Carly half-smiled. “You’ve already done that.” Her sweet tooth was much larger than it used to be.
“Between your sweets and my supposed charm, it seems almost unfair of us to gang up on the poor landlady like we are.” She was more amused by the thought than anything. No one ever saw the pair of them as intimidating. Cassidy was sometimes the exception to that, being a Stone, but it was never a word people instantly clicked with them.
A giggle escaped her and she tipped her head to lean it against Cassidy’s for a brief moment. “And leave me to freeze without any warmth? I’m not sure I see the fairness in that. Ask me again when there is twelve feet of snow covering the ground and I might reconsider letting you steal every ounce of warmth from my body. I might be more willing to sacrifice myself then.”
The bump and the reminder jolted her focus, giving her something else to aim for. More than meeting with a new employer or a new landlady, tardiness made Carly nervous. She hated showing up late for appointments.
Carly’s expression brightened when she saw the elevator. Their current apartment building only had stairs. It wasn’t clear how often they would have to fight for use of the elevator, but it was empty now and that was where they headed. Seven floors would be a pain to have to climb every day. She stepped in and pushed the corresponding button, watching out of the corner of her eye and trying not to laugh at her girlfriend’s visible excitement, nodding here and there to a comment about a shop or something they’d seen in a display window.
“That would tell us if she’s there or not,” she agreed. Her eyes followed the letters on the doors as they walked down the hall. She slowed when they reached the door with the letter D on it, glancing at Cassidy before raising her hand to knock.
