WHO: Nate and Lydia
WHERE: Security building.
WHEN: February 14th, 2015
WHAT: Nate finally has to admit he can’t avoid Lydia forever.
Weeks had passed since the boat incident. Weeks that felt like months. Seemed to just drag on as if the passage of time had been slowed down. Most people had gone back to living their normal lives, acknowledging that the fiasco happened - but moving on from it. Nate couldn’t move on, or wasn’t allowing himself to move on from the anger, the guilt, the shame he felt over nearly dying, nearly leaving Louisa without any family. These feelings, the fact that he couldn’t overcome how he was feeling, well, it was the main reason he had for the last couple weeks been avoiding Lydia. He didn’t think his friend would lecture him on what he had done, but he couldn’t be sure - so he avoided her. That approached had seemed like the safest bet. It was a shitty thing to do, he knew that. Normal people, healthy people, they don’t avoid their friends after a traumatic experience. Nate wasn’t normal or healthy though, he was broken, had been broken before even setting foot on that boat - the incident only helped to push the broken pieces further apart. Because of this he couldn’t bring himself to face Lydia, not with how he had been coping with all of this. Sure, he hadn’t had a drink - yet - but how long would that last, and he had set foot on the boat not even a month after having a conversation with her about how he was going to be a better father for Louisa. Was getting on a boat being a better father? No. All this circled around in Nate’s mind as he made his way towards the security building. The last known place that Lydia had been that day. Because as much as every fiber in his body wasn’t prepared to face her and what she might have to say to him, he knew sooner or later he needed to. Avoiding her was only damaging their friendship. So after making sure Louisa wasn’t going to go off and do anything stupid, Nate had left the hotel and made the walk to the security building - a walk that seemed longer today simply because of the dread that was building up inside of him. “Stop being a wuss,” Nate muttered to himself as the building came into view. Wasn’t like Lydia was going to crucify him for what he had done. It wasn’t like they hadn’t spoken in the weeks that had passed, but Nate had made a point of having people around as buffers, because he didn’t one hundred percent know what Lydia might say or do. Again he shoved any negative thoughts to the back of his mind, or at least tried. Going into this conversation assuming how it was going to turn out would only do one thing - result in the conversation going poorly. As he reached the security building, he muttered. “Man up,” before pulling the door open and stepping inside. It took a couple moments for his eyes to adjust, but once they had Nate found himself shoving his hands into his pockets and scanning the room, his gaze finally settling on the blonde already seated in front of the wall of monitors. Nate cleared his throat before offering up a greeting. “Hey,” he paused a beat. “Mind if I join you?” Just because he was ready to have this conversation with her didn’t mean he was going to start it off right out of the gate. |
