Augustus would normally have taken a carriage across the city. But he had to walk today. Perhaps it was not the wisest of choices, but Georgina and her family did not live all that far away. A pleasant walk through a park, a few minutes down an attractive street, passed a church and it's attached school. It was enjoyable, but he saw very little of it. Instead, he walked the route a man distracted, knowing his way but unseeing, until he reached his goal, the Rochester's home. Georgina and Miles were not to be in, if everything had gone well. He paused on the threshold, wondering if he was too late, too early, or if he was doing the right thing.

He was, of course. He knew that. This would prevent further strain on Fabian, he would secure the family's survival. It would be right for Georgina and her family. There was no reason not to do what he was about to do.

And that was why he reached out and knocked on the door.

Katherine stood beside the small water basin in her room, pouring water from a pitcher over her inkstained hands for what seemed like the hundredth time. Instead of making her skin its normal creamy white, however, the blue-black of the ink was only turning a dusky shade of purple. "Damn it!" The water she was pouring rather frantically onto her hands had chosen an inopportune time to spill, making a long soaked trail down the front of her dress. Hastily trying to get the wet garment off, Katherine shouted, "Marie! Marie, could you come help me?" for the maid, who immediately rushed in.

As the two women worked off Katherine's dress, they heard a knock on the door downstairs. "Damn, damn, damn!" Katherine exclaimed rather miserably, practically starting to cry. She had not been herself in recent weeks, and even the smallest things like wet dresses were setting her off. Marie, seeing her mistress' recent temper starting to rear its ugly head, took Katherine's shoulder, offered her a smile, and went off to get the door, pulling a dress from the wardrobe on her way and handing it to Katherine. "Thank you," Katherine replied miserably, slipping the simple dress onto her body.

"Miss Katherine!" Marie called from downstairs, and Katherine, knowing it must be a guest, hurried from the room, hastily trying to adjust her dress so it hung properly. She forgot to grab gloves, her inkstained hands bare for the world to see, but figured she could come up with a suitable excuse for them as she descended the stairs.

With the nod of his head and a murmured thank you to the maid, he stepped into the house, and glanced about. He had been here before, when Georgina's children were otherwise distracted, and several times for dinner. But now, of course, Georgina was not her, and although she had invited him, he could not reveal that. Instead he must appear to have come of his own resolve, and in the back of his mind, he could not help but feel rude.

He stepped forward a little more, and glanced up at the staircase, where the subject of his affections would descend from. "Miss Rochester." He said, smiling slightly, "Have I disturbed you?"
