There's a wonderful accessory that's been invented since the last time I was walking the streets, or the last time I was anywhere, really, and it's a wonder I haven't realized it earlier, but being crepuscular-to-nocturnal would hinder this sort of discovery I suppose.

In any case: Sunglasses. I quite wish I could meet their inventor so I could shake his hand, it's ever so much more enjoyable to go outside during the day now.

Are there any other fairly recent inventions and/or accessories a young woman should know about?

Laces are terrible unless you've someone to help with them, and corsets are quite comfortable, provided you've got one that fits properly, otherwise they're just, well, as you said, torture.

Yes. Either way, ill-fitting undergarments are the bane of our existence still.

Some things, it seems, never change.

Quite true.

I'm Johanna by the way, at least for now. Until I find a more fitting name.

And I am Ganieda. I am pleased to meet you.

Does your name displease you?

Oh it's a fine name, for who I was.

I've been given an abundance of second chances here, and it seems only fitting that I should take a new name for a new life.

That seems like a good way to look at it. I feel much the same, though my name still fits me.

Well then you've no reason to change yours, my Christian name was given to me by a long dead mother, and my surname belongs to a likewise dead father.

I suppose I could keep both for a time to do them the honor, but it doesn't seem that honor will do either of them much good.

No, it seems not.

Both of my parents are gone as well. Though I never knew either. Though my brother is here, and that is a great comfort.

Do you like being here? I am finding modern life a challenge.

I never knew mine either, or at least not that I remember.

I am rather enjoying the modern world however, it's quite different from when I was before, far more free.

Yes, it is much freer, definitely!

It is rather interesting to go out by oneself. I do not even need a chaperone. Indeed, I rarely have one.

It is also nice to choose whom I may speak with and be with.

Exactly so! And to be allowed to walk at all hours without anyone thinking twice about it, I'm quite fond of that, I like the evenings best, and now that I've sunglasses, I believe I will like the dawns just as much.

I love being out any time of the day or night, and at night especially with my friend.

The city lights are so pretty.

Oh they certainly are.

What city is it that you now call home?

New York City, in America. I am from Avalon, originally, around the year 429.

It is much, much different.

I'm in New York as well! I was born in London though, and lived there most of my life, well, all of it until I showed up here, actually, and I'm not from quite that far back, I can imagine that's quite a change for you.

It was much worse when I first came here, but now I am used to most things in the apartment and I can cook now. Though I still do not particularly care for trousers at all.

Nor I, I don't understand why so many young women would rather look like young men, it makes no sense to me.

Not to me, either.

Perhaps we shall meet each other in the city. It is always nice to meet a fellow accidental traveler.

Well if you're ever in the neighborhood of [address] perhaps we can go for a walk together sometime.

I think that would be lovely.

I will be sure to call upon you.
