Non-crazy welcoming committe on duty
Who: Juliet & Daryl
Where: Crossroads --> ?
When: Week 0 Day 6
What: Daryl's arrival
Status: WIP

Juliet tucked her phone back in her pocket after sending a message to Jake, Faith, Micha, and Connor that she was heading up to Crossroads to greet a new arrival. It was when she was sending the message she realised she didn't even know the new arrival's name.

"Ah, well, can't be too many guys up there!" she told herself, checking her gear and setting off up the road to the ridge that formed the eastern edge of the caldera where Crossroads lay. Again the steep rise as the road changed to rutted dirt had her slow and turn to take in the view, a particular spot she'd found perfect to see along the coast south, and across to the harbour, over the top of the village which was hidden behind the jungle of trees between where she was and where the huts and other buildings lay. After a few minutes she turned and finished the steep climb, then started down into the caldera and across the wide flat bottom to the buildings that formed Crossroads. Glancing at her watch she saw she'd done it in just under an hour and she hadn't pushed really hard. "Not bad, getting better. Nearly thirty miles!"

As she approached the round building she slowed to a walk and looked around, then called out.

"Hello? Anyone here?" She opened the door of the ring building and looked inside. "It's Juliet, your friendly non-crazy welcoming committee!"

"You want to know what I was doing? I was fighting off a hoard of zombies. The governor broke down the fence with his tank, and made the prison a damn buffet for them walkers. Me and Beth was trying to get somewhere safe and I don't know what happened to the rest of them." Daryl shook his head. He didn't want to recall the massacre at the prison, or the fact that those who survived it were scattered. He didn't even know if Rick made it out, or Carl or Glenn and Maggie, or Michonne.

"So if I'm dead, and this is some kind of hell, or maybe it's Purgatory? You can tell me. I can handle it." His head shake turned to a nod. "Cause if it's not, I don't know what 'M doing here, and no offense but I need to get back to the people who're counting on me back home."

She let the door close behind him after he followed her outside, and waved her hand to take in the bunkhouse across the road, the open empty expanse of the caldera and the part of the lake they could see on the other side of the round building.

"You tell me. Does this look like hell? Or Purgatory?" she asked him, walking along the road a bit and waiting for him to follow. From there the white sands and the crystal blue of the shallows of this side of the lake were visible. "Because if it is? It ain't so bad."

"I don't know. I don't know nothing else that makes sense, anyhow." Daryl pushed a hand through his hair. The scenery was breathtaking, that was for sure. He'd seen some picturesque scenes from time to time, but the beauty was marred by the presence of walkers.

"There ain't no zombies here?" he asked, because that was what he knew. That's how he'd been living the last several years. "Because if there are, even if there ain't none, I need my crossbow. I feel naked without it."

"Zombies? No, not that I've come across," she told him, head tilted to one side as she thought. "I'm gonna guess there were zombies where you came from? Because although I've killed a few in my time, back where I came from, they weren't the worst thing I've had to take down. And as for your crossbow, I have a few weapons, back down at the beach, and what I carry, but yours should show up here," she told him, "usually the first morning you wake up." She shrugged lightly. "At least that's what's happened for us so far. Even Jake and Neytiri have their ikrans."

"Good." Daryl nodded. No zombies was a good thing. No Rick or the others was not a good thing. He really didn't know what to make of it all.

"All right. I reckon I should find somewhere to lay my head." Because he was tired. And to sleep in a real bed would be a major luxury, one he hadn't known for a very long time.

She jerked her head back toward the round building, where the ring room was, and started to head back there. "Then you have to make a choice. You can go to the beach where there's a village, and most people are already, or you can go to the town, where there's a couple of people, or you can go down south to the farming area, where we haven't been yet, but will be going to explore real soon. Which would you prefer?"

"I reckon the beach. But I ain't going through that damn ring thing." He shook his head. He had no interest in that, whatever it was. It was too sci fi for him. He had no interest in trusting his life to that. He hadn't survived the zombies to come here and get friend in some weird magic ring, no thank you.

She stopped and turned to look at him. "Even if I go through with you?" she said, silently sighing inside. "We can be there in just a few steps, otherwise it's going to take a good few hours."

"No. I don't like it. Don't trust it neither." Daryl shook his head. "Don't want nothing to do with it. I ain't no stranger to walking. Where I'm from, we don't got many cars left. We got cars, we ain't got the gas to run 'em 'cept in emergencies." And to be honest, he was more confortable walking. Cars made him feel trapped, because if he got surrounded by a hoard, there wasn't much hope of escape.

"Okay, so walking it is," Juliet sighed, bypassing the door into the round building and standing in the middle of the road. "If that's the case, just let me grab some water. Been a long day, and it's about to get longer," she said, and headed off to the bunkhouse.
