Who: Hannah Abbott and Owen Cauldwell
When: Tuesday, July 1, 2002
Where: Owen’s place.
What: Hannah attempts to apologize with food.
Rating: PG
Status: Closed // In Progress

Hannah had always thought that marriage would be less awkward and a bit more exciting. She was beginning to realize though that she needed to simply forget all her prior expectations because they were just continuing to disappoint her. Her attitude was only a step above that of a small child that had its favourite toy taken away, and she feared that she was taking it out on poor Owen who clearly did not deserve it. It wasn’t his fault that the Ministry was forcing them into marriage, and it was only fair that Hannah at least try and be civil. Which was why she had brought a peace offering. Just a plate of sandwiches and some of her homemade chocolate chip biscuits, but the blonde figured that it was the effort that mattered.

Finally, after staring at Owen’s door as she attempted to gather the nerve to announce her presence, Hannah nervously bit her lip, shifted the container in her hand, and knocked on his door. Hopefully, he was home. Hannah worried she might not be able to gather the courage to come over here again.

It was actually somewhat of a miracle that Owen was home. It was odd for him to have a day off, especially lately, since he tended to be pulling doubles to cover for his coworkers who were also struggling through the ministry orders. He'd just put Ellie down for a nap, and the sound of someone knocking on the door--no matter how quiet--was certainly enough to wake her up.

Owen stood, torn between going to answer the door and getting Ellie, before deciding on the latter. The only people who would stop by his place were his friends, and they would understand that Ellie always came first. Hell, even depending on who it was, they might even let themselves in and help with Ellie.

But when he came back into the main room--with Ellie in tow--no one was there. With a confused look, Owen opened the door and couldn't stop a shocked look from spreading across his face. It was Hannah, his wife. He certainly hadn't been expecting to see her again until the ministry positively insisted on it. And it looked as though she was holding food.

For him?

Owen shook his head slightly, dislodging himself from his thoughts as he stuttered, "p-please, come in. Don't mind Ellie, I'm about to put her down..." As he'd expected Ellie started screaming and crying, and he offered Hannah a weak smile as he started to rock his daughter in his arms as he stepped away from the door. Within a few seconds, her crying had stopped, and she was curiously looking at Hannah, who Owen realized with a shock vaguely resembled her mother...

Hannah was just about to give up and go home when the door finally opened to reveal Owen and Ellie. It had completely slipped her mind he had daughter, and now she felt like an intruder. It was obviously a bad time for her to simply be popping in. “I’m sorry,” said Hannah, hesitating in the doorway. “I didn’t realize . . . I just wanted to . . . well, I brought food. For you.” Hannah scratched the back of her neck, realizing that she was probably not making any sense. “I’m sorry,” she repeated again, her shoulders sagging as she felt her face turn a bright red.

She watched for a moment as Owen rocked Ellie, and then gave her a small smile when Ellie seemed to turn her attention toward Hannah. The blonde then pointed to the plate. “I’ll just put this in the kitchen for you, and then I’ll get out of your hair.”

"This is great," Owen said with a bright smile as he looked down at the food. It looked wonderful, certainly better than anything he'd had lately. Good quality baby food was expensive, and between that and different broom supplies, Owen didn't have a lot of money leftover for food for himself. Hence, he tended to live off the barest minimum he could manage.

"Please, come in," Owen said, gesturing towards the living room before heading in there. He had a crib set up for Ellie in the living room, and placed her in it, only to have her start whining and holding her arms up at him. With a small shake of his head and a laugh, Owen picked her up and sat down on the couch, looking over his shoulder with his smile still intact to see if Hannah had followed.

“It’s just a few sandwiches and some biscuits,” said Hannah with a shrug. “There’s a bit of variety in there. I wasn’t sure what you liked.” Ever since she had started working in the restaurant, her interest in cooking had returned and with that Hannah seemed to have a fully stocked fridge wanting to be prepared whenever she got the urge (and time) to whip something up. It was perhaps one of her few guilty pleasures, and she was often sending leftovers from her surviving experiments to friends and families.

Hannah felt herself relax slightly. Maybe Owen wasn’t as upset as she thought he would be. “Thanks,” she said, as she followed him into the living room. She sat down on the other end of the couch and began to play with a loose thread in her shirt. “I’m sorry to just drop in on you,” Hannah started, finally moving her attention to his face. “I just wanted to apologize for the other day. I wasn’t exactly enthusiastic about,” she paused for a moment, realizing he might not have told Ellie about the ‘m’ word. “Well, you know, and I think I might have been a bit short with you when you obviously didn’t deserve it. So yes, sorry.”

Owen reached around Ellie and started to eat one of the cookies, figuring that it would be easier than trying to tackle the sandwich when Ellie was still squirming around. But she seemed oddly fascinated with the appearance of Hannah, and was sitting surprisingly still, so he moved on to one of the sandwiches when he finished the first cookie. As he'd expected, it was great, and it wasn't long before Owen had moved onto the next kind. It was actually sort of fun, seeing the different types.

But Owen suddenly realized that he was being rather rude, and swallowed hard before giving Hannah an abashed grin. "These are wonderful," he complimented genuinely, "do you want something to drink? Beer, water? Something else...?"

Hannah had always been slightly fascinated with the male’s ability to eat as much as they did in one sitting. Her younger brother was the same way, worse even, and her mother had often had to remind Jacob that the food wasn’t going to up and disappear if he stopped to take a breath in between bites. The blonde was rather pleased that Owen seemed to be enjoying the food though.

