Mr. Spencer? May I come over and visit your daughter? We'd like to discuss school, and our feelings about being out of place in this time period. However, I do want you to feel comfortable with who Riley spends time with, and this way you can supervise and intervene if you feel it's needed.

I don't know who you're speaking to and it's not my business, but I had to tell you, you've got your father's gift for language. Well played, young sir. Good luck.

I got all of my responsibility and diplomacy from him too! Don't worry, I got your sense of humour, and your affinity for shiny objects.

Sort of. Jack is my boyfriend's son with his first wife, but in some world, Jack grows up with me for a mum. My boyfriend's first wife passed away before he came here, and Jack was only five years old, but suddenly a fifteen-year old version of Jack appeared. I'm told that happens here.

Erm. My name is Isabela, incidentally.

Huh, that sounds familiar. Riley, the girl that he's got a crush on, she's my husband's daughter with an old girlfriend. She used to be eight, and now she's only three years younger than me. It happens here, but I don't think anyone's used to it.

My name is Candy, it's nice to meet you.

Likewise. I'm really not mum material, I used to be a pirate, but he seems to care for me. I'm awfully fond of him, and frankly, it was hard for me to sit by and watch your husband threaten him. I don't know what that says.

I'm sure my boyfriend thinks the same. But he's a wonderful father, so it's just a bit strange for me. I never knew my dad, and my mum sold me to a husband I had to have killed.

My father was an asshole who I think I might have accidentally helped kill. I'm not really used to being a mom yet either, and I've got three kids now. I love it, though. I love them.

Trust me, if he turns out this funny and smart, you do something right.

Three? Maker. I only have Jack, though it's technically two versions of the same boy. And so much of this is his father. Aaron's one of the few good men I've ever met.

Eliot is too, even if he comes off as not. Still, it's pretty obvious you're his mom already.

Your husband comes off as very protective, for better or worse, but if you tell me there's no real danger of Jack getting hurt in any way, I'll believe you.

If he lifts a malicious finger toward Jack, he'll be in for a nasty surprise. I cast a feathersteel spell on him yesterday, and I have no plans to lift it.

I don't know what that is, but I can guess that it would be annoying at the least. I'm not saying anything about your husband, just, like you said. My instinct is to protect Jack.

Incidentally, my boyfriend is an MI5 agent and a bloody good interrogator, but I think he'd go easy on your daughter, should it come to that.

Jack's covered in magical steel that weighs about as much as a feather. It's invisible too. And of course it is, just like Eliot's is to protect Riley. ... too much, but still.

Well, we appreciate it. I think she's confused by this as much as we are.

If I didn't know better, Jack, I'd think you were trying to play me like some kind of fiddle. But you wouldn't do that, would you?

You are invited for dinner tomorrow evening. I'll be cooking it myself. If you'd like to come early, and help out in the stalls, be here at noon. Otherwise, 4:00. Dinner will be served at 6.

No, sir, I'm not. I simply want to get to know your daughter better, and want to do it in a way you're comfortable with. You're also interesting. Also, frankly, I think you could kill me by flicking me in the forehead. I'm built like a gazelle, and you're a Sherman tank.

Thank you, sir. I'll be over at noon to help in the stalls. That grey mare you have is darling.

I know at least fifteen ways to kill you a man without leaving any traceable mark. I'm not interested in killing you.

Noon. Not a minute later.

Well, that's a relief. I don't have my living will in order yet - fifteen seemed a bit young.

I'll make sure to arrive early, just in case.
