."

Orla planned to get her started, but much later! She wanted to hear all about the honeymoon, or at least the parts that wouldn't have the girls blushing and matching the cherries that were likely to be in their ice creams.

Scrunching her nose up, Orla put the menu back on the table. "He really wasn't fair," she said with a firm nod, though it wasn't usually like her to say anything negative against anymore. Giving the waiter her order too, Orla waited until the woman was gone before shrugging her shoulders. "That requires working with people again," she said with a bit of a laugh. "Why can't there be jobs where people get paid to take pictures of flowers or pretty landscapes?" It was a rhetorical question, but that was where her interests were. "Lisa Turpin suggested putting in a resume at the Daily Prophet and hinted at being a reference. I could do that or -- photograph weddings like you suggested. Or maybe both. I don't really know."

"Oh, that would be a good job for you. You should try that. At least put in an application. Do you know anyone else that works there? Someone that can recommend you so that you have two?"

Leaning forward again, she rested her head in her hand and listened to Orla, thinking at least the other witch didn't have to worry about a job and plan a wedding for herself at the same time.

"Really?" she asked thoughtfully, tilting her head to the side and regarding Rose carefully. She trusted the other woman's opinion and it was nice to have someone else give her advice besides her father.

Biting her lip in concentration, she tapped her finger against the table. "Well, there is another person. Only I haven't really met him in person?" Here she gave an awkward sort of laugh. "Dempster Wiggleswade? He works for the Ministry, but he answers the legal advice column for the Prophet. I've briefly talked to him over the journals. I suppose I could ask him if I decided to do this."

"Sure, why not? There wouldn't be less stress, probably, running to catch the news, but at least it would be different stress. It would be exciting."

Rose knit her brows together, not recognising the name. "At least you've made contact with him. Do you think he'd recommend you?" Trying hard not to smile as her curiosity grew with Orla's laugh, she had to ask, "How did you meet him?

Nodding, Orla added it to her list of things to think about later. Working for the Daily Prophet did come with its perks; who could honestly say they did such a thing? As did possibly taking photographs of weddings. Though the latter would likely be easier in comparison to working for a newspaper, they both weighed equally on the pros and cons lists. "I'll really have to sit down and think about it," she said and then couldn't help smiling when Rose asked how she and this Dempster person met.

"I pasted a few pictures in my journal and he saw them and commented on them," she said, leaning back in her chair. Before she continued, however, their ice cream arrived and Orla thanked the waitress before going back to her story. "Somehow the conversation wound up with me convincing him that Dover is a really nice place to visit and that he should consider going there on holiday. The funny thing is that he actually did! I thought he was only teasing at first, but he really did." She laughed and shook her head before taking a savory bite of her ice cream. "Oh this is really good."

What Rose didn't tell Orla, was that she'd check with the art department at Fleetwood's as well in case they had any work they could give her in the mean time.

"Really?" Rose asked the question around her spoon, not waiting to dig into the hot, fudgy syrup. "So you didn't meet him when he came to Dover?" Plucking at the cherry on top of her ice cream, she dunked it in the sauced before popping it between her teeth, the stem finally giving up the tug of war. "Why not?"

Why not? Orla took several bites of her chocolate ice cream with raspberry syrup and cherries to figure out a way to answer that question. It wasn't that she didn't not want to meet him; he was a nice enough person and they got along well enough, she just found it awkward to meet someone whom she had only spoken to through a bit of parchment and a quill.

So, she shrugged her shoulders. "I don't really know him, I guess. At the time, we had only had one conversation - about my pictures and his thoughts about taking a holiday. He didn't even know my name then. It just seemed awkward to meet him alone then." Then she hesitated before continuing on. "He said that we should meet here in London whenever I had a day off from work. -- Should I write him?"

Orla was right. The ice cream was delicious and Rose enjoyed each spoonful as she listened to her friend talk about the bloke. "Alright, I get that you wouldn't have wanted to meet him alone, but still, don't give up a chance. It's not like it is a date, yeah?"

Rose swirled the ice cream into the chocolate, moving the nuts around until it was all on her spoon. "But he knows your name now? And he's invited you to London? For what? What are you going to do?" Taking a deep breath, she knit her brows together and grinned. "You have all the time in the world to be off now. Write him!"

Her eyes widened just slightly at the question of whether or not it was a date. "Of course it's not a date!" she exclaimed, almost a bit too loudly and blushed. "Of course it's not. You can't date anyone you don't really know."

