WHO: Carly and Logan
WHERE: Joey Basso's arena
WHEN: [Flashback] August 8, 2014; mid-afternoon
WHAT: Logan and Carly try to find a way out of Joey's hunting arena.
CHALLENGE(S): #1, a scene I/we wanted to write but didn't get a chance to.
Six hours had gone by since they were let out of the cage. Carly’s legs were cramping, angry at being forced to exert so much effort after being cooped up in a tiny area for so long. She was beginning to think the fence Basso invited them to find was all a lie. He wanted them to run, wanted them to exhaust themselves, to hope for an escape that wouldn’t come - before he inevitably swooped in to kill them. She loped through the foliage ahead of Logan, her longer legs granting her more speed despite the weariness settling into her body. They needed water, but more than anything, Carly needed to stop. Her lungs burned to the point that pulling in each breath was torture. Coming to an abrupt stop, she slumped heavily against a tree and slid down to her knees. “I,” she spoke between shallow breaths, “can’t run… anymore. If he’s… going to kill… us… Let him…. It’s got to be better… than running to death.” There were no zombies in the hunting grounds, but she hadn’t seen any animals either. Except for a few birds. As far as the eye could see, only trees and nature. “I don’t think there is a bloody way out of here.” |
