I think Nuriko might be gone. As in, it's not that I can't find him, it's that he's not anywhere to be found.

I don't know what to do.

Cor, I know you must be busy with your new job, but you know how I came and kept you company in my dog-form the other week? Can we do that again, please?

Already on my way, baby bird. No dog-form, but you can pick boy or girl if you want.

I meant me as a dog. I don't really want to be a person just now. And for you, either's fine, you're you either way.

I'll meet you at your place.

Thank you, Cor.

I know, hon, it's fine. Whatever you want to be, you can.

See you in a few.

Anytime, Dar.

I've got a fresh batch of cookies with your name on it, if you want.

Really? I can't remember the last time I had cookies.

Can I come over?

Yes, I've visited Merrill there before, though not for a while.

Thanks, Melora.

This universe is... certainly cruel in its choices of what to take away from us. I know I'm but a stranger to you, Mademoiselle, but if I can help in any way, you only need ask.

That's kind. Thank you. I was going to come listen to your auditions today, since you don't mind.

You're looking for an angel, right? I do know some. Though I'm not sure any of the ones I know sing.

Music sometimes has the right sort of charm to soothe pain. You might even be able to help me choose out the best.

It could be worth asking them. Whilst my angel was nothing but human, she sang in a way that could only be sent from heaven.

I really don't think you could need my help for that. I don't know much--or anything, really--about music. Just that it's enchanting.

I'll ask. It couldn't hurt. I'm sorry you lost your angel. What happened?

All that matters is the love of the art when it comes to judging music. It's always helpful to have a second opinion on such things.

She left. There was a man she knew from childhood, insolent and brutish, and he captured her heart and tempted her away from me. She was enamoured of his beauty, whilst I... well, I'm hardly the most pleasant thing to look at.

Some knowledge might be helpful too, and I don't know much. But I'll be happy to listen, and to give you an opinion if you want one.

I'm sorry you were hurt. Though...your appearance might not have been the reason, or at least not the main reason. Feelings developed in childhood can be very, very powerful and hard to dismiss. At least, in my experience.

Thank you, Mademoiselle. I shall be glad of your company.

I'd been with her for almost a long a time as he, mostly staying in the shadows, but always there. Her guardian angel, she called me... and then she saw my face and started to detest me for it. There's a reason I wear this mask.

Forgive me, but...if it was only your face that drove her away from you, I can't think much of her judgement.

It was a different time. People were superstitious, saying that my... deformity was a punishment from God, or something marking me as the Devil's child. That, added to my somewhat unpleasant temper, may've been what drove her from me.

Ah. I was...similarly persecuted, where I come from. Though it wasn't as personal, and it didn't trouble me anything like as much as your experiences seem to have affected you. Still, I'm sorry for what you must have gone through as a result, especially if it cost you someone you cared for.

Here, at least, are you not judged so much on what you look like? This seems a very permissive place, to me.

Every world loves to persecute the unalike. It's a truly sad thing.

Sadly, Mademoiselle, I've not dared to remove my mask where others can see. I would rather not risk bringing the condemnation of the world down on my head.

It is.

Given your history, I can certainly see why you wouldn't want to test it. Though I'm sure you can't be more frightening-looking than darkspawn.

Maybe it would be worth trying, perhaps only to a few people at a time. I often forget just how many terrible things some of the residents of this world have seen...

Well, if you ever want to test, I don't mind. Like I said, can't be any worse than darkspawn. Possibly best to try it with those of us who've arrived from other places, though. Anyone who's come through the vortex has had to learn to be a bit more open-minded just because of the experience, I think.

Also, if it's any help to you, I'm, ah, a shapeshifter. That was considered pretty horrific where I come from, so I didn't exactly advertise the fact.

The vortex certainly has its uses, when it's not being cruel to us.

A shapeshifter? Now, that is new... and almost comforting, even if I'm not quite sure why.

There had to be a bright side somewhere!

Mm, there's more of us here than I would have expected, which is a pleasure to me. I only met one other in my whole life, back home. At any rate, it means you can believe me when I say that I know better than most how little a person's outward appearance has to do with who they really are. We're a lot more than what we look like. I'm myself whether I'm shaped like this or like a rat.

That's truly an enlightened way of looking at things. You may be the very first person to have convinced me that, maybe, removing my mask might not spell doom and condemnation for myself and for others around me.

If only someone like you could've existed, all that time ago. Maybe the terrors that came to pass wouldn't have happened.

I don't know about enlightened, it's just what I know from my own experiences. If more people had had those experiences, maybe more people would have that opinion. But I'm glad to have given you some hope. I certainly don't believe that a face can automatically cause doom and destruction to happen.

Terrors?

For the longest time, I lived beneath the opera house in Paris, emerging only to teach my angel. After she left me, things started to go terribly wrong, culminating in an angry lynch mob chasing me out of the only home I'd known for years.

If it hadn't been for the ballet mistress and her daughter, I would've likely been killed... either that or thrown back to the freak shows, the mysterious Phantom, caught and caged for all to see.