"He does know my name now," she said with a nod and smiled faintly as she remembered how he originally called her Persephone. "Chelsea Physic Garden? Have you ever heard of it?" She had asked her dad about it and he only said it was a nice enough place without any elaboration, so she was curious.

She smirked at Orla's reaction. "It could be a date," she teased, using her spoon to gesture with.

"It's beautiful. You'll like it. Don't forget to take your camera. I'm guessing you'll want to photograph all of it." Rose smiled warmly at her friend, glad she was doing something new even when her world seemed to be turning upside down. "And you can mention the Prophet and see what he thinks. If he liked your photographs when he saw them, that's a good sign."

"It is not a date," she insisted and then poked her tongue out at Rose before eating a rather big bite so she wouldn't have to talk again for a minute or two. The whole dating thing wasn't something she often talked about, especially in regards to herself. That's why she was so grateful she hadn't officially been stuck with anyone yet! Of course, she had a near scare with Merlin, but that had been changed almost the moment it had been planned.

Having the confirmation that the Chelsea Physic Garden was really nice and that she would supposedly like it made her smile. "Oh, you know me, my camera goes everywhere I go," she said with a laugh. "I use it more than I use my wand, actually. But I will mention it to him. Somehow, anyway, and without it sounding like I'm imposing or only meeting him for a favour as opposed to spending the day with him."

"Right, got it. Not a date," she teased, slightly sticking her tongue out as well and laughing that could act like children over ice cream.

"I think you might be right about that, your camera over your wand." Rose grinned, glad she'd encouraged Orla to come out. They were having a grand time. "No, of course. You'd be as sincere as you could." Blinking for a moment, she grinned. "The whole day? What are you going to do with him the whole day?"

Teasing and ice cream went hand-in-hand after all, so poking their tongues out only came natural. Laughing, Orla shook her head and pulled one of the cherries off her ice cream after having resisted it all this time and ate it. "There would have to be mutual feelings and things in common before it could even be considered a date anyway," she pointed out. "And as you know, I've never been on one anyway."

"Well, I get more uses out of my camera than my wand on a typical day," she provided, gesturing towards the bag that held her camera.

"I would try to be anyway." She looked thoughtful, her eyebrows furrowing together in concentration. "Perhaps I can find a way to bring it up nonchalantly - make it seem natural instead." That could definitely work. Blushing after Rose asked what they would do for the whole day, Orla ducked her head. "I didn't mean the whole day as in -- Who knows how long those gardens can take to walk around!"

"Do you know his feelings on the matter? He's just expressed appreciation for your photographs and suggestions for holiday?" Rose wasn't trying to get anything out of Orla, just guess the depth of this Wiggleswades' interest.

"Just don't dwell on it. Don't let yourself worry about it when you should be having a good time. You'll get an opportunity to bring it up, especially if you're with him the whole day."

Holding up her hands to ward Orla off, Rose laughed. "Teasing! I'm just teasing."

Shaking her head, Orla confirmed that she didn't know much about Dempster aside from the two times they had spoken through their journals. "He teases me a bit," she said, trying to give Rose a bit to go off of since she really seemed to want all the details. "But not the malicious kind of teasing; he makes me laugh." Which was part of the reason as to why she did want to meet him in person. She had always been drawn to those who amused her or appreciated her regardless of the fact that she could sometimes be overly quiet.

Cheeks still red, Orla rolled her eyes and threatened to shoot a spoon full of ice cream at Rose. "You'd better be!" she exclaimed, though was laughing so much that she wouldn't have been able to get off a proper shot if she tried. "Just you wait - I'll get you back somehow!"

"That's sweet. When you said Ministry I really couldn't imagine you with a stuffy type that never laughed. So nothing else about him? Is he handsome? No, you wouldn't now that yet either." Rose was so excited for Orla. "A blind not-date. You'll have a good time."

Leaning back in her chair, she laughed and dodged right and left in case Orla did get her shot off. "You're supposed to be eating it to get over your misery, not aiming it at me!"

"I'm never going to live this down, am I?" she asked, giving Rose a little desperate look even though she was amused at the situation herself. Nervous, yes, but still thankfully amused. And rose's teasing wasn't putting her off either.

"Like this?" she asked and then put a bit spoonful in her mouth. It was cold and good, but mostly cold and it took a little bit to swallow it down. "Oh, head freeze," she grimaced, rubbing her forehead. "That wasn't the best idea in the world."