Hannah returned his smile. “I’m glad you like them,” she stated, while she ran a hand through her hair. Ellie seemed rather preoccupied with her, and Hannah couldn’t help but wonder if it was simply a child’s curiosity at meeting someone new or if her hair had somehow been messed up when she had apparated over. “Oh. Water would be lovely. Thanks.”

Owen deposited Ellie on one of the seats of the couch, figuring he'd be back before she could get herself into trouble. He got Hannah a class of water, heated up a bottle for Ellie, and grabbed a butterbeer for himself. He balanced the three awkwardly as he walked back into the living room, distributing them out to the appropriate parties.

"Do you cook professionally?" Owen asked as he positioned Ellie in his arms so she could start drinking the bottle and fall asleep. "The food was so good, you must..."

“Hm? Oh no. I want to though,” responded Hannah, taking the offered glass. “I do work in a restaurant, so I see plenty. And I’ve taken a few classes. I just don’t have the experience to go out on my own just yet.” That, and the courage. It was one thing to cook for herself, but the idea of fixing actual meals for complete strangers seemed a little daunting to her. What if she messed up and did something like accidently poison an entire group of people. That wouldn’t be good at all.

Hannah leaned back slightly, and took a sip of water. “What is it that you do?” she asked curiously.

"You seem to really have what it takes," Owen said with a confident smile as he polished off the last sandwich. It felt so good to have filling, tasty food for a change.

"Currently I work at Quality Quidditch Supplies," Owen said with a small shrug, "one day I want to have my own line of brooms. I've been working on them for years. Ever since I could, really."

Owen always felt slightly uncomfortable talking about his dream, especially to someone that he wasn't even sure cared that much. To give himself something to pay attention to, Owen patted Ellie's back as she drank the bottle.

Hannah gave him an appreciative smile. “Thank you,” she said as she felt her cheeks begin to redden at the compliment.

The blonde nodded slightly as Owen explained. “Oh wow,” she said enthusiastically. Hannah herself knew next to nothing about brooms and was only an average flier, but she knew enough to know that it took a lot of work to get a broom up in the air properly. “That certainly sounds interesting. Have you picked out for the line a name yet?”

Owen cocked his head to one side as he heard her question, and couldn't help but laugh. "You know, I've gone through so many names, but none have stuck," Owen said with a small shrug. It would certainly be something nice to have out of the way, however.

"Got any ideas?" he asked as he bounced Ellie in his arms slightly, watching as she got more and more sleepy. She was going to be ready to go down soon, but since Hannah wasn't that loud, he might just put her in the crib in the room with them.

Hannah shrugged. The names that ran through her head were simply titles that she was sure were already taken, and she simply knew from in passing. The Comet 360 or something, for example. And then there was ‘the Firebolt’ which she was sure she would be unable to top. Even she, who knew very little about Quidditch and flying, had heard how fantastic the line of Firebolts were. “Not sure. Maybe you could name it after yourself or something,” she suggested. “What were the names that you came up with?”

"Definitely not after me," Owen said, shaking his head. "Maybe after Ellie..."

"I've come up with hundreds of names," Owen said with a laugh, "there's no point in listing them. And all of them are just as bad as the others..."

"Got any ideas for names of your future restaurant? Or what type of food you want to do?"

Hannah giggled and tilted her head in amusement. “So that’s a no to ‘the Cauldwell’ then?” she asked before becoming a bit more serious and giving Owen an encouraging smile. “I’m sure you’ll think of something. Sometimes these types of things just come to you when you least expect them to. Maybe you just need to see the finished product first.”

Hannah shook her head rather dramatically when the subject turned to her. “Oh no. I haven’t thought too much about it honestly. It’s much too early for that,” she stated. She thought she would be lucky to even get a job in an already running restaurant, let alone one she actually owned herself.

"A very strong one," Owen nodded with a grin. He could never imagine naming a broom after him, it was going to be strange for him to even have his name attached to it as the creator. But luckily most people didn't even know who designed the brooms anyway.

"No wishes or hopes?" Owen asked, just out of curiosity, not trying to criticize her in any way.

Hannah shrugged. “I suppose. I mean it would certainly be nice if I could have my own restaurant some day,” stated the blonde as she began to twirl some of her hair around her finger nervously. It was such a big project to take on though, that as much as it was something she would like to do, Hannah could never quite picture herself ever actually accomplishing it. “Just not for a while yet, you know.”

Owen got up and gently placed Ellie in the crib before sitting back down and taking a long swig of his butterbeer. All in all, it was a perfect finish to an amazing meal. He wanted nothing more than to curl up and take a nap of his own.

"I'm sure you'll be amazing," Owen said with a warm and supportive grin. "What's the restaurant that you manage now?"

“Oh, well, thank you. That’s very kind of you,” said Hannah. Her voice was sincere but a small part of her couldn’t help but think that he was just saying that. They barely knew each other after all, and one could hardly base one’s culinary skills off a few sandwiches and biscuits now could they. “Bella’s Pocket. It’s a nice little place on one of the side streets off Diagon Alley.”

Hannah turned her attention to the crib Owen had just placed Ellie in. “Is she going to be okay?” whispered Hannah. “I don’t want to wake her or anything.”

"Perhaps I'll have to come by for dinner, or lunch sometime," Owen said with a small shrug before leaning back against the couch.

"Ellie's fine," Owen said in an appeasing tone as he glanced over at the crib. She was sleeping soundly, thanks to the bottle, and Owen was sure that Ellie wasn't going to be waking up anytime soon.