"I'll stop," she grinned. "I just rarely get the opportunity when you do something very un-Orla like. I'll try to keep the commemorating of history down to a dull roar."

Rose giggled, unfortunate that her mate was in pain but she was having the best time. "Let it sit until it all melts together. Then we'll go get coffee." She wondered how many more days they'd have like this now that she was married.

"How about an overzealous meow or - or even a peaceful purr?" she suggested, her cheeks redder than they had been in a long time and the sun hadn't even helped! "Though in all seriousness, I really don't think it's a date. Not a real one, anyway. Neither of us really know each other and wouldn't he have called it a quote-unquote date if he intended it to be one?" She really had no experience where boys were concerned and if this happened to go somewhere, on the really big off chance, she intended to make Rose help her.

"Oh, it's melting, especially today," she said, her eyes closed for a moment until the brain freeze passed. "That was all your fault," she muttered, hardly meaning it. "And I think it's a bit too hot for coffee today."

She took one of the cherries out of her dish and ate it, depositing the stem on a napkin. "So, now that you've properly embarrassed me as much as you can today, it's your turn. I want to hear all about your new husband and the honeymoon, and anything else you want to tell me!"

"Don't ask me what wizards do or what their intentions are. I have no insight for that. Being married does not give you all the answers." Before her sudden marriage to Michael, she'd been no more experienced in these matters than Orla was.

Rose laughed behind her hand. "Yes, and I accept blame. I'm sorry." Though it was hard to tell if she honestly was. "You want all the details?" Shrugging her shoulder, she smiled warmly. "I'm falling in love with him. And to be honest, we didn't do much on our honeymoon." A knowing smile covered her lips as she stared at Orla. "At least not outside of the room."

"Well that's maddeningly unhelpful," she teased, scrunching her nose up and then laughing slightly. "There needs to be a manual when it comes to them."

Orla knew Rose wasn't sorry, but let it go. For now anyway. Her head freeze was gone and she was curious to hear about Rose and Michael, but the small bit of information Rose provided for her left Orla slightly shocked. Her mouth hung open and her eyes widened almost comically. She realised she was all but gaping at Rose and laughed. "I didn't need to know those particular details!" she said, blushing slightly. "Surely you went outside some? You can't have stayed in bed all day."

"Maybe that's something we can write when we're old and gray. A book about men to help the young witches." Rose looked hopeful but doubted they would know any more after a lifetime of trying to understand the male of the species.

The way Orla looked so shocked made Rose giggle. "Yes, we went out. I'm teasing you. It was lovely. He's really a romantic at heart. To say I was surprised would be a huge understatement." She ducked her head, feeling a bit guilty for the other witches that weren't so fortunate. "I got lucky."

"Haven't people already tried to write those same kind of books anyway?" she mused. "I've seen similar things in the Self-Help section at Flourish & Blotts and several other bookstores I've been to." She shrugged her shoulders and her thoughts mirrored Rose's; there wasn't any way possible that they could learn about that particular sex within their lifetime. Maybe two or three, but definitely not one.

"Aww," she said, feeling excited for her friend. Part of her wanted to feel and experience what Rose was, but she didn't want to get married yet and the likelihood that she would be assigned with someone like Michael was pretty slim. "You really did and I couldn't be anymore happier for you! For both of you."

"True, we'll have to make a book of your photographs then. All about the charm of Dover?" Her eyes twinkled and she had too many ideas for her own good.

"Thank you." Ducking her head, she worried for Orla and reached over giving her mate's hand a squeeze. "I hope you have this. I know the right guy is out there for you. And the fact that I got Michael proves the Ministry is not full of complete idiots."

Orla laughed. "A guide book," she quipped, amused. "Maybe then people will realise there's a lot more to it!"

"Just half of them, yeah?" she said, giving a modicum of a smile. It was touching that Rose cared who she got paired with, but she had done the same before the witch across from her was paired off; it was what friends did, after all.

"Well, maybe more than half..." She grinned and finished off her sundae and letting the spoon clink loudly in the empty glass. The crowd was thinning as evening wore on.

"Want to do some window shopping before the stores close?" Rose gave Orla a mischievous smile. "We'll stay on the other end from the bridal shop. I promise."

Looking at Rose's glass, Orla took several bites of her ice cream to catch up before letting her spoon clink against the side of the bowl softly. Leaning back in her chair, she crinkled her nose at Rose. "Only if I must," she said with a dramatic sigh, teasing slightly, even if she didn't really like shopping all that much. "And only if we don't go for too long."
